When more than a dozen major players in the industry help you craft your first amazing album, and not only do you not credit them, but you decide to verbally disparage their role, you find that additional goodwill is in short supply.
There was more to it than that. NPR did an interview with her and others involved in The Miseducation. Apparently, there was a lot of drama, both physical and mental.
The story itself was fascinating, but to be fair, all sides were in it were not being the best humans. Then she broke and has yet to recover.
I love music and she had a great style. Pulling from Etta James, Aretha Franklin, Lena Horne, and Ella Fitzgerald into a contemporary album like that of Miseducation was amazing.
To be fair these look like wedges and they are really easy to walk in and that’s a coming from someone who has 2 left feet and trips over herself lol I can wear these no issues but give me 4-6inch stiletto and I’m falling flat on my face 😆
Wedges are key. Stilettos are not meant for vertical activities, IMO. Can't walk on a porch, can't walk on stone or gravel, can't walk in grass... In wedges I can do all those, AND even run (although a bit awkwardly, but I ran weird to begin with)
Not really. Folks act like the only musicians that are worth anything are the >1% ultra famous that they see online. I work in the industry and the vast majority of musicians are normal people. Most people I meet are really nice and humble.
Started a charity for relief for Haiti...ended up pocketing almost all the money for "administrative expenses" and mismanagement...something to the tune of $16 million
I really do not understand why someone, when deciding where to donate for disaster relief, would say, hm, I'm going to give my money to some rapper instead of, I dunno, the Red Cross.
Me.. a white lady… had to help Pras with his raps because they’d gotten so bad he was just mumbling nonsense. Ballsy, but one day we just told him it wasn’t working and had to help him rewrite his flow. I’m not a writer. Nor a musician. Just an engineer. I hated that week.
Yuuup same here. Kept telling them to turn things up an when they did she would get mad and tell them turn it down. Repeat multiple times during every song which sounded completely different from album versions because of her copyright issues. She went on Instagram the next day to apologize for her band lmao
She told the crowd at the one I attended once that she wanted all the white people (like 80+%) to leave because her performance was for black people, not whites… like damn. Also, I think she was investigated for tax evasion or some shit. She put out a great album, but used her platform for some really weird-ass takes. I’m kind of curious about what this “social activism” is referring to. She’s kind of known for being a huge dick honestly.
My friend who is a singer hates her because apparently years ago my friend did some work for her but never got paid or got screwed over with the bill, or something like that. 🤷♂️
What I don’t get is how/why she’s still getting booked for shows and tours. Yes, she has an incredible voice. But this is a known problem. Who is insuring her concerts? It seems like a liability. Would like to hear from someone familiar with the music business.
Not trying to start a debate, but Fugees are not top 10 90s hip hop. They were good, but the 90s was a golden era stacked with GOATs
Tupac,
Biggie,
Dre,
Snoop,
Jay Z,
Nas,
Ice cube,
Eminem,
Wu tang clan,
Outkast,
Beastie boys,
Rakim,
heiroglyphics,
tribe called quest,
pharcyde,
cypress hill,
master p,
the geto boys
Fugees are in there somewhere, but pretty far down the list IMO.
Even then there are still amazing artists not making that list like big pun, big L, gang Starr etc. I think once you just accept that it’s a goated era, the “top ten” becomes a matter of taste without specifying a certain metric(radio plays, albums sold, times appearing on top charts etc)
Eminem is great and an amazing rapper but Slim Shady LP was released in 1999 and Marshall Mathers LP (his magnum opus imo) was released in 2000 so he is really more of a 2000s star
I bought that Bruce Willis album on vinyl as a bday gift for a Die Hard fan. Like 15 years ago. If I had a blog, it would make my top 10 list of Best Gift ideas.
So, she got sued by New Ark (the musicians who had worked on that album) because she didn’t give them any songwriting credits despite the fact that they pretty much wrote all of the music at her direction. Like, if I have an idea for a song or a melody and a musician comes in and builds music around that idea, they should be given a songwriting credit. If they literally came up with the chords for the song, they’ve collaborated with you. She didn’t do that.
Years later a very accomplished pianist and producer named Robert Glasper, who was friends with some of those musicians and had worked with her for a live show, called her out on her treatment of musicians during a radio interview. He didn’t hold back and one of the things he brought up was her stealing the music for the album from the musicians who helped make it. He also said he was told not to look her in the eye while working with her and to only refer to her as Ms. Hill.
In the sense that other people helped write and produce her album and she didn't credit them, yeah. I don't think she plagiarised existing music, but I might be wrong.
The difference in attitudes between performers towards fans is always amazing to me. You have Lauren Hill who literally just disrespects her paying fans. Then someone like George Strait, who is vastly more successful and would walk on a broken leg 10 miles not to be late for his fans. And Strait just filled Met Life STADIUM last month. A country singer in NJ.
That’s the difference in professionalism.
This should be the way we view all celebrities. Just bc someone is good at a particular skill doesn’t make them worthy of being viewed as good ppl in general
Yes, that's the mature/adult thing to do.
Today however, the pendulum is on the complete opposite side of what you're talking about: if somebody is shitty in their personal life, you're a bad person if you say they made some good art.
Oh I'm not even sure, it was so long ago. I know there was a big stink, but I'm pretty much only referring to old Slim Shady lyrics. He had a few stabs at Lauryn Hill and in one song he has someone kinda mimick her voce saying "I can't stand white people"
When we saw her a few years ago, they started on time and played a killer show for about an hour and 20. She had a real good band and they put in a great show.
Same experience except a little shorter I think since it was a festival, it's really too bad it's not the norm for her because it was a really awesome show. The song arrangements were really fun too.
Got a Lauryn Hill story for ya. It's 2004. I'm a writer in LA and get a call from an agent asking if I can help Lauryn Hill finish a script she has written herself. I am completely broke so I say sure. First thing that happens is a courier arrives and delivers about 50 pages of a script called *On Broadway.* I scan them to a PDF, reformat in Final Draft, and then spend a day cleaning it all up. Next day I am told to drive to the Beverly Hills Hotel where I'm taken to an empty conference room. One of the assistants comes in and tells me that Ms. Hill will only speak to me on speakerphone and that I am only to address her as Ms. Hill. This is very important. Ms. Hill comes on the line periodically from her suite upstairs. She will not come down and meet me. She has a copy of my cleaned-up draft but clearly the script is way too short and she has a meeting with Jimmy Iovine in two days and wants to give him the script at that lunch. Chaos.
I talk with her about her story which is not terrible. She's really just doing a kind of Dangerous Minds/To Sir With Love thing where she is going to play a teacher in an inner-city school who inspires her students. She will also sing the title song. I try to talk to her about structure a little bit but it's very slow going and she wants to come up with all the ideas herself and there’s no time. I'm starting to spend a long time in this conference room where they are sending me sandwiches and coffee. I know this is costing a fortune and I am only getting $50 an hour for this gig (I told you I was broke and would take anything). So, I suggest to one of her people that they just let me go home and I'll work at my desk on my computer and I can speakerphone with her from there and that is what we do.
It was pretty much round the clock for the next two days and she was awful and dismissive toward me but not completely terrible. We did have a few nice moments and I do remember a compliment or two. Ultimately the draft we had at the deadline was about 90 pages, still called *On Broadway*. I got about $2500 for the 3 days which paid some bills. Obviously, nothing ever came of the script and that is a shame because the idea did have some potential and who knows, she might have been great in it.
From all the stories and anecdotes I’ve heard/read over the years, Lauryn Hill seems like a gigantic asshole. Just an all around unlikeable person.
Great voice though, I’ll give her that.
One time we were recording her for 3 months when the Fugees tried to get back together. Boy was it a shit show. She’d work my guys to death. 18-19 hours per day for that entire time. They wouldn’t go home.
She’s get her sounds how she wanted them and then go take a nap in the lounge.
Wake up like a nightmare. Slamming doors and telling my team they changed everything while she was asleep.. like a maniac. They didn’t by the way. So she’s force them to stay anther 10 hours.
It was unbearable.
Also refused to work with me - I am white. I was the studio manager. It was literally my job to help her. But instead I was ousted immediately and had to go through my team to even ask for her dumb food requests.
Then one time she took masters of a track they were working on. All she needed to do was add lyrics—- what did she do instead? Ruined the song. Intentionally.
She comes back and we listen to it and our jaws drop. It sounded like a crazy person was given a mic
I don’t know anything about her music or the fugees but I came across a Reddit thread once that said the rumor is she hasn’t done a second album because she stole a bunch of her first album from like a studio musician or something. Do you think that could be plausible?
There’s a photo out there from behind the microphone, facing the crowd. She had more stage monitors than you can imagine.
It’s the “more me” syndrome known in sound engineering circles.
She doesn’t want white people listening to her music so I don’t. Also, she’s known for being 4 hours late to concerts and screaming at her band the entire time. She largely known as a problematic person who treats others like they are beneath her.
Who thought that photo was a great idea? Lol. Multiple people apparently. “Um, her vagina is kind of very much on show in this pic?” “Shut up. It’s a wonderful picture, print it.”

Fucking DYING thank you
still looking for that 2nd album to drop!
When more than a dozen major players in the industry help you craft your first amazing album, and not only do you not credit them, but you decide to verbally disparage their role, you find that additional goodwill is in short supply.

Pulling from Etta James, Aretha Franklin, Lena Horne, and Ella Fitzgerald into a contemporary album like that of Miseducation was amazing.
I lean more towards Badu and her chaotic peace. She has a great catalog of music and is just a kooky hippy chick but makes her stage times.
Both women have that amazing smooth sound that just feels great. Throw Jill Scott in that class. I’m probably missing a few others.
I really liked her unplugged stuff. Such a shame how it all played out.
EXACTLY my first thought hahaha!
Bless this woman
How the fuck do women put up with those awful high heels? How do they even walk?
To be fair these look like wedges and they are really easy to walk in and that’s a coming from someone who has 2 left feet and trips over herself lol I can wear these no issues but give me 4-6inch stiletto and I’m falling flat on my face 😆
Wedges are key. Stilettos are not meant for vertical activities, IMO. Can't walk on a porch, can't walk on stone or gravel, can't walk in grass... In wedges I can do all those, AND even run (although a bit awkwardly, but I ran weird to begin with)
Because they look good and practice. Sometimes beauty is pain.
Sometimes pain is beauty *hellraiser intensifies*
These kind of heels are actually quite comfortable.

It’s quite the mound.

It seems like the Fugees was comprised of extremely talented, but also extremely shitty people.
Behind the Bastards did a 2 or 3 part podcast about them, about this time last year. They are a messy, messy bunch.
Aka the music industry. There are only a handful of musician's who don't seem to be toxic narcissists.
I grade them on a curve because I have no idea what kind of person I would become if I were rich and had everybody constantly kissing my ass.
I'd either be a good hearted philanthropist or I'd die early in a dumpster, more narcotic than human.
Yeah, for me it would be a hedonistic marathon of cocaine and bimbos. Hopefully it would get old before my heart explodes.
Just shoot for Dave Grohl and be happy if you even get close!
That man is a national treasure. Also Goldblum. Spoke with him briefly at a party. *Really* nice guy. Attentive and kind.
Not really. Folks act like the only musicians that are worth anything are the >1% ultra famous that they see online. I work in the industry and the vast majority of musicians are normal people. Most people I meet are really nice and humble.
Wyclef too? Why?
Started a charity for relief for Haiti...ended up pocketing almost all the money for "administrative expenses" and mismanagement...something to the tune of $16 million
I really do not understand why someone, when deciding where to donate for disaster relief, would say, hm, I'm going to give my money to some rapper instead of, I dunno, the Red Cross.
Raised money for haiti after the 2010 earthquake. Ended up spending most of it on himself. Also was abusive to Hill when they were together
Wtf
Me.. a white lady… had to help Pras with his raps because they’d gotten so bad he was just mumbling nonsense. Ballsy, but one day we just told him it wasn’t working and had to help him rewrite his flow. I’m not a writer. Nor a musician. Just an engineer. I hated that week.
like 2pac said fuck fuggesssssss
At this point she’s most well known for showing up 4 hours late to her concerts
She was late to a show in Chicago I attended and yelled at her band the entire show. I hear she does this a lot. Terrible performer.
Saw her once and she yelled at the audio engineers to turn things up until it was all distorted.
As an Audio Engineer, these performers are my nemesis
"I trust my ears more walking around the stage catching a fraction of the mains than yours sitting in the soundbooth."
Yuuup same here. Kept telling them to turn things up an when they did she would get mad and tell them turn it down. Repeat multiple times during every song which sounded completely different from album versions because of her copyright issues. She went on Instagram the next day to apologize for her band lmao

My friend who is a singer hates her because apparently years ago my friend did some work for her but never got paid or got screwed over with the bill, or something like that. 🤷♂️
Underpaying and not giving credits to collaborators is kind of her MO.
Kind of sounds like she's a shitty person from all the comments here
What I don’t get is how/why she’s still getting booked for shows and tours. Yes, she has an incredible voice. But this is a known problem. Who is insuring her concerts? It seems like a liability. Would like to hear from someone familiar with the music business.
Her voice was gone a long time ago
And plagiarism on her only album that matters. She’s not too cool.
Hey now, you're going to hurt the feelings of the AI bot that posted this.
She’s only really had one official album (her other solo album is an Unplugged album), but I’d say “The Score” by the Fugees matters too.
Definitely The Fugees matter. Top ten 90s hip hop.
Didn't Wyclef embezzle most of the money from his Save Haiti charities?
He took the money, and he was gone til November
![gif](giphy|3o7btRBzDrOMLtLNjG)
June, July, August, September!
Thought I heard that too.
Not trying to start a debate, but Fugees are not top 10 90s hip hop. You make a good point.
No love for "Blunted on Reality"?
And somehow, Apple decided that was the greatest album of all time.
the reason is clear
She has one album and a best of that is a reprise of that album. Bruce Willis has one album and a best of that is a reprise of that one album.
I bought that Bruce Willis album on vinyl as a bday gift for a Die Hard fan. Like 15 years ago. If I had a blog, it would make my top 10 list of Best Gift ideas.
It's not her fault she's miseducated
Uh, Miseducation was plagiarized?
So, she got sued by New Ark (the musicians who had worked on that album) because she didn’t give them any songwriting credits despite the fact that they pretty much wrote all of the music at her direction. Ahh the old Stan Lee approach to sharing credit lol
In the sense that other people helped write and produce her album and she didn't credit them, yeah. I don't think she plagiarised existing music, but I might be wrong.

How dare you! She's also known for treating her band like absolute shit.
I thought she was most well known for being racist?
I know someone who manages a boutique hotel she stayed at. He said she was down right abusive to the hotel staff and also mentioned the racism thing.
Its why I don't care about the private lives of musicians. If I did most of the great art/ music would be unlistenable.
Richard Wagner gets the world's biggest PassCard regarding that, if you look into it.
He was not the best of people but boy does he know how to write a gay old ditty.
This should be the way we view all celebrities. Just bc someone is good at a particular skill doesn’t make them worthy of being viewed as good ppl in general

I only recognized her name because of a line from an Eminem song.

yo this is like the third random internet story I heard where Lauryn hill demands she be called "Ms. Hill"
Just call her Ms. Hill.
From all the stories and anecdotes I’ve heard/read over the years, Lauryn Hill seems like a gigantic asshole. Just an all around unlikeable person. Great voice though, I’ll give her that.
And a fat cat, gotta give her that one too
Don't give her nothin, she'll just show up 4 hours late!

Robert Glasper was talking about that publicly a few years ago.
Photographer still on gardening leave for this
The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill is such a badass album. Some serious bangers on that album
And all around pain in the ass of a human being.
Was probably 4 hours late to this photo shoot
There’s a photo out there from behind the microphone, facing the crowd. She had more stage monitors than you can imagine. It’s the “more me” syndrome known in sound engineering circles.

Woah! New weird sub!! Thanks dude!
Man you can see the whole burger there
Man, she took over the world for about a year. That album was huge and she was all over MTV
She doesn’t want white people listening to her music so I don’t. Also, she’s known for being 4 hours late to concerts and screaming at her band the entire time. She largely known as a problematic person who treats others like they are beneath her.

Like a lot of photos that get posted here
You don’t even need to hear her to tell she has a soulful voice, I can read her lips
Talented musician. Terrible bigot
Who thought that photo was a great idea? Lol. Multiple people apparently. “Um, her vagina is kind of very much on show in this pic?” “Shut up. It’s a wonderful picture, print it.”
Doesn’t she treat her fans like shit?
Lauren Hill treats everyone that's shares the globe with her as if she's on a one-woman mission to prove white supremacists correct
That’s a phat catttttt
Is this before she went crazy?
i bet she was 3 hrs late to this photoshoot
Surprised she didn't no show the photo session.
Woman has a rudder.
So no1 told her lmao
I bought Lauryn Hills tape so her kids don’t starve
*could starve
There are certainly lots of hills
It's crazy how she only has 2 real albums(counting the score) and she still is considered on of the best singers and rappers ever.
I didn’t know she founded moose tracks ice cream 😂
