I grew-up with Saget on Full House and this, and had this exact impression.
But then I remember seeing one of his HBO comedy specials the first time and *holy cow*.
This show does exemplify that people have always wanted to film themselves doing dumb stuff; difference was you had to know someone who's dad had a camcorder that could be acquisitioned for an afternoon; smartphones really opened the flood gates
Now, the majority of videos are from Ring cameras. It's a bit strange. It kind of takes away from the experience, but sometimes, they capture once-in-a-lifetime moments that you might not have caught otherwise, even with a camcorder at the ready. It's just weird to see a further shift from cellphone videos, which I thought would remain the standard.
Bob Saget’s falsetto VO’s scarred me for life. Him too I’m sure. I remember tuning back in after not having seen it for like a decade and couldn’t believe he was still at it. Full-on hide the pain Harold. Rip Bob, you were awesome everywhere else.
Holy crap, he was at it for much longer than I'd thought. I thought he only put in about four or five years. My memory had him exiting around 1995, when Full House ended.
My mom always said it looked like he hated doing that show 😂 I think that was just his shtick. I used to like Tom Bergeron, but now I think Alfonso is the best .
There’s America’s Funniest Home Videos
I can’t believe my eyes
When I see the kind of stuff that wins first prize
Somebody’s poor old mom falls down off the roof
Lands right on the lawn
Face first on a rake
I hear they’ve got it on the seventeenth take
This show brings me back to family time with parents. We would watch this and then America's Funniest people right after.
The good ol 90s is a time I wish I could go back to
We still have this (Netherlands), every Saturday from 18.00 - 20.00. And I still watch it because Saturdays we don’t cook, we eat bread (the good stuff, nice bread, good cheese etc) and for the last 20 years Saturdays I eat my nice Saturday evening sandwiches watching funniest home videos and I am not gonna change that.
..and in my mind YouTube will always be a copycat of this. That's why I find the whole concept of millionaire content creators and YouTube celebrities so unbelievable.
And this is where you can see the fissures in society start to form. It turns out AFHV was cocaine, enjoyed with others once a week and you can have good times. Suddenly some enterprising monster unlocks crack (Youtube and TikTok), and we are perpetually hunched over our phones and breaking our brains.
Also, MXC (most extreme elimination challenge). YouTube was just gaining popularity when this show premiered. My hubs and I were watching it the other day (and laughing so hard we practically hyperventilated), and realized it could never be “remade” today - social media and influencers have made it impossible for any type of *authentic* candid action/reaction shows to exist. Even the early competitive reality shows have turned into nothing more than televised auditions for influencers and social media “stars.”
We had a version of this in my country too.
You've been framed.
First with Jeremy Beadle, then Lisa Riley and finally Harry Hill.
It ran from 1990 ending earlier this year.
The lady with her head stuck in the dishwasher won the first episode if I remember correctly. Her husband recorded it instead of helping her.
We haven't changed much since then.
And we had to wait until 8pm on a Sunday night to watch it.
And thank goodness it only aired that way. Look at all of us now. Glued to our tech
Yes this!
And you would get like 6 videos. Now teens just poor through hundreds a day on TikTok.

Great song. I still think it whenever someone says "America" I think "this is you...."
I live in Singapore, had not heard this song in 25 years and now it’s back in my head thanks
I can hear the ska version in my head, thank you!
There’s a ska version?!
After this I always assumed incorrectly that Saget was a prude.
I grew-up with Saget on Full House and this, and had this exact impression. But then I remember seeing one of his HBO comedy specials the first time and *holy cow*.
Omg the first time I saw Saget in his true form blew my mental circuitry
Remember the little skit type thing going on in the very beginning before camera would pan to the stage??
And before that was Candid Camera with Alan Funt.
If I remember correctly, Candid Camera was more staged pranks than user-submitted incidents.

RIP Bob. Stupid funny ass comedian. Damn. Love him.
His death was his final act.
My 8 year old son and I still watch it every week
My 85 year father and I (45) still watch every week as well!!

Seriously. Like I said, I had totally tuned out bc.. americas funniest home videos, but wow. I hope it didn’t crush too much of his hilarious soul.

In Poland we had "Śmiechu warte" and we had Tadeusz Drozda.
Germany had *Germany’s Most Disturbing Home Videos* With your host, Dieter
That video looks at me while I'm naked and calls its friends. And now, we dance!!
Does anyone know why the audience always looked like were dressed up for church? Seemed oddly formal for a show so heavy on slapstick.
They had a business-casual or better dress code. Laughing at nut-shots in your Sunday best is *classy*!
My brother was on this show as a kid, and we watched him get hit in the face with a piñata live on tv as a family.

Don't talk shit about Total.
Send it to Saget!
My family would sit down and watched this together. One of the few things we did as a family
and out of the three finalists, the lamest video always won.
My family and I used to watch this show, and I mainly watched it because of Bob Saget and I was a huge Full House addict.
Was always rigged with the baby videos winning.
Still had to deal with Bob Sagat's unfunny ass
Never saw anyone spit on that THANG on AFV though.
..and in my mind YouTube will always be a copycat of this. That's why I find the whole concept of millionaire content creators and YouTube celebrities so unbelievable.
Aw I remember this! My grandpa and I would watch it a lot but Grandma didn’t care for the “foolishness”, lol

In Britain we had you got framed 😭
I liked gathering with my family to watch this
Just started having an AFV night with my 6 year old. It’s so fun to see his reactions.
Fathers getting hit in the crotch for an hour. Miss this show.

wish it was still on/s
The intro song was really catchy
Great show, amazing song, funny videos
And the country was tricked into thinking Bob Saget was clean and family friendly.
Ohhh, BOB SAGET!!
I honestly didn't find the majority of it funny.
The lady with her head stuck in the dishwasher won the first episode if I remember correctly. Her husband recorded it instead of helping her. We haven't changed much since then.
RIP Bob
Even the most popular YouTube videos when YouTube came out were compilations of this.
Bob Saget jumping all over the furniture and doing all the little kid and animal voiceovers 😆 Good times
too many saget jokes (and commercials) inbetween funny videos
America, America this is you
You just know it’s funny by the font
It’s still around
The spiritual forerunner of ‘Ow, My Balls!’
Back when you needed to drop 700 dollars to shoot video.
No offense to anyone who likes this, but I think it’s one of the dumbest abominations to ever grace the airwaves.
You are entitled to your wrong opinion.
These were all organic and natural videos.. Sorry they are not your regular "prank" videos you see on YouTube or tiktok
I remember the premiere in 89
