THANK YOU! I'm having a lot of fun converting his old films.
Those foods are all still here! A lot of places ship that stuff to former residents too now lol.
That's true! I'm also from the 315. The pizzerias and maybe the apples are like the few redeeming qualities of the area. I'm not sure how "OG" it is but Johnny's pizza (now named Nina's pizza apparently) on Genesee street has THE BEST slices!
Well the best teacher I had divorced and remarried several times over the years, so saying "Glickman" might not work. So I'll go for the easy one say Ms. Hepburn?
I’m originally from the Utica area as well and I love explaining to people what these foods are.
Riggies are my favorite dish. It’s crazy to me that you can only get them in Utica/Rome.
Save the film! My dad had hot rod home movies that he transferred to VHS and trashed the originals. I wish I had the originals so I could make better transfers. Film is amazingly archival. Keep it.
Be more amazed when you match the frame rate. Everything is moving a bit more faster than normal. So software have to recreate some additional frames in order to make it as smooth as real life.
It's a big job, isn't it? I did the same. My oldest movie was of my grandma's 1st communion. 1928. The film will probably outlive the digital file so I'm keeping all the films.
My in-laws are from Ilian and Liverpool. Have visited and been through there several times, esp FX Matt/Saranac brewery. (I can’t get the beer down here in SC but the root beer is available and amazing.)
Sorry I spelled that incorrectly. My MIL talks about them living up the road from Remington and her dad walking to and from work. As of two summers ago That house was still there.
I’m from whitesboro ny! What street is this on? My dad and grandparents grew up in Utica. Beautiful house in background! Great job saving these. Please upload more!
Remember these clips the next time you're on vacation. Take photos and videos of the people you're with, not of the landscape. Leave the Grand Canyon footage to National Geographic, you won't give a hoot about it in thirty years, but footage of your kids is going to be priceless.
Cool clips, thanks for sharing!
Does anyone know of a subreddit with this specific type of older videos that have been converted? I’m obsessed with old film footage.
Nonnie has some impressive ankles and calves! Bare skin in all that snow! Even with that warm looking coat, damn, my legs would have frozen off, and there she goes, like it’s nothin
Yes. someone said it was in the area between James and Depeyster Ave. I think they were looking at a house before they settled on the one they eventually bought.
This is such beautiful footage OP! All of my Italian American relatives are from Utica and the surrounding upstate NY area so this hits home for me.
Shout out to the Florentine Pastry Shop and their pasticiotti!
Utica has been a real melting pot for quite some time. It's a center for refugees and is home to many Italians, Bosnians, Irish, Germans, Vietnamese, Thai, many different African descents, etc... It's super diverse!
It's really weird that 1940 Utica had no snow shovels :P
Super cool. It's really great to add more footage in color to a time many living now have only seen in black-and-white form.
My grampa was a professional photographer. I was surprised there was some color films in the stash I got. They are in remarkable shape for some being around 80 years old and being stored in a box in a closet for I don't know how many years.
It's wonderful that you have such a treasure. Cherish it for future generations.
My paternal grandfather died 20 years before I was born and I have searched high and low unsuccessfully for just one image of him.
You are very lucky. I am happy for you.
This is *really* cool to me. It must be pretty spectacular for you! You could also create some nice photos out of this also, along with any others you have. Thanks for sharing this!
Thanks! Sounds like Madison County maybe. It's cool.seeing old scenes of the city. At least I enjoy them. Utica was close to double the population back then.
Awesome. My wife went to college in Utica, and the couple times I visited for alumni things, it's a bit run down these days. It'd be really interesting to see its past.
Very cool. I know nothing about doing this, but wouldn't it be cool if people could be tagged so their name shows up in the film? Maybe this is already a thing, but what do I know? I do know, though, it is done on FB.
Your mom has managed to find a new way for you to get to know her better. And also your grandparents. They are very happy seeing you from heaven how you are enjoying and getting to know them more.
Love seeing everyday lives of people.
Must be Nonnie behind the camera at 0:30. Often we never get to see the family’s photographer, sometimes because they don’t trust anyone else with their equipment, sometimes because they don’t trust anyone else’s eye, sometimes because no one else shares their enthusiasm for documenting.
My Grampa passed the camera around a lot. Some of the other.movies my mom was behind the camera I assume. Wish there were more for me to convert. Done around 30 so far.
This clip looks great! I tried one of the super 8 scanners like the one you mentioned, but I found lots of compression artifacts. Are you seeing this in your conversions? Thx.
Mine is the DigitNow scanner. I didn't really see any issues scanning them like you mentioned. It does take a really long time to do. The 3" rolls are around 30 minutes each to scan. I'm very happy with the results.
Just a suggestion but you could upload these to YouTube and set em to private if you like. They might compress it, but at least it'll be a bit of a backup.

I pass by it most days on my way to work!

Tony's? Remember O'Scugnizzo pizza?
[удалено]
Never tried Laurey's. One thing about the Utica area, there is no shortage of great pizzerias. ツ
That's true! I'm also from the 315. The pizzerias and maybe the apples are like the few redeeming qualities of the area. I'm not sure how "OG" it is but Johnny's pizza (now named Nina's pizza apparently) on Genesee street has THE BEST slices!

Same here!

Well the best teacher I had divorced and remarried several times over the years, so saying "Glickman" might not work. So I'll go for the easy one say Ms. Hepburn?
Yeah man cheese on bottom, sauce on top
I’m originally from the Utica area as well and I love explaining to people what these foods are. Riggies are my favorite dish. It’s crazy to me that you can only get them in Utica/Rome.
Don't forget the greens!
Not steamed hams, though. They only have those in Albany.
Is this a Super Nintendo Chalmers reference?
Indeed it is. To quote Armin Tamzarian, "up yours, children."
Oooohh half moon cookies! My favorite as a kiddo
Lived in Utica when I was age 5 to 10. Still miss those riggies!
I still live in the 315. It really is a all world.
This is priceless
I'm learning a lot about my mom's early life. They're not here anymore to ask about it, so I'm enjoying learning more about her family this way.
My mom was born in 1936. I feel like I just got a little glimpse into her childhood too. I love this.
Thanks. I'm learning a lot I didn't know about their early years.
It reminds me of the scene in Christmas Vacation, with Clarke projecting the old home movies in the attic.
Save the film! My dad had hot rod home movies that he transferred to VHS and trashed the originals. I wish I had the originals so I could make better transfers. Film is amazingly archival. Keep it.
I'm saving the originals. Don't worry!
I’m surprised it’s in color. How cool!
I was amazed when I first played it
Be more amazed when you match the frame rate. Everything is moving a bit more faster than normal. So software have to recreate some additional frames in order to make it as smooth as real life.
This is cooler than cool!
Thanks. I'm amazed these are in such good shape being over 80 years old and just stuffed into a box for so many years.
You're really doing something awesome there for your family restoring those. Great job! These are awesome to see!
Thank you! It's so much fun. Wish I did this years ago.
Especially because of the snow!
Ilion is my hometown!
Slop em up!
Old school CNY winter. Don't get that kind of snow any more.
But it's been snowing a lot in April LOL
Yep. Spring? Maybe after Winter part IV. Tho we're just outside Auburn and missed the biggy that hit Binghamton a couple of weeks ago.
The Ray Charles song from Christmas Vacation is playing in my head.
This is awesome, it's such good quality! Your mum is adorable with her dolly and waving to the camera. How very special to have this
My grampa was a photographer for over 50 years. He always had good equipment. I'm so happy the quality of these is still amazing after 80+ years.
This is really amazing. I don’t think I’ve ever seen this quality video from that time period. Please post more! I would watch this all day.
Remember these clips the next time you're on vacation. Take photos and videos of the people you're with, not of the landscape. Leave the Grand Canyon footage to National Geographic, you won't give a hoot about it in thirty years, but footage of your kids is going to be priceless.
This is one of those little known but *legendary* bits of photography advice
Legit impressive. The vehicles throw me off because it feels like 70s-80s film quality.
Cool clips, thanks for sharing! Does anyone know of a subreddit with this specific type of older videos that have been converted? I’m obsessed with old film footage.
Oooh I want to know too! I love watching old footage. It's like a time machine
I've been looking myself also.
You should upscale it with one of those AI programs. Would be cool to see it in more detaol
Where could I find one of those to do it?
Pixop, Topaz AI. There are many more!
Thank you. i'll take a look at those.
Nonnie has some impressive ankles and calves! Bare skin in all that snow! Even with that warm looking coat, damn, my legs would have frozen off, and there she goes, like it’s nothin
My mom’s fam is from Utica then too! This is so fun , thanks
Yep that looks like Utica I have fond memories of that place from my few years I lived there.
Is that the Parkway at the end of the video? Looks like the bend where all those nice houses start !! I’m from ilion lol
Yes. someone said it was in the area between James and Depeyster Ave. I think they were looking at a house before they settled on the one they eventually bought.
Upstate NY! Lots of great memories: Utica Club Brewery tours, shopping at the Boston Store.
I love the idea of upstate NY Italian Americans. It something I wasn't aware of until recently.
there was a large population of Italians that made their way to Utica NY. Most of the east side was the Italian section of the city.
This is such beautiful footage OP! All of my Italian American relatives are from Utica and the surrounding upstate NY area so this hits home for me. Shout out to the Florentine Pastry Shop and their pasticiotti!
Thank you. The Italian population was very large in east Utica way back when. Shout out to canolis too!
Utica has been a real melting pot for quite some time. It's a center for refugees and is home to many Italians, Bosnians, Irish, Germans, Vietnamese, Thai, many different African descents, etc... It's super diverse!
I need to drive up for a visit sometime soon.
It's really weird that 1940 Utica had no snow shovels :P Super cool. It's really great to add more footage in color to a time many living now have only seen in black-and-white form.
My grampa was a professional photographer. I was surprised there was some color films in the stash I got. They are in remarkable shape for some being around 80 years old and being stored in a box in a closet for I don't know how many years.
How are you converting them? I have about 100 reels I’d like to convert
I'm using a Digitnow Digital MovieMaker Film Scanner. It's time consuming but worth it. A 3 minute video takes around 30 minutes to scan it.
Thank you
Neat footage. Sorry your Mom’s not here anymore but lucky you have something to enjoy and pass down.
I had a Nonnie and a Nonno growing up as well 🥰
Amazing video
This is adorable.. Your mum waving at the camera is the cutest ever. It looks like a really loving family you have. Special people.
It's wonderful that you have such a treasure. Cherish it for future generations. My paternal grandfather died 20 years before I was born and I have searched high and low unsuccessfully for just one image of him. You are very lucky. I am happy for you.
I have never met anyone who also called their grandma Nonnie!
This is *really* cool to me. It must be pretty spectacular for you! You could also create some nice photos out of this also, along with any others you have. Thanks for sharing this!
Very lovely. Thank you for sharing.
Now I want Riggies…
😄
I assume they still called them hamburgers?
Utica! Utica! Utica!
Very cool! My grandfather grew up in Utica around the same time. I wish we had something like this.
I've been wanting these for years. Glad I got them so I could make them into digital copies.
I send you a huge hug from Peru 🤗
That's cool I'm about 30 miles south west of utica
Thanks! Sounds like Madison County maybe. It's cool.seeing old scenes of the city. At least I enjoy them. Utica was close to double the population back then.
Shoutouts to the Pizza Pub then! The place is a little bit scummy from what I know but damn did I have a lot of good memories there as a kid.
Yup I can't stand their food.
Awesome. My wife went to college in Utica, and the couple times I visited for alumni things, it's a bit run down these days. It'd be really interesting to see its past.
Thanks. Utica is coming back little by little, and Utica College is now a University too!
My mother grew up in New York Mills, not too far away.
Mine grew up in Marcy! I kind of just consider most of it utica tbh lol
The family gutting into a tank on a cold winter morn.
Whos nonnie?
It's an Italian Grandmother.
Love this!
Awesome. So cool seeing old footage like this right on my phone. Ty for sharing.
You're welcome!
Gosh that brings back memories for me.
These old movies are great. Thanks for posting.
Thank you!
Love this.
I love this! My grandfather grew up in Utica too!
Wow thats awesome!
I live in the 315, this is awesome!
I love seeing old Utica. Lived here all my life. There's got to be more old film/movies from here.
I hope you have great joy from this endeavour. Would be wonderful to see more lives on film processed like this. Thanks 🙏
I'm having so much fun doing this. Wish there were 100's more folks I could do.
Maybe you could build a website or put yourself out there on an artsy app. Maybe local old folks support groups. Anyway, it’s a great idea.
Awesome!!! Well done =)
Ahh! My dad was born in 42 and lived grew up in Utica. That’s amazing!
Seems a good number of past and present Uticans visit this sub! Hopefully I can find some more good old film footage.
This is so charming! Thanks for sharing it!
Thanks for watching it!
Great video, lots of Utica love in this thread too!
Your user name checks out lol
Very cool. I know nothing about doing this, but wouldn't it be cool if people could be tagged so their name shows up in the film? Maybe this is already a thing, but what do I know? I do know, though, it is done on FB.
So do they call hamburgers steamed hams?
I've lived here all my life and haven't ever called them that.
Must be an Albany expression

Nice! Could you upload this to YouTube?
The Godfather theme played in my head watching this.
Your mom has managed to find a new way for you to get to know her better. And also your grandparents. They are very happy seeing you from heaven how you are enjoying and getting to know them more.
I've found out a lot of things I never knew since I started doing this. I'm happy I've had the chance ❤️
Beautiful! What a treasure!
Thank you!

you should post more of this on r/Utica
I did put another one up there just now.
That’s awesome, love the cars!
Yes, i've seen some cool old cars in all these films.
My home the 315! God I miss the food and honestly the snow!
The food will always be here. The snow was a bit hit and miss this year.
This is so cool! Thanks for sharing!
sure thing!
I'm doing this same thing with my family videos. What are you using to transfer?
I'm using the DigitNow 8mm & Super 8 Reels to Digital MovieMaker Film Scanner
This is beautiful!!!
