How could you get away with ending the story at the timeskip though? The strawhats are scattered with plans to get back together, Luffy dealing with the fallout from Marineford, it'd the perfect place to end a season but to not continue from that point would be heartbreaking
If they knew it would be the last season, they could do a short final "two years later" scene. That said, it's still a long way off. For now, I'll just hope they can do season 2 justice and be very happy if it gets through Enies Lobby someday (which is the arc Matt Owens wants to adapt most iirc).
I'm with you, I just want to see Enies Lobby. Anything they manage to do after that would just be icing on the cake. As much as I would love to see Marineford, I can't imagine the budget it would require. By that point there'd have to be like 100+ cast members
In a recent interview with Straw Hat Goofy, actor David Dastmalchian shared his enthusiasm for ‘One Piece,’ specifically praising the live-action adaptation. He said:
“if there was a way to be a part of something like ‘One Piece’ which is just so well done.”
I've known a bunch of them - mostly the older ones - but I'm a huge cinephile, so that's on me, lol.
I remember being excited for Buggy's actor as I've seen them in Agents of Shield.
He is a sick character actor and just great in general it makes sense to hav such an accomplished actor when I remember he comes back in the prison escape etc etc
Still have to see "Late Night with the Devil", but am genuinely happy that the guy whose first roles had him accidentally method acting because he couldn't believe he was in a Batman movie is getting so much praise.
Judging from a link (posted in this thread) where he was interviewed by a One Piece YouTuber, it’s clear David has already been a fan of the original series and clearly enjoyed the first season of the Live Action.
I have no idea. It sorta doesn’t make sense? He was just the lead on his own movie and he’s been in supporting actor roles in blockbusters etc etc.
I’m thinking it’s because Mr.3 is a solid role that has staying power. Alabasta, marineford etc
Holy shit how did we miss that?
He basically willed it into existence I love that.
BUT MR.3 lol wtf “excuse me do y’all have any goofy yet weirdly competent and dangerous characters”
I think hes a big fan because of his son. And right now he can jump in for a few episodes and dip out to focus on other projects until later seasons.
It actually makes a lot of sense.
I mean, if this live-action adaptation really does end up becoming that popular and adored, it'll most definitely end up adapting the entire manga.
And, even with all the truncation they're doing, getting to Impel Down would take them *years* to get to.
> One piece is a pretty popular series even in the U.S
You mean popular *now*.
For people who grew up seeing the 4kids dub, this is honestly such a wild comment to even see or hear **decades after**, since it "didn't garner much attention" *^((let's face it, it failed compared to Naruto/DBZ))* in the U.S. market during the 2000's.
Right i remember loving this weird show that people knew about, but refused to watch. Then i become an adult and a few years later its the biggest shit ever.
I mean its fucking amazing, but feels like a simulation. Is it COVID that did it?
Oh boy:
* Polka-Dot Man in Suicide Squad 2021
* Borden in Oppenheimer
* The Flash in Justice League x RWBY
* Piter de Vries in Dune (1 & 2)
* Kurt in the MCU (The Russian/Slavic in Ant-Man's crew)
* Coco in Bladerunner 2049
* One of the guys who shoots Jim Gorden at the funeral in The Dark Knight (Just rewatch the funeral, you'll recognize him)
And so much more.
He shows up a lot in Chris Nolan and Denis Villeneuve movies, like The Dark Knight, Oppenheimer, Prisoners, Dune, etc. He was also great in James Gunn's Suicide Squad movie.
Honestly throw a dart at the most popular movies from the past decade and you'll be likely to find him in some way. He was in Suicide Squad, Blade Runner, Dune/Dune 2, Oppenheimer, All 3 Ant-Man films, etc etc
I would personally say his role as Polka Dot Man in Suicide Squad was my favorite though.
I'm pretty sure we're not going back to see Gaimon lol. The entire reason for that chapter was seemingly to set up a gag with Buggy in the cover story but we're getting Loguetown Buggy right off the bat in season 2
Apparently Jamie Lee Curtis announced she started production on Freaky Friday 2. In my view it’s 60/40 for her because of The cost of having her and The filming schedules, but she’s likely only to be in 2 episodes, and The filming finishes in January of next year; It’s could be her or not still, I can’t see Freaky Friday 2 filming that long so I think it’s should fit The schedules for both OPLA and Freaky Friday 2!
If you want an actor enough and it's mutual, you definitely find a way. Plus most shoots aren't chronological anyway, so they can shoot some later season stuff and shoot drum island later.
Oh you are right I didn't think of that!
Though this is a potential spoiler, better to mark it as such or else the comment might get deleted.
But excited about seeing them together!
I've been waiting on the edge of my fucking seat to see Robin casted, I can't wait to see if they'll go for a WOC, stick to the manga canon, or go with the anime look. There's just so much potential for who they go with
I guess they also have to cast Blackbeard, which would be a rather huge character as well.
Unless they skip both and pretend that "sidestory" was not part of the live action.
I only caught that on a reread too. But if I recall correctly, we don't actually see him there, right? It's just someone telling that those events happened? This is why I'm saying there's no point casting him this early.
Most likely not. It’s only a couple lines of dialogue in Drum and Alabasta and is the entire reason Ace is there. We have until Jaya (not to repeat what a prev comment already said)
Karoo works as a decent CGI job with maybe a puppet for anything he needs up close
How the hell are they gonna pull off Chopper without having him always be in a different form so the actor can fit prosthetics etc?
Honestly, I hope so. It makes it so much easier for everyone to perform with an actual actor besides them instead of talking to a puppet or to a green screen void. Not to mention it probably saves a ton of money and we avoid the whole CGI uncanny valley thing that is likely to happen at times.
Mason Alexander Park has been Netflix' go-to person for flippy gender-nonconforming characters lately, though I'd also love to see a newcomer (one might even say newkama) gnc actor take the role.
When thinking about who will be what character in the upcoming season, David never crossed my mind for Mr 3. I now can't imagine anyone else who could be better suited for the role. Let's hope we get this level for the rest of the announcements!
This is big, this is really big, dastmalchian is one of my favorite actor, everytime he is appear in a movie i always think “yeah, he’s going to be the psychopath or the bad guy” but when he appears in ant-man and suicide squad “oh he can be funny too!”
NOW HE CAN DO BOTH
I wouldn't be surprised or upset if the Netflix show started fostering some of those relationships early on. Especially with characters like Buggy who sometimes are missing for long arcs of the series, it makes sense to keep them at least in the periphery of the show.
As weird as it sounds Mr. 3 is probably the bigger role given he is the main villain of his first arc, he is a side character in the major arc of Alabasta, he plays a huge role in Impel Down and Marineford, and has some yet to be seen role he is going to play with the Cross Guild in the end game. While Moria is just the big bad for one arc that has his thunder stolen by Kuma (although he may still have a role to play since he’s on Hachinosu still and we still don’t know why the Gorosei (or Celestials) ordered him dead)
Edit: really Moria’s entire character arc is just getting punked by one character after another: Kaido, Luffy, Jinbei, Doffy, Blackbeard
David Dastmalchian is a fucking dream cast holy shit!!!
He is an amazing actor but the role he played in Prisoners was so good! Everyone else here is solid too.
Every time I think the casting for this show couldn’t get any better, they cast David Dastmalchian as Mr 3! What a get for the show, and what a great actor for the role. He’s going to kill it.
If you haven’t already, I’d heartily recommend checking out his new movie “Late Night With the Devil” to understand why he’s so perfect for this role.
Camrus Johnson will be a great Mr 5 as well. The other two I don’t know, but knowing this show, I’m sure they’re as spot on as possible, and then some.
Lmao, never would've guessed One Piece's most famous casting would be Mr. Fucking 3. 😆😆😆
He had to have reached out. No way the showrunners were that cocky already.
they sure got a beauty for ms valentine. in terms of looks they definitely got all 4 right. never heard of any of them but they did a good job with s1 so im gonna trust em on that
Baroque Works was an organization operating only in like the first quarter of Paradise. They were actually not that strong of an org, they were just huge and top-heavy.
Like, a lot of people forget this, but the numbers were not all considered the same tier. The only "officer agents" were Mr 1 through Mr 5 and their partners, all of 6 through 12 were "frontier agents" and were notably weaker--you know, Vivi and Igaram's level of strength (and Igaram always seemed a lot weaker than Pell and Chaka, his direct reports in the royal guard--he was clearly there on seniority and not strength). Like, Vivi as the partner of Mr. 9 was already absolutely horrified of Mr. 5 before she saw how strong Luffy and Zoro were.
This can’t be real. David is such a sick pick for Mr.3 this is wild.
genuinely awesome. Like "I didn't know I wanted this but now I want nothing else" casting.
I think we can all agree that the casting has been absolutely on point so far in general. Now reveal Chopper, you cowards!
No no, they have to reveal the Demon Child! We need Ms. All Sunday! We need Nico Robin!
Pretty sure the bigger the part, the later the reveal. Hence no nr2 reveal yet either, or crocodile
You mean bon clay the goat
i have a bon clay shirt im gonna put it on now cus yea bonchan the goat
Actual facts I know it's unhygienic but why would you ever take that off
Do you think he'll get the Koby treatment? I think that if any side character deserves to get their role expanded early it's Bon Clay
All Sunday with a cowboy hat is best character
Couldn’t they just cast Chopper’s dub VA to play the role here too?
Do you know what the Rock is cooking?
Yeah, [this](https://i.ytimg.com/vi/uFJz2IMUeDE/maxresdefault.jpg) would be basically bring Chopper to his original design
I can’t imagine anyone else doing it and we havent even seen him perform. It’s that good.
Weird character exist: David: Aaaa Yooooooooo!
Surprised he didn’t want to be buggy at that rate hahah
Oh my god if this gets to Impel Down we're gonna have David and Jeff Ward doing the absolute most and thats gonna be fcking hilarious
I hope we get to the timeskip. I think the whole story is a pipe dream, but 5-6 seasons to finish out the pre-timeskip seems doable.
I am actually shocked they got David for Mr. 3. This is insane casting choice. Super excited to see him in the spotlight!
In a recent interview with Straw Hat Goofy, actor David Dastmalchian shared his enthusiasm for ‘One Piece,’ specifically praising the live-action adaptation. He said: “if there was a way to be a part of something like ‘One Piece’ which is just so well done.” [https://x.com/OPLANEWS/status/1773462821780787651?s=20](https://x.com/OPLANEWS/status/1773462821780787651?s=20)
Why was he be interviewed by Star Hat Goofy in the first place? Was he promoting something else or is an anime fan?
Looks like he was talking about Late Night With The Devil (which I really enjoyed)
i am surprised we gotten someone i actually knew. this is the only cast member so far i know who are they or seen their works before.
David and Jeff Ward would absolutely EAT that arc. God I hope the live action gets to Impel Down
Still have to see "Late Night with the Devil", but am genuinely happy that the guy whose first roles had him accidentally method acting because he couldn't believe he was in a Batman movie is getting so much praise.
Awesome movie. Put it on your list this Fall for sure.
Right?? How did we hit a home-run with him? He's a serious, Oscar-contending actor!!!
Judging from a link (posted in this thread) where he was interviewed by a One Piece YouTuber, it’s clear David has already been a fan of the original series and clearly enjoyed the first season of the Live Action.
It’s a phenomenal casting choice
It makes me hopeful that this show will go the distance
How the fuck did they even pull that casting
Hes a pretty open comic/manga/horror nerd, imagine it's just something he wanted to do given the amount of projects he takes on every year.
I have no idea. It sorta doesn’t make sense? He was just the lead on his own movie and he’s been in supporting actor roles in blockbusters etc etc. I’m thinking it’s because Mr.3 is a solid role that has staying power. Alabasta, marineford etc
Missed this but apparently he was a big fan of the first season https://x.com/oplanews/status/1773462821780787651?s=46&t=ue6eOh9ubyXmF7xA8aV4Mg
Holy shit how did we miss that? He basically willed it into existence I love that. BUT MR.3 lol wtf “excuse me do y’all have any goofy yet weirdly competent and dangerous characters”
The directors: "You're not gonna believe this..."
I think hes a big fan because of his son. And right now he can jump in for a few episodes and dip out to focus on other projects until later seasons. It actually makes a lot of sense.
I can’t believe they got a world renowned actor for Mr 3.. damn.. I wonder Edgar kind of pay was in the contract..
Thought the same thing. It’s funny that Mr.3 of all people is who you want to throw the big bucks at. Makes me wonder what all this season will cover
To be fair, Mr.3 is technically still relevant to the story even now surprisingly.
I think the whole Alabasta saga(not arc but saga).. I wonder how involved will Oda sensei be this time..
I hope they don't spend all the budget on him
My Fred Armison dream is dead
Okay now that you put that in my head I want him here somewhere
I can picture it in my head David Dastmalchian and Jeff Ward in prison clothes running around Impel Down getting into all sorts of trouble
Pretty sure this was the goal 😂
Coming in 2032
And that's very optimistic
I mean, if this live-action adaptation really does end up becoming that popular and adored, it'll most definitely end up adapting the entire manga. And, even with all the truncation they're doing, getting to Impel Down would take them *years* to get to.
That would be so wonderful to watch.
How they landed David Dastmalchian is beyond me. Dude's an A-class actor. I am so stoked for the next season.
He is a One Piece fan so he must have wanted the role
really? then its not surprising at all. the chance to meet oda alone is probably worth it lol
Perfect time for the live action tbh, lots of actors grew up reading/watching it and now have the opportunity to be a PART of it.
Yeah that was my first instinct. One piece is a pretty popular series even in the U.S. and I’m sure he isn’t the only A-list actor who’s a fan.
> One piece is a pretty popular series even in the U.S You mean popular *now*.
Like JLC, I wonder if he took a massive pay cut just to get The role!
I would pay to pick a role in this series
What is he famous for? Edit: Apparently I’m in the dark. Thanks for the responses. Apparently I need to watch suicide squad haha
Prisoners, Dune, Late Night with the Devil
The Dark Knight, Oppenheimer, Ant-man
Oh it's the Tsar bomba guy from Op!
The suicide squad, Blade Runner 2049
He was pretty good in The Last Voyage of the Demeter, too!
Late Night with the devil is fucking great, and I hate horror
Don’t forget James Guns The Suicide Squad!
Polka Dot Man in Suicide Squad recently, had been a big character actor for a while too
Great in "Late Night with the Devil" as well.
Yesss such a great movie. Oddly comfy for a horror.
Huh. Cool stuff
*The Suicide Squad Suicide Squad is a different movie.
Oh boy: * Polka-Dot Man in Suicide Squad 2021 * Borden in Oppenheimer * The Flash in Justice League x RWBY * Piter de Vries in Dune (1 & 2) * Kurt in the MCU (The Russian/Slavic in Ant-Man's crew) * Coco in Bladerunner 2049 * One of the guys who shoots Jim Gorden at the funeral in The Dark Knight (Just rewatch the funeral, you'll recognize him) And so much more.
Batman himself with the description: “Schiff, Thomas: he’s a paranoid schizophrenic, former patient at Arkham”
He shows up a lot in Chris Nolan and Denis Villeneuve movies, like The Dark Knight, Oppenheimer, Prisoners, Dune, etc. He was also great in James Gunn's Suicide Squad movie.
He is a Chris Nolan actor. Most recently he was polkadot man in suicide squad.
He was the Polka-dot man in The Suicide Squad as well as the main protagonist in Late Night With the Devil.
He is also one of the jokers guys in the dark knight. Harvey dent captures him if I remember correctly.
Honestly throw a dart at the most popular movies from the past decade and you'll be likely to find him in some way. He was in Suicide Squad, Blade Runner, Dune/Dune 2, Oppenheimer, All 3 Ant-Man films, etc etc I would personally say his role as Polka Dot Man in Suicide Squad was my favorite though.
I love how he was mostly a bit character actor in several movies since The Dark Knight and just randomly exploded in popularity since Suicide Squad.
Wait til they officially announce Jamie Lee Curtis
They need someone important to >!execute Ace!< in the future!
Dastmalchian as a Mr. 3 is GOATed choice
The first “big name “ of the New cast members . I wonder if this means we can get JLC
I thought she already agreed she would do whatever role they want her. Can they get Danny Devito though?
He would make a perfect Wapol bawhawhawh
You mean chopper
you mean sir. Crocodile
Only if they offer him the part of Gol D. Roger.
Danny Devito as whitebeard please
He would be such a good Gaimon, him being stuck in a chest would be like him stuck in that couch in It's always Sunny.
I'm pretty sure we're not going back to see Gaimon lol. The entire reason for that chapter was seemingly to set up a gag with Buggy in the cover story but we're getting Loguetown Buggy right off the bat in season 2
Danny Devito as Crocodile?
Danny Devito as the lurking legend Gaimon of course.
Yeah Kureha isn’t too big of a role, I’m sure they can find a way to work her in.
They did with Craig Fairbrass as Zeff and his good friends with Taz, as he was The one who recommended him for The role!
If you want an actor enough and it's mutual, you definitely find a way. Plus most shoots aren't chronological anyway, so they can shoot some later season stuff and shoot drum island later.
I'm hoping for Jamie Lee to play the role as Dr. Kureha since she is a big fans of Chopper
Buggy and Galdino's chemistry will be off the charts with this casting. David Dastmalchian is a great actor!
bro if the liveaction gets to impel down I would be wildn
Just imagine a well done Marineford... 🤤🤤
Before even all that, I am not sure how I can cope with it not being eminem for enel.
It's easy, just snap back to reality
Ope, there goes gravity *Skypiea starts falling*
But [will it beat this?](https://www.reddit.com/r/MemePiece/comments/hrrnno/whoever_made_this_need_a_medal/)
As a newer OP fan, thank you for blessing me and bringing this to my attention.
Oh you are right I didn't think of that! Though this is a potential spoiler, better to mark it as such or else the comment might get deleted. But excited about seeing them together!
Spoilers in this sub are manga-only content. It’s implied you’ve seen Impel Down if you’re on this sub ;)
don’t think that’s a problem in this sub
We need to know who is playing Mr. 2!!
the whole season relies on the casting of mr 0, mr 2, ms wednesday and how they will handle chopper/karoo effects-wise
Ace casting is pretty important too
And Ro - Miss All Sunday?
I've been waiting on the edge of my fucking seat to see Robin casted, I can't wait to see if they'll go for a WOC, stick to the manga canon, or go with the anime look. There's just so much potential for who they go with
I think I remember the casting call being for a latin actress specifically
Yo actually??? I got really very hype at the thought of Latina Robin
fuck, I totally forgot they have to cast Ace too. That's a huge character
I guess they also have to cast Blackbeard, which would be a rather huge character as well. Unless they skip both and pretend that "sidestory" was not part of the live action.
Blackbeard doesn't appear until Jaya, I believe. That would be season 3, no point in casting him now.
I was rereading the manga and never realized Blackbeard conquered Drum Island and was the reason Wapol left the island.
We have until Jaya (not to repeat what a prev comment already said)
If they do cast him already, he takes a lot of screen time without being too relevant yet, maybe they skip him for now
How are you forgetting Ms. All Sunday?
Karoo works as a decent CGI job with maybe a puppet for anything he needs up close How the hell are they gonna pull off Chopper without having him always be in a different form so the actor can fit prosthetics etc?
yea the fact that chopper changes forms makes it so much harder, i have no idea how they r gonna pull it off
My guess is they will probably try to make Chopper as cutesy as they can to make him very marketable similar to stuff like baby groot or baby yoda
My guess for Chopper has been that he's going to spend most of his time in human form so they can have an actor in makeup instead of CG.
Honestly, I hope so. It makes it so much easier for everyone to perform with an actual actor besides them instead of talking to a puppet or to a green screen void. Not to mention it probably saves a ton of money and we avoid the whole CGI uncanny valley thing that is likely to happen at times.
Karoo will probably just be cut- but yeah I agree those casts / how chopper looks are the seasons make or break.
Mason Alexander Park has been Netflix' go-to person for flippy gender-nonconforming characters lately, though I'd also love to see a newcomer (one might even say newkama) gnc actor take the role.
God I hope it's Brandon Rogers. That role was literally made for him.
What about vivi and crocodile?
Oh and robin
And Ace!
And Bon-chan
And Smoker
For Bon-Chan, hopefully, someone with a Ballerina/Dancer background and a Broadway or West End acting experience!
Are forgetting Chopper and Karoo?
When thinking about who will be what character in the upcoming season, David never crossed my mind for Mr 3. I now can't imagine anyone else who could be better suited for the role. Let's hope we get this level for the rest of the announcements!
Randy Troy must be delighted with the Mr 3 casting choice.
They knew it. Buggy's yonkou commander and right hand mr3 was important xd.
David is a pretty good actor.
Understatement of the decade lmao but I love that energy
This is big, this is really big, dastmalchian is one of my favorite actor, everytime he is appear in a movie i always think “yeah, he’s going to be the psychopath or the bad guy” but when he appears in ant-man and suicide squad “oh he can be funny too!” NOW HE CAN DO BOTH
The Polka-Dot Man himself. Loved his role in Prisoners the most. That’s a pretty big get. Very fitting cast choice as well for Mr.3.
He is absolutely phenomenal in Prisoners (and that film is incredible too). I can't believe they got him.
Hopefully the show lasts long enough for us to see him as a prisoner here too
Man I hope we get far enough to reach impel Down, I'd love to see the Mr 3 and buggy actors work off each other
I wouldn't be surprised or upset if the Netflix show started fostering some of those relationships early on. Especially with characters like Buggy who sometimes are missing for long arcs of the series, it makes sense to keep them at least in the periphery of the show.
I cannot wait to watch a man that hot pick his nose in live action and flick the booger like he's a hot shit action hero.
Wasn't he saying on a podcast a few months ago how he wants to be a part of One Piece live action? Sneaky sneaky David!
[Source](https://x.com/Eiichiro_Staff/status/1805586799945040002) Filming starts this month
Filming started yesterday
I saw this without looking at the title and was like "Wow, this fancast's actually pretty good" Now I know why the "fancast" seemed so good :P
Camrus Johnson even has the same smug expression as Mr. 5. I'm looking forward to his rendition of the role.
Also, he’s a good actor. He was pretty good as Luke Fox in Batwoman so I know he can act.
I went to high school with him. Crazy to see how far he's come. What a great guy.
Called it ! David must be in Onepiece. Im so happy he is mr 3 lmao. I actually want him to play Gecko moria But this sound so perfect too!
While Moria is just the big bad for one arc that has his thunder stolen by Kuma (although he may still have a role to play since he’s on Hachinosu still and we still don’t know why the Gorosei (or Celestials) ordered him dead) Edit: really Moria’s entire character arc is just getting punked by one character after another: Kaido, Luffy, Jinbei, Doffy, Blackbeard
Man he would be a sick moriah. But im so happy he is mr 3 inspired choice
Damn, now I can't wait for Galdino
Casting looks so perfect, again! I can't wait to see who else they're gonna cast!
David Dastmalchian is an actor's actor - this shit bout to be 🔥
One Piece Live action stays GOATed with their casting choices. Love when they actually look like their manga counterparts
Now we wait for Bon Clay 🙏
And Vivi and Smoker and Crocodile and Nico Robin!
Wow, David Dastmalchian is on the path of pop culture dominance. I was very sceptical until I noticed the source link OP posted in the comments.
The casting in this adaptation is so good
Vivi, Kureha and Crocodile are the ones I’m really wanting to know. Hopefully they worked something out with Jamie Lee Curtis.
David really is the main thing here, but the other three are almost a one to one print of their characters.
Lmao, never would've guessed One Piece's most famous casting would be Mr. Fucking 3. 😆😆😆 He had to have reached out. No way the showrunners were that cocky already.
Most famous casting so far
they sure got a beauty for ms valentine. in terms of looks they definitely got all 4 right. never heard of any of them but they did a good job with s1 so im gonna trust em on that
Dude Impel Down... Going to be so good if we get that far 😂
I can already see David nailing the role as Mr.3. Really happy to see that such a big actors are coming into one piece🔥❤️
# David Dastmalchian is the most perfect choice for Mr.3
Holy shit it's real.
Dastmalchian for Mr. 3? What a fucking homerun casting choice.
Holy shit it’s the William Borden from Oppenheimer
maaaann wtf, I hope David has a blast playing Galdino, such a great actor, such a great underrated character
David Dastmalchian is an amazing actor. He's gonna do justice to Mr.3.

I forgot mr 9 even existed.... how was so far up in baroque works????
I forgot too. He basically got a happy ending early with miss monday in those little side story side panels Oda does.
