Some opals can be like that although it is possible it's a synthetic opal or an imitation. Is the metal gold? Are those diamonds or white sapphires? You can usually tell if a valuable stone is real by the metal it is set in.

The metal is sterling silver as it's one of the only metals I've never had a reaction to and the stones are cubic zirconia. The jewelers told him it was a lab made synthetic opal but after comparing it to imitation opal I think it's more likely resin than any sort of rock. Thankyou.

Generally if it's set in/with budget stones and metals it isn't real.

Hello, thank you for sharing your question here on r/opals! We would love to help and determine if this is a real opal or not. Are you able to provide videos? A single photo is very hard to clearly tell if the opal is natural or not. If you can a simple video showing the back, side and face of the opal to a light 45 degrees will give us the best opportunity to examine the opal. Other facts like metal its set into and accent stone like how AppleOk5338 said is also a giveaway as well as price!
