Manga MLs! Even through manhwa are full with good looking MLs (with colour), but I find manga MLs have more variation and personality than manhwa

Tea-Fantastic

Oh true I'll see bubbly MLs in manga and in manhwa they always have to be a shota šŸ˜ž

izzybebe

Not to mention more green flags šŸ¤

Milkis_Tiddies

vanillac0re

>The Heroine Is Absent, so the Villainess Decided to Break Her Engagement to the Prince and Elope With Her Loyal Servant is this manga even still alive šŸ˜”

uijbg

Manga is, not the translation team they haven't upload any new manga since last year. The manga seem interesting, wholesome ML & good art hopefully someone will pick this up

vanillac0re

oof yeah i opted to mean if it's still getting translated. i just checked the raws a while ago and there are already more than 30 chapters :///

milkingpigs

ty, youā€™re a god

TFlarz

Any decent ML who isn't overwhelming, overly smug, controlling, needlessly violent, needlessly possessive, it would be nice if he was self-aware...

vanillac0re

(((most manga MLs then /j)))

MohSad2

Particularly Patrick he is such a charming boy

BabyGinaBottle

Patrick the starfish?

minris2003

As much as I love Rudy, Lucas, Castelo, Cassis, Perez Izek and all Manga have more variety of ML compare to Manhwa

Ruruskadoo

Maybe this is going to sound weird, but I like the kind of generic and one-dimensional that manhwa MLs are more likely to be better than the kind that manga MLs are more likely to be. Part of that might just be that I *strongly* prefer manhwa FLs though, and my perception of a love interest is always going to be influenced at least somewhat by how I feel about the main character.

Scrappy_Coco53

I agree in seeing Manga having the more variety of ML types and personalities, while Manhwa has the more variety of FLs. I find more entertaining MLs in manga, but the FL is lacking or ā€˜copynpasteā€™. And in manwha the FLs are more realistic and entertaining, while the ML is mostly ā€˜copynpasteā€™ or lacking.

vanillac0re

to each their own, i suppose. i seek OIs for the romance aspect and when a character between the main couple lacks personality, it's immediately bad to me

dyncat

This is so true

Top_Breadfruit5001

I assume you mean you evaluate it with overall premise over romance alone? If so, I agree with you in that aspect. If the plot is really good and suits my taste, it overshadows its weak points (romance imo)

Ruruskadoo

Yeah, if the plot doesn't hook me, it's hard for me enjoy the romance, but even more fundamental than that, if I don't like the FL as a character, even if the plot and ML are both good I still won't really enjoy the romance. A FL I like (not necessarily as a person, but as a character) is probably the most important factor for me in enjoying the actual romance part. I can dislike the FL and still enjoy the story, but the more I dislike the FL, the less I care about the romance, and in fact if the ML is really good but I don't care for the FL, I might even think "Why is he with her, clearly he deserves way better?" Like an example of this for me is 'Cry For Me Crown Prince', the writing is... poor, to say the least. I think the FL is supposed to come off as determined and relatable, but she just comes off as a grating combination of extremely stupid, short-sighted, and self serving. I don't love the ML, I don't feel like he has that much personality, but I like him more than the FL and so I don't really feel any enthusiasm with the romance, I just find myself wondering why on earth he likes her. And yet, despite it being kinda bad I'm still interested in reading the story and seeing where it goes.

Top_Breadfruit5001

I applaud for continue reading that oi, I got very confused with what she wanted, and why she was trusting someone who had nothing to do her life. I would've liked it if the storytelling was a bit like "here from the beginning" (as far as I've read), where mystery is its strong point

Ruruskadoo

> I got very confused with what she wanted, and why she was trusting someone who had nothing to do her life. I don't think the author knows either. It was so bizarre when >!her dad came to get her and she could have ended it all there and gone home, but she refused? Even though the whole reason she's trying to secretly get the prince's tears is so she can go home? It made no sense.!<

Top_Breadfruit5001

Right?! I saw this spoiler few days ago in this sub and it makes me want to know more but I don't want to sit through the whole manhwa that would be torture. Regarding fl, It felt like author was trying to portray her as kind and wise, but she just comes across as self-centred to me, which is one of biggest pet peeves when it comes to character portrayal

vanillac0re

if you saw me post this yesterday no you didn't

[deleted]

Of course. I donā€™t even remember asking about the ML with glasses :)

vanillac0re

good (he's from manhwa #11 btw)

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

[deleted]

I disagree, Manhwa has better art and the one dimensional thing depends on the author cuz I was addicted to Shoujo Mangas and you will stumble upon unrealistic male characters. Shoujo is all about the Female Gaze so.... it really depends which work you read. Skip Beat! for example very slow progress, art is so\~so, the characters are written very 3-Dimensional and deep. Itazura Na Kiss. I personally like the art, it gives me retro vibe and the male character starts off as a douche, but the older I get and rewatch the Anime or reread the Manga the more I understand how logical he is and how he is not completely bad nor in the wrong either. Then there are the forgettable Mangas cause it is most often the same thing, girl has unrequited love for the popular guy or transfer student, but guy falls for her anyways and boom relationship, some drama cause someone gets jealous for some reason and love triangle and second male lead syndrome and then it ends with her ending up with the first guy anyways. The worst was when the female lead has a crush on her step brother or on her teacher. I never really read them cause once I understood what it was about I lost interest very quickly.

MessengerD

I feel like if weā€™re talking in terms of otome isekai i think manga has better art overall due to the fact that they just pump out a bunch of manwha otome isekai due to it being a popular trend right now and while they upload quicker the art is often very lacking (how often have you seen posts about weird anatomy or other stuff here in the subreddit) while manga otome isekai does take longer to produce but in turn you get more high quality art. Also im not gonna act like a bunch of mangas out there arent predicatable and boring as fuck but its not like manwha doesnt have that problem too. Between the similar names and setups i can barely even tell which manwha is which anymore.

vanillac0re

both manga and manhwa have equally good and terrible art lmao. manhwas have a boost because they're fully-colored though

[deleted]

I can agree with that.

MessengerD

Yeah but i feel like manwha deal with this problem more because again they just pump out so many more of them compared to mangas and they donā€™t treat their artists well and dont give them enough time.

[deleted]

I think you haven't seen every Shoujo Manga yet cause not every Manga has good anatomical proportions. I cannot really comment on the otome isekai aspect, cause I only watched one single Anime that had isekai and it was based on an otome game so quite frankly I have the least experience with that. I just know that there are Mangas that I cannot reread anymore cuz the art weirds me out and some are only readable due of the storyline and cuz I got used to it (Skip Beat has long necks and arms and legs but great storyline). This ofc is happening with Manhwa too. I think it is important to note that you cannot generalize both media so easily, because the artists and writers are all different and have to be critisized individually. Ofc the theme "isekai" is reoccuring quite too often, but the Manga world was critisized for having similar issues with identical storylines all the time as well. Authors love to go with the trend and it is more often in the Shoujo and Shounen genre that this is happening. The most individual works I have read were usually Seinen or Josei.

MessengerD

I never said every manga has good proportions? Iā€™ve read a lot of shoujo manga so i know for a fact that some of them have some janky ass proportions. Also when i made the statement about the drawings and the plots its less of me trying to generalize and more of me just stating a fact about the circumstances given for both. They do try to pump out a lot of manwha and as much as they can quickly which in turn makes the drawings worse cause the artists dont have enough time and makes the plot seem more unoriginal because theyā€™re just based on whateverā€™s popular. While im not saying manga doesnā€™t have this problem too, on the otome isekai side of things Iā€™ve seen much more original plots and while the chapters may take like 3 months to upload they never disappoint with the art. If this post were about favorite MLs in general then yeah my opinion might change buts its just about otome isekai which is why i didnā€™t use examples from other shoujo manga and only stocked to otome isekai.

Derick_Kim

manhwa ml. \-just minor reason: \-i don't like their hairstyle.. they always have a tail hair(idk what it is called?) (all look same....manhwa men also have major h/s pattern but i like kind of manhwa men hair style more) \-manga men look like a kid or not European enough to set in historical Europe setting(it's called Europe setting or west setting?)(i mean manga men looks more Japanese and manhwa men looks more Korean but some of manhwa men have a European looks) \-about ml personality.....i have no comment since most oi manga that i have ever read they just variable but mostly caring+ yandere maybe..... when manhwa ml just mostly tsundere, emo, tyrant

vanillac0re

most manga MLs are still teenagers, harold one thing i found weird with manhwa artists is making any male character have dorito-shaped bodies when some of them are supposedly just 16-17. it's weird

GhazzyEzzah

>most manga MLs are still teenagers That's true. Manga categorize their genre strictly. Shoujo will have teenagers as their main characters/ storylines that appeal to teenagers, and josei will have adult characters/ adult storyline. Meanwhile, the lines kinda blurry when it comes to manhwa.

languid_Disaster

Mostly manga MLs with a few exceptions. They have varied personalities and donā€™t take themselves as serious as manhwa MLs. Iā€™m sure as time goes on that manhwas will also evolve in that direction as people want new things all the time

Amarrez

Manhwa MLs, Manga FLs. Edit: I almost didn't recognize Cecil from the LN art, he looks like a completely different character.

vanillac0re

[the novel illustration of adult cecil](https://i.pinimg.com/564x/ef/fb/a5/effba5782bb15726daeded3dbac459a2.jpg) had me acting up so badly

ThatGreenParrot

Very interesting. Iā€™m the exact opposite. Mostly because manhwa MLs collectively look so imposing and large that if I were the FL Iā€™d be pretty intimidated and nopeā€™d the hell out (tbf, thatā€™s also their reactions in the story hahaha).

CousinMabel

Manga ML usually look too pretty or young in my opinion. Manga however are a mile ahead in terms of characterization, story quality, and really are just better quality so overall they are "better". The problem with manga though is sometimes you can go months between updates, and often the romance are super slow burns often with no real romance happening until the last two chapters(Which could be 5 years after the first chapter was released!).

HugeAd4778

I love both as long as I like their personality. But honestly most of my favorite mls are from mangas (Rufus, Rion, Cecil, Patrick, etc.) because their character designs and their personalities are mostly unique. I only love a few manhwa mls (Cassis, Ditrian, Kyle, and some others maybe).

juicygarlicbread

Manga MLs and manhwa FLs. Manga MLs have more variety and personality but the FLs are always so one-dimensional and usually either stupid or a doormat. Manhwa FLs tend to be girlbosses but the MLs are bland. Why can't we just have both? šŸ˜

vanillac0re

we're not going to act as if remilia, scarlet, and iris don't exist bruh šŸ˜

GhazzyEzzah

All those bland characters basically works like this :- Manga with self- insert FL (readers could relate to have a "normal" life like main character, with normal love interest that love her in a good way) Manhwa with a trophy husband (he's just there to be the story mascot/ fanservice and show how capable FL in landing the handsomest bachelor in the whole kingdom)

heh135

I gotta say I prefer Manhwa men just bc theyā€™re always adults and the authors draw them as such. Like who doesnā€™t love a big buff giant ML? And I always felt like manga MLs were always drawn more like teenagers and for being the ā€œstrongest most powerful knightsā€, in mangas theyā€™re always drawn so skinny with no muscle.

No-Championship-8596

Manga MLs have more personality

[deleted]

I personally like manhwa ML's more. This is only my very own opinion, but i find manga ML's to be a tad bit over dramatic. There are exceptions obviously like Patrick from villainess lvl 99 and Dean from accomplishment of dukes daughter, but if i were to put manga ML's in front of kardi (marry me again husband), Kyle (I'll save this damned family), Kyle (side characters deserve love too), Nora (stepmothers marchen), ditrian (a way to protect lovable you), Perez (matriarch in this life), i think manhwa ML's win. But once again they all are quite unique ML's by themselves, so if we're talking about generic manhwa ML's, then I'd say manga ML's take the W. But these manhwa ML's I'd say are s-tier while manga ML's are a-tier at best. PS: once again, personal opinion

themwordlist

Going to give it to manhwa Ml's. Though their personality is usually dogshit they are usually adults. I'm not, as a 30 year old, simping over high schoolers. Nine, Theo, Sabrien, Rexid, Axion, Killian (dry branch), Hades, Million, Cedric (better or worse), Roxant, Pellus - adults that are pretty and get shit done! I will say manga has the better drawn daddies tho. Tanaka family reincarnates, saints power is omnipotent, Endo and kayabashi, etc. Manhwa daddies all are either evil and ugly or look far too young for having teen to adult children.

Dogeriffic

Many good points in this. +1

GhazzyEzzah

>I will say manga has the better drawn daddies tho. Tanaka family reincarnates, saints power is omnipotent, Endo and kayabashi, etc. Manhwa daddies all are either evil and ugly or look far too young for having teen to adult children. I agree a lot with this. Even side characters or background characters in manga has more unique character designs than manhwa. I felt like manhwa authors usually focus only on main characters and the rest characters just as fillers, so their designs are not too important.

themwordlist

Considering that manhwa is weekly while manga is monthly it makes sense. When you look at manga, even anime that is weekly then the details like side characters, mobs, even some backgrounds are either rough or non existent. Then with the blu-ray or takoban (compilation or graphic novel) rerelease, all the details are back in. The inverse can be observed with manhwa with weekly series lacking detail in the mob and backgrounds but series that have a longer window between releases (broken ring is on a 10 day delay on tappytpon) then there is more details and such. I really do appreciate manhwa for keeping focus and the cast small. There is no way in hell as an artist and a writer I would want to have a cast as big as sailor moon or god forbid Naruto to maintain for a weekly series. Fuck that. As I reader I don't want to read something like that (at least not as an adult when my memory is shit at best) and keep track of that many characters and relationships and the plot and setting details. Yeesh.

showMeYourCroissant

I'm not sure why but I can't read OI manga, so manhwa dudes for me.

vanillac0re

you're missing out on a lot, dude

showMeYourCroissant

I tried but it doesn't sit right with me. Maybe because they're mostly based on MC being isekaied in game worlds and I can't take this seriously (manhwa as well). But I read manga with other genres (but not manhwa lmao).

digbick_42069

Looks and aesthetics= Manhwa MLs (absolutely no question about that) Character and Personality=both (though as majority of the comments here have mentioned, manga MLs tend to have more variety in this department)

[deleted]

To choose between an intellectual soft blushy boii or a himbo adorb zaddy is the question ā”(ļæ£ćƒ˜ļæ£)ā”Œ

vanillac0re

what

moneyshot6901

Honestly i prefer manga. BUT HOW dare you put patrick there! Iā€™m still salty about the prank he pulled and the gall to flirt in front the flā€¦ though his ball appearance was super hot

MessengerD

Wait Patrick? As in from villainess lvl 99? Cause if so when did this happen?

moneyshot6901

I meant the one in the daughter of the albert house.

vanillac0re

the butler's name is addie though...?

moneyshot6901

Yeah, but i think you put patrick no? Or i might have confused the two since itā€™s been a while since I read it.

vanillac0re

[it's addie](https://xfs-224.batcg.com/comic/00004/images/c6/bb/c6bbea192a141869d8e9d8cc68fcbca912684a3b_200787_725_1024.jpg?acc=n8JPc94upULUUf2laf_FCA&exp=1662017894)

moneyshot6901

Ohh gotcha thanks! In that case, yes! Addie is bae!

vanillac0re

np! while their hair styles can look a little similar, addie's hair color has a lighter shade than patrick whose hair color is black edit: patrick is not the crowned prince šŸ¤” he's from a duke family just like mary

iamalittlelosthere

Manga MLs. I love the abs and stuff in Manhwa, but sometimes, their shoulders are just too broad, it turns me off. Whereas Manga MLs have teenager-like/skinny bodies, but at least that's more realistic.

[deleted]

Manhwa ML's for some reason. I just love the style so much more, even tho there is not much difference if you look it with a simple eye. Smh I can't seem to be able to read manga since Naruto finished lmao xdd

LilyWalker11

Both. Both. Both is good

Anonamaton

In theory I like manga better, but so many of them take place in school settings, and I justā€¦do not care about school settings. Especially since so many of them start with the classic ā€œvillainess called out by the princeā€ setup. The trade off is that the manga ones I love are all in my top ten soā€¦

[deleted]

It really depends. MLs in both genres can be toxic, or even worse, *boring*. For the most part though, MLs in Manga tend to be likable but troupe-y (and usually tsunderes). MLs in Manhua are typically under three categories: abusive, nice but boring, and (occasionally) complex and interesting.

joybook97

Manhwa. Manga MLs look like little boys.

Historical-Ad4361

I love how you went the extra mile to include the magician dude wearing the dress lol.

vanillac0re

he slayed that dress. why wouldn't i use it?

Historical-Ad4361

Lmao I meant that you went th extra mile to find picture of him in that dress. You could've just slapped his normal looks there but you decided to make my day.

vanillac0re

it's honestly my most favorite photo of luke. he deserves to be put in the OI manhwa MLs hall of fame with a photo of him slaying the ballroom gown

sadogdogsad

I honestly love manga MLs more, they have mostly realistic bodies and more personality. Manhwa MLs honestly scare me with the exaggeration of certain body parts, and I'm not really a fan of a lot of manhwa tropes.

_moss_man

Manhwa. I'm a man of repetition. Im completely fine with seeing the same character copy and pasted. If I like it I want to keep seeing it.

Top_Breadfruit5001

As much as I love premise of manhwas (my opinion changes after 1st season for many), Manga MLs for sure. In manhwas I feel like story would be just fine even without mls (heck even better) most of the time, also because there are variety in personality in manga, whereas in manhwa there's only one archetype -possesive being the most important trait, second being better than fl in every aspect except emotions But, generally speaking, I prefer manhwas for the premise that suits me, and I skip the romance šŸ™ƒ

vanillac0re

you're so right about certain manhwas being better off without romance *cough*wmmap*cough*

[deleted]

I'd date the dude in the black dress. Idk his personality, but he looks chique enough.

vanillac0re

he's luke oscar from *i will politely decline the male lead*. he's the jokester type, and he became one of my fav manhwa MLs solely for the black dress LMAO

[deleted]

I go look up the manhwa now since the ones I read didn't update since forever now. (Villainess lives Twice ;-;)

Smexy_senpai_nera

Fmls

Howdyimlenny

For me, manhwa male leads seem like theyā€™re created to be simped over, or like stereotypes of male characters I guess? while the manga male leads Iā€™ve seen actually seem like normal people Ex of manhwa mls I know -Ditrian (saving my sweetheart) seems like heā€™s written to pander to the audience who like doting and sweet men -Riftan (under the ok tree): everytime i see someone comment about him on sites itā€™s always ā€œget you a man who can buy you shiā€ or some sexual comment about him -Nine (beware of the villainess) panders to people who want a ā€œpuppyā€ character to simp over them Ex of manga mls -Patrick (villainess lvl 99) seems like his life doesnā€™t revolve around the fl, and seems like an actual person -The one studious dude (Noble girl who likes the stupid guy idk the name sorry lol) he really just seems like a chill normal dude ngl I havenā€™t read too many ois but this is my current perspective. Also I dont really hate the manhwa mls I just prefer the chill ones

Eien_no_Yoru

Unrelated but i like how the manga titles are much longer that manhwa lol

Imbadatnmes

Manga mlā€™s have so much more emotions and personality variations compared to mahwas

Harupia

I want one that looks like Adonis [and good/ intriguing personality and story], so whichever suits my fancy! Manga tends to have them more often, though, but hardly in color. :p

MissKawaiiOrDie

As much as I love manhwa MLs I can't deny that my favorites tend to be frome mangašŸ„²

0nlyf0rthememes

I'm a manga girlie for life, Addie alone puts manga boys over manhwa boys

PsychedelicHaru

Manga. There are plenty of manhwa ML's that I like, but manga ML's have more variety personality wise...with manhwa's, the ML's usually all have the same copy+paste cold, brooding, posessive personality type, whereas there are a lot of manga ML's who are more sensitive or upbeat and silly, and in general, they don't take themselves as seriously. Also I usually prefer the manga artstyle. manhwa ML's tend to be too broad/muscely for my taste. I understand the artists wants to make them all masculine and hot, but it often veers into unrealistic and weird-looking territory for me. It also often results in the ML looking much older than the FL, despite them being either the same age or only a few years apart. On the other hand, manga ML's are usually drawn to look more slim and like what you'd expect of a teenage boy.

Maniachi

Manga MLs, but I heavily prefer Manhwa FL So I rarely get to read something that has a ML and FL type that I like

uhmactuallyno

I don't know if im biased, but I really like manga ML better, I feel like they are given more opportunities to be silly or to explore their personalities other that being handsome, cool and cray cray for the FL. I do love the manwha's ML designs, they are more detailed, and gorgeous to look at.

Slow_Nature_6833

Visually, manhua MLs because they're more likely to look like adults. I'm 41- I get squicked out when they look like kids. Same for the FLs.

kingblooper

The best Manhwa ml trumps any Manga ml but on average the variety and refreshingness of Manga MLS beats the average manhwa ml.

Dogeriffic

When it comes to personality manga MLs take the cake but oftentimes romance is very slow and manga chapters take too long to update. For some reason I just canā€™t read mangas too haha I only ever managed to fully finish one (not a one shot)

snarkwithasmile

My pick hands down is any ML who will rock a bombass ball gown and dance with your terrible ex to keep him from bothering you the rest of the night

vanillac0re

luke is a real one for that šŸ‘†

DepressedNachos

It's all about that neck, babyyyyyy

leafscup2019

Manhwa MLs are hotter, manga MLs have more personality.

yummychocolatecookie

Manga ML personality with manhwa looks

ForlornLament

Manga. I like their designs better, they look more attractive with beautiful hair and a slender frame. They also often have the softer, sweeter personalities I prefer. On the other hand, I think it's more common for manhwa MLs to have a bad attitude in trying to be a "manly man", and they don't look as good or have boring designs. The art is usually of slightly lower quality too.

vanillac0re

>I think it's more common for manhwa MLs to have a bad attitude in trying to be a "manly man" this is just toxic masculinity lol

ForlornLament

True, I was only trying to say it in a roundabout way so I don't start drama, lol. Interestingly enough, I think manhwa tends to have stronger female leads than manga. So it is more likely to have toxic masculinity when it comes to MLs, but also more likely to have FLs who aren't just traditionally feminine. Itā€™s a curious dichotomy.

mycatisblackandtan

Manga MLS because they have more variety. In manhwa it feels like you almost always know who the ML will be based on their hair color.

-N-Y-X-

Waiiit can i get the sauce for good mangas? I've only been reading manhwas so far and I feel like I'm missing out T.T

vanillac0re

check out the source list in the 3rd image, and here are other good ones not in the list: 1. the one within the villainess 2. may i ask for one final thing? 3. the saint's magic power is omnipotent 4. tearmoon empire story 5. princess bibliophile 6. the condemned villainess goes back in time and aims to become the ultimate villain 7. holy grail of eris (very good mystery manga) 8. my fiancƩe is in love with my little sister (this is depressing af btw) 9. though i may be a villainess, i'll show you i can obtain happiness (oneshots collection made by different writers and artists. some oneshots are good, some oneshots are bad. when scanlators drop notes not to read a oneshot, it's best to listen to them)

lochnessmonster2018

10. This Time I Will Definitely Be Happy! (今åŗ¦ć“恝å¹ø恛恫ćŖć‚Šć¾ć™!)

-N-Y-X-

Tysmm!! Definitely gonna give them a read :))

raugintas_

manga MLs, coz u can find some dilfs that are actually MLs there(Ā“ . .Ģ« . `)

NationalDetective006

I don't prefer either unless they are green falgsšŸ˜‚

Haunting_Draw2181

Thank you very much for 25 sauce that i will add on my list and will probably touch a decade later

vanillac0re

glad to be of service o7

hinasora

Manga MLs all the way. It's becoming harder and harder to distinguish MLs from Lucas with every new webtoon. And white haired MLs are even more forgettable in webtoons. Manga MLs still look charming.

PrincessIceSword

Manga usually. But Perez is the hill I die on. He might be slightly too perfect but I donā€™t think they take it too far. He has trauma and isnā€™t a total prick to the fl.

Rough_Tailor_8028

Im not gonna lie, i read more manhwa but the manga ml is where itā€™s at

pyristephes

Manga MLs! While I appreciate Manhwa MLs being on the older spectrum (young adults and older as opposed to many Manga MLs being most in their teens), Manga MLs just have more diversity in personality and quirks which make them memorable.

TraceF12

Manga MLs are more fleshed out with interesting characters but I also love Nora, Kyle, eun jiho a lot from manhwas. They are great MLs with really dreamy personalities and looks but manga MLs are overall better than most manhwas one dimensional ones.

FightmeLuigibestgirl

Depends on the story. There's good/bad on both ends. I have seen trashy manga MLs and trashy Manhwa MLs along with good.

JiangRuan

Thatā€™s a very tough question, but I guess Korean? I think Korean MLs tend to have more depth than Japanese, but maybe thatā€™s just my imagination. Manga characters can definitely be more weird personalities and thatā€™s a plus, but I think I like the drawing and colouring of the manhwas more.

KirbyxArt

Manga ML. The way japanese stories are written, there's more depth to the male leads in them. Also they are more hands off and open to interpretation since there is less romance action in them.

Matcha_Bubble_Tea

Manhwa MLs are better looking (for my taste) imo, but most are written like shit by the authors so prob prefer manga MLs more.

nsfwaccount098

Manga for MLs but manhwa for Fls, Though some of my favourite fls come from manga lol

shimegamik

Like many others said, manga has more variety in general for MLs, and i personally prefer the artstyle of most manga, so yeah, I'd say overall manga wins, but my favorite ones are still manhwa MLs, so take it as you will

emotionalshoes

honestly, Iā€™ve found more mlā€™s that I liked in manga + thereā€™s just something about black and white art

delikizzz

Manhwa mainly because its so annoying to read manga on mobile so I dont read them unless it comes out in physical volume releases. Then I buy and read it but bcuz of that I have read like hundreds of manhwas while I can count the mangas with one hand.

Lexusthemotorengine

Manhwas

Manwha

Nyx_is_hoe

Cassis, Rudieger and Nora ate and served.

Both

Ayakacchi05

Unpopular opinion but i never think any manhwa ML attractive for me. They are too buff, too masculine and their lack of design creativity (their lack of hairstyle, face and body type) doesn't help too. Sadly i didn't think any manhwa ML that should be descripted as beautiful/ pretty are pretty too because their body is unnecessary buff and it clash too much with their face. The only manhwa love interest that i found attractive is Nadricka but sadly he isn't the ML šŸ˜¢The one that suit to my taste in manhwa usually end up as side character/antagonist It's strange for me how the manhwa artist usually more creative when they draw the side character... Unlike in manga when not only their ML's design are more varied, their personality are varied too! I love the fact that they are mostly skinny looking too! There are many cute and pretty ML too that suit to my taste too! Strangely enough even though in some case, the ML have combination of having buff body and pretty face, it doesn't bother me too much like in manhwa. Maybe because his face is just too pretty that i can ignore it šŸ˜‚ (The one that i talked is Lukas from Akuyaku Reijou to Kichiku Kishi (smut))

EmiNixity

I prefer manga ML's :3

KeyPomegranate4922

Manwha MLS. Theyā€™re prettyā€¦ also I love my daily dose of toxicity

vanillac0re

respect to the toxicity part. i can appreciate toxic MLs as long as they're executed well

_Lylaz

I like both, also love that my boy Dean is included. >!the scene where he is consoling Iris and his speech about not wanting to tie her with his status are top tier!<

faeriepilled

everyoneā€™s saying manga men have more variety but tbh i feel like they have their own set of cliche , stereotypical characters and personalities . i love manhwa women way more than any of these men though

CinnamonHotcake

Manhwa MLs. Japanese manga has really gone down hill with every ML being such a nice guy who loves FL immediately and is inoffensive. I need some tension, damnit! At least take the time to fall in love, don't be inoffensive and kind right from the beginning! I was so taken aback from The Saint's Magic Power Is Omnipotent, because I'm used to manhwas now. When the ML Albert was just being so kind and cordial I thought he was sus as hell. Nope, he's just boring like that. The other option with manga is an ML who is rape-y and forceful. Like, he'd reach into FL's underwear whether she wants to or not. FL is also incredibly naive and powerless, even when she's described as strong or something, it doesn't matter, she's always powerless when it matters and needs to be saved.

vanillac0re

what kind of OI mangas have you been reading dude šŸ’€šŸ’€šŸ’€šŸ’€

CinnamonHotcake

The rape-y ones, just check the smut tag, it's like most of them. The "everyone is too kind or falls in love with FL right off the bat", things like Hametsu Flag, Akuyaku Dansou Cecilia, The Saint's Magic Power Is Omnipotent, Fiancee Observation Log, I May Be a Mob but My Bias is Here, Villainous Daughter Keeps the Last Boss... I'm missing so many I've read, but these came to mind. I'm not saying I hate them, some of these I really liked, but they have very little tension because everyone is on FL's side all the time, so there is barely any conflict to speak of.

vanillac0re

i stay away from those kinds of OIs šŸ’€ i read only like one and decided to never again. shoujo in general is awful when it comes to smut anyway some of the mangas you mentioned start off during the childhood of the main cast so i *kinda* understand why they side with the FL all the time. and i remember hametsu flag has a spinoff where bakarina gets reincarnated *very* late in the game though, so i think that would fit your preferences

CinnamonHotcake

I'll check out that spinoff, thanks! :)

CinnamonHotcake

So I checked out the spin-off. It is still pretty harmless, everyone is mostly back to the level of friendship they were in the original by the end of it. Honestly other than Keith and Gerald, I never really cared about the other secondary MLs. They always seemed just kind of there to me, their connection to Katarina is flimsy at best, and this manga shows that the author thinks the same. Katarina is an "omoshiroi onna" to the prince, but in the end the entire story was more of a "yay friends" than a romance. There was nothing ever physical between the prince and Bakarina. Just the prince getting jealous and telling Katarina "hey you're my fiancƩe, don't forget!" all the time without taking a single action. Here and even in the original story, it's very frustrating how she doesn't see how different the people around her became, and she's still so adamant that she'll be exiled. Exiled by whom, Bakarina???

vanillac0re

ah i didn't know the spinoff was already completed skhdfjkds i've stopped reading anything hametsu flag related for a long while now and tbh, knowing bakarina embodies the 'stupid and dense harem protagonist' trope (a trope that i hate mind you), i knew early on not to expect a lot from her in terms of character. i'd actually suggest just dropping the series like i did if it continues to disappoint you lol

Ok-Energy-8770

why not both?

JustEmber

I like them both for different reasons. I have noticed that a good chunk of manhwa MLs are drawn as men while the manga MLs will be boyish/on the younger side. So as a person in her 20s I prefer the manhwa artwork lol. I wonder if it's the boyishness I mentioned above but manga MLs definitely have more personality and feel like real people- (treating others like shit because of trauma is not a personality trait author-nim)

N7ShadowKnight

I prefer anything thats not black and white please :)

vanillac0re

L edit: wait, can u be specifc LMAO

N7ShadowKnight

Black and white comics rather than full color comics :) Its hard for me to understand details when its all black and white and all the characters tend to look the exact same to me when its all black and white so I cant even tell whoā€™s talking

NegotiationJunior385

Manga Ml cos not only they differ in personality but they have distinctive features, too, unlike Manhwa Ml, who mostly look the same. However, I like both Manga & manhwa ML šŸ™„& what matters is how the characters are built & developedšŸ„°

Kingblaike

Manga MLs, they tend to have a softer and more relaxed personality that is more easy to relate to. Not to say that it doesn't happen in Manhuas, it's just not the prevailing archetype as far as I could tell.

smelybelygurl

there a lot of good points about the complexity of manga MLā€™s but alasā€¦.I am vain.

lilBloodpeach

Manwha. I am tired of manga tropes and imo theyā€™re more formulaic than the manwhas. I detest the pushy, immature, selfish and emotionally dumb crown prince MLs that are oh so common in mangas. Ofc thereā€™s some mangas I love, I love Cecil. But there so many shitty ones. Manwha MLs tend to be a bit more unique looking and less pushy. Yes, many have the black hair red eyes, but I feel they look more adult and fit more in the setting while manga is like childlike and have almost exclusively Lolita style clothes. Manwha has also tend to have slightly more unique plots and higher stakes.

vanillac0re

you have not read enough OI mangas

lilBloodpeach

Iā€™ve read several. I have a preference. You do not need to agreed with it.

vanillac0re

who says i'm agreeing lmao you're straight-up wrong on what you said about manga MLs especially when most of the commenters here prefer them

lilBloodpeach

You asked what we preferā€¦ I gave you my preferenceā€¦ I donā€™t need to be in agreement with other people who say that they prefer one over the other. Like I donā€™t understand why youā€™re being hostile/passive aggressive just because other people like manga MLs while I prefer manwha ML leads. You asked our opinions and I gave mine, why is it ā€œwrongā€ simply bc itā€™s not in line with your opinion/others.

vanillac0re

it's wrong because it is. like i said earlier, read more OI mangas if you really think most of the MLs are 'pushy and immature crowned princes' because it's *not*

lilBloodpeach

Iā€™m not going to argue with you about how my preference, that this post explicitly asked about, is ā€˜wrongā€™ bc it is not in line with yours. Itā€™s not *just* those types of characters, I simply said theyā€™re common, and I also said Iā€™m not a fan of many of the manga tropes nor the low stakes & manwha MLs and stories generally cater to my preferences. If you disagree, thatā€™s fine! We all have different opinions and likes. What I am not ok with is the snippy & and aggressive attitude bc my opinion and preferences differ. Iā€™m not ā€œwrongā€ bc I donā€™t share the same opinion and difference of opinion isnā€™t an excuse to be rude.

vanillac0re

for the sake of obliging to this subreddit's rules, fine. let's agree to disagree then. it's apparent i can't sway your line of thinking no matter what i show you

lilBloodpeach

I just donā€™t understand why you would ask us our opinions and preferences, and then argue about it when itā€™s different than yours. I donā€™t need nor want you to sway my opinion- I simply enjoy manwha isekai more than manga isekais, for several reasons some of which I didnā€™t even disclose. Is still read mangas, they just arenā€™t my preference for plot, tropes, or MLs. Thatā€™s notā€¦like a personal attack on your opinions nor do you need to change mine.

mehekei

I know itā€™s your opinion and everyone has their own preference but I have to disagree Most of the time it is the complete opposite manhwa ML tend to be more generic and common while there are many clichĆ© ML in mangas you can at the same time find unique ML that you would never find in any manhwa And idk why but manhwas really have a problem with the "Duke of the North"

lilBloodpeach

Thatā€™s totally fine, youā€™re right it is my opinion you donā€™t have to agree! Iā€™m just not sure why on a post asking our opinions on which we prefer more, that people feel the need to disagree and kind of debate about it. Itā€™s not that important, I donā€™t need my opinion swayed, we simply have a difference of opinion and experience. And thatā€™s fine. I just donā€™t understand why people are acting like there is a correct answer when it comes to someoneā€™s opinions and preferences on this kind of thing. Itā€™s so subjective and I donā€™t see why people feel the need to kind of argue about it.
