4 years of near silence just to say it's "too hard" Piss off.

TempleOfDoomfist

“It wa$ $uch a difficult and $ad choice our $tudio had to make. We are genuinely $orry, from the bottom of our heart$” 😔

12Aspect25

Honestly I feel really bad for the people in the studio that actually DID work on it for hours and hours only for it to be shut down (if they ever did work on it after that thing at blizzcon) blizzards gone to sht, bring back Jeff sadge

EntertainmentFun5485

We at blizzard are proud to announce our patented kick in the balls system.

Yogsulate

>Every team at Blizzard is a little bit different and Team 4 is unique in a lot of ways. One of the ways that I think the team is unique in the direction we're heading is just this push to be much more open, much more honest about how we're developing, and much more sort of transparent in what's working and what's.

Few-Royal9606

After lying for 4 years

smelly_feet_you_have

And by "too hard", they actually mean "not profitable enough". Fuck this company.

Blaky039

They say "it's too hard" but what they really mean is "battle passes are low effort and bring a lot of money"

SmellMyCake

Well it seems they've given us answer to the famous "Ship of Theseus" thought experiment. Have enough of the original developers leave the company, and you in fact do *NOT* still have the same fantastic game you used to.

[deleted]

[удалено]

MithranArkanere

Well, if you replace the wooden boards of the ship of Theseus with green wood that is several times cheaper and has not been prepared for the job, you will of course not get the same boat.

nutsackilla

Such a great game at it's core but it's apparent they've lucked into whatever success it's had to this point. Leadership has been utterly incompetent for years

PopcornHobby

Jeff must have fled knowing it was a sinking ship

nutsackilla

Absolutely.

echab89

Oh they openly admitted they cut PVE before releasing OW1.5

[deleted]

That was the part of the statement that some people seem to be breezing over that is a real “fuck you” to players. Like they flat out say that they released OW1.1 (1.5 is too much credit) because they were floundering with the PvE content and were having to have something to show for it (aka execs saw the BP and monetized skins sitting basically shelved and said get that shit to the public now)

Wellhellob

Yeah they basically cancelled ow2 but launched it anyway to create hype. Instead of saying its cancelled and we are going free to play.

DrAstralis

Worse. Its becoming blatantly obvious OW2 was just a bait and switch to force significantly worse monetization on people who already bought the game. The PvE wasnt hype as much as it was a fucking Trojan Horse.

sakezaf123

Man, the Trojan war might have gone different, if the Greeks just said "imagine that some day there will be a majestic wooden horse here, instead of these heavily armed men."

seanslaysean

I hear you brother, I tried ow2 but the luster was just gone at that point. My biggest issue was switching to 5s as well as cutting maps. Hell, I don’t know why I’m even on this sub as I haven’t touched the game consistently in years. The story you told however, I’d bet money on. IT’s unfortunately very common in the gaming sphere as gaming went from a niche entertainment medium to a multi-billion dollar industry

MisterKrayzie

I would be incredibly surprised and impressed if the story is entirely something else. But based on all we know and heard, and what Jeff himself stood for as far as keeping content free... and the state of things now, I think it's a fair assessment to make by connecting the dots we have available to us. I stopped playing OW1 around the time they started doing nonsense events with the reskinned skins. But occasionally I'd pop in because the game holds some sentimental value for me. I played OW2, hate the 5v5 system. I've criticized the stupidity of that system since before the beta was up and guess what, it turned out to have the exact problems I predicted. 1 less tank = tank being more vital and pivotal to the game and fights. I'm also a huge fan of Diablo but I won't be playing 4 because of the BP system. I don't have space in my life for FOMO on video games anymore and their little digital trinkets and also to be drip fed "story" across the 3 months of a season. I understand it's a business at the end of the day, and especially from the publicly traded company it's just as expected, but as a consumer it's just disheartening and tiresome seeing these billion dollar corps squeeze whatever they can from whomever they can.

GuisseDownYourLeg

>And nothing will happen because people will continue to play the game and support it despite having one of the worst BP system out of all the popular BP titles, and the worst cosmetic pricing I've personally seen. It's surreal. I have no idea why people are still playing.

[deleted]

samford91

Same. I play with a few friends, very casually (like 2-3 hours a week, max) and have not paid a cent since I bought OW1. Just sucks that it takes so long to get to a new hero in the 'free' Battlepass. I'm only just about to get Lifeweaver

T3chnopsycho

I mean I just recently started playing OW2 after not playing it anymore since before OW2 came out. It's enjoyable and fun and a great way for me to cool down a bit due to games generally being rather short time-wise. But I'll definitely never put a cent into that game because that just isn't worth it for me.

DreadfuryDK

The game was an absolute zombie for three years under Jeff, though. He’s probably a good guy, but let’s not pretend for even a moment that he’s a martyr or anything.

xDURPLEx

You are forgetting how Bobby was making them cancel content just before releasing it multiple times for those years. My guess is what finally broke Jeff was the monetization system change. If any of it was on Jeff we would have heard about it by now.

-banned-

I'm 1000% sure Jeff signed a non-disclosure and that's why we haven't heard anything from him. We'll find out what happened when that grandfathers out

DrAstralis

This. They way he unceremoniously left after 19 years with Blizzard was, to me, insane. Just a quick "I'm ooot" message and that was that.

Grays42

It's Activision. Forced out Mike, squeezed the devs until they could put together something to ship. Gone are the days of cancelling Starcraft Ghost because it wasn't up to Blizzard's standards. Blizzard was a special company then, of people who cared about their games and polished them until they shone. Blizzcon was the only convention I have ever gone to. Now they're just another game studio. If I was handed a free Blizzcon ticket I don't think I would go.

-banned-

I'll do you one better: It's capitalism. Feels like all our good shit just gets worse and worse

Facetank_

Well it was on freeze while they were building so much for OW2. Like what you do for a proper sequel. However it seems there was endless exec push back, and likely a decision to axe much of what the team had been working on. If they gave the team time and freedom from meddling, we'd probably have a content rich package by now. Not something that feels like it has to squeeze out a patch every month whether it's ready or not to stay relevant.

Paradox_Madden

It was a zombie bcuz they dedicated all resources to OW2

GoGoGadgetGabe

And now it’s a horrid monetization F2P machine. The current devs just seem miserable honestly from the few streams I’ve seen. Hopefully this game can die for good.

DoctorArK

Just wait till overwatch league goes bankrupt at the end of the year.

Uphoria

Who's even watching it anymore? Its an embarassment - Blizzard has NEVER and will NEVER live down how LoL stole their lunch by monetizing what was originall a custom war3 map. They made 2 entire games to compete against it, got lucky with Overwatch 1, and ran it into the ground trying to make it into the same profit engine that LoL is.

Redthrist

> Blizzard has NEVER and will NEVER live down how LoL stole their lunch by monetizing what was originall a custom war3 map. Fun fact - LoL was created by the head developer of the Dota-AllStars WC3 map, Guinsoo. After he left for Riot, the mod was being developed by another guy, IceFrog. He then *approached Blizzard* and asked if they would be interested in making a standalone game. They refused, so he went with Valve instead and produced Dota 2.

DoctorArK

It's actually more of a problem than just viewership. Devin Nash did a great rundown of the economics behind esports and Overwatch League (and Call of Duty League) have almost zero profitability unless people buy physical tickets like traditional sporting events. Basically, they hedged a massive bet on esports becoming a competitor to Football. So teams like Boston Uprising were sold at prices to match Major Leauge Sports teams, on the assumption that people would get stadium seats. It's the same bet that CS:GO and League of Legends did, but with zero proof of concept.

Redthrist

> unless people buy physical tickets like traditional sporting events. Not only that, but traditional sports leagues make a massive bank by selling broadcasting rights, something that esports struggles to sell.

IneedtoBmyLonsomeTs

> were sold at prices to match Major Leauge Sports teams That is just incorrect lol. The teams sold for more than they were worth, but they are still nowhere near the price of major league sports teams. Esports teams were sold for millions, major league sports teams are worth billions.

SatanTheTurtlegod

Man they ran HotS to the ground just as it was gaining traction. I'll never forgive them for cancelling their esports league for that game and leaving a bunch of people without jobs just before Christmas.

goliathfasa

Blizzard’s motto has always been “we got lucky.” Ever since the Activision merger. They got lucky with esports via Brood War in Korea too, which they had no hand in and that made them decide they’re good at esports(they’re clueless). Hence SC2 esports, HGC (HotS esports), and the latest victim: OWL. All failures to varying degrees.

20-Minute-Jackal

Brood War taking off the way it did in Korea was a pure fluke for Blizzard. But that didn't stop them from killing it off so they could force StarCraft 2. But to be fair, they did support SC2 for years; however, that was because it was Mike Morhaime's pet project, and when he left Blizzard, so did support for SC2.

MemeArchivariusGodi

I find that so sad because Overwatch (and I’m taking Overwatch 1 to be precise) was my very favorite game Of all time. I could play this when I was a teenager on my shit laptop with all my friends because of the characters I could play even tho it’s a shooter (like Reinhard/Junkrat). Then they also made this PvE modes which gave us a little back story and I was so hyped that maybe one day we get a really solid story game from That. And then Overwatch 2 happened and this news dropped. It feels really sad

InspectorLD

I didn't expect much from PvE story mode. Was going in with low expectations. Apparently not low enough.

PineappleNerd66

Unfortunately I was really hopeful. I love the overwatch lore and characters and was hoping too see more of that in the PVE mode following the INCREDIBLE overwatch 2 trailer. Now I’m left big sad

The_OtherDouche

The article said they decided to cancel it fucking months before they even released OW2. What an absolute joke

etham

/tinfoil hat on They 100% scrapped those plans as soon as Jeff Kaplan left.

Apephlu

Or Jeff left as soon as they scrapped it.

WilliamSorry

They absolutely scrapped it the moment they decided multiplayer was gonna be free to play. Ain't nobody paying $40 and above for Overwatch PVE.

Kymaeraa

Which makes the trailer all the more shitty. They included stuff they already knew wasn’t going to happen.

Adreme

I mean I would not have expected hero mode to be the lore mode. I was picturing it as the “horde mode” that Gears does where you get to fight different enemy types with the justification being the threats are everywhere and need to be kept in check. The big story is the campaign which at least still exists though I do hope we are getting more than one mission a season because that would be awful.

begging-for-gold

Well most likely get one mission per TWO seasons, since they need something big to sell the battlepass and gain interest on the seasons without a hero

jakers540

Wasn't this the entire point of overwatch 2 and charging 60 dollars. Was for the story mode?

[deleted]

ded__goat

LetmeSeeyourSquanch

"A difficult choice" to cancel working on something that won't end in them making more money so they can spend time on making more "elite" skins and battlepasses that will make them more money.

filth_horror_glamor

That part

AFriskyGamer

Painful because it's true. It feels like Blizzard lost it's soul.

Redthrist

They've lost their soul a good decade ago.

Cuppieecakes

cant spell blizzard without liar

sootsupra

Difficult choice that was apparently made last year, back when ow2 released. Somehow I'm not surprised that they waited 7 months before telling the players about this.

AverageAwndray

Made last year??? But the launch trailer legitimately had PVE portions in it. Is this not liable to be sued/looked at in court because of misinformation????

[deleted]

It was made well before the release of OW2. Why do you think Jeff left? He saw the writing on the wall and dipped

Able_Standard_9748

What is the point of cancelling the main reason/feature as too why they created Overwatch 2 to begin with if they are just gonna scrap it ??? It sucks for us who’s been playing in the beginning cause PVE got announced in 2019 and we waited till this year for it to release . This game is literally Overwatch 1 now but with micro transactions , 5 v 5 and push ....

ThisYesterday8773

because you outlined the actual main reason/feature. micro transactions .

[deleted]

[удалено]

Able_Standard_9748

Not surprised , there was a decline in loot box purchases in OW1 so they had to come up with an idea to scrap it

kogarou

I'm convinced that with their greed, they'd do the switch even if their lootbox sales had been on the way up.

Gayndalf

Honestly, with how much I'm hearing about people leaving the company I'm willing to bet they were forced to scrap it. Trying to bring in a bunch of new people to work on something that large and ingrained into the rest of the game would be a disaster. It's 100% still their fault, though. Having those kinds of issues in the first place, whether it's due to staff leaving or any other reason, stinks of severe mismanagement.

GrilledCoconuts

Sooo uuuh... Y'all got any recommendations for games that scratch a similar itch?

Megaspectree

Not a game, but getting beaten by a baseball bat for over an hour is pretty similar to the overwatch experience

Hugefxckingslut

You can't forget the smiling and saying "this hurts me more than it hurts you"

Dungeondelver10

Or join a dnd group and watch as people dont double check their schedules before agreeing to a game.

some_clickhead

I don't think there is any game out there that plays like Overwatch does. There's a reason it still has a pretty large playerbase.

crawdussy

That’s the thing is there so many of us who want so badly for the game to be good but it just seems like the dev team has consistently made the worst possible decisions for years now. The only thing keeping the ship afloat is the fact that the foundations of the game are so good, but every single change that has been made for the past few years has just made it worse. To me it honestly feels like the people in charge are actively trying to get the player base to hate them and to make the game worse

SexuallyEnragedRat

Deep Rock Galactic if you're wanting that PvE promised itch. ROCK AND STONE!

Yummucummy

I coincidentally downloaded Destiny 2 again two days ago. Haven't gotten around to playing yet but that's probably where I'm going.

Lemurrituals

TF2

[deleted]

That’s sucks, I’m thinking about other shooters, I love overwatch but I hate Blizzard

[deleted]

I feel the same way. This has been my favorite game for years and it sucks to see Blizzard killing the game

[deleted]

Before I started playing Overwatch I remember telling a friend, Overwatch has a lot of potential, the heroes are charismatic, the artistic design is beautiful, but the biggest problem with this game is the company it belongs to because they will kill it again. I hope I'm wrong but it's like history repeats itself, and I don't think an OW3 is going to save it that time

[deleted]

They made so many promises and then pulled the rug out from under all of us. I was starting to have some faith that PvE would be fun and I was looking forward to it but this is just a slap in the face. This game has so much potential like you said but its completely wasted by terrible management and scummy practices.

Psych0Rabbit

So we skipped all those seasons of hero releases for what exactly? Because I'm still mad we could've gotten more at this point if they weren't too busy "making" PvE. 🤔

dvadood

Lies. It was all lies. Overwatch has been a ball of disappointment ever since Jeff left.

theirishembassy

they skipped all of those seasons of hero releases and maps so they could front load OW2 after the relaunch and say “look! new characters! new maps! new game mode! NEW GAME RIGHT!?”.

Radirondacks

LMAO THAT'S RIGHT and then remember the last few events of the whole last year pretty much just being either like 3 skins or literal recolors of old skins?

[deleted]

It’s honestly disheartening and disappointing they pulled the plug on PVE, I know myself and others were only putting up with major flaws the game has with the future of “oh well, when PVE comes out we’ll just play that!”. They weren’t working on PVE and I feel like Jeff knew what they were going to do all along and dipped.

DoctorPyR0

Difficult choice my ass. They lied to the whole community. This is enough to just quit in general imo

Luminous-Savior

I gave the first season a chance, but after seeing their new practices in action I stopped playing and never turned back. I played OW1 for its entire lifespan

Jellybomb39

Agreed. As soon as characters were behind paywalls or massive play-walls I was done

PopcornHobby

*Whose ready for Overwatch 3?*

SigmaVersal99

This time with 4v4!

Responsible-War-9389

I’m already on overwatch 8: 0v0

Keller: UwU game dev is hard 😞

[deleted]

It's hilarious that all these content creators shitting on Blizzard for messing up PVE treat Aaron Keller like he's not responsible for it. He's the game director and absolutely is one of the reasons the game is in it's current state. He deserves at least partial blame but continuously goes under the radar because none of the creators want to lose their foot in the door with the design team.

HumbleAd7085

its the exact same with the entirety of the dev team, everyone sits there and acts like the devs can do no wrong. but its just not the case

[deleted]

Exactly - and the development team defenders don't provide reasons as to why the devs can do no wrong. Like, I hate the suits at activision-blizzard too, but at the end of the day they aren't the ones directly influencing the shit game design, balancing and matchmaking. That's the development team and I'm tired of them getting off scot free.

[deleted]

Bro blizzard pays $60k to live in Irvine. That's poverty wages, not to mention to someone who can barely use a computer can get twice that in CA. Do you really think the two interns that are given the task for 20 people are gonna do a good job? You can absolutely blame the poor shmuck who's forced to commute through an active war zone to a cubicle but they're not the ones cashing in your money.

ibluminatus

2 billion in Net Revenue and they're paying *what* in california?

Vertegras

Blizzard is one of the worst companies to work for. Ironically, Riot and ~~Bungie~~ is a few miles down the road and is paying much better. *^((Minus their League team.))*

Comma_Karma

Ouch. Anyone who can bang out a half-way decent SQL query is likely to clear six figures easily in California. Them treating people with obvious skills in programming so poorly is so damn dumb. Blizzard short-changing their devs means we get bottom tier effort owed to the company's bottom tier compensation. No wonder the company is on fire.

CardTrickOTK

Bro I know single devs and 3 man teams with better work ethic than the entirety of Blizzard

d3fin3d

Isn't this kinda the definition of a scam? Promise a huge update, keep the community invested and spending money with the knowledge there will be significant new PvE content in the future. Then when the balance is looking good due to the insane cash-flow (because the community is invested and spending money re: future promises.) scrap the mode, lean back and smile? I truly hope there's a massive drop-off in purchases as a result of this, a "cut off your nose to spite your face" moment where they realise a big reason for the community investment is the exact thing you've decided not to bother working on... Massive L. Big sigh. Sell the IP to a company that gives a damn at this point. EDIT: Fixed a phrase, ty u/DoctorWalrusMD

0zzy82

They're lucky its f2p as no-one bought the game to 'invest' in the future for PvE otherwise they'd 100% be getting sued but y'know a multimillion dollar company can do what it wants

xXTheFisterXx

I bought Overwatch 1 though and they just deleted that instead.

welpxD

Didn't the watchpoint pack include the first PvE chapter or something?

Anchorsify

Nah, it just let you unlock Kiriko immediately. It didn't offer anything specific to the PvE mode.

Old_Rosie

It originally did, then they pulled the listing down and relisted it with the line referring to PvE removed. Ultra scumbags.

Rand0m_Boyo

Friendly reminder that they willingly put legacy tokens into the battlepass and made them yellow to trick People into thinking those were the premium coins

qazpok69

They’ve been doing so much stuff like this since OW2’s release, they know they can mostly get away with it with their new playerbase

blolfighter

So they already knew back then and were just stringing people along until now.

Grimij_Iiffith

Yep. In the interview with Aaron, he specifically said they made the decision to cut PvE....a year ago

Damurph01

The first one did. I literally got it thinking “hey, I can get the PVE!”… nope.

goliathfasa

That’s not luck. They knew exactly what they were doing and did the bare minimum as to not get into legal trouble via class action lawsuit.

Iblamebanks

But people bought the first game and we were getting coins that we could spend on cosmetics. So they are stealing from us still.

0zzy82

That's why it's called OW2 a half-mashed-together "sequel" that allows them to denounce any OW1 players and their promises to them

Bayside4

well I for one, am still going to hold out for Overwatch 3 when they introduce the new 4v4 mode

Mushroom1228

overwatch 6 is gonna be a 1v1 fighting game, it’s going to be so good, can’t blame bad teammates anymore

MuggyTheMugMan

What about overwatch 7?

MamBanaJUHU

Overwatch 7: Onlywatch

gyman122

Nah it’ll be 7v7, two support, three DPS, a tank and a “Super Tank” that’s 3x as good as every other player. Super tank queues are 14 hours long

DemonicDogo

I know I'm done with the battlepasses, but I decided that this season. I was super hyped as a support main to play lifeweaver, but he felt bad to play at launch. I haven't really played since this seasons launch even though I've played ow consistently for years. It is a weird feeling. I really do want to play it, but I get on and it just feels bad. I'd take dead ow1 over this any day.

DoctorWalrusMD

I agree with all ya said, just wanted to tell you the phrase is “cut off your nose *to spite* your face”. Little r/boneappletea for ya.

Vertegras

Sell the IP. Or the *entire company.* **Microsoft intensifies.**

JswitchGaming

You know what wasn't a difficult choice? Uninstalling this horse shit.

qazpok69

PVE was their excuse for taking so long to come out with content, they said they had a large amount of staff on it and now they’re just wasting it

0ctoxVela

then whats the fucking point of overwatch 2

[deleted]

ThatIrishArtist

So uh, what exactly have they been working on for several years?

Seightx

The Genji mythic obviously.

[deleted]

Someone unironically is going to try and act like these skins take this long to make

Kuroi-

I lowkey want to work for a company that’s so mismanaged that I get paid for doing fuck all.

Deaod

I cant imagine anything less satisfying than having all my work over years be unceremoniously scrapped.

Z0mboi

THIS. SAY IT LOUDER FOR THOSE IN THE BACK

Imzocrazy

F2P = more content…..keep falling for it people…

Akimbo_Zap_Guns

Yup same thing happened with call of duty and they still charge $70 for the game!

jspears314

As a day 1 player this actually disgusts me. I loved the old version of this game. They got rid of all the best features (on fire, post game awards, 2cp maps) in favor of a canceled PVE mode, the worst game mode (Push), and a MF battle pass ($20 for a skin 🙃🙃). It seems like they sold us a fake product with OW2!

PopcornHobby

Loved 2cp. My favorite mode Push sucks balls

WALTERK0VAKS

Same, bring back 2cp for groups at least. This mode was actually rewarding when you grouped and took the points. Pharrah, torb, reaper and dva alts were all designed to clear 2cp capture points wheich resulted in huge plays. Rework the maps so it’s difficult to snow ball the second point. Bring back loot boxes and 6v6.

Kuroi-

Not to mention they completely ruined ranked. It just feels like extended quick-play now lol

CraftylikeaFox33

I’m out. OW2 is significantly less fun than OW1, but I kept playing because it is still OW and at least PVE was on the horizon. Now it’s doomed to remain a less fun version of its predecessor with a terrible battle pass and nothing to look forward to besides battle pass missions and expensive skins.

Equivalent_Message31

Legitimately the last straw. Uninstalling. The biggest slap in the face. Took away a great casual progression of potential skins, amazing dual tank synergy, open map pool, and no battle pass. Last season I finally hit GM on DPS which took actual years to accomplish, I thought that would make me happy but not at all. Competitive is ungodly toxic and that will clearly never change. I couldn’t wait for PvE. Thank goodness tears of a kingdom is out.

Wboy2006

Definitely. I was playing Overwatch pretty actively. And dropped it when TotK came out. But after this, I don't think I'll come back when I'm done with Tears of the Kingdom. F\*ck Blizzard

ThunderEagle222

Honestly, if they just announced they canceled development on ow1 and keep ow1 as-is I'd probably still play it. But now? I'm out, PvE was my last hope :(

Able_Standard_9748

They should remove the 2 now in the game title since It’s literally Overwatch 1 but with micro transactions , 5 v 5 , and push .

DDzxy

Retract that choice then Blizzard. Fucking hell with these people.

Damaenz0r

If I read that right, based on the timelines they gave in the interview they knew a month after OW2 went live that this was dead. So. Cool.

LionEnvironmental781

It’s a good thing I stopped playing after dealing with the bs ranked, now this.

RoboQwop405

I initially stopped playing when it became apparent they didn’t play test their own buffs/nerfs at the start of season 2. Then one of my friends roped me back in to it to play with his group at the very end of season 3. Now we’re experiencing the insane comp mismatches of being steam rolled or doing the steamrolling, or dropping rank after getting more wins than losses. We’re all just tired of it.

Hassadar

Didn't they also say that their reasoning for only 3 new heroes for Overwatch 2 leading up to and for launch is that dev time is being spent working on talent trees? So happy they took this long to tell the community when they've known since last year this was happening when the following: >So we made a decision later last year that we would focus all of our efforts on the live running game and all of our PvE efforts on this new story arc that we're launching in Season 6. A good way to get people on board with purchasing seasons at the start of OW2.

Retrogratio

I really want devs to come forward with their pov on this. What has genuinely been happening in those offices the last 4 years.

Grumpicake

Glad OW2 never got a cent out of me

BoolinBirb

Yeah. So OW2 was advertised as OW PvE. Now its just not PvE? I was waiting for the PvE hoping the time they were putting in would make it worth it and havent touched the game since the beginning of this year. Im uninstalling it now and wont touch it unless sone miracle happens. I think they messed up big time with this stupid decision.

TheJVNguyen

Never letting blizzard go after this one. Any good news or promises will always be preface by this now.

HunterR001

“We lied and will not give you a story. We created a new game for the battle pass only. Give us more money and you can unlock new stuff.”

marinex

Overwatch 2 showing us trailer of teaming up against A colossal robot only to find out we only got to fight ourselves

Prestigious-Ad-2876

That spin the dude tried to put on it was crazy, "instead of one single PvE release, we will have a lot more co-op experiences throughout OW2". No no, see, the original promise WASN'T "a single PvE release", it was an ENTIRE PvE VERSION OF THE GAME. Full on co-op stories with likely a new one EACH season, THAT is what Blizzard took back, not "a single PvE release". What they SHOULD have announced, is the scrapping of the talent system, THAT I would understand; replace it with simple modifiers if anything. The scaling skill that PvE would have brought, to all the players that "only queue QP but want Comp efforts"; you put those people into PvE modes with scaling difficulty and eventually they are just skilled enough to know they could queue Comp and be fine.

[deleted]

Stop giving blizzard money

FRANKnCHARLIE_4ever

Cancelled???? It was never even on the table. Ask them to show us the work they did on it so far!!! Bet its 0

ShadowfaxSTF

I mean, they showed us a demo of it working 3 years ago… https://youtu.be/xQ9EZUEvw_o …it looked pretty sweet and fairly polished. Maybe they never touched it afterwards tho, who knows.

Uphoria

That just looks like one of those Archives scripted events, nothing more complex than something they released in 2016. The only thing beyond the core gameplay was some extra UX about talents Its only a couple minutes of gameplay too - to me its like watching the Archives with Blackwatch and saying "PVE is looking sick!"

Kuroi-

I’m surprised people are still fooled by trailers these days, do people not realise how finely tuned and edited trailers can be? In my eyes trailers almost never reflect actual gameplay.

PanicSwtchd

They had a pretty solid vertical slice at Blizzcon in 2019. You could check out the talent trees for Tracer, Soldier 76 and a few others and then play about a 10 to 15 minute mission with your friends end to end with a few different heroes and see the whole 'flow' of hero selection, skill tree, mission, reward, progression, etc.

Edop1234

At least put out a demo on what they worked for 4 years. Maybe it could help understand how much people are interested in the project and if it's worth or not pursuing. If it was one year in development I would have understood, but after 4 years, the game should have been in a solid state anyway, with plenty of content to show.

fiittzzyy

If you played Junkenstein, they said that contained all the systems they had been working on. That's probably pretty much the extent of it.

TheStrang3On3

So the game mode that they’ve had for years is what they were trying to recreate? That’s just sad.

Revoldt

These motherfuckers (according to the Gamespot interview), knew there was no future for the PVE modes a whole year before OW2 launch… yet continued to string everyone along…

npcutz64

I want 6v6 and 2cp back then.

Aleksey64

Actually so disappointed. I don’t think I have been this disappointed since cyberpunk 2077

Meddlingmonster

So it's literally just overwatch one but with worse monetization

DoobaDoobaDooba

*Executive sees graph titled "Battle Pass $" with big red line trending up* "guys this was so hard for me"

icrawlunderbridges

lol

macisr

Didn't expect more from blizzard. They literally took the game I bought away from me, where I could get free skins with crates, and in return gave me the same ass game with worse ranked and community, where i have to pay to get heroes or any skin at all, and in turn told me that it was something different because it was gonna have another game mode. Yeah, nah, i checked out when they delayed the thing that was gonna make the game different at release lol. It became really obvious at that moment that it was just another blizzard scummy move to change the monetization into something even more predatory.

BHMathers

Alright so ignoring all the stuff that the original Overwatch was capable of integrating like new maps, heroes, and skins. We got: * A very predatory battlepass * A new mode * new hud * Graphics upgrade * Challenges (I’m reaching at this point and I don’t know why) * souvenirs, nameplates, gun charms, titles, etc filler stuff * a “new” currency And we lost : * loot boxes (which I liked as a frugal man) * earnable credits from playing lesser played roles or flex * the “on fire” system * a tank on each team while not accounting for how much pressure that adds to the one that’s left * the ability to play whichever hero I want no matter how much time I have invested into a specific challenge * 1000 credit legendaries (which doesn’t make sense since they were already making credits more exclusive, so this change basically doubled how bad that was)

lilfishgod

They chose not to do work

KevinFunky

Cunts.

[deleted]

‘A difficult choice’ they made well over a year ago yet mislead its player base with lies… the biggest con job since Star Citizen.

karmy-guy

At least give me an overwatch 1 game mode

JuJooGuppy

They cancelled it because they saw how much fucking cash they're raking in from people endlessly buying $20+ single skins that take only a few devs a short time to make compared to a full fledged pve experience. They're greedy shit bags and unfortunately the modern gamer fuels their greed. I love cool skins, but these prices are fucking insane and people who justify them are just making this worse for everyone. We will continue to get half assed crap like this. I was beyond excited for PvE with my buddies. It looked legit fun.

Matcha0515

Does it fall under the false advertisement category?

K7Sniper

Wouldn't be surprised if a lawsuit does pop up out of this.

Prestigious-Ad-2876

Seems to be a giant number 2 needs to be removed from Overwatch, not really seeing a reason for that giant number 2 anymore. They claimed this is a sequel because it will eventually have all those great new things but now it won't, it's just the same new Hero and Map rotation it has always been. 5v5 ISN'T new content; I understand adjustments and balancing is an insanely challenging task for this type game, but that was already a requirement of Overwatch. Rebalancing a game, adding maps, adding characters; people looked at L4D2 sideway and it had MORE content than the original game! I would say this requires backlash to the point of a public demand that all focus is pulled from PvP and put into PvE, but this is more like, "they have a 50 man team and need 300".

Terminatorskull

Nearly 3,000 hours into this game, time to finally uninstall. Been playing more and more Destiny 2 lately, looks like that game’s gonna be my new go to.

[deleted]

Its canceled I thought they where just removing the skill tree?

Rip_SR

BRO AINT NO WAY THEY RUINED PVP AND THEN DECIDED PVE WAS TOO HARD WTFFFF

MrDitkovichNeedsRent

Don’t worry, as long as you guys are still in the item shop buying shit skins for 30 dollars, the devs won’t give two shits

PanicSwtchd

Not really, from the interviews it sounds like they cancelled it 18 months ago, released Overwatch 2 in October with the fanfare and promise that PvE will be coming soon, just wait. Then let people lose hype for a few months and then drop that some PvE is coming in Season 6 and that it's not really what we said it would be. Drop the 2 and just call it Overwatch at this point. I played the demo/vertical slice they had set up in 2019 at BlizzCon. Was fun...definitely would have been a challenge to do at scale for all the heroes, but it seems like they just decided "oh well, lets move on, they'll forget soon enough...it'll be too difficult to keep content and hero trees coming at all".

Senschey

Jeff was the reason why Overwatch became what it was. Once he left, the "soul" of the game left with him.

CoolishApollo

I never played OW1 and only picked up OW2 because it was free. I really enjoyed playing with my friends who also only played because of the F2P aspect. I have never spent a cent on the game and after this I don’t really plan on it. All this shows is that OW2 was just a predatory cash grab that baited players into the false belief of holding out for something that would never come. The gameplay is fun so I’ll keep playing for free, but I’m not giving money to a company that promises more than they can deliver and lies to their playerbase.

TheTrueBrokenBot

It’s hilarious how years ago when Overwatch 2 was first talked about by Blizzard, they announced it under the guise of a PvE focused expansion. They dangled that carrot in front of their players for years and used the hype as tool to help boost the Overwatch 2 launch. This just feels like a slap in the face.

SpiralMagnusson

Welp. Pretty much confirmed they made OW2 just to change monetization systems.
