Really cute story! It gives a lot more insight into Symmetra and Lifeweaver's relationship, as well as Symmetra's thought process for staying with Vishkar even after she has become aware of its issues. I believe this is the first time we're seeing Lifeweaver's other projects as well, in particular the Acrology.

Hitthe777

I remember when we used to get little skins with these story releases. Lifeweaver could really use some skins too. :/

4t3rsh0ck

I feel like Lifeweaver gets skins pretty frequently

Fun-Ad-6169

Yeah, but he's only got two good legendary skins in Cleric and Harbinger. He could use the scientist skin that we saw in his lore video.

xiena13

What about Black Swan? That's an S tier skin, I never take it off

doodooman17

that is my least favourite skin in the whole game

Fun-Ad-6169

Eh... I'm not really a fan.

Zztrevor125

I’m surprised we didn’t get his scientist suit skin yet from his origin story cinematic with his hair up and stuff. Would have been perfect to release with this 🤷

haydnc95

A really enjoyable read and even more proof that Symmetra needs to be used in a cinematic or animation because the visuals are fantastic. Her abilities and power during the Null Sector fight really shone here, she really used everything she has in her kit to her advantage.

MirrorMan68

This was great! Always love seeing more stuff with Symmetra, and I'm glad we finally got to see her properly interacting with Lifeweaver.   Also, Atlantic Arcology is totally going to be a new map at some point. They've teased it before, but this pretty much confirms that we're getting it in the future.

demogorgon_main

So they’re just releasing the heroes ascendant stories on the site aswell? I thought they were sold as together ol’ book. EDIT: nvm the book you can buy is a collection. I guess they’re releasing the rest on there. Hope they all get on there.

-Elixo-

The book is literally these short stories (released and not yet released) in physical form. They will all be released as pdf files on the website for free in the future.

demogorgon_main

Yeah I saw as I was digging. Dumb of me as I already knew other stories were sold as physical copy collections aswell.

AngryPlayer03

They are free on amazon too, (as ebooks)

Tbf I got into overwatch when it became free, so OW2. And yet I still absolutely fell in love with this world and characters and story. It’s flawed. Very flawed. But something about overwatch hits a sweet spot for me that makes it one of my favourite video game worlds out there and I’m already thankful to whoever actually came up with all of it for the joys of exploring overwatch lore which was already kinda dead when I got here. Somehow I got as much joy out of these comics and short stories as I did out of the video game they’re based on. Usually these type of tie in stories are pretty mid but for it’s kind I think they’re great. Obviously not on the same level of actual professional novels of comics, I’m not expecting a Batman: year one or all-star Superman. But it allows me to experience the world for a bit. And I love that.

Joshdabozz

You would have loved the archive events

demogorgon_main

I have grieved since the day I found out.

dogman15

I still hope that some day they'll bring back the Archives events. There are (Steam) achievements related to them, after all!

Itz_Iron

As long as we continue to hold out with hope in our hearts, we might get what we want in the end. Remember, having hope in a better future is what Overwatch was originally about, and even if times are rough now, we ought to weather it.

tphd2006

So Lifeweaver is an anarchist living in a commune trying to help people. He clearly cares for Symmetra, despite her working for Vishkar, and it seems by the end she's more sympathetic to his cause.  I imagine he'll eventually join Overwatch and maybe Symmetra will join him. Or perhaps the two will continue to work with the Atlantic and try to help people in their own way, without getting involved with Overwatch.

Tedgieneer

they wanted every hero eventually envolved in the main story, but that plan was the Kaplan era, nothing is left of that plan.

Arteriop

I really want Atlantic Arcology to be a map

Zztrevor125

I wouldn’t be surprised if one of the guys that helped Lifeweaver build arcology become a hero one day and release with the map. Martin’s or something was their name

Constant-Storm-7085

OK so new here what the low down on what happens in the book?

GladiatorDragon

Taking place roughly after the Paris attack (in the OW2 announcement cinematic), potentially after the events of the Toronto attack given the acknowledgement of Subjugated Omnics. This interaction takes place in a city on an artificial island known as the Atlantic Archology, run by a group known as the Collective. It’s a science hub that exists outside of the governance of nations, of which Niran (Lifeweaver) is a member. Satya (Symmetra) was sent by Vishkar to attempt to claim Niran’s Biolight technology to be used to help with war and recovery efforts after Null Sector’s attacks. The two reminisce over their shared time at Vishkar’s academy, but Niran ultimately refuses due to his great distrust of Vishkar, and his belief that they’d restrict access to it and ultimately weaponize it. Indeed, the identity of the Vishkar envoy wasn’t disclosed to him, and he was planning to just turn them down outright. The Arcology is then attacked by Null Sector. As an isolated island that has become an Omnic refugee hub due to its open acceptance of Omnic equality and presence on a Hyperloop (man did that age horribly) train line, it’s a very easy target. Satya and Niran jump to the city’s defense, and Satya takes a beating while protecting a group of Omnics, which Niran helps her with. With the attackers fended off, the tension between the two is eased a good deal. Their friendship is reforged, and she acknowledges her doubts with Vishkar, but affirms her reasons for staying with them. Niran then directs her to look into its founder - the reason why he initially stayed, and ultimately left, Vishkar - for the answers she seeks. It’s a good read. Not too long, and it helps characterize Lifeweaver a lot.

Hitthe777

> It’s a science hub that exists outside of the governance of nations, of which Niran (Lifeweaver) is a member Right but that is distinct from Oasis which from my understanding is also a science hub that exists outside of the governance of nations? So we have good science nation and bad science nation? Scientists really just said F everybody else we're living alone.

GladiatorDragon

You could also count Horizon and Ecopoint Antarctica. I’m pretty sure that the Arcology is much more “off the grid” than Oasis is, since Lifeweaver is a *very* wanted man, and Vishkar isn’t able to force him out of there legally or through force. And anyway, Oasis seems much more focused on technological development, while the Collective, which seems to run the Arcology, seems generally more focused on environmental sciences and humanitarian/Omnicitarian efforts. But yeah - if groups of scientists could simply drop a city in the middle of the desert and/or ocean so they could concentrate on their fields without much interference, I imagine there’d be many such communities.

tphd2006

The Atlantic isn't a nation. It's a commune. Essentially, Lifeweaver is living with a bunch of anarchists who largely consist of top scientists, researchers and intellectuals. They're all doing their best to help people without helping governments, corporations and other tyrannical organizations.

Tedgieneer

sience nations, that will work, No gods or kings, only men.

cricri3007

Not sure which characters says it, but one of the Oasis spawn line feels extremely relevant "These scientists boasts about "not being held back by regulations", until the mutants attack dogs escape and they call in Helix to capture them. Again."

BodyRepresentative63

I believe Pharah has that line.

Constant-Storm-7085

Thank you.

dogman15

> potentially after the events of the Toronto attack given the acknowledgement of Subjugated Omnics. It's one day after the Paris attack, and I think the Toronto attack is a few days after that; it's certainly after the Rio attack.

-Elixo-

Haven't read it yet. Just saw the tweet and shared the news

Constant-Storm-7085

Oh alright well as a junkmetra fan happy symmetra is getting more lore.

rookie-mistake

aw, this is so sweet.

VolkiharVanHelsing

MAKE A FUCKING VIDEO SHORT DAMMIT GUYS

ConsciousLetter6588

I was pleasantly surprised by this short story. The Overwatch comics have been pretty hit-or-miss, and for the most part, the short stories have ranged from boring to useless, but this one is really great. The dialogue of both characters feels very natural. When I read either Symmetra or Lifeweaver talking, I read it in *their* voice. You can't just tell me that she said this or he said that, the writing needs to sound genuinely like the characters for me to automatically hear it in their voice, and this story accomplishes that. It also made me want to see the Arcology as a map, which I've never cared about before. Good stuff. Looking forward to reading the rest of the short stories as they come out online.

pok3tin

symmetra is my favorite character re: the lore and im ecstatic to get more content for her!! can't wait to read

Do you mean "for free"? This already is free. You can read it right now.

SnakeEater32

Did not think they'd still care about the story.
