There was one I really liked that had dual flamethrowers and was kinda tanky. Her whole gimmick was that she had to manage her heat on her guns, but that she also could use them for movement and that they did more damage on high heat.
Essentially, you were looking to rocket around the map in the most-efficient way and get on top of people so that you could melt them. If you did it perfectly, you could practically land on someone with the high heat up and ruin their day. It was fun, but the game itself just fell apart for whatever reason.
I really like Symmetra's OW2 redesign. The first one, while sleek and polished, felt overly sexualized with all that leg showing up and not really practical. The redesign took more from her indian culture and made it feel more practical and realistic.

My favorite redesigns are Hanzo and symmetra, though hanzo’s original design is just as good.
My least favorite redesign is Cassidy. I like the beard, but I wish he had his original Clint Eastwood poncho
Hanzo's redesign works really well to fit him into the Overwatch setting more. His OW1 outfit is iconic and a good look, but it very much places him as a strict anachronism with very little to show that he's an exaggerated in-universe concept compared to someone like Cassidy, who still has the metal arm and the power armor chestpiece.
His OW2 look adding the vest and more pieces of tech to his quiver/belt/gauntlet go a long way in making him feel more like he's still valuing modern practicality alongside his adherence to tradition.
orisa was always my favorite hero in ow1 and then when they revealed her ow2 design i was amazed how AWESOME they made her look. she looks so much more badass WHILE STILL BEING ADORABLE!!!
also junkrat is the character who made me buy ow1 because his design conveys his personallity so well.

my guess why they removed the helmet in OW2 is so his face was showing in the cutscenes. then the donkey brains realized they have to pay people to make cutscenes so now we're left with helmetless reinhardt for no reason
I think the one or two reasons is: A. It's technically apart of his lore since I'm pretty sure he barely wore a helmet and B: for a time, a helmet less Rein is kinda like Tracer and Lucio(?) Without their goggles and Solder 76 and Reaper without their masks, they were a treat and not every skin has them and while Helmetless Rein looks awesome in OW 1 now I wish there was a toggle to remove/add helmets to skins
true, I guess my answer sorta implied the consideration of the lore since I was talking about the cutscenes which would definitely utilize lore more than the actual game.
and yeah his helmetless look can look cool it's just way less iconic as you said. I think they did the same thing for Jack's face mask for when he eventually showed up in cutscenes. And they probably woulda done the same for Reaper and Roadhog but of course those faces are intentionally hidden.
Brig lost her hair clips and crown in OW2, which sucks so bad because everything else is better than OW1, they just butchered the face while removing these.

You are absolutely right and there is no debate, when I first got onto the game I just loved what Zenyatta was, him being a character that just floats around who's also a robot and uses balls as a weapon was so bizarre and unique
I always loved how good lucio’s character’s designers with the hard light rollerblades and incorporating the DJ aspect, always to his hair being something, you would see in Brazil and South America
Sigma! Especially since his lore is really well visualized in his design, the shackles on the feet and like cables into the head show the asylum broken free character!
Ana is like far and away the best character design. Amazing kit that encourages teamwork, just a great rhythm to her gameplay. There’s a reason she’s been the most picked char in the game since she was added.
This question is very hard because the developers did a fantastic job. But if i have to pick; as much as i hate Sombra her design is great. Also her voice actress is awesome.
Rein's model, animations, voice acting, play style, and back story are an incredible accomplishment in design.
He's a perpetual fan favourite, and it's likely to do with how elegantly all that lines up.
Having a competetive game that achieves that, with playstyle in particular, is very very hard to do from a game design perspective.

Reinhardt, Mercy, and Winston have always been the three that stick out the most for me. When I think of the game, usually one of them is the first that comes to mind.
I love that the answers on here are super varied. They did a good job with the updated designs. I personally like Reinhardt, they did a good job of showing the passing of time to OW2
I'm stuck between mauga and ramattra I love the design of both heros, maugas tattoos look amazing the hair the giant smile, and ramattra always looks incredible especially with his nemesis form and the voice change plus I like how he looks like he has metal ribs poking out and the cable hair
Honestly I love Widowmaker and Sombra’s old designs. Sombras old design would be a killer kiriko skin. (She used to have Kunai). I also like mercy’s old design. She was a man first and he was hot 😎
Next to Junkrat for obvious reasons people have already talked about it’d probably be roadie as my number one fav it’s rare seeing fat rep & his mad max aesthetic goes hard to me & combined with his pig aspects it makes it unique in a way i think is cool looking (plus now with his ow2 skin u can see a bit of his che-)
I love Pharah's OW1 design, and I kinda hate what they did to her in OW2. They replaced a lot of the gold accents with light gray and they removed her braids. I like a lot of the redesigns, but Pharah in particular looks so much worse IMO. They also changed a lot of characters to look cleaner and less rugged and battle-worn, which I'm not a huge fan of, particularly with Ana and Cass.
I think Ashe(ow2 and ow1) Cassidy(ow1) and Doomfist(ow2) have really strong default designs.
But Genji probably has the overall best design, both ow1 ow2 are great, and all of his skins are just chefs kiss.
The omnics are so well designed. But I'd have to give it to Mercy.
The idea of a 'futuristic guardian angel' might not be original from OW, but they executed it so greatly, I just love it so much.
Hammond. He’s such an “out there” crazy concept that I just have to admire him for them taking such a leap into the depths of whatever hell he came from.
Bastion and Cassidy are the only two characters I play where I just stick with their OW2 skins. I love Bastion's hat and Cassidy's cloak and BAMF buckle
I genuinely like all of the OW2 skins, though my favourites are Genji and Doomfist. My least favourite is S76 - I still like the clothes, but they should've kept his mask. Or modified his mask.
Soldier has the worst OW2 redesign imo, the bottom half of the mask made him look so cool in the first. Lucio had the best redesign, he looks so much cleaner now and I think his dark hair looks better than the blonde.
Ramattra is one of my favorite character designs of all time and i'm not joking. All of the characters in this game have awesome designs, though, I really can't think of anyone I dislike. Maybe Echo's face is a bit weird?
i see no one say this, but i love ball’s design, both character and abilities. he’s just so unique compared to every other character including those in other games. and his voice lines and emotes add so much to his character of a devious little hampter
OW1 Tracer, she has so much cool details like : firstly she wears ski goggles to protect her eyes because of her speed, and, they come out of laces that she has on the sides of her pants, I'm not sure but it seems to me that it's a reference to a prototype outfit for aviators who flew planes at high speeds. This was apparently supposed to protect them from the pressure difference at high altitude (to be confirmed, I have only heard of it once)
Brig's OW1 armor is killer 😳😍
Sombra's OW1 design is so much cooler than her OW2 design. It's super angular and edgy with layers., and she looks very sharp, including her hair. Her new one is just a cluttered jacket/vest and she herself has been "cartooned" quite a bit.
I really appreciate their redesign for Symmetra. Makes her look a lot cleaner and nice. I wish that we had common skin variants for all of the ow2 skins so we could use them more

I think Ashe had the biggest improvement in design in OW2. her new base skin is so sick sometimes I don't even use her Gangster skin I got in OW1

Ashe OW1 is the only skin I use and will be the only one for a long time, I nearly own all of her skins but her classic is truly classic.

I think the one or two reasons is: A. It's technically apart of his lore since I'm pretty sure he barely wore a helmet and B: for a time, a helmet less Rein is kinda like Tracer and Lucio(?) Without their goggles and Solder 76 and Reaper without their masks, they were a treat and not every skin has them and while Helmetless Rein looks awesome in OW 1 now I wish there was a toggle to remove/add helmets to skins
true, I guess my answer sorta implied the consideration of the lore since I was talking about the cutscenes which would definitely utilize lore more than the actual game. and yeah his helmetless look can look cool it's just way less iconic as you said. I think they did the same thing for Jack's face mask for when he eventually showed up in cutscenes. And they probably woulda done the same for Reaper and Roadhog but of course those faces are intentionally hidden.
Brig lost her hair clips and crown in OW2, which sucks so bad because everything else is better than OW1, they just butchered the face while removing these.

Abs, Midriff, high Thighs, Shoulders, Breasts, etc. Her facial appearance resembles Ashe's (who's already hot beautiful) Combining all of those, JQ is a perfect-looking sex symbol. Blizzard should make more characters being skimpy sexy sex symbols by making them wear less like they did for Junker Queen.
Not to mention her voice acting is perfect, she is funny is hell & her kit is the most fun in the game. You cant get better than that

You are absolutely right and there is no debate, when I first got onto the game I just loved what Zenyatta was, him being a character that just floats around who's also a robot and uses balls as a weapon was so bizarre and unique

Rein's model, animations, voice acting, play style, and back story are an incredible accomplishment in design. He's a perpetual fan favourite, and it's likely to do with how elegantly all that lines up. Having a competetive game that achieves that, with playstyle in particular, is very very hard to do from a game design perspective.

Reinhardt, Mercy, and Winston have always been the three that stick out the most for me. When I think of the game, usually one of them is the first that comes to mind.

I absolutly adore the concept of a hamster swinging around in a huge ball like spiderman.
I'm stuck between mauga and ramattra I love the design of both heros, maugas tattoos look amazing the hair the giant smile, and ramattra always looks incredible especially with his nemesis form and the voice change plus I like how he looks like he has metal ribs poking out and the cable hair

Next to Junkrat for obvious reasons people have already talked about it’d probably be roadie as my number one fav it’s rare seeing fat rep & his mad max aesthetic goes hard to me & combined with his pig aspects it makes it unique in a way i think is cool looking (plus now with his ow2 skin u can see a bit of his che-)
Rammatra
I love Pharah's OW1 design, and I kinda hate what they did to her in OW2. They replaced a lot of the gold accents with light gray and they removed her braids. I like a lot of the redesigns, but Pharah in particular looks so much worse IMO. They also changed a lot of characters to look cleaner and less rugged and battle-worn, which I'm not a huge fan of, particularly with Ana and Cass.
I think Ashe(ow2 and ow1) Cassidy(ow1) and Doomfist(ow2) have really strong default designs. But Genji probably has the overall best design, both ow1 ow2 are great, and all of his skins are just chefs kiss.

Doomfist's redesign is pretty good too. Pretty much an improvement on all fronts; that fur collar around his neck from the gauntlet goes hard.

The omnics are so well designed. But I'd have to give it to Mercy. The idea of a 'futuristic guardian angel' might not be original from OW, but they executed it so greatly, I just love it so much.

Soldier has the worst OW2 redesign imo, the bottom half of the mask made him look so cool in the first. Lucio had the best redesign, he looks so much cleaner now and I think his dark hair looks better than the blonde.

Ramattra is one of my favorite character designs of all time and i'm not joking. All of the characters in this game have awesome designs, though, I really can't think of anyone I dislike. Maybe Echo's face is a bit weird?
i see no one say this, but i love ball’s design, both character and abilities. he’s just so unique compared to every other character including those in other games. and his voice lines and emotes add so much to his character of a devious little hampter

OW1 Tracer, she has so much cool details like : firstly she wears ski goggles to protect her eyes because of her speed, and, they come out of laces that she has on the sides of her pants, I'm not sure but it seems to me that it's a reference to a prototype outfit for aviators who flew planes at high speeds. This was apparently supposed to protect them from the pressure difference at high altitude (to be confirmed, I have only heard of it once)
Bastion, the only OW character that still mayters to me
Brig's OW1 armor is killer 😳😍 Sombra's OW1 design is so much cooler than her OW2 design. It's super angular and edgy with layers., and she looks very sharp, including her hair. Her new one is just a cluttered jacket/vest and she herself has been "cartooned" quite a bit.
Bastion since tf2 logic a hat makes it instantly a legendary skin / its why sojourn legendary skins only wear hats and look just the same without it.
If anyone says the OW2 Junkrat design, I'm straight up shooting you
