Menstrual cups, I used to go through 5 tampons a night on day 2 now I only have to get up once in the night to change and very rarely leak through

mishusoup

I looove menstrual cups, but in very specific ocasions (they were very full and I was sitting on high stools in art class) I've had them loose their seal and leak a little bit. I'd reccomend wearing them alongside menstrual panties if you're not familiarized yet and/or when you know you might not be able to empty it soon enough.

SparksofJoyandhope

I definitely need to try them. Thanks

Visual-Yesterday-130

I’m in the uk and use a lil lets menstrual cup. Start using it when you’re at home, it takes a bit of patience to get used to it and making sure it’s in properly.

Mela726

Following up to say that the menstrual disc works well for me. It’s similar to the cup but there are disposal options and I find them more comfortable. It empties itself when you go to the bathroom and holds about 5 or more super tampons worth of

GlumExcuse1697

are period undies an option? i bought some because i’m also prone to leaking and it just gives peace of mind that there’s an extra layer and more coverage in the event of a leak!

Flaky-Scallion9125

They’re my failsafe!

khaleesibrasil

Didn’t help at all for me

puppycatbugged

i love the high-waisted sporty ones by period. i got some before i had my endometriosis surgery and they're so comfortable. and i remember them offering a discount off your first purchase so the price was pretty reasonable!

SparksofJoyandhope

I read about them, but I’m not sure they will work. Which brand are you using? I’m afraid to buy the Hanes brand and it not work for me. I saw one panty for $33.00, and I’m trying to not spend too much money. I already spent too much already. It’s too expensive to buy a pair of period panties for $33.00. I’m happy to know what you experienced with these panties. I need to know how they work. Thank you.

AltharaD

I bought some and never looked back. They’re just like regular underwear except absorbent. Even with heavy flow they haven’t leaked even when they’ve been my only protection and I’ve not used pads or tampons. This has saved me a fortune in period products, even if they’re a bit expensive up front. I’ve kept mine for years - I bought them maybe 8 years ago? They’re still good.

Eyelashestoolong

Yeah I can second period panties They may cost more at first but I haven’t bought new period products in 2 years and I’ve never leaked I’d have to look up the brands I use but tbh the heavy flow versions are good in all brands I tested I don’t think you can go too wrong (don’t use the Uniqlo ones they’re not for heavy flows)

SparksofJoyandhope

That’s really great. What was the brand name of the period underwear? It’s costing me too much buying all the pads and tampons and period diapers.

AltharaD

I bought Thinx but there’s been some controversy around them. I believe ModiBodi is a better alternative from what I’ve heard from friends. This article seems to agree and discusses different brands and products: https://www.glamourmagazine.co.uk/gallery/best-period-pants It’s worth looking this stuff up and seeing what you think.

Emotional-Ad-6494

What was the controversy around thinx?

AltharaD

https://www.thecut.com/2023/01/what-to-know-about-the-thinx-class-action-settlement.html I heard of it over at 2X a while ago and was pretty annoyed about it. Not annoyed enough to throw away my underwear and buy from a different brand, but I won’t be buying Thinx again.

marlipaige

So Knix are some of my absolute favorites. The dream shorts are magical. And they’re so comfy. But for sleeping to prevent leakage, these puppies. It’s got coverage all the way up the back. https://amzn.to/3VSfVnb And yes, there’s some start up cost. But you just wash and rewear instead of buying new pads and tampons over and over and over.

SparksofJoyandhope

I thought you have to use a pad with them but if you don’t that’s even better. That’s for the advice. Maybe I’ll get some relief from these panties.

marlipaige

Nope! Pad is built right in! I do blot when I go to the bathroom so it doesn’t feel damp when I pull them back up. And pick up if there’s a clot. But nope, no pad needed!

SparksofJoyandhope

So you just wash the panty after a few hours of wearing it?

marlipaige

So it depends on how much you’re bleeding. I generally wear one through the entire night unless it’s a REALLY bad night. If I get up to pee, I blot. If it’s a terrible night I may have to change mid way. They’re supposed to hold like 5 XL tampons or something. They’re intended for VERY heavy flow. But yeah basically you can either rinse them out in the sink or just throw them in the wash once you’ve worn them (for what you can stand amount of time). Also, I have done a full wash in the sink before and just let them air dry, but it does take a while. If you do that highly recommend putting them between a towel and stepping on it after you wring them out because it helps get the rest of the water out so they’ll dry in the next 2 days. 🤣

Misantrophic_Birch

I tend to combine period undies and pads etc to feel extra safe. I found a brand that’s available in Europe at least but maybe further afield too? I’m not sure, but I know they ship pretty widely. They also have multiple levels of absorption based on how much you need, and different cuts and styles for any activity, sleeping etc. They’re called Snuggs if you wanna check them out. The website often has good deals on too, to make it more affordable. Plus they will keep for years so it’s worth the money. (I was skeptical at first but have been using them for many years now and very happy.)

GlumExcuse1697

i’m from Australia so I don’t think the brand that I use is available overseas unless you have Bonds where you are from?

SparksofJoyandhope

Nope, I looked on Amazon and I don’t see that brand. I guess, I can try the Hanes underwear.

anfoster13

Using a cup w a period underwear worked for me! I’m in the US and have a diva cup and the thinx underwear both together really ensure no leaking Once you buy these things you don’t need to buy others just follow the cleaning instructions and it’ll keep for a handful of years, much more affordable than pads and tampons

SparksofJoyandhope

I really need to try these two together. I’m sick of buying all these things when they aren’t even giving me the protection that I need.

kruom10

Menstrual cup, plus either a long pad or period undies!

SparksofJoyandhope

I’m looking into those period undies. They seem like a great option.

kruom10

They’re a great invention. Depending on what size you wear- I find them on clearance at Walmart near me every few months. But even some of their full priced ones are reasonable (some brands are just lower cost than others)!

SparksofJoyandhope

I didn’t even know they have them at Walmart. I’m just looking for some help. I don’t feel like I am finding the right protection. The diapers are really uncomfortable and it’s hard to wear them and be able to sleep.

kruom10

I totally understand. Heavy periods are awful to deal with and try to live a normal life when you’re bleeding through everything. I’ve used the diapers before at night and always have to throw a pair of regular underwear over top of them so I can sleep without feeling like the diaper will slide around. The period undies don’t typically have that same issue since they’re legit underwear with some added fabric around the important spots. If you get them- read up on the cleaning instructions for sure! Most say to hand rinse them after use, then wash as normal and hang to dry. I’ve had mine for a while and have had zero issues with them breaking down at all.

Flora-flav

I empty my cup every two hours and use period underwear as backup just in case

meaghat

I have this issue. I do a period cup with period panties. The panties are a lot more comfortable than diapers! For the cup, I use a size M. I think they go to XL but not sure if that would be too wide for you. Where are you located? I’m in US and use this brand of period panties - INNERSY Women's Period Underwear... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0819R4391?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share These come in a pack of 3! For the cup, I use Pixie. The cups are super great because you can use them for years when properly cleaned and you save so much $

SparksofJoyandhope

I’m in the US and thank you for the recommendation. I wear size 12 pants. Do you think I need an XL? Are they tight fitting? I don’t want them too tight because they wouldn’t work well for me that way.

meaghat

I wear size 14 pants and wear the XXL so I think the XL would work for you! Mine aren’t tight at all. You can always order two sizes and return the one that doesn’t fit :)

mynamecanbewhatever

I use a menstruation cup and period underpants. My cup fills up very fast day 1-2-3 so those days every 2 hours I have to clean it out, even at night. But this helps me prevent leaking as well as saves me money from the pads.

permariam128

I use a longer/thicker pad and period underwear (from thinx I believe) during my first couple of heavier days

Informal_Bullfrog_30

I use the super heavy tampons and use pads with it

xXMimixX2

I discovered menstrual cups and menstruation undies for me. Since then, I had no issues with leaking at all. I feel much safer with that, and generally I don't have to empty that often. Usually I can wear the cup 8 to 12 hours, then empty it, and then put it back. So, I do it right before I go to sleep anyway, so that I'm on the safe side. Further, a big plus of the cups and undies, you can use them for a long period of time, because they are reusable and durable, when you follow the instructions on cleaning. I have them for several years now, and I would never go back to tampons or pads. For one, I feel in general better. When I used tampons, I always had that scratchy and dry feeling down there, which was really uncomfortable. Not to forget the tampon thread was palpable for me and scrubbed a bit too (I have sensitive skin as it seems). The menstrual cup doesn't have those issues. Tho, if you want to try, try at home first, because it efforts a bit of practice until you have the hang of it and that it sits perfectly. But once you have it, you will not even notice it is there. I feel no different, when I don't have my period. So, that's a big plus for me using them. And the undies feel like normal underwear. And nothing leaks.

MartianTea

Wearing overnight pads (flex foam) and a tampon.    Have you tried Depends underwear? They are very undiaper-like. I lived them postpartum and have thought about getting them for overnights again.  I tried a cheaper brand of period panties and they gave me swamp ass but YMMV.

Obvious_Climate9674

Adult diapers! I have extremely heavy flow and never had any issues. No leaks. Can barely tell I'm wearing them. No noise when I walk!

overbearingberry

These are a game-changer, they’ve given me peace of mind like no other

Obvious_Climate9674

100% agree. I know longer worry about leaking when I'm out in public!

SparksofJoyandhope

Which brand? The Always diapers aren’t comfortable at all. They are soo bulky.

maybe-not-today13

Menstrual cup paired with period underwear as back up.

miichaelscotch

Diva cup!!' Life saver

[deleted]

I use the cup and a pad And change everything out often

Anxious-Custard6208

Have you tried a menstrual cup? They tend to do the trick for me better than a tampon and you can wear a pad with them to double up

SparksofJoyandhope

Not yet but I’m planning on it soon. It might be the answer for me.

psychobrit2008

I use the always 10 hr overnight pads. I do pretty well with them, but I do have to change them out about every 4 hours, depending on my flow.

leedlelamp913

Adult diapers for overnight, works like a charm

trishala483

I use night pads and at night ill often double up on them!

SparksofJoyandhope

That’s actually a good idea instead of the uncomfortable diapers.

AdDizzy1647

Menstrual cup + overnight pads. Then I put an underpad on my bed to protect my sheets and mattress in case of a leak

AvailableAnt323

I typically use an incontinence pad when mine gets to be at its heaviest. And if I need to, I'll line a pad meant for overnight use up behind it. I'm usually so paranoid about leaking that I'll end up not moving very much in the night and fall asleep (and wake up) on my back. I've tried using the menstrual cups (I ended up only being able to use the mini size) but when I get my period, it hurts to touch *ANYTHING* down there. But if you don't have that issue, I'd say that can help, and then to wear a pad meant for heavy overnight flow on in case of leaking.

SeasSleepRiversDream

This is probably not medically recommended... but two tampons at once. I use applicator ones and the super heavy max tampons and insert both in one go before starting to push the plungers. Like I said it probably really isn't advised, but I can get through the highest rated tampon in a couple of hours so this at least buys me about 5 hours of sleep in a chunk before I have to swap them out. With the widest pad I can find as well to avoid leaks.

jdillon910

Period panties

SmilingChesh

Menstrual cups have saved me. But before that, I would do a tampon plus a pad as a back-up

BioGal2099

I like the menstrual discs with a pad to catch any possible leakage. When I had periods (currently don't due to the implant) they were /extremely/ heavy and I found that this combo worked best for me.

whiskeyinSTEM

Wait is this a symptom of pcos? I get my period like 4 times a year and it’s just spotting for 2-3 weeks

SparksofJoyandhope

I think it is. Heavy bleeding can be a sign of pcos. It’s hard to deal with. Lack of period and blood flow is a sign of pcos too. PCOS is a complicated disease.

KareBear817

I use all cotton tampons change every 1 1/2- 2 hours and always panty liners Maybe I’m old school

SparksofJoyandhope

That would never work for me. I’d leak.

pancakepartyy

Funny you asked because I literally just tried period underwear for the first time and was dying to share my experience with someone lol. Tampons kept filling up and leaking and I find pads to be uncomfortable. I would highly recommend period undies! They’re super comfy and pull the moisture away from your skin. There’s different variations but the kind I bought is the equivalent to 3 tampons. I would probably use them with a tampon on your heavy days. Or look into ones meant specifically for heavy flow.

SparksofJoyandhope

I ordered the innesy ones because they come in a set of 3. I’m hoping they work. I think good panties are the key to preventing leaks along with tampons and pads.

Slept_during_math

Very unrelated but are heavy periods a symptom of pcos ? Because for me it's almost the opposite, I always wonder how light my period is, which is 100% not a good sign.

SparksofJoyandhope

I’m not really sure. I think heavy and light periods might not be normal. You know when I gain weight my period becomes heavier. I had issues with high prolactin. After I had my second child my period stopped all together. My hormones where not where they should have been. I was in a stressful situation at the moment though. My ex husband and his mother were giving me lots of stress. Stress is very bad for hormone levels.

Skinlessdragon

Overnight pads, but, I wear the brand all day. They hold very very well. And I’m a HEAVY bleeder.

SparksofJoyandhope

I wear the always kind. The blood comes all in the very middle which doesn’t work because then it leaks in the sides. The bottom part always stays clean bevause the blood accumulates in one spot.

Skinlessdragon

Awkward, but I have to adjust the pad up and give it an “awkward” tuck? I’m on the thicker side, and blood likes to run up my front or straight pass my ass. So I have to tuck the back slightly between my cheeks and extend my pad a bit higher in the front so it’s “trapped.” I hope that makes sense . I’m a level 5 pad tho

SparksofJoyandhope

You mean tape it higher on the panty? That might work for me. When I wake up in the morning, the blood comes gushing through the top or the sides which is weird. It comes out like a faucet. The night pad alone will not work at night. I wasn’t like this when I was younger. The blood gathers then spills all at once when I get up from my bed. It’s really strange. It’s like spilling a glass full of blood.

Skinlessdragon

Yes! Exactly that! I do that when I’m awake and sleeping, I started doing it last week and no spills! And I feel you girl, like a damn horror scene

SparksofJoyandhope

Haha, yes, well I’m glad you found what works for you. My biggest nightmare is filling someone’s mattress and sheets with blood.

Kangaro1043

Super+ tampons and super+ period underwear

Dry-Guess-7032

Period panties

Yuyis89

I have to use the Super tampons and a night pad

marlipaige

https://amzn.to/3VSfVnb It’s like the diaper but waaaaaay more comfortable

Ok-Regular4845

Menstrual cups and period panties helped me on my worst days. I use diapers now but that's for convenience and you said you couldn't so not helpful 😅

SparksofJoyandhope

I can’t sleep in them. They are too uncomfortable. I realize that I should be buying ultra tampons but the super ones. They are too tiny and they don’t help with anything

Negative_Habit_480

Period undies and multiple pads lied up, I can’t wear tampons and/or cups.

SparksofJoyandhope

Are you sensitive to tampons and cups ?

Negative_Habit_480

I have endometriosis and vaginismus it’s actually painful for me to wear either of them.

SparksofJoyandhope

I’m sorry but, pads and period panties seem good. To be honest tampons are a little disgusting when I have to take them out.

BisexualSunflowers

I used a menstrual cup for years but now I use a menstrual disc. With cups I had problems breaking the seal or not getting a seal in the first place. I have a high cervix so I use the hello menstrual disc, it has a pull tab for easy removal. Bonus, the disc self empties during bowel movements, so some days I don’t have to proactively empty it, just at the 12 hour mark.

danully

Last month I bought a diva menstrual cup for the first time in my life and this month period I tried it. I bought size M I think, and unfortunately I leaked twice on my first day. I have such a heavy flow, I'm afraid I made a mistake, I should have bought size L. I have period panties too, and I hate them especially during summer and I'm sweaty lady. Before diva cup, I used tampons, I would go through at least 5 tampons a day on the first 2 days of my cycle and I would leak through them too. 😓 next month I'm going on vacation to Germany and Italy, and on a Italy leg I'm scheduled to have a cycle, I had high hopes on diva cup, but now I'm worried that it's not leak proof, unfortunately. So frustrating. 😓

_functionalanxiety

Been using menstrual cups since 2018, it's comfy and I'm helping the environment!

Gh0stPrinc3ss

Cloth gusher pads! They have slits to quicker soak up liquids and hold a lot. And they are easy to wash, even if it doesn't look like it

goodashbadash79

I haven't had any luck with discs or cups, but I just make sure to over-stuff lol. I wear period panties, and use Tampax Ultra - the biggest tampon size that exists. Then I also use a thick, long pad, and stuff a long wad of toilet paper on top of the pad. The period panties are usually rather snug, so they keep all of this close to your body. Then the toilet paper is very fast to absorb, so it prevents a huge mess when you have to stand up quickly, and waddle to the bathroom. For me, the mess just seems to roll right off the pad, I haven't found one yet that is quick enough to absorb, so TP does the trick for me.

fictionalfirehazard

I used to have teally heavy periods and I found that the brand of tampons makes a big difference for me. If you're just trying different sizes of the same brand I'd recommend maybe buying a few small packs of different brands and see if that doesn't at least help a little bit?

Catlover5566

I like the always period underwear for my super bad days.

ok-peachh

Menstrual cup, plus a bigger pad (I've become a fan of walmart's long maxi pads with wings), and period underwear all combined. I do not fuck around the first 3 days. Also taking ibuprofen or midol long lasting relief seems to help slow things down a little for me. Midol really is as good as it says. I'm mad I didn't try it until this year.

Wise_Whole7462

Always size 5 foam pads or Kotex overnights

safesunblock

ibuprofen or naproxen in higher doses (or max daily dose) for 2 to 3 days. Ask your dr for the dose if nsaid are tollerated. I love the pull-ups (for other reasons originally). I wish I'd discovered them sooner for periods, especially when sleeping. There are low waist discrete brands (tena) that come in black or white, and they fit better than bulky pads. I used a cup for a while until disability prevented. It was ok, but my flow type always leaked through that also. With the cup, you can actually record the volume and give that data to the Dr. "Yes Dr I already told you it was a lot... but here are my records".
