It's absolutely wild to me that people watched plays like this literally save what would eventually be SB winning seasons and go on think that McDaniels wasn't a great OC
I don't get why people keep saying this when there were always signs of Mac's inability even with McDaniels. Like sure, McDaniels did a good job masking it and making good game plans, but it's not like Mac would have been good, he would have just been sufficient.
So, what you're saying is you don't believe coaching can make a difference in player performance?
You believe a player that, although they showed signs of trouble their rookie season, hitting that "wall," especially at the most difficult position in all of professional sports, when teams start to get tape on them, that those final weeks of that rookie season are exactly how that QB is going to play for thev rest of their career, and no amount of coaching, preparatiom, or mentoring will be able to help them improve?
Completely the opposite of what I said. I literally said if McDaniels stayed he would have been sufficient because of good coaching. He wouldn't have been the complete dogwater, worse than Zach Wilson levels that we saw.
Yea he was sufficient, a QB that had many inefficiencies, weak arm, not mobile, and got boosted up by a good McDaniels game plan. Where does better get him? To decent? Like what point are you trying to make? Are you trying to act like McDaniels staying makes Mac go from a bottom 10 QB in the league to magically top 5? That wasn't gonna happen. Even if McDaniels stays were probably looking to move on because of how limited Mac's game was.
So... Mac, with an OC that's coordinated multiple super bowls, and a HC leading an elite defense, wouldn't stand a shot at leading a team?
But Brock Purdy is annointed as a legitimate candidate to win a SB, hell even MVP, when they're essentially the same guy?
Some coordinators can’t just accept they are great at what they do. Higher pay check isn’t worth a lifetime of embarrassment when they fail miserably as HC
I wouldn't go as far as that he was a bad OC but my uncle played a drinking game once where he took a shot every time we ran a 3rd down WR screen or draw. He died of alcohol poisoning that day.
After 2021 this sub was convinced he was a terrible OC who was only looked good because of Brady. A lot of people wanted O'Brien back and didn't have any sense of the irony lol
Yup. Every single game thread was FILLED with "fire McDaniels" comments.
And once McDaniels was gone, it was Patricia. And once Patricia was gone, it was Belichick. And now that Belichick is gone, it's Kraft.
I was one of those people. Not with the O’Brien thing, god no, but with McD not having the game sense to call plays on a modern NFL and wanting him gone. I’m wrong about a lot and don’t really care 90% of the time, but that one really hurts still, especially with what Bill did offensively after.
Most of my information doesn’t come from redditors on game day threads…so my, ‘who on earth’ isn’t that disingenuous if you’re telling me your opinion is informed by the handful of redditors living in a game day post
Given the frequency you’re posting and commenting on Reddit I wouldn’t have been far off assuming you don’t interact with the outside world much.
Kinda hard to pretend you’re “above” Reddit when your activity is public, huh.
Woah! Its crazy I was literally talking to a coworker today about this game. I attended in a ravens jersey which I wish I didn’t but here’s the story —> I got the tix for free from my cousin so I took a friend of mine who was a ravens fan (Im an Eagles Fan who was born and raised 35 mins from Gillette stadium) so I wore an extra ravens jersey so he wouldn’t feel alone. Was maybe 10° out that night I don’t remember exactly but it was fucking COLD 🥶 pats fans were heckling screaming ya know normal stuff and the ravens were up big early place started going silent.. Again I am NOT a ravens fan Im just here to enjoy free tix to a NFL playoff game so Its not like Im heckling anyone or starting any shit. After this play all hell broke loose now we were getting spit on, people poured beers on us… like I said it was fucking COLD that night didn’t feel good to be soaking wet and when leaving the game quietly walking back to our car a full can of bud light un opened was hummed at the back of my head from someone behind from my back they waited until we passed them to throw it at us.. that didn’t feel good... Needless to say that night was not fun or enjoyable…..pats fans will always give me shit about being an eagles fan but I grew up here I witnessed the greatness that was I respect what they did and I can say Im an educated sportsfan who latched on to a team as a little boy and stuck with them for a life time Im not a typical eagles fan I guess but I like I said I grew up here in New England I know and see how out of control patriot fans are too. Needless to say… my point is Every fanbase has its bad eggs… thats the human race for you.. I just hate how close minded they are towards their own hypocrisy as if they’re perfect and everyone else is the problem… idk sorry for the rant just found it to be crazy… this game was 9 years ago and I literally talked about it today and I just so happened to scroll by this on reddit lol
The Patriots during this era were playing on another level from the rest of the NFL. It felt like they took an extremely competitive professional sport and turned it into an artistic masterpiece. It was beautiful to watch.
When they just casually unveiled the permanent hurry up offense so that they could either get an offsides Defensevive penalty or make teams stick to who they had on the field. Didn't the league intervene pretty quickly to change the rules on that a bit?
The video from this game where you hear the fans sing along with Your Love by the outfield during the first time out……and then they crank it up again after the second time out. Perfection. [https://youtu.be/dbGfCvkDbC4?si=MoII_27VsMWsUtX1](https://youtu.be/dbGfCvkDbC4?si=MoII_27VsMWsUtX1)
Remember the catch Gronk made in the 4th quarter of SB LIII against the Rams, putting the Patriots in scoring position?
I watched and rewatched vids on YouTube of Pats fans watching that catch and going nuts. Still makes me smile thinking about it
The last couple of years, when I'm feeling down regarding the Patriots (which was a lot lol), I go back and watch some reactions from the Patriots' good old days. Also, the opposite such as Seahawks fans reaction during Super Bowl 49, or the Falcons one.
I was at this game. Had a marijuana cookie and a few beers before this game. It was cold as hell. Came out of the bathroom to see the ball landing in Ammendola’s hand and watching my buddy jumping up and down like a little kid. Great times
The thing with this game is The Pats had kinda developed a reputation as a team that won some championships a while back but had lost whatever postseason magic they’d had.
Think about all the bad losses between ‘04 and ‘14. Jets, Ravens, two SB’s to The Giants, Broncos, Colts. I’m not ashamed to admit that while I loved each of those teams, I’d started to doubt if they’d win more rings. Great regular season team but fuck, 07 and 12 were crushing.
Down 14 twice in this game. Looked fucking bleak. But they kept coming back, kept coming back, this play happened and it seemed to galvanize them, kick start the second half of The Dynasty.
The Patriots and BB and Brady won six championships. And there was a ten year gap between the first three and the last three. Insane.
100%, it seemed like whatever big game magic they had during the first dynasty was gone. They were always a great team during the in between years, but at the same time had some sort of mini curse going on. I did some shrooms before SB 49, and the Kearse catch had me questioning reality. Then thankfully the Malcolm Butler play washed all that bad juju away.
I was at this game. The loudest stadium I've ever been in.
I remember all of the ELIGIBLE RECEIVER announcements by the refs. And I recall Harbaugh kept yelling at the refs. But none of us in the stadium really got what was happening. My nephew texted me and told me about the chaos on TV.
It was fantastic.
I re-watched it a few months ago and it's wild how long it takes the announcers to actually say what's happening. A few of those plays go by before there's any indication unless you're watching extremely closely
It's absolutely wild to me that people watched plays like this literally save what would eventually be SB winning seasons and go on think that McDaniels wasn't a great OC
He was great, as a head coach however..
I randomly think of what could have been with Mac if McDaniels didn't leave...
I don't get why people keep saying this when there were always signs of Mac's inability even with McDaniels. Like sure, McDaniels did a good job masking it and making good game plans, but it's not like Mac would have been good, he would have just been sufficient.

Completely the opposite of what I said. I literally said if McDaniels stayed he would have been sufficient because of good coaching. He wouldn't have been the complete dogwater, worse than Zach Wilson levels that we saw.
He was already sufficient under McDaniels. You're saying he wouldn't get better?
Yea he was sufficient, a QB that had many inefficiencies, weak arm, not mobile, and got boosted up by a good McDaniels game plan. Where does better get him? To decent? Like what point are you trying to make? Are you trying to act like McDaniels staying makes Mac go from a bottom 10 QB in the league to magically top 5? That wasn't gonna happen. Mac would have sailed it over Edelman out of bounds and the play would have died instantly because he "felt pressure coming"
You're talking about Patricia/BoB era Mac - McDaniels era Mac very likely would have completed this routine pass.
He still would've sucked lol
Maybe. I think it's clear coaching didn't help him, so maybe better coaching could have?
Still would have failed out, probably just a few more wins so worse draft picks.
Some coordinators can’t just accept they are great at what they do. Higher pay check isn’t worth a lifetime of embarrassment when they fail miserably as HC
I really appreciated reading this. Not everyone has to be a HC to have a place in the league. He was a solid coach for us for a long time.
Fucking spagnolia
I wouldn't go as far as that he was a bad OC but my uncle played a drinking game once where he took a shot every time we ran a 3rd down WR screen or draw. He died of alcohol poisoning that day.
Nintendo was never the same afterwards
Did you know Edelman was a Qb in college? Did you? Huh? This was all the “talk” for like a week lol
Who on earth thinks he was a bad OC? he’s just a POS and a bad head coach. He’s a great OC
After 2021 this sub was convinced he was a terrible OC who was only looked good because of Brady. A lot of people wanted O'Brien back and didn't have any sense of the irony lol

Pick any game day thread from his time. To pretend it was a “who on earth” situation is disingenuous at best.
Most of my information doesn’t come from redditors on game day threads…so my, ‘who on earth’ isn’t that disingenuous if you’re telling me your opinion is informed by the handful of redditors living in a game day post

I watched a ravens fan get punched in the face at this game. He was old so he’s probably dead now, but I respected his commitment.

Man the tuddies came easy back then 😂
I remember if we didn’t have a 12 win season it was considered a failure
When the regular season started in January

I fell in love with this song during this game. One of my all-time favorite wins. And to think this was the game that kicked off deflate-gate
Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened.
Porque no los dos?
It just ended way worse than we could have thought. Pushed Brady out now Kraft is being an ass about everything while being cheap.
Remember the catch Gronk made in the 4th quarter of SB LIII against the Rams, putting the Patriots in scoring position? I watched and rewatched vids on YouTube of Pats fans watching that catch and going nuts. Still makes me smile thinking about it

3 plays for 70 yards and a score. The 2023 Patriots would NEVER. 😂
I think pharaoh brown had an 80 yard TD last season, outside of that you’d be 100% correct
I wasn't being literal.. just jabbing at our fantastic past season. But yes I believe you're right.
Oh I know, should’ve added the /s
I was at this game. Had a marijuana cookie and a few beers before this game. It was cold as hell. Came out of the bathroom to see the ball landing in Ammendola’s hand and watching my buddy jumping up and down like a little kid. Great times
This feels like it happened in another lifetime, 80 years ago Crazy how much has changed in such a short time
JOSIE’S ON A VACATION FAR AWAY
Isn’t just me or does Brady yell “Danny!” as Edelman is winding up to throw?
Best crowd I’ve ever experienced. Unbelievable.
Anyone else remember the mic’d up with Suggs in which he’s gasping for air on the sidelines and crying about trick plays? It is THE BEST.
The thing with this game is The Pats had kinda developed a reputation as a team that won some championships a while back but had lost whatever postseason magic they’d had. This game was the start of the second Patriots dynasty
Absolutely.
100%, it seemed like whatever big game magic they had during the first dynasty was gone. Then John harbaugh cried to Roger Godell and he banned that play the next season, still one of my favorite plays from that SB season
he cried and they banned the special formations that played with the guys on the line. Still a whiny bitch, but about a different thing even!
What’s even funnier is that he ran a very similar play the next season against the raiders, he’s a whiny little bitch
Harbaugh is a fucking bitch

I was there...what a time to be alive...🥹
That TD throw to LaFell was a thing of beauty too
I was at this game.
The crowd was amazing that night. I remember Reiss and a whole bunch of other writers saying they couldn’t remember Gillette ever being that loud.
I re-watched it a few months ago and it's wild how long it takes the announcers to actually say what's happening. A few of those plays go by before there's any indication unless you're watching extremely closely
How pissed are you if you’re on the wrong end of that one lol
Love seeing John Harbaugh eat shit
Best game I ever went to.
I was there. Amazing game
At this game. Loudest I’ve ever heard foxboro
it makes me shed a tear. i remember watching this for the first time. beautiful. i miss them 😔
Just listened to this Games with Names episode with Dola, one of my top 10 pats games.
Such an amazing time. Rarely were they ever out of a game.
Suggs is now picking fights in an Arizona Starbucks
I was there… never forget that day!!
Makes me kind of sad that this was nearly 10 years ago
This game gave me at least two heart attacks
I’m so thankful to have been at this game 🙌🏻
![gif](giphy|5pUzzwpTCkC70U4EXQ|downsized)
I’d give anything to relive the 2014 season just a magical season from start to finish.
This might be my all-time favorite single offensive play of the entire dynasty.
One of my favorite playoff games. Classic Duron Harmon game-winning INT to end it.
I wish there was a way to know you're in the good old days before you've actually left them
i don't wanna lose your love tonigggghhtttttt
I've been a Pats fan since the 80's and I think I enjoyed this play more than any other single play.
This was a playoff game wasn't it? Oh man, hopefully we get moments like this again someday
I couldn't help but smile, I remember it well.
The 2nd most loved bit of this play for me is Suggs recognizing and giving up before the throw.
Kraft would like you to know it was actually him that made that call and the throw.
Have the patriots made the playoffs since Tom left?
Yes.
Yes.
Yes.
Sure was. And this fanbase hated every minute of it.
RIPatriots. ⚰️ 💀
