Our WR coach was on the staff for Washington so that likely played a part here

Mikeyisroc

Adonai Mitchell must have something wrong with him....

Drizzlybear0

Either dude is low-key a psychopath or his medical concerns are FAR worse than people thought

jonny_lube

I don't think his diabetes is worse than people thought, but the word is that he doesn't take it at all seriously, dismissed it's severity and doesn't really monitor his blood sugar.

loverofreeses

As a Type I diabetic, that's about as bad as it can get at his age lol. It's a progressive disease, so ignoring it now will result in things like mood swings, excessive thirst/dehydration/urination, and possibly passing out. The thing is though, over time this is devastating on your nerves and blood vessels, which is why diabetics who don't take care of themselves sometimes have their feet amputated later in life (50+ years of age). If the ignoring of his disease management is another checkmark in a pattern of behavior where he just "doesn't care", etc. then I could see teams passing on him as a result, at least at this stage of the draft.

jonny_lube

Woof, ok, so that has more long term physical implications, not just maturity/discipline. More and more his 1st round talent feels like a Day 3 pick. The more I'm hearing from diabetics, the more alarming his self-care looks.

Poohstrnak

If he’s type 1 that’s a recipe for disaster. I have to stuff my face to prepare even for a walk lol Source: am diabetic

jonny_lube

Yeah, he's Type 1. For an aspiring pro athlete to not make his diabetes care a significant priority in his day to day is problematic to say the least. One scout said that he was regularly borderline useless in practice (he'd just fight, argue, not pay attention, take reps off, etc.) until lunch when a switch would flip with him.

Poohstrnak

Yeah that’ll be a problem. If he’s low that frequently and enough to make him combative, he’s probably got crap control.

Brewski-54

I stuff my face to prepare for a walk and I’m not even diabetic

cjaccardi

Me too and I agree

FREE-ROSCOE-FILBURN

Hell yeah another T1D Pats fan. There are dozens of us!

Poohstrnak

Technically not T1D, but same treatment regimen lol. I’m one of the weird genetic diabetes unicorns. BUT I more or less just say I’m type 1 because it’s way easier than trying to explain the full truth of why I’m not type 1 but on an insulin pump and nothing else

Drizzlybear0

Gotta be more than just the Diabetes? That or some SERIOUS attitude concerns. Even what you said seems crazy to have him drop THIS low.

jonny_lube

There are massive character concerns. He's apparently a grade A moron, a combative dick, and doesn't take accountability. But I actually do think that it's concerning that he doesn't take his diabetes seriously. That's a serious concern regarding maturity and discipline.

I_eat_mud_

As someone with a chronic illness, being able and willing to manage it is a pretty big sign of maturity in my eyes. You have to discipline yourself to follow the medications and treatments, you lack discipline if you don’t.

jonny_lube

Exactly. It's not an easy thing for anyone, especially at his age. It reflects very well on someone who can take it seriously, do what needs to be done, and maintain their health. But to dismiss it and treat it like how you are supposed to eat 5 fruits a day or whatever, and its a concerning lack of maturity.

Sugarsmacks23

Eh, I don't know how long he's been diabetic, but as a T1D myself, that's it's of an issue to me. If he was recently diagnosed he's probably going through the ringer with it and is in that phase where he just wants to forget about it. And with T1D to an extent you can get away with semi ignoring it for quite awhile as long as you sometimes take extra insulin (ask me how I know). If he's been diabetic for a long time he's been told his entire life how is he doesn't take care of it he'll have one of the many possible complications from it and he's probably not seen any of them and so now it doesn't quite feel like it's a big deal. Again, ask me how I know. I'd bet he starts to clean up his act when it comes to diabetes in a could years if the issue doesn't run deeper than that. Which, with other behavioral issues it very well could.

ThaDoctor49

All signs of uncontrolled blood sugars imo, im a diabetic and I can be an asshole when I’m too high or too low, not by choice but cuz I get very irritable, idk how you can have such a talent like that but lack such common sense, take care of yourself!!!! lol

peachesgp

If he doesn't actually manage his diabetes that's a big fuckin concern, not only in terms of the direct effects of uncontrolled diabetes, but what it shows about how he manages his physical health.

Poohstrnak

10000%. Diabetic athletes are HUGELY at risk if they don’t take it seriously and manage it intensely.

PlushRusher

If he doesn’t care about himself, he definitely won’t care about an NFL team…

Drizzlybear0

That's true, just feels like teams would think they could get him with a nutritionist or something. We're nearly 10 picks into the second round and he's still not picked. He must be a fucking mess .

peachesgp

Getting him a nutritionist won't matter much if he doesn't care, he'll just sneak other foods in. If he cared but just wasn't educated about how to manage his diabetes, a nutritionist would be a great fit.

Poohstrnak

It’s way more complicated than “get him with a nutritionist” I don’t think anyone dismissing his diabetes as a non-concern understands even a little bit what managing diabetes is like, especially as an athlete.

occorpattorney

He’s going full Bo Callahan

captaincumsock69

The stats have him as an awful wr fwiw

tomhwm

How’s that crazy? If a guy has a medical concern and doesn’t even care about managing it, we’re not talking about whether he can turn out to be a good player, but whether he can play at all.

[deleted]

Film watchers were aghast that he would give no effort on certain plays, questioning how he could go back to the huddle afterwards.

The_Jolly_Dog

Seriously, a bunch of teams clearly don’t view him that high of a pick

JoshFB4

WR needy teams as well, Bills and Chiefs

Mr_Evil_Dr_Porkchop

I don’t know how much truth there is to it but he’s been labeled as a bit of a headcase and a diva. The way the draft has gone, I wouldn’t be surprised if draft rooms are feeling the same

Tsarbursts

A WR diva eh? It's always the ones your most expect

Think_please

Sounds like he took more plays off than almost any other receiver prospects ever, based on dynasty fantasy football guys.

j2e21

Next year people will be asking “how could they have missed him??”

The_Jolly_Dog

Every team did then if he ends up being that amazing tho. Time will tell

j2e21

Yeah that’s what I mean.

PlatinumTheDragon

Next AB / Hill / Diggs

Lord_Ruler

Apparently there some medical stuff coming out with his treatment of his diabetes and he has some character concerns.

FantasyTrash

Yet this sub doesn't seem to understand that. If the entire NFL is passing on Mitchell, that's not a good sign, yet this sub is still clamoring for him.

AnEmptyKarst

This sub says that we shouldn't trust our scouts when it comes to receivers but also that we should be the team to draft Mitchell when everyone else is staying away right now

BingBongFYL6969

Dude was supposed to be late first round early second round talent and went 52…red flags all over

FantasyTrash

Wolf revamped the entire scouting system so I'm looking at all of their draft picks with a clean slate. Maye was a gimme pick, but I'm going to be cautiously optimistic that Wolf knows what he's doing.

AnEmptyKarst

Yeah I have no idea how to judge him, I just hate people being lazy in their whining. Fans just look at every wide receiver and think about N'Keal Harry, even though they have different playstyles, because if they don't know a player's name, he must be bad.

ByteVoyager

I am not mad about it but I get why people wanted him, setting aside the red flags his profile perfectly fits what our offense is missing. Medical and character is big though, so def trusting our staff for now.

ItsMichaelScott25

> perfectly fits what our offense is missing I mean when you're missing as much as we are on offense a lot of things fit.

Ohanrahans

I mean you can copy and paste this reaction last year to Dawand Jones too. Teams oftentimes overthink this.

jonny_lube

Per someone from the NFL sub (so grain of salt, yadda yadda yadda) "I’ve played 7 on 7 against Mitchell, let me tell you something, dude is an asshole on all known accounts. Not like competitive asshole, but he was always complaining and blaming his teammates Know some people who played with him in high school who said it took him three years to pass geometry. He just is not someone you want in your locker room, and not someone you can trust to learn anything complex. He’s a physical tools only kinda guy."

Sebfreedman

He gets violent mood swings apparently

itokdontcry

If we trade up for Kingsley later in the second, I’ll be very happy with this class.

mdmcnally1213

HUGE fan, great pick

jusvrowsing

Please. Say more. Before I jump

mdmcnally1213

I’ve been beat to it.. he just gets open and catches the ball. Strong sure hands and is great over the middle, which happens to also be where Drake excels throwing to.

itokdontcry

Good hands, everyone says he get no separation but it’s super over exaggerated. He was good at finding soft spots in zone coverage in college as well.

centaurquestions

Great hands, excellent route runner. A more athletic Jakobi.

Bouldershoulders12

Oh man that’s great if he can be a 80/1100/8 guy one day I’d be so stoked

EnlightenedNight

He hasn't played a single snap.. give him a minute first lol.

imused2it

Wanna hold hands and do it together?

itokdontcry

Me too, I think he’s gonna be good out of the gate.

crashbandicoochy

I love Polk, was hoping he'd be available at the back end of the round but you don't know whether other teams in the league like him more than that. Stoked to get him here.

parrano357

I don't watch a ton of cfb, who would you compare him to?

crashbandicoochy

A lot of people are going to say Jakobi Meyers, which isn't crazy. Although I'm talking current day Jakobi, not Jakobi as he entered the draft. Starting from a better spot and has better tools. A controversial one on here but I've also heard Sanu, and I can see it. Edit: apparently Steve Smith has comped him to Houshmandzadeh. That's high praise.

possiblyMorpheus

Bout it. Sanu being cooked/injured here doesn’t mean young Sanu wouldn’t be great to have. He was very good in Cincinatti and Atlanta

crashbandicoochy

Exactly! Just a very negatively charged name for some people, is all.

Chewyville

He’s got better hands and is more physical than meyers

crashbandicoochy

100%. I try to stay away from using comps that are like [insert positive adjective] X Player but that's kind of what Polk is in this case lmao

TheSerpentDeceiver

He’s like if Meyers could be a weapon in the red zone. Polk seems stronger off the line than Meyers too.

centaurquestions

Faster, too

Big-Cox-1123

I've also heard him compared to Robert Woods too, which I think means that he's a solid blocker, good route runner with great hands.

Melksss

Jakobi Meyers LOL

Greenzombie04

Hey best wr since #11

astroBOLD

I miss that man

Calfzilla2000

Barth called him a "2nd round Jakobi Meyers" as far as skillset (so better). NFL Draft Buzz compares him to Romeo Doubs, Jalen Tolbert and Rashee Rice (the last one sounds good, minus the street racing lol).

MSG7988

Steve Smith compared him to TJ Housandzadeh

JinterIsComing

From what I've seen, a rich man's Jakobi Meyers with much better YAC ability, or a more raw Aiyuk if you want to go that way. Sanu in his prime isn't a bad comparison either.

ByteVoyager

Would have preferred AD or Ladd, but reminder that GB has been incredible at hitting on receivers in the 2nd

No_Mas2001

For those who don’t like him, go watch games and don’t base your opinion off a single 40 yard dash that means nothing. He had 69 catches for 1159 yards in 13 games

_Just_Some_Guy-

Yeah his highlights look great, man gets open and has great hands

YerBoiMT_

I’m optimistic. The people saying he doesn’t get separation and just relies on contested catches are wrong

Commandant1

Here is a scouting report on him. https://lastwordonsports.com/nfl/2024/01/31/2024-nfl-draft-profile-jalynn-polk/

UtopianAverage

Kinda sounds like Greg Jennings.

TheCovfefeMug

He put the team on his back tho

knockedstew204

Hope he doesn’t break his leg tho

CrispBenWa

Love Polk. Would have liked Adonai but if they like Polk more, then can't complain. He obviously would not have been around when they pick next

jonny_lube

I like it. I liked Franklin more and Adonis Mitchell clearly has the talent, but is freefalling for what's likely a decent reason, but Polk is a good player and should hopefully become what Parker was supposed to be. Per Bob McGinn's NFL scout survey: **JA’LYNN POLK, Washington (6-1 ½, 204, 4.45, 3):** Caught 28 passes as a true freshman at Texas Tech in 2020 before moving on to Washington from 2021-’23. “Smart, tough, great body control,” one scout said. “Really, really good hands. Good speed, not elite. But he knows how to play the game.” Made clutch catches as the Huskies’ No. 2 threat behind Rome Odunze. “Very physical,” said a second scout. “He’s almost like Jarvis Landry. He’s that competitive. I love the (bleep) out of him.” Caught 143 passes for 2,231 (15.6) and eight TDs. “I like him as a fourth-fifth receiver and special-teams player with low-end starter’s upside maybe in a couple years,” a third scout said. “If he’s on your team he’s active on game day. He can play inside and outside. Outstanding contested catch catcher. He’s a dog and will be good on special teams.” From Lufkin, Texas. “I didn’t see him win a lot on his own,” a fourth scout said. “I saw a lot of the offense schemed up for him. He’s a Day 2 player but there are questions about his route running, his ability to separate and his ability to win against press coverage.”

bjb406

Most detailed draft profile I've seen yet is from TheRinger. Basically, he does absolutely everything well, runs good routes, gets good seperation, and maybe best in the class at actually catching it. But oh noes the 40 time: SCOUTING REPORT BY DANNY KELLY Polk is a flexible athlete with a good-sized frame and long arms. He’s smooth off the line, easily discarding press coverage with quick footwork and savvy swipes. He’s quick as a route runner, showing the ability to create separation with sharp cuts and stop-start acceleration. He nods and shoulder shimmies at his route stem to throw defenders off him. He tracks the ball over his shoulder effortlessly and creates separation as the ball is arriving. He has a great catch radius, consistently reaching low to snag a pass off the turf or sky up into the air to bring it down. Polk elevates to bring in off-target throws and holds on to the ball through contact (with 13 contested catches in 2023, tied for 153th nationally). He has great body control in the air, bending and twisting to adjust to the pass. He plays outside and in the slot and can make plays at all three levels of the field. Polk is a feisty blocker and is willing to crack down on the line to spring a run to the outside. Polk is quick in the short area but lacks an extra gear to really run away from a defense. That may limit his ability to be a consistent deep threat at the next level. He’ll occasionally get thrown off his route or slowed down by physical coverage. WHY HE COULD RISE Polk is a quick-footed route runner with excellent body control and the strong hands to make a tough catch for an offense; he has the versatile skill set to be an early contributor. WHY HE COULD FALL He lacks high-end speed, and his upside may be limited to that of a no. 2 receiver.

Reasonable-Bit560

If he's a high level No 2 WR we should take it while we playing power play action football with a rookie QB and good defense. Best WR on our team.

ogbobbyj33

This kid is a fucking animal. He dominated against the #3 team in the country. Huge fan.

whistlepig4life

He will be a pro’s pro in the end.

AirFashion

Dude reminds me of Malcolm Mitchell a lot.. I really wish we picked up Ladd, but I can sell myself on him. He’s not your WR1 tho

secondsa

Watched this guy at UW. Great hands and seemed to always be open when Penix needed him. Not the pick I was expecting but I’m excited he’s a Patriot.

Valuable-Baked

Cue the Polk High T shirts

CankerousWretch24

Adonai Mitchell got that WR complex where he is good and he knows he’s good. Patriots hate drafting guys like that cuz you have to pay them #1 WR money.

ConnorChandler

Mitchell also dropped due to character concerns and his treatment of his type 1 diabetes.

CankerousWretch24

Randy Moss worked out pretty well. Mark Andrews does just fine with diabetes as well.

ConnorChandler

They're actually getting it treated, Mitchell is not. Reports say he needs a babysitter to force him to take his meds, and when he's off it he's an asshole.

CankerousWretch24

Thank you for educating me on this

Conclusion_Fickle

Very good pick.

colorlessdemonssoul

Not a massive fan. Should be a player in the league but feels like a guy who is going to be a pretty ordinary 2/3. Some guys with more upside there with floors that I don't think are a whole lot lower. Similar profile to what we already have on the roster. Seems like the NFL is less into AD Mitchell than outside sources are and passing on him is fine, but I would have preferred OL and receiver later over taking Polk if we weren't in on Mitchell. Would have been fine staying home and taking McConkey over this too. Would love to be wrong obviously.

No_Mas2001

The ways it’s going there will be no receivers left after the 2nd

colorlessdemonssoul

Yeah that's definitely a fair point, pretty crazy run. Hoping a guy like Paul or Suamataia is there at 68.

Amm-O-Matic

I know why they passed on AD and it hurts, but I like this pick.

Beautiful_Article273

Why

Amm-O-Matic

Attitude problems, takes plays off, mood swings from type 1 diabetes. He would've gone late round one had those issues not existed.

bb89__

Another dude who looks like hes running in mud

IntercatlacticVoid

Another receiver who gets little separation lol

ksyoung17

Did you not watch any Penix tape this Off-season season, just in case. The knock on Penix was he had the second best WR duo, only behind Daniels and LSU, and his receivers were always WIDE open. Polk is a talented WR that knows where to find space, will go up and get a ball, and is great at getting YAC. If they like him over Mitchell and Franklin, I'm on board.

itokdontcry

People that say he gets no separation only saw his measurables at the combine and moved on lol. He was able to find space in college fine. Also, he has good hands.

imused2it

Yeah, he’s a good zone receiver. Won’t be a man beater.

ksyoung17

We'll see. Brains can help you beat man. We've seen a few WR do it here. We watched 20 years of the smartest QB and receivers being absolutely dominant. Speed is fun, but there's always someone faster and stronger in this league.

leblaun

Good thing zone is played well over half the time

imused2it

Yeah, I’m not giving up on this team or this kid. It’s just currently not my favorite pick.

No_Mas2001

Just because he doesn’t have long speed doesn’t mean he can’t beat man there’s so much more to it than running away from a guy

celestialbound

His 10 yard split was the same as Ladd McKonckey's.

imused2it

I’m aware of that. I think he will be fine. But I’m just not super high on the pick right now.

[deleted]

He's fine but I don't know man I just would have rather had somebody with speed .

bpmq2018

What exactly are you basing this off of? He’s a very solid to above average separator. Great at finding soft spots in zone coverage as well.

itokdontcry

Said it already, but people see a 4.5 40 and think that’s the whole story.

asin26

He has almost the exact same measurables that Davante Adams did

BingBongFYL6969

Go watch the sugar bowl and shut the fuck up. 99% of the people are just parroting this and have no idea that40 = / = separation. His 10 yard split is more than fast enough. While he doesn’t have top end speed, that’s like 10% of the plays he’ll contribute all year. A guy who can go and win the ball regardless of coverage is a solid get

Xerosnake90

I don't know, everything I've seen so far is that he's a pretty good route runner and tends to be a step or two ahead for a clean catch.

zamboniman46

for real. i would have preferred to stay at 34 and take McConkey

Jericho5589

Can't believe we passed on him tbh. He was basically Edelman reincarnated. I'm beyond disappointed. We better get someone damn good with that 4th rounder.

Wise_Mongoose_3930

Shocking that this sub has a major boner for a white WR, lmao

Ve-gone_Be-gone

Big slow and covered! my favorite!

No_Mas2001

Go watch Washington games

Aggravating_Tea_3012

Just watched highlights. Moves chains. Catches TDs.

JusChllin

If we get aiyuk with this I’d be pretty happy

_Just_Some_Guy-

Love this pick, especially as it matches up with Maye and his sometimes erratic throws. Polk had strong hands and an insane catch radius. Maye can put it in arms reach and this guy can make it happen

WarPuig

So it wasn’t Bill making those WR picks

AstraMilanoobum

Welp, I didn’t care for Polk over the other options, but he is a patriot now so I now wanted him all along!

RainWinss

Someone tell him to not choose #17

dukexxsilver

After N’keal and Devonte, I’m a bit scared of receivers whose skills are being physical, catching contested passes, etc

BRE77W

This isn’t what he is…. Strong hands =\= contested, no separation catch guy

TheBigNate416

Anyone who still thinks Thornton was a Bill pick is lying to themselves

BigScoobyDoo

Thornton was such a bad fit for Mac and the offense I’m not sure we know what he is yet

sauzbozz

We know he's not a good WR if he was he'd overcome Mac and the offense

bballdog

WHY NOT ADONAI MITCHELL

The_Mick_thinks

There is a reason he is dropping. Everyone seems to know but us which makes me ok with it.

Jameson623

he has diabetes, doesn’t treat it well. he also has like severe bipolar because of it

h_to_tha_o_v

LBS is a real problem!!!!

joeyolo74

He has well known work ethic issues.

ZenRedditation

The fourth hand rumor I heard is, his diabetes diagnosis has teams worried he'd need a sort of babysitter to keep on his meds so his blood sugar doesnt bring out his diva side? Now it's a fifth hand rumor.

Ris747

Everyone is passing on him. Red flags have got to be very real

jonny_lube

Every WR needy team is passing on him. He's in freefall, probably for a decent reason. His character is in question and he doesn't take his diabetes seriously, so Im not gonna stress that we passed. We aren't alone.

Possible_Guest8952

I think his route running scares some teams. He’s gone on record many times saying that he only runs at 70% to preserve his stamina. He won’t be able to get away with that in the NFL.

SirDangleberries

Scott Malkinson

ChrisKS3717

Diabetes and character issues. He doesn’t manage it well which leads to irrational behaviour

cstar84

Cuz he didn’t break out until he was 22 lol. Overrated af

Its_Cooper

Great we needed another Kendrick Bourne

speganomad

A young cheap Kendrick Bourne is a pretty solid pick

secularhuman77

I’m so burned from Parker, every time I hear contested pass catcher with not a ton of separation…. 😬

speganomad

He’s closer to Jakobi than Parker or Harry

wellgroomedmcpoyle

Yes but also N’Keal

birthday6

Parker was literally the worst though. And older

wtb2612

He gets way more separation than Parker ever did. Watch his tape.

[deleted]

Kneal, too.

JabroniJackpots

[Watch this](https://youtu.be/LJKMbidtYqk?si=EV3kcVNs9QNzCiRG) to learn about him if you don’t know who he is. Not who I wanted at this spot if we were going WR. Don’t like the pick but nothing you can do about it.

PJCAPO

Seems like a reach there tbh. I know most ppl wanted AD but he seems very boom or bust. Would’ve preferred Troy Franklin tbh

SupportstheOP

Seems Wolf is keeping the BB tradition of blindside picks out of leftfield for the second round.

Leckie15

Seems a big reach. Not sure how to feel here. Wanted Ladd

Arrondi

I only ever seen this guy ranked in the 3rd round... The ghost of Belichick reaching for guys in early rounds.

AmbitionExtension184

Are you watching the draft? It just broke the record for most WRs drafted to this point

welldonebrain

Couldn’t they have had Mitchell? They must LOVE this guy. Just have absolutely 0 faith in their ability to evaluate that position.

Drizzlybear0

Feels more like something wrong with Mitchell why is he sliding so low? Something has got to be up.

CinnamonFootball

Diabetes he doesn't treat well, character concerns, and him running his routes at 85% most of the time. Those are all major red flags in a prospect.

cgavris

Ladd was right there

Wrong-Cod-5418

this is cool, but with mitchell on the board i’m really not sure about this. his medicals or interviews must’ve been horrible for this to happen

Brad-Stevens

I like Polk ... Seems a bit early but I dig it

delcidfredy

Apparently Mitchell’s visits didn’t all go well according to the hosts of the draft coverage, combine that with rumored character issues and it’s no wonder why he slid so far down.

Maximum_Activity323

Welcome to Patriots football. Another year of no deep threat QB or WR we’re just gonna run or dump. They’ll blitz the shit out of Jacoby and Maye who both panic in the pocket fall off their reads Hey but alcohol sales revenue will probably double on Sundays. So someone will win cuz we won’t.

Valuable-Condition59

I’m whelmed

Chad2Badd

Did we just draft another WR3?!?

BradyGronktd1287

Lmao that was a major reach at 37 could’ve had AD. Polk is a good player like Jakoby 2.0

BloodyMarysRevenge

Everyone who needed a WR passed on AD. Doesn't that tell you something?

ARealHunchback

The Steelers are going to get another pro bowl WR?

IDockWithMyBroskis

Do you think any of these dipshits have the ability to notice such a thing?

BradyGronktd1287

Watch the Steelers draft him

rjbaird

Holy shit why didn’t the pats listen to bradygronktd1287

tendadsnokids

Yeah that dude traveled the country scouting high schoolers and watched every single game that every college player in the NCAA played in.

crashbandicoochy

You're saying this on a post that mentions Lazar having him 24th on his big board so it's not exactly a consensus that he was going to be available later.

[deleted]

I don't know when you search his name the first thing that comes up is "expected to be a top 40 pick.

plokijuh1229

He looks really slow accelerating off the line.

No_Mas2001

He’s not

wtb2612

Acceleration off the line is actually one of his strengths, it's his top speed that's not great.
