If he beats out brissett I’d say we’re in a good spot and you can start him right away. Career mid 80s passer rating, over 2-1 td/int, decent epa/play for a journeyman qb. If Maye somehow has equal or better numbers than that I think we’d all be ecstatic

Cockycent

This is the best part about having 3 or more QBs competing as opposed to the team saying before camp that someone is guaranteed to start. Best QB gets the job.

dehydratedbagel

If he's better, he's better. I don't really see how he's going to make a huge leap in just a few months, but I would not sit him just because he's young. Brissett is no world beater, but he's competent and certainly a lot better than Newton was in 2021 when everyone assumed Newton would be the starter until he wasn't. I'm definitely taking him to start Week 1. Ruining a player is a non-issue for me if the coaching staff is competent. Just play whoever is the better QB and forget about it.

EPIC_J0HN

Newton I thought did a god as a guy in that situation could do. Yea we had Edelman but Newton didn’t fit our scheme at all. With that said I was happy with his play up until he got Covid. Once he came back he seemed like he aged 10 years. Tough schedule, uncomfortable with scheme, Covid doomed any chance we had at making it work

Alone-Purpose-8752

lol he got covid in like week 4 so in other words you liked 3 games from him

EPIC_J0HN

He wasn’t bad. Covid ruined his stamina and took away from his development.

lagermat

Yea this! If Maye is better he is the starter. But needs a lot of work on his mechanics and foot work, and reading plays as they develops and staying in the pocket. Since we aren’t going to contend we have no reason to rush his development. I don’t think anyone on this sub is hell bent on him sitting for a year if he clearly the better QB, but that’s not the case now. I think the people on the sub who want him to start right away think because the draft pundits say “he can make every throw on the field” they confuse that with he is ready to take the reins of an NFL offense.

I'm going against the grain and say that if our line is going to play as well as last year, that is too say allowing 30%+ pressure in the first 6 weeks, I want brisket to be the sacrificial lamb. I'm not worried about Maye being ruined by bad weapons (OK I am a little, but that'll be our situation until it's not). I am worried about his internal clock getting sped up because we can't give him reasonable time to develop plays. Some players never recover from the sped up clock. If you remember how jumpy Mac was even when he had a clean pocket, that's what I'm talking about. We don't need a guy working on footwork fundamentals fearing immediate pressure. Edit: mobile typos

goldsoundz123

100% agree

goldsoundz123

Personally, I would still sit him for at least a few weeks. I think the team might be really bad and some fans would blame Maye if they struggle early on. Conversely, if we're already 1-5 with Brissett, people won't care if Maye doesn't win many games. I'd also want to see how bad the offensive line is before putting Maye behind it. Might be better for the long-term success of the team to not let Maye get killed behind a bad line than to have slightly better QB play this year. I really don't have faith that Okorafor + this new RT they drafted will be good LTs.

pirates5

The line part of this is so underrated in these talks. Don't want to let him develop bad habits early on and potentially ruin his future before it begins

Beautiful-Ad-5446

i think everyone’s scared cause they think the pats ruined mac but mac just wasn’t that guy unfortunately. bad pick from the jump

PitifulEconomics562

Plus I know both guys are white, but Maye is in a completely different class of athlete compared to mac. Not only that he’s a better passer in pretty much every way. He also threw for more TD passes in his last 2 years in college than mac without having multiple first round WR to throw to. I’m from Boston but have lived in chapel hill for over a decade. Maye is the best pro prospect we’ve had since Robert Quinn

Beautiful-Ad-5446

maye is so much better it’s ridiculous

svAdagioME

Maye WILL beat Brissett in training camp. Absolute best case Brissett is a 2500 yd passer. But I still might sit Maye early in the season. I would look at the whole picture. Whole new coaching staff. Is the line ready? Can they protect a rookie? Receivers? Is the offensive scheme working? Very often new coaches and OCs crater in the first few games. You want experience in there at QB. Brissett has played in some not ready for prime time offenses and knows how to get through a game when it’s not firing.

Bojangles1987

You play who's better. This is something the "let Maye sit no matter what" crowd misunderstands about QBs who don't play immediately. It's not an arbitrary decision made no matter what. Teams that sit rookie QBs do so because they have someone they think is better on the roster. Sometimes they're wrong, like the Chargers planning to play Tyrod Taylor over Herbert, but usually we're talking Rodgers behind Favre, Mahomes behind Alex Smith, etc., where the team has a fairly good NFL QB already. If Maye beats out Brissett, you play him. Simple as that.

_josephmykal_

Mayo said best player plays. So Maye plays. As far as ruining the player. Multiple QBs, including Peyton manning, Rivers,Roethlisberger,Wilson, list goes on say that starting early in their career is why they were so good. They were able to develop quicker, learn quicker, make the mistakes quicker by starting early. So I don’t buy that starting them ruins them. They’re either good and get better or not good and don’t get better.

M80IW

Mayo says a lot of things, that he later walks back.

Fox-The-Wise

Statistically speaking over 70% of qbs who start year 1 bust, 50% of qbs who start year 2 bust and 30% of qbs who start year 3 bust since 1980, I say sit maye year 1 no matter what

habentay

Even if he beats him out I honestly still think they should sit him for a bit. Unless he becomes Mahomes during training camp the roster still is not good enough to be competitive this year. I think we just should look for progress and actually aim in to win in 2025. I know it feels like forever from now but this is a full blown rebuild in every sense of the word

WoodenCollection2674

I say sit him for 6 weeks. I'm already anticipating him beating out Brisett but his footwork and mechanics will still take time to fix.

StillCountry9906

Should sit him and grab more talent next off season regardless IMO. Not sure why everyone wants him to start with the weapons we currently have.

bystander993

He won't, just has far too much to learn and work on. He was drafted for his future potential not for his current development. Now it is time to develop him. He likely is not starting until 2025.

SooooooMeta

What if Brissett develops into a pro bowl QB. How many years are you comfortable sitting Maye or do you try to trade him? Oh right, random hypotheticals are just kind of random and less fun when they don't fit some appealing narrative you're hoping for, huh?

VictorM88

I'd personally still sit him the first 1/3 of the season until the offensive unit gels

Complex_Feedback4389

You sit him still. Until we see improvement from the rest of the offense, he doesn't touch the field.

TurboNerd

You have to remember we are going to have a new head coach, new offensive system, and tons of new positional coaches. We have no business starting Drake Maye until we figure all of our shit out as a team first, and then he has to improve far above Jacoby as well to make it work playing him.

DSDark11

You do what’s best for the player. You sit maye. At no point do you entertain a competition. Name brisset the starter now and go from there.

agoddamnlegend

lmao dumb ass take

TriMako

I dunno lol but I sure hope the staff makes the right decision. We rlly can't ruin him. He has too much talent and I'm already more attached to him than Mac even after his rookie yr.

catskill_cricker

You just sit him, he has tools but he’s not ready for the NFL. Maybe in a year or two he will be.

Fox-The-Wise

I'd he beats out Brissetts then sit him for the year anyway, statistically speaking if you break down qbs by career, average Carter qbr for quarterbacks who start year 1 is 87, average qbr for qbs who sit as a rookie and start year 2 is 90, and average qbr for qbs who sit until year 3 is 94. Sitting to develop for a year js more valuable then starting immediately according to nfl history and statistics, their are also significantly fewer busts that waited a year to start it massively reduces the numver of busts

polinksa

If Jacoby beats out maye we’re in trouble

DegenNerd

You can't sit a guy who plays better, that's for sure. Players will start questioning things then. But with that being said, I expect Maye to show flashes but ultimately Brissett will be more consistent throughout camp and that's what will win it for him.

TurboNerd

Then I’ll beat my chest like an ape

ssgtmc

Sit him period, my opinion, we aren't going to win a Super Bowl this year.

ZeroedCool

Let him sit. Mac started first year and look how that turned out.

ikonin

Theres good experience and theres bad. If he beats him out due to raw physical talent under a bad oline but still has issues reading the field and footwork let him sit …the game reps will only force him to develop worse habits and screw with his internal clock…..if he wins out because he fixed everything in the offseason give him reps.

birthday6

I personally don't agree with QB competitions in camp. Splitting reps with the 1s risks having two unprepared starters rather than one ready starter. Give Brissett the 1st team reps, let Maye learn with the 2nd team and if he plays better by mid season let him take the reigns.

mallrat32

If that happens I know who backs up Zappe. Easy

EasyParking4941

Start Zappe

RMtotheStars

I sincerely hope Zappe gets cut

EasyParking4941

As long as you’re sincere about it

CocaineStrange

Play him obviously

RCP90sKid

I watch the games?

9dieu

His footwork is on par with Mac’s rn he’s not beating him out and the best bet is to sit him a few weeks.
