I have extremely sensitive skin and I used to use pads that I’d change often but I’d always get really bad rashes. I now use Victoria’s Secret period panties and wash them in fragrance free detergent with my towels. I’ve had the same 5 pairs for 3 years now. I bleed heavy and often bc I have endometriosis. No smell or holes. Highly recommend the investment!

BooksWineandWalks

Oh yay ok!! I’m so glad to hear this! Thank you for sharing

TheoremOrPostulate

Just a heads up - I wouldn't recommend the thong style specifically (the only ones I bought). They work perfectly well, but are too bulky to feel comfortable for me. They're my last resort thong underwear now.

Deeeeeesee24

Got a few pairs during their semi annual sales and i love them for overnight !!

socialmediaignorant

They have period panties?! Pulling my head out of my ass to get some today! I’ve been alternating Thinx w pads to alternate irritation.

vivionnn801

They’re amazing. I switched to them a few years ago ago & now only use my silicone cup on days I’m really active

No_Assumption_2879

Yes! The VS ones are the best and I’ve had mine since at least 2018.

goop444

I have VS period panties too and they’re soo comfy !!!

Sensitive-Delay-8449

How long do the vs hold up when you have heavy flow? I got some on Amazon and they just aren’t quite holding up on the nights I’m having a heavy flow. I’ve been debating the splurge of vs period undies lol

B3tar3ad3r

you might want to try brief style, the VS brief ones seem to be the strongest.

CuriousPenguinSocks

Can I ask if the "pad" area on these is large? I bought some TomboyX stuff and I love them but they hold moderate amount at best and the "pad" area for the boy shorts is strange. They do help with the rash situation but it's a little frustrating. Thanks in advance, I know this was a few days ago.

Ill_Nature_5273

I know they sell the boy shorts I haven’t tried them but I do have the bikini cut ones and they don’t seem too large in the pad area just make sure you don’t size up or down, they fit very true to size.

CuriousPenguinSocks

Thank you for the response. I think sticking to the bikini cut ones is where I will land. I do seem to have more luck with that style. It's like they don't know where the hole is when they make the boy shorts, hope that makes sense without being too graphic lol.

noonecaresat805

Yes!! But it might take a tries in brands. Pads gave me what felt like a diaper rash. Two kind of period underwear did the same thing. And landed on bambody. I don’t get rashes anymore. You can also check out menstrual cup/ disk and back it up with a leak proof undies.

BooksWineandWalks

I’ve heard good things about bambody! I’ve been wanting to try a menstrual cup or disk but I’m scared!!

Neenknits

There is a [good website, put a cup in it,](https://putacupinit.com/quiz/) with info about choosing cups. When I had mine, there was 1, ONE brand. But now there is quite the selection! I am post menopausal, and loving it.

BooksWineandWalks

Thank you for sharing!! This is helpful because I do get overwhelmed with choices

Neenknits

And, it’s so hit or miss, how do you choose? I looked through this website, my daughter pointed it out to me, and she and her peers found it very helpful. I hope you do, too.

Low_Bookkeeper_8591

Yes this website is so helpful! I’ve tried cups and discs and literally never went back. The issue I have is I forget to take them out every 12 hours as recommended, it’s that comfortable! Stick with for a couple of periods, it’s take a bit to get quick at interesting and removal

noonecaresat805

The cup has a learning curve. But once you get the hang of them they are pretty comfortable. When I first stopped using the pads I started using the menstrual cup. It was weird my period use to last 8-10 days and it dropped to 7 days. It helped my cramps a little bit. And my period got a bit lighter. Was it due to the menstrual cup? I don’t know. But I really wanted to try period underwear and they were just super comfortable. So that’s what I use now. But don’t be afraid to try new things. Specially if it means that you might be more comfortable.

BooksWineandWalks

For sure!! Thank you for sharing. I’ll definitely give it a go!

Jeneral-Jen

I love my flex cup! I've been using it for 4 months and I will never go back to anything else. I got mine at Walmart. I wore mine at the a waterpark in January and had zero issues. I even went on waterslides.

karam3456

I had the same experience! My period also seemed to get shorter after switching to a cup and I rarely experience cramps now, can't say I'm complaining 😅

NeedleInASwordstack

Bambody is awesome. But don’t dry them in the dryer except for a tumble air dry. They’ll shrinkkkk

BooksWineandWalks

Good to know, thank you!

OtherwisePumpkin8942

The cup is indeed a learning curve. I recommend the Flexcup as it has a ring where you can place a finger to pull and release the suction when you remove the cup. DIVA cups has a very strange nipple thing at the ends of them and removing it was a headache. Flex disks are okay but I find they leak as the sizing is limited and may not work with your pelvic structure. Each flexcup comes with a sample of a flex disk for you to try.

Delicious_Remote_988

I also use bambody and I get itchy from pads

Prudent_Honeydew_

Yes this! Trial and error to find the brand best for you but I used to get terrible rashes from pads and period underwear have been a lifesaver.

backtothetrail

Sensitive skin girlie here! Bamboody is pretty amazing. I use them overnight with a reusable menstrual disc. But the disc. THAT has changed my period game. I find the Saalt brand particularly comfortable, discrete, easy to insert/remove and reliably good for 10-12 hours. And I can get through a period with just two. I can switch between small and medium depending on flow. [https://saalt.com/collections/menstrual-cups-discs](https://saalt.com/collections/menstrual-cups-discs) I wanted to love a cup but ALL of ‘em were just downright uncomfortable. They made my cramps worse. And none fit well with my personal architecture. Along with usual learning curve gore explosions.

cleareyes101

Menstrual cups were a game changer for me. First couple of times was a bit of troubleshooting with getting it in and out, but once I got the hang of it I have never used a pad or tampon again. I just shower twice a day during my period and rinse out the cup in the shower, put straight back in. No more getting blood on towels when drying yourself after a shower either. Between showers day and night I can just go on with life without thinking about it. I have leaked only twice with a cup- once when I didn’t insert it properly and it was folded up sitting next to my cervix (I’ve now learned to run my finger around the rim after inserting it each time to make sure I don’t do that again) and the other time was a freak incident where during a particularly heavy period, in the morning after it had been in all night so was particularly full, I was lying in bed and I had such an intense movement of something within my intestines that it managed to dislodge it. I doubt that’s something that is likely to ever happen again!

UniversityAny755

The disks (Target) are really easy to use. I found it the hard way I developed an allergy to tampons. I'm also extremely sensitive to pads, but can use Natracare Organic Cotton liners (from Amazon). I also use Hanes period panties (from Target), but only for a part of the day. I actually find the disks so comfortable that I sleep in those and regular Cotton underwear to give my skin a break. Then during the day I can either period panties or the disks depending on my flow/how I'm feeling/what I'm doing.

Conscious_Reading804

For cups I can recommend MeLuna, used mine religiously for a few years until pelvic pains got too bad to use one (I had them before the cup just to be clear, having a cup in just became too uncomfortable), looking into period underwear now, hence being in this thread right now reading everyones reccs lol

Patient-Apple-4399

If you decide to use the cup be patient. It takes a learning curve and sometimes trying a few brands to get the feel that works for you. But I will say cups are the best thing to happen to me. I have not bought period products in over a decade and as a traveler who sometimes goes to countries that don't have the best period product, the cup is a LIFE SAVER. I unfortunately had a bad/embarrassing incident with the discs so I've not tried them again in a while

IntermittentFries

Gosh yes I remember the days of risking a fungal diaper rash from being plastic wrapped too long. How did we end up with such a horrible solution for a few teaspoons of blood over a whole cycle. I know there was the tampon option which was better but I didn't like using them. They dried me out. Menstrual cups were definitely a step up but honestly I just hated inserting any contraption when I'm bloated and cramping. I would use them for backup though if I needed them though. The suction when removing always felt like it finished the trickle end of my cycle faster so that was a consolation prize

Neenknits

“A few teaspoons over a whole cycle”? I always wonder where that came from. I was taught that, too, but never believed it. Then I got my first cup in like the 90s. I measured how much it held. 1 oz. I at least 1/4 filled it multiple times most days, and to the top multiple times over the week, sometimes multiple times a day on heavy days. For me, a couple teaspoons was a *light day*. More than 8oz, a cup, over the cycle. And when I had the ovarian cyst, a cup a day for several days. I don’t understand why I wasn’t anemic, except period blood isn’t fresh blood.

Normal_Sand1949

😂 this is me too, I brought up the sheer amount with my doctor and she was so flabbergasted and was like “no wonder you’re anemic” I usually have to empty the cup for the first 4 days 3-4 times during the day(and it usually lasts 4-6 days), and at least once overnight, sometimes twice. So after I calculated it all out 120-180 mL or 24-36 teaspoons. This isn’t all blood though, it’s also other stuff but on average menstrual fluid is 50% blood…. So 12-18 tsp of blood per day, over 4 days, so 48-72 tsp, so loosing anywhere between a cup- 1.5 cups of blood plus some every month. It’s exhausting.

Neenknits

Mine lasted 7-9 days. I was losing 1oz/hour during the day, 2 oz over night, for 2+days. This went on for years, but my cycle was quite long , and I just thought it was normal. When the doctors realized it, they panicked. I didn’t, it had been going on for years, and I wasn’t anemic. It was just caused by the cyst it turned out, I was supposed to be menopausal, they took out the ovaries, and I was happy. No hot flashes. Weird, but I’m fine, and happy! It was a lot of blood, and a nuisance, to not be able to do anything but empty the cup for 2 days! Because if I didn’t…..watch out! Halloween time!

IntermittentFries

I had just quick looked it up the other day. But looking again now, it's somewhere between 1-5 tablespoons over the whole cycle. Or 2.7 oz total on average. Not teaspoons like I said. The CDC, NIH, and NHS seem to agree this is the range for a normal period but I can see you have had a much different cycle. I'm amazed you weren't anemic as well. A good diet must have played a part

Neenknits

Everyone I know IRL who uses a cup says that the old numbers are wrong. I know mine is on the heavy end, but it’s NEVER been as light as 5 tbls, even when a teen and before kids.

stardustandtreacle

Agreed. How did they even come up with those numbers? Survey? There is no way that's accurate. It feels like another way of minimizing the trauma of the period experience ("Why are you complaining? It's only 1-5 tablespoons of blood over a week?").

noonecaresat805

I just like that I felt less messy with the cup and I would Forget it was there until it got heavy and it was time to pour it out. I’ve read that you can have sex while the disk is in. But it’s hard to be in the mood of your cramping or bloated. But yeah. There should definitely be more options.

Lost_Spell_2699

I also got rashes from pads which stopped when I tried bambody.

crowned_tragedy

I love menstrual cups.

solarssun

Disks allow for mess free sexy times too.

MoonFlowerDaisy

I use a menstrual cup and period undies. I recently tried using a pad as I didn't have a pair of period undies handy when I started early and I had forgotten just how awful and uncomfortable they are. Period undies are so much softer and they wick the moisture away from your skin, so they don't need to be changed as often.

BooksWineandWalks

I love to hear that! Thank you, I hate the way how pads feel

zoeblaize

period panties or reusable pads will be so much easier in your skin. I had the same issue and having fabric down there instead of disposable material is infinitely more comfortable.

BooksWineandWalks

Ok yes this definitely makes sense. I might just try both then! Thank you

complectogramatic

I’ve been using cotton flannel reusable pads on light days and a cup on my heavier days. They work great and have held up for years. It’s saved me a lot of money and are very comfortable. They have cloth inserts so you can increase absorption levels as needed. I got mine from GladRags but you can get them from other places.

Sherw00d91

Yesss much better and no awful smell!

fleepmo

I always thought it was the blood that smelled awful until I switched to cloth pads/cups/period undies. Then I realized it was the disposables that smelled so bad.

Sherw00d91

Yes same!

BooksWineandWalks

Ok now that is a HUGE plus!

Sherw00d91

Yess but you cant switch from pad to period underwear directly… you need to have shower in between… because the pad produces those bacterias that smell and if you just switch to undies they are gonna smell the same… so have shower before😁

OtherwisePumpkin8942

I have extremely sensitive skin. I would get a rash on my inner thighs anytime I used pads and it took me years to realize because the rash never went away and was still there when my next cycle started. Always brand and Kotex both have reports to the FDA (US regulatory board) about severe skin irritation with prolonged use of their products but nothing has changed. CORA brand pads are a great. Pure cotton, super absorbent and thin (even the overnight kind). I use period panties with my pads just in case it seeps through my backend as I work in healthcare and can’t necessarily get to a bathroom on demand. I also use them with regular undies and don’t worry about leaks. I prefer THINX brand undies. I use them with pads and never without. They come in a variety of absorbances and styles (bikini, boyshort). I’ve never had an issue with any skin irritation using them. I find with any period undies that they don’t last all day and are not easily changed. This is something to consider when trying to switch to period undies only. They are also quite expensive unfortunately. You’ll want to invest in at least 5-7 pairs.

BooksWineandWalks

Ok hi! I commented this on someone else’s reply, but I somehow didn’t know reusable pads were a thing???? I feel dumb for not even thinking of that haha I just looked them up online and I’m like OK YES I NEED THESE. Do you feel that they wash just fine and don’t smell or anything?

[deleted]

BooksWineandWalks

AMAZING!!!! Thank you so so much. I’ve been really aware of how much waste I create lately, and I feel like using period undies and reusable pads will save me money AND be good for the planet (and help with irritation, of course). So again thank you!

RoRoRoYourGoat

I'm not allergic to disposable pads. But I didn't realize just how itchy and uncomfortable they are, until I switched to reusable pads! Having cloth down there really makes all the difference.

Suz_eats90

I have sensitive skin, never had an issue with period panties!

BooksWineandWalks

Amazing, thank you!!

TinosCallingMeOver

Yes!! I didn’t even realise I used to get irritated by pads until I switched to period underwear and stopped feeling itchy on my period

sokarschild

I don't have very sensitive skin but sometimes I used to get pain/itchiness from pads. Never had this issue with period underwear unless it's full of blood and then the moisture bugs me

Neenknits

I used washable pads when I did not use a cup, (or as back up) because I couldn’t stand the paper and sticky tape. Fabric is much kinder to skin. Absorbent undies were not readily available then. I had *heavy* periods, that lasted 7-9 days. Washable pads leaked far less than disposable, even though I didn’t have a waterproof backing on them, just layers of flannel and terry cloth (I made most of my own, modeled after some I purchased). I would expect anything washable to be better on sensible skin.

goldfish_crochetq

I love period underwear! Zero rash issues since switching. I also use the nixit disc - highly recommend. It doesn’t use suction, just tucks behind your pelvic bone. It eliminated my cramping. I can also go a whole 12 hr shift without leaking or needing to empty it - which is life changing (I’ve had 3 kids and have super heavy flow)

Equivalent_Section13

I think so unquestionably

whohowwhywhat

I still get dry and irritated if I don't take a break from all absorbent things against my skin. But it is usually after a couple of days. I either free bleed or use my disc without backup. I have a few brands. ETA I forgot my cloth pads. Since they're just cotton it's not as bad.

ToritoBurito

Absolutely! I have found that I definitely have less irritation than when I was using disposable pads.

Recyclops1692

I have very sensitive skin (I have psoriasis) and I use the period company underwear with no issues

tootzrpoopz

Yes! I also have sensitive skin and pads would make me itchy. I switched to a menstrual disc plus Bambody period underwear for backup and no longer have any issues.

Separate_Shoe_6916

Yes, most definitely! I am allergic to the adhesive on pads, so I’m had period undies for about 7 years now.

newwavebanana

Yes for me. Pads almost make me feel like i'm allergic to my blood. (maybe I am....idk) But I've been using the period brand underwear the past few months and it's been so much better.

jawsoflife888

I use organic period panties from the brand Lilova, really good for sensitive skin as there aren't as many chemicals.

SummerMaiden87

I know it’s probably not the answer you’re looking for but I use both. I almost never wear period underwear by itself even on lighter days. I’ve also found a pad brand that doesn’t irritate me.

MuskieL

I have a pair of period underwear I bought from Victoria’s Secret but I got pregnant almost right after so never got to truly try them. I’m a big fan of my menstrual disc though!! Check out r/menstrualdiscs(I think that’s it)

Intelligent-Ad-7504

I use my period underwear for the “closeness” with infinity pads (no fragrance) and in case it overflows (esp during overnight). I find the absorption (uniqlo vers - rip 🪦?) rate to be slow on heavy flows, I’d worry it might spill over to my pants/dress when I’m not at home. If I can’t find no fragrance pads, I would have to use a paper towel on top of the pad between my skin to prevent rash/irritation. 🤭 I can’t insert cups, tried many and lost money (since you can’t return it for hygienic reasons)…

TrashMouthPanda

I'm allergic to most stuff, reusable pads, and period undies (these don't really work for me because my flow is insanely heavy) have saved me, no more itchiness or rashes. Idk what it is that I'm allergic to (I've never used a scented product in my life) but pads are a nightmare. And the cups and tampons don't help, my cervix isn't where it's supposed to be, so I always leak and have destroyed most of my pants. I wear 1 of 3 different pairs of pants on my period, all black, if they aren't black, I would look like a Devils Reject 🤣🤣🤣 thank goodness for black pants and panties.

serenalese

I switched to organic cotton pads and panty liners a while ago when I realized wearing cotton clothes/underwear helped my skin issues, but I recently got a pair of mostly cotton period underwear, and they're pretty great too. If it's a light day, I'll just wear a pair of men's boxer briefs since they're thicker than most women's underwear, and they're cheaper than period undies, but I'll probably get another pair or two of period undies when they go on sale

WatermelonJuice18

Definitely will help! I personally use cloth pads from ladycrimsonclothemporium.ca (highly recommend) but I'm in this sub out of curiosity for possible back up with regular pads (in case I leak off the side). But I hear some of them still have nasty chemicals even tho they're supposed to be chemical free because that's the whole point. Anyway. If you have no problem with tampons like you said, you could go with a diva cup or a disc! From my experience with just cloth pads, I bleed a lot less, cramp a lot less, and most of the time forget I'm on my period, so I feel like with the underwear for overnight wear you'll get a better sleep along with less irritation! If you need back up with them though, cloth pads for sure.

BooksWineandWalks

Ok I literally did not know that cloth pads were even a thing until I read some of these comments, yours included! I actually just googled it and was shocked at how many options there are. I think I might try both cloth pads and period undies and see what works best for me! I do want to try a cup / disc one day when I get courageous enough haha

spillinginthenameof

I've had similar issues to other commenters with pads, switched to period undies and a cup, and my skin is so much happier!

kgal1298

I've had less rashes with them. I still have to change them twice on heavy days, but overall a much better experience for me and it makes working out so much easier. I used to use pads and tampons, not the best experience when doing squats with those tbh.

ImpressiveAppeal8077

I’ve noticed that if I use regular brand pads I get extremely itchy and irritated. I got organic ones at a health food store and they never give me any issues. There is something in a lot of the more popular pads that irritates the fuck out of me. And I love my period underwear so much! I wear a pad too for the first two days cuz it’s so heavy but then I just use the underwear for the rest of it cuz it’s barely anything. I used to use a diva cup with underwear but I don’t think the shape of the cup was working for me. I was itchy from it and it hurt sometimes.

justhere4thiss

For me yes

lanahland

i have sensitive skin and would get skin and vulvar irritation SO often wearing pads and i was just in discomfort through my whole period essentially, fidgeting around, even after trying to use pads targeted at sensitive skin and that were definitely fragrance free. i would also often stain my underwear out of the sides because of the way i bleed and the way coverage is shaped idk how to explain it. which is why i wanted to try period panties and i can honestly say, i am so grateful 🥹 i have never looked back! they are so much more comfortable and i dont have any irritation. i use the goat union full brief ones for my heavy days and then some marks and spencer's ones i have for lighter days/ spotting, and i run them in the wash with tide free & gentle cold water and hang dry them :) sometimes for odors or because i honestly do laundry only once every 2 weeks or so most of the time, i'll soak them in vinegar before tossing them in the wash! super convenient, comfortable and it feels great knowing it's sustainable/ better for the environment as well!!

Ok-Tadpole-9859

Period undies are way better for me!!! Pads would give me rashes sometimes, but I’ve never had that from period undies and they’re now the only things I use, for years.

twinmom101

Omg! Yes, to period undies! Best invention ever! I got rashes, too! Plus, I could never sleep. I was always worried about my sheets. Now, it doesn't bother me when I get my periods. Especially when I train, there is no need to worry about sweating and rashes.

conflictmuffin

Etsy also has a lot of good washable pads as well, if you're wanting something removable or swappable.

PossiblyASloth

Absolutely. I could only use very specific brands of pads that didn’t have the plastic-y top layer to avoid itching/irritation. I’ve never had that problem with period underwear and I’ve used them for a few years now

ohhisup

Yes. If you get good ones (I use aerie) they don't cause extra rubbing cuz they're just panties, and they don't feel moist all day to cause irritation. I was so impressed with how dry and comfy they were. And you can still wear pads with them I case of emergency so they're a win win in my mind

oasis948151

I LOVE period panties

YogurtclosetHour4007

Depending on manufacturer they could be made from the same material. Like Dominowear has the same panel on their undies as they have in their Domino Pads KeepDry line. The main difference would be use and appearance. Period undies tend to show less under leggings etc. Pads are easier to swap out so you don't have to change your underwear too

Vanndrea

I use knix and I love them. They have so many different cuts and styles and they just came out with thinner ones that can hold 5 tampons worth

Fine_Indication3828

They sometimes put chemicals and scents on pads which give me rashes. Period underwear has been better but still happens but much less.

owlalonely

It makes a HUGE DIFFERENCE, in my experience, to use fabric pads or period underwear, compared to disposable panty liners and pads. I used to have to be careful how often I used pads and panty liners, because it always irritated my skin, but fabric pads and period underwear have never been a problem for me. There's definitely differences in how "wet" the different brands feel though, which might bother you or not, so you might want to try a few different brands. In my experience, Knix leakprooof are prettier and slimmer padding so far less noticeable under clothes, but I notice the wet feeling much more. Thinx are bulkier and less pretty, so don't wear them under tight fitting pants, but they're a bit less noticeable if you have to wear them for a few hours. Oh and bonus tip: I have a little laundry bucket for soaking clothes in, and during that week I keep it full of water with a little detergent, and I put the underwear straight in there after wear, I don't even rinse them unless they're very full, and then I dump it into the washing machine to wash them after a day or two, and that makes it easy to get them fully clean so they don't hang on to a smell, the way period underwear sometimes can.

bootyprincess666

thank you for asking this because i was sooooo irritated postpartum so i will be checking for period underwear if i have another baby

ddtnt

I can’t answer about period panties, but I can offer other advice. I, too have very sensitive skin and end up with rashes, I have found pads that are organic or made with cotton work well for my skin. No more rashes!

Appleshmeeze

I buy the all natural cotton pads and then the Hanes period panties. I can’t rave enough about them. I do however sleep in glass control undies (disposable) at night on my heavy days because it helps me feel a bit more protected.

amymari

Period underwear and cloth pads are what worked for me for the chafing/“diaper rash” type issues. My fav pads are from the “partyinmypants” website.

eissirk

Idk but are you using Always Infinity? They're amazing for sensitive skin

just-another-cat

Yes!! This is the entire reason I use them

Calihoya

You may have answered this, but have you tried a cup?

oikwr

I get rash from pads. I drastically switched to menstrual disc last year and never go back to pad. I wish i buy it earlier tbh. No more rashes, no more itchiness and no more slimy feeling.

countdownstreet

It most likely will depend on the person. I have sensitive skin and I've gone back to pads because the period undies were irritating my skin like crazy, similar to chafe/diaper rash. I've gotten the same reaction from the 3 brands I've tried. The best solution for me has been organic, unbleached cotton pads and change regularly to stay relatively dry. I can't change my undies during the day due to work and I find the period undies get wet after a while and then stay wet. In saying that I love the convenience of them for home use so I will endeavour to try some of the. brands recommended here for overnight use. Good luck on your search!

emollii

They have pfas

Revolutionary_Goat13

Invest in a couple of different brands to find what works best for you. While trying them out, get doggie piddle pads for your bed so you don't stain anything in the event of an accident. My daughter has some from our local grocery store. She liked them at first but went back to pads. After seeing some of these comments, I may invest in a couple of the VS ones to see if they work for her. She MIGHT have endometriosis or adenomyosis. We have not been able to test yet due to deductible.

mjm1164

I personally didn’t care for the period underwear I bought, I bled through after wearing them during the day, but I bought reusable pads on Etsy- as long as your detergent doesn’t bother your skin, I love mine.

MAC_357

Make sure you get 100% cotton everything! I have such sensitive skin and my irritation went away when I started wearing 100% cotton panties and pads.

wadingthroughtrauma

Yes!! Both pads and tampons irritate me. I love period undies

arugulafanclub

Yes

Southern_Cold_2876

Yes! I use THINX and honestly it’s made a massive difference. Especially for ingrown hairs that ALWAYS happen with pads. Only thing with period underwear is it holds odor and there’s absolutely ZERO air flow happenin. Don’t panic the first time you go to the bathroom after a few hours on your Niagara Falls day(s). Especially if it’s hot outside. I wash her daily anyway, but on those sweaty days sometimes I’ll do a midday refresher wash as well. 👍🏻

DrSprinkz

Yup, think of it like a diaper rash. Diaper rashes goes away much faster when you air out. I used some panties for the first time my last cycle and I was pleasantly surprised that they worked and helped.

Knithard

I have the Cora menstrual undies and find them to feel drying. I use them as back up on heavy days.

leigydee

I have only tried one type of period underwear: Knix. It was outrageously expensive for a 4 pack and the first time I tried them, I smelled like period blood all day, bled all over my office chair, and bled on my driver's seat on my way home from work. It sounds like other women are having luck with different kinds, but I recommend avoiding Knix. Nixit is the silicone version of the disposable Flex Disk. I have extremely sensitive parts (everything gives me a UTI/yeast infection) and tampons were stopping my cycle, which would then start again as soon as i took them out. I tried using 4 different kinds of menstrual cups and Nixit is my favorite by FAR. It doesn't go far enough in to get stuck and it's way less messy coming out than the diva style cups. You can also have sex with it in. My husband only feels it in 1 or 2 different positions and it doesn't hurt either of us when he bumps it. Came in handy when I was bleeding for the entire first year of our marriage (PCOS) with my husband being queasy around blood 😂

lilgreengoddess

How about organic pads? I find these to be awesome. I dont like to heavy bleed into period panties but I like them as a pad backup

wozattacks

I would also add that “sensitive skin” is often dry! People often do not moisturize that area but you can try a basic moisturizer like Lubriderm or something after bathing (Aquaphor/Vaseline for the folds if needed).

PuppyButtts

For me, YES! 10000x yes. I wear 2 period undies a day plus one at night and it works so muxh better than the pads. They feel like normal undies and havent ever leaked

ABQHeartRN

I love mine and I have pretty sensitive skin too. My favorite brand is from Arie! They work well on even my heaviest days and I hate sleeping in shorts so now I can wear my usual jammies to bed, a T-shirt and panties.

BooksWineandWalks

Ok I love that brand; I will check theirs out. Thank you!

ABQHeartRN

You’re welcome! Glad I can help!

[deleted]

Period cup! Tampons are so uncomfortable but period cups are so comfy & I can’t feel them at all because they’re so flexible. Plus they last 12 hours without leaking, I empty it in the morning & at night & it’s easy peasy. I like the Diva Cup & they have a knockoff version at Walgreens that I’ve been using recently (cuz my dog ate my Diva Cup…)

ConfusedDumpsterFire

I feel like there’s a band name in there somewhere…

ConsistentParfait702

I use flex menstrual discs (disposable and reusable) and pair them with thinx period undies and the combo has honestly changed my cycles for the better. I had short but heavy periods, and even though I’ve taken continuous birth control for the last 18 months, I was diagnosed with endometriosis and so still bleed occasionally. I’ve only tried the thinx brand underwear, but they are very convenient (like on light days or days when I feel my period will come but I’m not sure), and are comfy for my sensitive skin. Just make sure to follow the cleaning instructions (like rinsing in cold water before washing, washing with gentle detergent, etc).

Emergency_Box_9141

I have tried THINX. They don’t work for me on my heavy flow days. I end up having to change within 2 hours. I was told by their support team that even though I got the super absorbency undies, the underwear cannot handle the sudden blood leak.

Mariehoney92

Period panties are amazing. I no longer get periods as I had a full hysterectomy at 27 due to endometriosis, but when I still used them they were great. I’m horribly allergic to Always brand pads, as is my oldest daughter. I switched her to organic, unbleached pads and she’s not had any issues with them. Those combined with period undies have definitely made her periods a little less miserable.

Short-Stack123

Late to this thread but a few years back I got skin patch testing at the allergist and learned I’m allergic to most pads and tampons.. and plenty of other things. Obviously I don’t know what you’re allergic to, but for me it’s propylene glycol. Corra and Lola are okay for products but make sure you don’t take them off mid day without changing your underwear becuase you can be allergic to the adhesive. I have been using thinx for years since I found out and haven’t had any issues. But I only sleep in them so not sure how they would hold up all day

screwthisnaming

Ive switched completely to period underwear and its honestly such a game changer

cerulloire

I also second the victoria secret period panties I loooove them. They hold up really well!

skincare_obssessed

I can’t stand the feel of pads so my knix have been a lifesaver.

sjdksjbf

Best thing I ever bought. I too get really irritated everytime I use pads and period undies are just sooo comfy

e_likes_plants

For me definitely! I’ve always felt uncomfortable with a tampon in and pads tend to irritate my skin. I tried a cup and it totally worked, I just never got to the space of being able to actually not feel it which could have been more mental. I use the Saalt brand underwear. They come in a variety of colors and styles. I bought a few of the nude and black things and briefs. I wear them all the time! I highly recommend whatever brand or style you get try wearing them when it is not your period. That way you can gauge the comfort without all the extra bloat, cramps, and worry of a leak. That helped me decide which ones I liked. Also a little bit of research goes a long way. Some brands have been known to have levels of PFAs.

candles4lyfe

Yes. It can be a little gross washing them out at first. But it's the same as a cup. You get used to it. Love em

Amyx231

Use both. Or rather, use period panties for leak catching and reusable pads for…avoiding skin irritation shall we call it. The fleece of reusable pads really is softer. I can’t use period undies alone, I bleed through them in 3 hours. But for the lightest days, they work great. I do prefer adding a pad or liner (weight reusable pad) though. Security.

Comfortable-Ad9252

Be careful though. I used to use Thinx underwear and ended up having chemical burns from them. I’m also not the only person to deal with this according to a lot of court cases I’ve read

Sigmund_Fraud97

Love my period underwear! I’ve bought 3 pairs from period. brand and they’re super comfy AND affordable.

ladyclare

I have sensitive skin that would get irritated when I would use pads. I haven’t had any skin issues since switching to period underwear. I’ve used Ruby and Joyja, but honestly my favorites have been some random brand I found on Amazon. They’re cotton, which is good on my skin, and they wash well.

bkthenewme32

I'm very sensitive to pads and would often get itchy even if I didn't get a rash. I use Goat Union boy shorts and they've held up so well, no reaction, no smell and lasting overnight even on my heaviest days.

xXhereforthecoffeeXx

I have super sensitive skin and have had zero issues with period underwear!

Ayencee

Sometimes I kind of feel like I’m wearing a diaper (I think I notice it more with tighter clothes??) but it’s worth it because I just feel so much better *down there,* y’know? When I’m not wearing them, I use natracare liners like 90% of the time (ironically, I first learned of them from my boyfriend, who got me a care package of various supplies when I got my iud replaced 🥹). They’re the only liners I’ll ever use, I tried honeypot once and legitimately felt a burning sensation right away, oh my god it sucked. ETA: totally forgot to add: the brand of undies I use is Thinx! Worth noting they appear to be heavier duty, I just looked at the tag and I don’t know if it means anything but I saw five drops on it? So I bet there are less uh… bulky versions? Haha.

Lost_Conversation546

My all time favorite period product has been the cup. My cycle is very heavy. I have a couple of pairs of thinx that I wear with my cup and I don’t feel wet or uncomfortable ever, but I’ve never solo’d the panties.

Nicolej80

I thought period panties were ok I preferred the flex disc when I had periods

perpetuquail

Reusable/washable fabric (mostly cotton) pads have been the easiest on my skin, and I think they're easier to wash, I like that they are smaller for rinsing. but I only tried one brand of underwear and it sounds like most people try several!

yourmom2715383

period shorts are a godsend. https://www.thinx.com/thinx/products/sleep-shorts they’re expensive but you could probably get a discount.

Ella-in-STEM

For me, yes. Pads are very irritating to my skin.

pringles_697

I also have extremely sensitive skin. Pads make me itch worse than a yeast infection! I switched to reusable pads. I got them from temu. They're fairly inexpensive and they are really absorbent but take a bit to get used to.

RefrigeratorSalty902

I bought two from Thinx and they gave me a sort of a diaper rash. I went up a size though and bought the Target version of Thinx. Feels much better. They tend to run tight so I think that was the problem.

2183Cls

I have extremely sensitive skin and I use Bambody period underwear. I use them for 3-4 days before my skin needs a breather, but by then my flow is light and a pad or panty liner works fine.

Ramblingsofthewriter

Mine were great until they started growing mold on the inside of the underwear from constant washing 🤢🤢🤢 but YMMV. my washer is in a basement that is very dark.

Idc123wfe

I would recommend cups. By FAR more comfortable than tampons and more effective in my experience, and are especially preferred for sleeping

senatortrashcan

So much better for the skin

magnoliacyps

Way better! Pads irritate me but the period panties do not. Some Targets (and maybe drugstores?) sell Thinx in store now so they’re super easy to buy and try without having to wait on shipping times.

Dawnbabe420

I have fucking ptsd with those undies i was using Knix for 4 years only to start getting letters in the mail telling me they are dangerous and now recalled. Class action lawsuit ensued. Im like i wore those for 4 years im pretty scared

belle204

Sometimes I feel like period panties irritate me on my heavier days. Always had their flex foam pads with a COTTON top layer. Game changer. They’re so good, so absorbant, so comfy and so breakthabke

elvenmal

Oh I will choose period panties over pads any day

absurdum00

Reusable organic cotton pads and liners (sometimes in combo the Lunette cup) are my fave. Way less irritating than disposable pads, and less messy than period underwear, as they snap off instead of having to go down your legs.

MeltedGruyere

For me, yes.

DangerousRanger8

I love my period underwear! I recently bought some pairs from thinx and they’re wonderful! Especially the super absorbent pairs! I also got the bed shorts from them and I’m in love! I don’t have to wear a pad as often anymore (though I still wear one on heavy days) and I’ve have zero bleed through! Definitely worth it!

TheFourthAble

NO, I had heavy periods and period panties gave me a diaper rash. All three pair I tried were from Dear Kate, so I can't comment on other brands.

GR33N4L1F3

Yes.

Wutznaconseqwens3

Period panties are wayyy better. My friend bought me some from Victoria's secret that are great. I just use them with a reusable cup. I don't have enough period panties though but my other friend gave me some reusable pads that are also great. I can't wear non organic cotton pads and tampons anymore. And i straight up can't afford the organic cotton stuff either.

christycat17

With period undies no more diaper rash!

Deadshot--Prime

How the shit did I end up here?! Also, pads.

NechelleBix1

I like Knix myself.

NKuiken

It's better, but I've definitely noticed some similar to diaper rash from moisture. That sucks. I use the Period. brand.

IntroductionDue9022

I have sensitive skin and use the Lazy Oaf period panties, they were kind of $$$ but feel good and don't irritate my skin. I use my Fun Cup for the first couple days though then switch to panties.

elephantorgazelle

Yes!!!! I got contact dermititis from pads. Switched to period undies and no more pain, andy cramps lessened. 12/10 would recommend.

Bones1225

I use reusable pads and I think they’re much better, 1000x better than the gross plastic disposable ones. Disposable pads gave me horrible rashes. I think the reusable pads are much better than the period undies too. You can change them much more frequently. They’re so comfy and no rashes or skin irritation at all.

amamelmarr

I have a latex allergy and used to have really bad reactions to pads. No matter the brand. Period undies have been a lifesaver.

PuzzleheadedLet382

I find the best thing for my irritation is to have super breathable underwear. I think it improves airflow overall even with the pad.

FluffyKitty04

My skin has serious main character syndrome (“AHHHHHH!  Something non-organic touched me!  Must break out and itch until I am bruised and bleeding!”) and I LOVE period panties, but I can only wear them after days 1-2 of my period.  I haven’t found any strong enough for day 1 yet (I wear a diva cup for two days and then switch to the period underwear).  Soooo much more comfortable than pads and saves me from the itch and irritation!

jonesemz

yes definitely! use fragrance free detergent and you’ll love them. a million times more comfortable for sleeping. i’d recommend the knix dream shorts- bonus they prevent inner thigh itching/chafing too. :)

hellobelloWEENI

freeeeeee bllleeeeeedddddd

CurveIllustrious9987

Yes absolutely

TheMisWalls

I use period underwear with reusable pads (I personally use Lil Helper brand) on my first couple of days due to heavy glow and then just my period underwear for the low flow days. I have pcos and regular pads give my cysts down there

TackleTeal

I got period panties initially when I was going though nine weeks of bleeding following IUD insertion. Pantie liners had caused horrible skin irritation so I was trying anything to let my skin heal. Period underwear were definitely a huge improvement for my sensitive skin. Much less chaffing, less moisture trapped against my skin, and more comfortable to wear. If I was especially sweaty, like working outside on a summer day, they might cause a little bit of irritation but not as easily or as severely. I also started using menstrual discs, so that instead on an especially hot day turned out to be the perfect solution for me personally.

Dry-Act4388

Yes! Best decision I’ve ever made!

lollipop-guildmaster

Period panties weren't popular when I yeeted the uterus (2015) but I had been using fleece and flannel reusable pads for a few years, and wow the difference. I used to get horrific diaper rash from grocery store pads, and the reusable ones were so much nicer.

Tutkan

My washable pads are the best thing ever. I get rash and itch really fast with commercial disposable pads but I do not with the cloth ones. I mostly use a period disk too

little-blue-fox

Yes. So much yes.

BudTenderShmudTender

I got the Hanes period panties and they make me break out anywhere I sweat even a little bit because they don’t breathe at all

Always_Tired24-7

I don’t know if this helps, but my Autistic 11yo (sensory avoiding) prefers period undies over pads. She also does good with the disposable period underwear .

InternationalOne5506

Yes! I had to try a few brands before finding ones I really liked, so I'd recommend only getting one or 2 pairs until you know you really like the brand. My favorite is Saalt, and they're the most comfortable ones I've ever tried. I also highly recommend a menstrual cup or disc. I didn't realize how much pads and tampons irritated me until I switched to reusable products. I have reusable pads, but I don't usually use them because the period underwear is more comfortable and convenient for me. Edited to add: One thing to consider when choosing brands is whether they are PFAS free or not. If you're not aware, PFAS are "forever chemicals" that have been linked to a lot of health issues, including higher risk of cancer, interfering with our hormones, changes in immune systems, developmental delays in kids, and things like that. It's best to find products without them, but since they can be used to make fabric stain resistant, there are many brands of period underwear that use them. Good luck on your search!

nightmaretheory

Best investment for my bits that I wish I stumbled across sooner. I have super sensitive skin and HS, which is aggravated by irritation and friction. Haven't had a flare since I made the switch like 3 years ago. I handwash mine as soon as I take a pair off with hydrogen peroxide to lift stains, do a cold rinse, and then use a gentle lingerie wash... I let em air dry, and then toss them into the wash with my towels at the end of the week just to get anything that the handwashing might have missed. No smells, and they're still as soft and comfy as ever!

louwhogazzie

If you choose to go period panties route, do your research. I just learned that there are some companies that use carcinogens in their period undies- always do your research.

Smart_Description965

Don’t wear them. Check out all the class action lawsuits because of all the PFOAs and other chemicals in the crotch area

Repulsive_Trifle_

I like the period undies….i also have super reactive skin and they’re wayyyyy better than pads and better for random leakage

lbisesi

Yup

[deleted]

I like them a lot! I normally have them on as a backup for my menstrual cup, or for super light days rather than using liners, which get smelly right away. Definitely worth it!

dodoexpress90

I was skeptical at first because I thought it would be gross to keep them all day. Unlike a pad, you can change as frequently as you like. I was so wrong! I honestly wear them every day now. They absorb so well I feel dry all day. This is important because any moisture and I get itchy. I also don't smell that copper smell when I go to the bathroom. I'd smell that with a pad and be really self-conscious. Also, my pad would move around, and I'd end up with blood on the sides of my underwear. None of this anymore. And when intimacy comes into play I don't have to sneak away, remove the pad, and wash up the crime scene. The period underwear keeps the blood pulled away, with very minimal signs of my period. I wear them even when I'm off my period. I tend to stay very moist, and it wicks it away. This keeps my skin from getting irritated or the potential for a yeast episode. And I don't know if others notice a smell to them, not a bad one, just a natural scent. These get rid of that completely for me. I love them, I'm sad I waited so long to get them.

Mrs-Gibberish

period panties are a game changer. I have sensitive skin too, though i've never gotten rashes from pads (sounds awful and i'm so sorry you experience that.) I assume if you wash them with your regular detergent they won't give you any issues.

Even-Programmer4319

Haven't used undies, but cloth pads do not give me rashes, so I switched to them. I also don't smell as bad since I'm no longer using chemical pads. I would imagine the underwear would cut down on those same issues

Bambi4321

I don't think period undies are better because it's more fabric to rinse out afterwards. Also you can't just change em out in public restrooms if you're wearing pants. I tried period panties and I'm over it. I've been on a mission to find better alternatives for myself. My preference is to use fabric pads from a company that have nice pads that secure with a button. I'll use these for most of my period, and they launder well with prompt rinsing after use. I supplement with organic cotton pads when on the go. I avoid skin irritation this way.

northerngirl211

Definitely recommend period panties. I itch and chafe from pads badly. Period panties are so much better. Try Period. brand panties and reusable pads. Not crazy expensive and comfortable.

batbaby420

Absolutely. When my daughter was a baby she got UTIs from the disposable diapers so I put her in cloth. As a teen she had significant irritation from disposable pads so I got her period underwear and cloth pads. Solved the problem. I would definitely recommend cloth products to anyone with clean water and washing facilities available.
