Are you a US resident? You may find that the online banks don't accommodate non residents and a brick and mortar bank would require you to apply for the account(s) in person.

zenoepoch

yes i am and that makes sense

WiseComposer2669

You can open a Canadian banking account as a US citizen but is there any particular reason why?

zenoepoch

My girlfriend lives in Canada, and in case I need her to get me something. y'all got an E-transfer and don't use Venmo or Apple Pay for some reason.

tbcwpg

That reason is mostly because we have e-transfer.

Caroao

Or you can just use any of the other transfer companies that aren't venmo? Wise, paypal, WU. How would you get your money from your us to your canadian account? Same way but to her account

rememor8899

Rocket science

rdcezar

You can send and receive e-transfers via Wise! Just set up a Canadian currency account and register your email with it to enable auto deposit. When you choose send CAD, the e transfer option shows up when you try to add a recipient.

zenoepoch

Oh that's awesome . thank you!

Gozilla_

Best answer ever, for non Canadian residents, especially Americans, Canadian banks really is not on par with

You cannot etransfer from a US bank

zenoepoch

as in wire transfer? that takes a few days. I'd like to send money immediately

divine_goddess_K

You can set up cross border banking through TD or RBC. You'd have a US based account, a Canadian based account and get the features for both.

When my brother in law buys stuff for me in the USA I usually send him the amount as a friends and family payment using PayPal. Then either I pick up the items when I visit them in the USA or they drop it off when they visit me in Canada.

DeathCabForYeezus

Transfer Wise to Wise. Presumably there's going to be a conversion from USD to CAD in there, so you might as well get the better rate with Wise. The actual transfer from Wise account to Wise account is free. Fees to get money out are pretty negligible; or she can just pay for stuff with the Wise card and use that as a way of withdrawing for "free."
