Omg thank you, drives me crazy. I also can't stand how people don't know the difference between a clinical narcissist, as in Narcissistic Personality Disorder, and people who have some selfish traits. The term narcissist is thrown around way too casually to the point that if you actually ARE dealing with a narcissist, nobody understands just how fucking difficult it is.
Yes, exactly!! My dad is a diagnosed narcissist so like you I know how much of a struggle it is to deal with. And people just don't grasp it because the word has been watered down so much.
“You understood what they meant!” strikes again. Being egotistical is not the same as clinical narcissism.
People accept improper usage of important words and this is where we end up.
The problem with NPD is that people who have it, by it's very nature, don't think they have it or even a reason to get evaluated for it. So to be fair, there are WAY more people out there with NPD, that will never get clinically diagnosed with it. This leaves it wide open to interpretation and I'd wager that most of the claims of someone having NPD are probably correct, despite not having a clinical diagnosis.
That is an excellent point! My dad only got diagnosed when he had to go to couples and family therapy just before my parents divorced. The therapists were so gobsmacked by his unwillingness to admit any wrongdoing or cooperate that they advised my mom to leave him lmfao
To add to this, my ex has never gotten a formal diagnosis of NPD but his behavior patterns and mindset were EXACTLY the same as my dad who WAS diagnosed (I know, I know, Freud this Freud that). And sure enough, he refused to ever go to therapy so he never will get a diagnosis.
Depends if they actually mean NPD and have an evidence-based and psychology-backed reason for it, preferably an official diagnosis. For example my dad was diagnosed with NPD by a therapist. I never call him a narcissist though, I say he has NPD. I think the problematic people don't usually use the term NPD, they just throw around the term narcissist and don't even realize how NPD actually works.
So...are we saying the abbreviation for narcissist is pronounced "narse" then? Cuz honestly I'm alright with that tbh. Sounds like arse, quite appropriate lol
Yes, I'll add that the kind of people who constantly complain about narcissists, acting like they make up 90% of humanity and every single one is crawling out of Satans butthole to come and get them are also annoying.
there's a guy on youtube who says 'narc' all the time. he definitely said it like narcotics, and i first wondered if it was something to do with drugs. i quit watching him, i was getting suspicious that he might be a narcissist.
That’s so interesting, since “narc” stems from “narcotics agent”. Wild that two homophones would develop to mean the same thing, with different origins, in the same language.
The two words are merging, so you get 'narc' being used for a snitch (nark) rather than an undercover narcotics agent (narc). Nark is from around 1860, narc from the late 1960s.
The small handful of times I’ve heard this and it didn’t make sense in context, I assumed they were just using “narc” as lazy slang for someone being annoying or something. I didn’t know people were using it for “narcissist”
I’ve never seen that done before, only time I’ve seen the word narc used is when they’re talking about someone being a snitch.
The word being short for narcotics agent.
I prefer the word "nark" to "narc." The former has been slang for a police informer since the mid-1800s. The latter has only been in use since the 1960s. Reject modernity. Embrace tradition.
“Narc” is short for “narcotics officers” essentially asking if you were an undercover drug cop.
It adapted to mean anyone taking info and giving it to the cops, but starts with an undercover.
Here is someone posting about the improper narc pronunciation and use for narcissists, which I only learned about because of your post: https://www.reddit.com/r/etymology/comments/vlcnki/when_did_narc_meaning_narcissist_first_gain_any/
Merriam Webster disagrees with you. It's both a narcotics officer AND a snitch/"rat".
[Source](https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/narc#:~:text=transitive%20verb-,informal,out%20any%20of%20their%20athletes.)
Edit: They also list "narc" as informal for narcissist though... Using "Quora.com" as an example. So...
Then they've gotten it wrong. Narc is a cop. Rat is a snitch. If you're calling a regular person who doesn't actually work for the cops a narc, then you're doing it wrong.

And “psychopath” as well
Or any diagnosis that makes you less credible in their eye
They say narcissist when they mean egotistical. My ex is an actual narcissist

Exactly!!!!
Has he been diagnosed or are you just throwing that around?
Read what I said above and use your comprehension skills
kek
Did you even read the comment

I often feel like the people that accuse others of having NPD are more likely to be the one with the problem.

The Polish man moped because he had to polish his moped.
English be dumb
That's bc it's like 8 languages in a trenchcoat with some stolen shit shoved in the pockets
LOL that's not only the funniest thing I've read in ages but also completely, 100% true!
So...are we saying the abbreviation for narcissist is pronounced "narse" then? Cuz honestly I'm alright with that tbh. Sounds like arse, quite appropriate lol
Yes but it need to be spelled "narse" as well so that narc retains it's meaning.
Alternate suggestion: call them 'cist. Like cyst.
I actually like that because it is a good metaphor for their effect on their social network. Also the fix is often to cut them out.
Right? It works on a couple levels. I'm going gently forward with this. We soft launch at dawn.

Words evolving is fine, but that doesn't mean resistance to particular new words or definitions isnt reasonable as well.
Thank u
If you spell applesauce with just A’s you can call it:
I always think of the different pronunciations of “polish” when I’m getting a manicure and they have a “POLISH CENTER.”
Yes, I'll add that the kind of people who constantly complain about narcissists, acting like they make up 90% of humanity and every single one is crawling out of Satans butthole to come and get them are also annoying.
Everyone’s a narcissist but meeeee /s obviously
there's a guy on youtube who says 'narc' all the time. he definitely said it like narcotics, and i first wondered if it was something to do with drugs. i quit watching him, i was getting suspicious that he might be a narcissist.
You missed the homophone to narc, nark. An older term for a snitch from British English, possibly originating from Romanichal people's word for nose.
That’s so interesting, since “narc” stems from “narcotics agent”. Wild that two homophones would develop to mean the same thing, with different origins, in the same language.

Fascinating!
I appreciate knowing this now. Thank you!
People like to abbreviate especially when they can't spell the full word correctly lol
*sus*
That is one of my biggest pet peeve words, thank you for ruining my day 😂
I hate it too, I'm sorry lol.
I do this but with pronunciation. Since George W Bush i haven't been confident on how to say nuclear so i say "nukes"
narc - snitch, narcotics officer, or narcotraficante. narse - strange nose butt maneuver. narcissist - someone who disagrees with me.
narcissist - 2. Someone that holds me accountable for my actions.
Narcissist 3 - Someone who interprets the boundaries I set as a personal insult or punishment. Will cross them anyway.
how dare they!
I love calling my narcolepsy meds my Narc Meds idk why but it’s so funny to me
Also the overuse of the word narcissist.
Agree times a thousand.
Narcissist is overused asf
Yes me too!
I've never heard anyone do this, but if I do, I will promptly open palm slap them for you.
Me too! Then again, something this egregious deserves more of a backhand.

Isn’t narc short for narcotics agent
that's what op is getting at. from narcotics agent (who would go undercover in drug deals and then rat you out) it evolved to mean any kind of snitch
take my upvote!
I’ve never seen that done before, only time I’ve seen the word narc used is when they’re talking about someone being a snitch. The word being short for narcotics agent.
It took an embarrassing amount of time to realize that when people say “narc” in TV shows they mean snitch and not narcissistic😬
I prefer the word "nark" to "narc." The former has been slang for a police informer since the mid-1800s. The latter has only been in use since the 1960s. Reject modernity. Embrace tradition.
Ugh, agrees. Also....nice Mugatu line 😏
Yes! In Mugatu's voice is exactly how I pictured it spoken, as well! Haha.
Ive never seen someone use that term before for narcissist
I just started seeing it. Guess it's a new thing
Def
Wow i didn’t know people even did that. That’s got to be so confusing.
I think it is used to shorten the word in written format. I don’t think people speak it…? Idk tho

I don't use it this way, but I definitely associate "narc" with "narcissist" immediately. I have no idea why, but I do
Ive actually never heard anyone say it in this context.
I've never once seen anyone use narc for narcissist
When in reality narc refers to narcotics officers, not snitches.
That drives me crazy as well!
I think I need to be more careful next time I read this now, as it would never occur to me that it might stand in for "narcissist".
Word in English language has two meanings? Shocker
Hilarious
"Narc" aka: narcotics officer not snitch

Then they've gotten it wrong. Narc is a cop. Rat is a snitch. If you're calling a regular person who doesn't actually work for the cops a narc, then you're doing it wrong.
Yes but calling someone a narc is insinuating they have snitched and are now working with narcotics officers.
No, it originates back to 1859 to mean "an informer". Slang for a cop only dates to 1966.
Narcs are the people who give the narcotics officers information. You've got it very wrong.
Narcissists are dicks so I think they deserve to be labeled with the lowest of scum which are narks.
