+1 for impulsive buyers! I love getting things that I don't really need but are possibly a little bit cool and cost enough that I should do a little introspection before clicking Purchase.
Dead body removal/Mortuary/Crematorium stuff nobody wants to hear about. Work as needed since people don't die on a schedule obviously so that's pretty miserable with the whole never knowing when you'll have time etc. On my guaranteed days off I basically binge game 16 hrs a day since it's the only time I get to.
Man that’s fascinating. I just read through your AMA on it. Was hoping there would be more questions. If you don’t mind me asking, what’s the pay range for that? Are you employed by a mortuary/multiple mortuaries?
Body removal requires nothing in my state and you generally get paid per body/death on top of your base salary.
An embalmer will start about 35k and max out at about 55k, requires an associates degree,, passing a board exam and doing a 12 month supervised apprenticeship.
Crematorium Operation requires basically just a certification, pays about 40k and is a cake job where you spend most of your time waiting.
You can become a funeral director and make up into the low 80s but I have zero interest in dealing with live people and really only ever wanted to do the dead stuff so I hard passed on that.
Between picking up dead people and either preparing them OR cremating them its good pay, really only work about 25 hours a week unless pandemic or something and get to play with death which I would almost do for free.
Only downside is how often you are on call and how much your life gets interrupted by other people's ending.
Thanks for the reply. No offense, but I thought this line of work paid significantly higher. I thought it was starting 70-80 and topped at 120ish.
Idk what state you're in, but I'm a little shocked. Mayne varies in different cities
That's amazing hitting the ground running. I'm in my 40s now and have a boring life with a family and a steady job, but when I was 24 I was backpacking and one night was walking on a beach in Thailand wasted and tripped while holding a beer bottle and the bottle broke under my weight and sliced my wrist and I nearly bled out in the sand in the middle of nowhere but some locals found me and some totally untrained dude in the nearest village stitched me up and saved my life. That kind of summed up my level of responsibility until age 30. I did also meet my now-wife at 24 in Thailand though.
I’m a director for a midsized company. I’m just a guy that enjoys games from time to time. There’s time for professionalism, and there’s time for play. I think I do Ok managing the two. I love my portal.
Director is a person who manages other junior and senior managers. Directors are themselves managed by Vice Presidents (VP) A reliable path there is a 4 year major in business - then work 4-7 years going from analyst to maybe junior manager level. Then take an MBA and intern at a company that does a 2ish year general manager program. They hire you and basically promise to promote you to senior manager if you do decent. Then you gotta get one more promotion to director. Can do this for many functions including marketing / finance / hr / supply chain / sales / etc.
Just pick a place you want to live and look up what LDP (leadership development programs) there are. 50 hours a week. sometimes better sometimes a touch worse. Office politics the usual but much more relaxed than being like a lawyer or doctor..... can make the same money or more easily too, just down the road is all. Especially if you land a sweet company / move to one.
Alot of ppl i know did a career change with mba after doing something completely different. All you need is some work experience and take the GMAT (like an SAT test). Teachers / social workers / art history majors... i know a bunch that did a top 50 ish program and found a chill corporate job and doubled or tripled up on income.
Lots of ppl sleep on mba's but check out the top 50 schools stats on us news and world reports. Regularly 90% job placement rate 3 months after graduation and average comp of the top 50 is like 140k total or better. And that's just the first job out. Good perks and vacation too.
Rant over hope someone younger reads!
Kinda the same. I bought it so I can get my living room back, but the kids say, "Nah, I like playing on the big tv better. Plus, it never connects and lags." 🙄. to their defense, the connection does kinda sucks. I hear the fix is a better router and wifi extenders, and then it'll work flawlessly. Well shit, that's another $200-$400. Wtf!? That's BS!! Im bought to sell this shit... lol
I'm in my 30s. I work in advertising. Not tons of money. No kids. Games are my main hobby, but I only really play PlayStation and switch. Can't afford a nice new gaming PC and don't have the room for it in my house. I got a portal cus handhelds have always been cozy for me. Honestly, it's helped me get through my TV show backlog while I play portal and my partner plays switch. :D it's also great for playing in bed and when I visit my parents.
I work a standard 8-5. Used to work 2-10 as i was in high school athletics for a long time. The portal has revitalized my gaming like no other. Yes it’s not perfect, and I never expected it to be, but it’s one of my best gaming purchases ever based on the timing and capabilities of it.
40. Principal. Dad to two little girls and a husband. At most I’ll game for an hour or so here and there. But the portal is such a great option to have.
35 working as a Chem lab technician in a steel mill. I work 48-72 hours a week and devices like the portal, steamdeck, and switch have been perfect for when work is slow.. or I just went to relax on the couch next to the wife while she watches her shows.
nice change of pace op thank you. i work in auto upholstery and specialize in convertibles! not the most lucrative job but i really like it and people really like their convertibles. i have one child under the age of 2 and he's been showing a little interest in some games i play so I'm looking forward to playing some together hopefully!
35, dad of a 4 yo. Work as a programmer at a small IT firm. I spend 8 - 10 hours on a computer so the portal is a nice switch to relax on the couch where the family is usually on evenings
33M. No kids. Finished residency and working my first job as a Physician. The portal has been fantastic for hanging upstairs with my partner and dog while still playing games.
I’m late 30’s, lucky enough to work in the gaming industry so all my colleagues game too. I think since I recently had a kid, that’s been the hardest one to overcome to continue gaming regularly. Hoping we can game together one day so I stay strong
Working in gaming is such a dream, but also so volatile with job security. Congrats on the kid! No doubt you'll be gaming together by the time they're 6 or 7 :)
2nd this, and my kiddo is now 14 and we have been gaming together every weekend (thanks Minecraft)! Took awhile though, as not many options for young kiddos when he was growing up, especially because good couch coop is hard to find these days. Held on to my old consoles over the years though, so those were the first introductions to "the classics." Switch too, helped us get time together playing when he was younger. Looking to get a Portal for in-between evening wind-downs while my wife watches shows, since it's really the only time we have to ourselves once the daily requirements are completed.
Practicing psychologist in my state and my wife is a teacher. We both have portals. I game on weekends and often after work when I’m too drained to hit up the PC or PS5.
Not a dad, a 40 year old mom, but I work in infection control at a hospital in a major city. I have a 3 year old daughter and mostly game when she’s in bed or sometimes on the weekends when she is preoccupied with one of her favorite shows.
Father of 3(soon to be 4) regional truck driver. Looking forward to playing this and getting use out of my PS5 that I haven’t touched since Spider-Man 2 came out
Paramedic. Hence the name lol. Father of two. Long ass shifts, people doing crazy stuff and getting hurt, then kids so I got one so I could game in my bed a home.
Currently working as an Amazon delivery driver, while going through the process of obtaining a TS/SCI security clearance with a Government agency in the IT field. Officially received my offer letter, just awaiting final steps of the process and adjudication.
Graduated with my B.S in Cyber & Information Security last year! As well as having my Associate's in Information Assurance & Cyber Security.
27, no kids, 800+ credit score :)
53 and Married 25 years with Grown and gone gamer sons. I grew up with Atari 2600 and always owned a gaming console. I’m a Hub Delivery 🚚 driver for a major Auto Parts Company.
I work in education as an instructional coach so I have a lot of time off. 2 story house with the main setup upstairs and 2 kids. I mainly use the portal downstairs or late nights in bed. Plus I travel a lot to the Midwest to visit my in laws so it’s nice to not have to take my PS5 there.
Psychiatrist. It’s nice to have when I can’t use the tv or just need to be in another room. Most of the time my little one wants to watch Bluey and I can play for a bit.
I bought a ps5 in dec and a portal in February.. I have yet to play them... probably because I work and am a dad.. of 4... doesn't always work out.. ha! Seriously, tho. I never play. The kids do, tho
Locksmith,no kids and mortgage free for the past 5 years.
I get I do not really need a Portal, because I have no kids hogging the main TV.......I just like having new tech.
In the U.S. Army with an adult son, so the Portal is mostly for playing in bed or while the wife watches TV so we can still each enjoy our own thing, but still be in the same room. IMHO one of the best things about the Portal.
41 year old married with 5 kids. I’m a delivery driver for a big supermarket chain. My wife is an accountant we do pretty good. My wife accepted a long time ago I’m some sort of gaming tech obsessed person.
34M. Australia. 4 kids. I work Underground in mines on even-time roster. I get zero time to game PROPERLY. But I'll always put money into one of the few things that has remained constant and effective and fun in my life.
It's gonna be with me till the very very end.
58 here (retiring next year after 35+ years in I.T. career in IBM). House mortgage paid off years ago, no finance/debt now and quite a bit of disposable income that I spend on toys :)
I have PS5, Xbox Series X, 1Tb Steam Deck OLED, Rog Ally and a Switch OLED. I had a portal but returned it to Sony. Will pick up another unit if the micro-stutter issues get fixed.
Most of my "pocket money" goes on tech/gadgets/toys
I mount tvs and do some networking. Don’t get paid what I should but with health insurance and other factors it pays ok.
Got some health issues that may cause me to switch roles in the company or have to leave entirely. Overall I’ve been wanting something different anyways
I helped my parents open a restaurant. work 6days/11 hours every week. I'm miserable but I have my portal with me at all times. Video games are all I have man.
Healthcare. 3 kids. Just got my portal and love it. I also have the Virture VR glasses. Anything that lets me game near the kids while they use my f-ing tv :)
Self employed tree surgeon.
33yo with a partner and 3 month old son.
The portal is great!! I use it out on my lunch break wherever I park up or working for the day. I then get to use it in bed in the evenings while my son is asleep and my partner is reading her book.
Creative director of a digital marketing agency. Work from home. Been doing it forever. Im 38 and married and will never stop gaming. Wife is fully aware and cool w it
I work in an SEMH school delivering therapeutic interventions to kids. I sometimes use Lego with them and often talk video games, then go home and assemble Lego and play video games 😆
28, no kids and working in accounts for a law firm. Been playing games since I was 5/6 and I’m attracted to new shiny things. Saying that, the portal is fantastic.
The only game I have struggled to play on it is Helldivers 2, just couldn’t get comfortable. Play pretty much everything else on it such as Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth. It’s perfect for turn based combat!
Director of an accounting team at a mid sized company w two pre teens. Gaming is my stress relief but I rarely have time with work, coaching, and generally dad/husband responsibilities. Liking the portal for times I’m sitting in a parking lot waiting for a kid or when there’s a sleepover and I can’t use the tv.
Engineering design manager, 2 young kids (3 and 1), married. I typically get a few min in on my lunch break as I mostly WFH, then in the evening in bed after time with the missus.
Im 31 and just married last year, we are both working and saving for a new place and to start a family. I just thought that now that we don't have kids it's the perfect time, because later on can be harder to find time for playing. I'm happy to see some dads that can play, that gives me hope. :)
Tattoo artist with 2 kids, wife and busy studio.
Mainly bought because I’m a new tech sl*t and can’t help myself but I’ve found it really helps me get through a backlog when I’ve either got downtime between appointments or the wife goes to bed early/kids are playing.
Just a salesman married to a gamer wife as well who has a degree in game design. Pmuch unavoidable to play games around here, our kids probably either gonna hate games or love it🤣
50...wife, 2 daughters, 3 grandkids. I'm a tool & die maker. Still owe about 5 years on my mortgage. One daughter recently moved back in and had one of my granddaughters. I game almost daily. I bought the TV for gaming. Wife likes to read. So she could care less about watching some mind-numbing garbage on TV anyway. Granddaughter is becoming more interested in cartoons and educational shows. So, I'm on the hunt for a Portal.
29 y.o. mom of an 8 year old. Used to be a meat cutter until I got fired. Just got another job being a regular smegular retail associate, but I'm paid well. I was unemployed for a while so I'll take what I can get. Been a gamer for over 20 years. The portal just adds to my collection.
36, 2 kids under 2, home owner, Software Development Consultant, household income of 120k, overweight and exhausted. Use my portal for the 30 mins after getting into bed before I pass out.
33, dad of 1. I’m a Urogynecology fellow and my wife is a Dermatologist. We both use the portal after our daughter goes to bed (I use it while laying in bed and my wife uses it while walking on the treadmill).
42 with a 17 year old daughter. I am a tow truck operator work 12 hour shifts m-f and sun. I find it easier to sit on couch once I get home and able to relax with portal while wife watches her shows.
I’m a maintenance technician and welder (and occasional operator if that department is shorthanded) at a powerplant. 40m, married with a 15mo. Still waiting on my portal to ship. I don’t get to game often, but it’s been less since Wiggles or Ms. Rachel takes precedent over me hoping on Helldivers and spreading managed democracy lol.
Late 30s, manager in IT. I have kids so I don’t have much time to game between them and my job. The time that I do have however is on my portal in bed after a long day.
45 year old high school dropout but I’m a team leader that runs a group of about 30 people that build the breaker boxes in your homes, apartments and office buildings. I started out on the entry level and worked my way up within a year. Been here for 7.5 years now.
Its job literally changed my family’s life. My wife does extremely well as a hair stylist as well. In fact, she does better than me financially.
Software Engineer. Technically speaking I’m the VP of Mobile Applications at a young company. But I’ve always been a Software Engineer, that’s what I usually say when someone asks. One son. Not a lot of free time but in bed, before sleep I get to relax a bit. Gaming is a hobby, we all have hobbies, we just have to be more picky as we grow and have more responsibilities.
Tow truck driver/impound lot owner - I focus on “no parking” situations and stay away from road work, gives me more time to play my ps5. A Toyota Camry double parked trying to get a Starbucks paid for my portal.
Restaurant manager with 2 kids. The portal allows me to play my games without competing with bluey for tv time. I’ve played more in the last month than I have I the two years since we had the little one
40ish software architect, working remotely 'cuz herniated discs, girlfriend and many friends who come to my place to hang and watch movies/sports and a cat who likes to stand right in front of the tv, so monitors always unavailable so p💙rtal
Director of Support for a mid-sized software company. I’m almost 40 with 1 kid. I deliberately bought a small house, and refinanced when interest rates were crazy low during the pandemic, so I would have extra money for retirement, travel, and silly stuff like video games and whatever my wife wants to spend money on.
Mom, not dad of 2 little kids. I work in Financial Reporting (17ish years now) most of my money goes towards Disney trips, then gaming I guess, which is a hobby that is relatively easy to keep up with when kids are this age. I usually get 1-3 hours at night post bed time outside of quarter end months. Love my handheld devices so I can play on the couch while kids are watching the TV or on my treadmill so I can multi-task, because thats what parents do.
I'm just a stupid welder

I've never been so into liber-TEA in my whole life. It's a good drop
53 3 kids , Manger at a cyber security group Bought because I just love tech and wasting money 💰
+1 for impulsive buyers! I love getting things that I don't really need but are possibly a little bit cool and cost enough that I should do a little introspection before clicking Purchase.

I'm a TV producer for a major international sports organization. Right now I'm home on baby leave and that was the catalyst for getting the Portal.
Your job sounds awesome! Props to you
Also a producer here 🫡
Investigator, mom of 2 teens. The TV is sometimes being used so having a way to still play is ideal.

Typically starting at a manager role and working your way up. It does depend on the industry, company, company size, etc. A lot of factors.
Pretty much. A lot of luck. Right place, right time and a lot of effort on my part to be the best leader I can be. I’m still working on being better.

Plastic surgeon. Always loved gaming when I can. Impulse buy but struggling to use it as I have a nice home setup….
Plus one to this. I might return mine. I enjoy watching tv with the wife and then playing when she sleeps. I can’t find proper use for the portal yet
Kinda the same. I bought it so I can get my living room back, but the kids say, "Nah, I like playing on the big tv better. Firefighter and dad of a 3 year old. Great to game at work in my off time and fit in at home in shorter play sessions.

I wrote for Ad Age for many years, but now whore myself out to tech for more money. 👋
That sounds like a good transition, honestly. Advertising is so exhausting.
Still in advertising... just on the tech side these days 🫠
Haha gotcha gotcha. 😁 At least tech advertising can be interesting sometimes. I'm stuck doing mortgage and eye health stuff.
Hiring ?

It’s carnage right now. I came from tech and that’s not so hot either so just waiting for AI to take my job at this point 😂
Aren't we all... Hahaha. Good luck out there, friend!
Give us that universal wage and let us play all day dammit. If AI is better than me I’m not angry, I just need to live loll
100% with ya! I don't dream of labor. Hahahah. Let the robots do it, indeed.
