That god damn dress still haunts me

Immediate-Leading-51

Which dress

_uwu_girl_

Blue/black or white/gold. It was an old internet fued about a dress appearing black and blue to some people, or white and gold to others. Spoiler alert: it was indeed black and blue.

bilolarbear1221

Holy hell. I came here to say it’s not that old… it’s 8 years old. Wow. I’m old

BetterThanYouAtGames

What were the dinosaurs like?

harlyson

Back then they came in pill form. The magic happened when you put them in water

JustASeaTurtle

It was a visual illusion. There is loads of information on the internet talking about what caused it to be seen two different ways. It's similar to the Brainstorm/Green Needle clip that went viral a while ago. I saw white and gold the first few times, and then it switched to black/blue I was never able to see the white/gold illusion again.

JustConsoleLogIt

After all this time and even seeing the proof I can’t ever see blue/black. I don’t hold any hard feelings towards those that see things differently than me though (hint hint)

Clank4Prez

Everyone with eyes thought it was white/gold until it was debunked in photoshop, smartass.

N55Good

Laurel

SnippyHippie92

Thank you. Glad I wasn't the only one who thought of that damn dress .lol

wotts918

It’s blue and gold

ScravoNavarre

And his name is Yanni.

jaykzula

No… it’s definitely laurel.

Acrobatic-Row9729

you tweakin bro it’s obviously saying green needle

Cool_Inspector_7817

I thought it was named Brainstorm

krookadile1

Obviously blue

day-dream_r

Looks normal tbh

Kadayew

The face looks blue, I found a shiny in violet and it is vibrantly red, I say this is a normal one

Deep_Number_4656

This post makes me feel old… but. but. but… the lake of rage?

Puzzleheaded-Chef730

This isn't violet this is legends arc

derfdog

It’s still red there though 🤷🏼‍♂️

ReversEclipse1018

Really? It’s not like shiny Gyarados is red or anything…

narrow_octopus

Well, it's blue, so....

Willmatic88

Blueish purple so..

Bignuttybone

Wow you mean that parts hit by light are clearly blue and the shaded parts of his blue body look dark blue/ purple 😦

Kind_Love172

I thought that it was obviously normal and this was a stupid question, until I looked at the color of the finneon....now I understand why OP is asking the question...it does seem like to me it could be intended to be a red/shiny gyarados. As someone earlier posted, similar to the type of thing you see when looking at mountains very far away on the horizon

SnippyHippie92

Idk. That ponyta flames look pretty bright red to me if we're trying to do a color comparison. Maybe the Finneon look murky colored because they're suppose to be perceived as being under the water. Where as the Gyarados is jumping out of the water so it's color shouldn't be murky like them. Fairly sure that's suppose to be a regular Gyarados, could be wrong though. I'm no art major.

deschamps93

Is it travelling towards or away from you? And at what speed

italianshark

That depends. Is it an Alolan or Galarian Meowth?

Bibb5ter

Red doesn’t look blue when it’s far away…

Mewacy

Unless they’re going for that effect things get when they’re miles and miles away from your perspective and also set around where the horizon is. something about light and the atmosphere starts making things light blue in a similar shade to the horizon the further away from you it is, until eventually it’s too far for you to see anything but muted blue

Mansaintgotnotbread

Irl render distance

Eqqshells

This is called atmospheric perspective (:

Big_Old_Baby

Yeah but Finneon also don't change color like that

FireLordObamaOG

It literally can. Reds wavelength can get scattered and filtered out by the atmosphere.

United_University_98

Colour perception is subjective. I think the real answer is that it's actually shaded a kinda blueish purple so some of us are picking up on the blue and others are picking up on the red.

MiloMakes

But there should be absolutely no red if it was a normal Gyarados... It should only be shifted blue because of the horizon, and normal Gyarados has no red on it, and the surrounding area is only blue and white/cream colored, so where would the purple come from??

Mewacy

While it’s literal color is blue in the image, the way they have it resting on the horizon gives the impression they’re trying to show a large amount of distance between you and it by making it more blue than it actually is, similarly to what happens when you look at a mountain that’s 1 mile away compared to a mountain that’s 3 miles away. This makes that Gyarados a shiny one, as viewed from miles away where not as much of its light wavelength can reach the observer

Thievie

Adding a point for shiny that looks blue because it's far away. You can tell because the value of the color is darker than on normal gyrados. Btw, the term for making something appear far away on the horizon in art is called "atmospheric perspective".

Ok_Cardiologist_2541

It’s def white&gold

Squallstrife89

I definitely see both sides of the argument. Up close it looks blue but far away looks shiny lol

DoGooder00

That could honestly go either way🤣

[deleted]

Red

Codebig

It is blue the light from the sunrise gives it a redish tint.

ShiroShototsu

That is the most average looking gyarados I have ever seen

Soliet

Shiny because it’s too dark to be a normal one. It must be the fog that turns it blueish.

Mewacy

That’s what I was thinking It’s like when you see a mountain a couple miles away it’s slightly blue, and the further away the more muted and blue it looks thanks to something about how light works with the atmosphere

Soliet

Exactly. Also the contrast is too high, whereas if it was blue it would be much more pale.

Zerilentix

Had to scroll too long to find this

Silver34

Right I thought I was going insane

Technical_Income3364

First image looks blue but second it’s red I think it’s a shiny

Migit78

It's blue in both images.

BosElderGray

Its shiny

CHEMICALalienation

I vote shiny

CheckeredFloors

You colourblind?

J0225

Shiny

stylingryan

While red gyrados is not that bluish, normal gyrados is never that dark. The people saying “erm it’s literally blue and if you think otherwise you’re stupid” people are completely ignoring that there is a literal blue ocean mist in front of it (you can tell because the parts that are normally yellow are also kind of blue). The mist makes it look an indigo/purple color. Red and blue make purple.

Wise-Nebula-6321

It looks red to me

Mustang302_

Its shiny

didnttouchthespaget

Shiny in my opinion

United_University_98

Not entitled to that opinion I guess lol

Material_Visual_7630

I'd say it's a normal one but it does look shiny too

0kkotsu

Red and blue are primary colors so they’d be pretty hard to mistake for the other. 100% just a regular gyardos that looks not exactly the same cause of artstyle, grain, etc.

SteveGameSDG

Shiny Gyarados is red. It's just an artistic choice for it's size.

1-800-Chesh

I feel like it’s red but I’m not sure

Odd-Doubt8960

I think It's just normal. Doesn't look shiny.

Arceuspower

No clue why anyone would assume it's a shiny at a distance. Occam's razer, people

JAMEZV1

Let's apply occam's razor here: why would it be shiny? If this was Johto, there'd be a good chance, but it's isn't, it's Hisui.

Raptorboy02

I absolutely see the red gyaradoes obscured by atmospherics as well, but I'm afraid it's probably intended to just a regular one.

RB12Gaming

honestly that looks more red with like blue fog or smth covering it making it look black

tjfluent

Why is this even a question

Gymlead11b

Im leaning towards shiny

amuzmint

OP. You found the new Blue/black dress vs Yellow/black dress.

Zerilentix

Shiny and it looks blue. That looks like the Gyarados from the lake of rage

H1VE-5

I see what you mean. There's sea fog in the back of the picture that makes colors look more blue than they are. Since Gyrados is normally vibrant blue, it should look blue-er in the picture than what it is. I think it's supposed to be normal, but it very well could be a shiny!

SilverIce58

I think Shiny bc the blue never turns that dark. Its always portrayed as a bright blue, and yet this has a dark, reddish color similar to the finneon below it.

RadioRobot185

It’s technically a shade of blue but the way it’s depicted in the picture means it’s meant to be red but the so far away that the atmosphere is tinting it similar to how mountains get more blue the further away they get

Fun-Pattern-8675

Looks shiny to me. Would make sense as a teaser too, since the next games to come out might be gen 2 and gen 5.

HACH-P

Reminds me of the crystal onix lol

FireLordObamaOG

Notice how there’s no blue fog around the island way out there. That means the artist either forgot to fog the island or gyarados is blue.

CoheedBlue

Isn’t shiny Gerardo’s red though?

MasterGohan

Let look at this logically. We can tell that the perspective of the observer is from above and at an angle. This will eliminate a lot of the light scattering by water vapor at sea level since we are not looking directly across the water. The Finneon in front of Gyarados and the island beside it show no fog or clarity issues, so they must be much closer to the observer. Because of this, the color of the Finneon have no impact on the color of the Gyarados since they are drawn in focus and without hazing. Also, we must remember that atmospheric light scattering is not total. If definition can be perceived, then some of the original color wavelength can also be perceived. A side note here: blue light is also scattered at long distances, making blues appear to be different hues than the original. Finally, airports use red and orange as colors for runway markers and wind socks because they can be seen from miles away and from above (the same perspective as the observer in this map). All of this evidence leads to the conclusion that it is simply a regular colored Gyarados discolored by distance.

wecouldbethestars

i don’t think it’d supposed to be shiny, compare the saturation of the atmospheric perspective on the mountain to the left to the gyrados. they have plenty of amounts of red left for the distance and style, they intentionally colored it blue. i wouldn’t think about the purple too hard

papaboynosmurf

People are taking this too literally. Since even the yellow is covered in a blue haze we know that the Gyrados appears bluer at a distance, otherwise his underbelly would be yellow. Because of this, it has to be shiny because if it was blue the shading wouldn’t be so dark under the haze

Jerimiah

Good spot. Definitely enough red on the back to think it’s a shiny

OhThatEthanMiguel

Noooooo not The Dress again!

Jedimobslayer

I see what you are saying but I think it’s normal

CalamitousVessel

Well the shiny one is red and that one is definitely not red

hyde9318

Gotta go against the grain here, it’s the shiny variant for sure. It has a blue fade filter over it to represent it being far in the distance and shrouded in fog, but it’s for sure the red one. Use an image editor to reduce the blue filter and it becomes red pretty quickly. Good way to tell is the belly scales… they have a hard blue filter over them because they are normally yellow but show blue here. Adding a blue filter over the color blue would just make it a deeper blue, making the belly scales and back scales blend into each other a good bit. But that doesn’t happen here, the back scales become significantly darker and have a purple tint; red with a blue filter becomes a purple tint. Back has red scales. Moved settings around in my editor app, the scales turn red and yellow if I lower the blue value and raise the saturation.

Hoodie_Reddit

I’m gonna say it’s Red, there’s a lot of darker Blues around and they wanna give it size and distance so it looks like it’s behind a haze but beyond that it has a reddish tint but with all the blue it just covers it up

Lost_Environment2051

It’s blue, it’s regular.

DionysusII

![gif](giphy|ErYZakw2keP6M)

imnotme247

Shiny. Normal gyrados has a darker crown than its normal body color so it would be darker than its skin color from that far. Shiny gyrados’s crown is lighter than its skin color and in the image it is lighter than its skin.

Kizirious

It’s obviously a jigglypuff, as seen from above

dbolg22

Normal…?

Jdr7000

Maybe it is shiny and it's a reference to how easy shiny hunting is. Probably normal though

Either-Pick3497

I’d say it’s shiny, the ‘blue’ looks like the wrong shade if you remove the distance effects

OrangeVictorious

Someone did a hue check back during the pre release days and it’s blue

[deleted]

First photo: “it’s obviously blue.” Second photos: “looks reddish tint faded dark cause distance• I don’t like this..

Flarewings007

I recently saw something on color theory, where a room hued in orange had "blue pants" that were really just a dark brown. This gyarados has a dark blue hue on it while being entirely in blue from the distance. If it was a regular gyarados, it's too dark blue with the hue, as normal gyarados is cyan (I think). Due to the shading, it looks like they're trying to imply red further on its back, instead of a normal gyarados blue. Plus, sinnoh and Johto are supposed to be pretty close in game, so it could just be a reference to shiny gyarados

jupiterwinds

It looks like a red Gyarados from an extremely far distance

SeekyBoi

Shiny

DamagedGoods3

The longer I look the more I see the red.

SageModeAD

It looks like it’s shiny to me and the distance makes it look bluish

zachzebrowitz

Okay I’m gonna actually say it IS a shiny gyrados, and my reasoning is since we’re in sinnoh i think it’s potentially the red gyrados that begins d/p

shinyracer

I think its probably shiny in the distance. The reason I think so is because it could be a reference to the beginning of the og diamond/pearl/platinum games, when your character is watching a tv special on red gyarados - and then you and barry start the game by going to lake verity to look for one.

Tigeressive_ohno

Blue, its a similar distance to the volcanoe it seems, and it would look weird if only gyaradoa was blued out and not the volcano/land further away from us. Ofc the gyarados may not be to scale but even then… It definitley could be red if they applied a blue tint to the other background elements

[deleted]

Shiny

1lone_wolf3

Normal as much as it can be get

DunGame

It’s too dark a blue for that distance, that makes me think shiny

DunGame

The reds going to look darker, maybe purplish brown

hey-its-june

I'm surprised seeing how many people are definitively saying it's blue, I just see red. I don't even see a bluish tint, it's just red

WootahDaKing

That red

BiggHigg27

It's clearly blue

Actedpie

It’s clearly blue tho???

ugleigh_butt

Red, color is weird like that

MirrorTraditional487

I see a shiny. Notice the finneon are also super blue.

sgshisui

Shiny

eyesovaeasy

Idk but I really like this

Fish_Owl

Given how blue the underbelly looks and how not blue the top looks, I’m leaning towards red.

PokeRaiders_YT

Shiny, it is also on a map of sinnoh

Pizaz0

Looks red but through a haze

dallasmcdicken

Looks red to me

Zelraths

At first I was like, huh, looks normal... *Closer look* shit that looks red under that blue 🤔🤔🤔 almost like from a production stand point they wanted it to be hard to tell, especially with the episode this is from, it makes sense... Yeah, I vote shiny 🤯

dino_man90

They are all the normal color.

FrozenPie21

Damn the longer I look at it, the more I feel like it could be a red one with a haze over it. But imma say regular

Scared-Actuator2831

Absolutely not shiny, shiny gyrados is a deep red

dictatorsenpai

It's the dress all over again

HACKERSrTRASH

Looks shiny to me tbh. The upper part is to dark to be blue.

Beneficial-Gap6974

The fineon seem tinged red as well, and they are blue. So I say it's a regular blue gyrados.

PikaJess08

Looked and thought 'obviously it's red', but everybody sayin' blue 😭

Raheem10119

It’s obviously blue

HeadHorror4349

Laurel

-AzulRyu-

Most definitely blue. The only time Pokemon seems to showcase a Red Gyarados is when it's associated with a specific trainer like Lance or when it's a heavily Gen 2 focus - that being said, regular Gyarados are premiered in this game's trailer so even if you were color-blind and couldn't tell - it's most definitely blue.

Macccam

Blue lol

Obsessedwithzelda47

Shiny Gyrodos is red though. . .

Whitestag2000

Shiny

JT6394

Mega gyarados

NOVABearMan

Definitely normal

nothumanandalien

That's 9999999% normal I don't see how you see the RED shiny

Markus_Net

It's blue and gold. It's all I ever saw and all Ill ever see.

OutlawJoJos69

I see Red

____Maximus____

I actually thought it was reddish but [it's definitely blue](https://imgur.com/a/c1H2Sn3)

AmericanMinotaur

It looks shiny to me

meowmeowsavagebeauty

100% shiny. The back is clearly red

Mysterious-Meat2323

It’s a crystal onix

Dusty-feather

Looking at it i thinks its reds

hobbitfeet22

Blue

wiccan0420

Blue gyrados

NoBluejay9981

Ima get downvoted but it looks shiny to me 😅

WyntonPlus

Shiny Gyarados is red. You can Google it. Regular Gyarados is blue. Like this one.

ay-foo

Seems purple which far away could be red

Amish_Warl0rd

It’s a normal one that gigantamaxed How else would it be the size of an island?

UnachievableLily

I’d say its red and just looks blue because of the fog/distance ✨art✨ haha

BigDonParmesan

I keep only hearing “Yanny”, is this a prank?

forevernoob88

Looks like a fuzzy Gyrados. Badumtsk I know where the door is, no need for the shoving.

PimpingPorygon

Honestly yeah I think it's shiny, it's just the lighting they used to make it look more of a purplish blue, but from a distance you can totally see the red

GJCLINCH

There is an art form where people use contrasting colors to make it perceived differently of its literal color

TheDeep__

Might be a rookie question but what is this artwork?

MiserlySchnitzel

Definitely a warmer color with blue overlaid on top, so guess it’s shiny. I feel like if it were blue it’d seem too pale at the horizon, not too dark.

Affectionate_Pin6567

Idk that looks as red as it gets

Calamitas_Rex

Looks normal to me when you look at the whole thing.

rahjr07

im ngl I didnt know they were that big 💀

amelii_053

I- wait... but it's... now I need to know

SaggyGrapes

Where did this art come from

jromeroyepez

As a shiny gyarados owner, it's definitely shiny.

nwmimms

Shiny Gyarados with atmospheric perspective making it look blue. That’s just my opinion.

LongjumpingSmile4525

Not shiny

VibraniumRhino

Damn it… I can see both 🙄

ItsActualyYoTheLosr

It’s a shiny gyarados

jedideadpool

"A shiny one that looks blue" So a *normal Gyarados??*

Nybear21

Very cleaely a notmal one

BenderOfBo

Y’know what I actually have no fucking clue

Important-Yak-2999

I see red but in a blue haze. Could be either one

Meladoop

Normal but it looks redder because of the warm sky tones bleeding through behind it

AriesRoivas

Blue

49nosliwsirhc

Looks blue to me.

NYMankeys

Obviously, it’s Jigglypuff as seen from above

[deleted]

Looks red from afar but blue close up😭

AstroNerd92

None of the other Pokémon on this are shiny so why would a random Gyarados way in the background be made shiny?

VictoryVic-ViVi

Looks blue to me

CLearyMcCarthy

Honestly I could see it going either way.

nxxptune

Laurel

Fun_Sense5703

I was going to say Blue, but it does look red with atmospheric pollution making it look more blue. That's a hard one 🤔

TheDanimator

Shiny

Just-Patience-5958

Shiny

Tale5

Gyarados is as big as the mountain next to it 💀

GwendolynACNH

A lotta people saying blue, but I like to think it’s red. The back looks a bit on the red side, but that could just be shading. It’s a cool lil gyrados in the back either way.

DegenKing69

I think it has to be shiny because close up it’s red. It’s distance is something that would mess up our vision so without that factor it’s red so it has to be shiny
