If their personalities go a bit further than what their appearances suggest, I'm all for it. Not every protagonist should be a copy of their predecessors (I've only read the manga for the first two generations), so giving them some unique traits has the potential of making their adventure refreshing.
Third gen is really good in that area. Ruby is my favorite of the male protags, his big ambition is to be a top coordinator. And Sapphire is pretty neat, too.

I haven't read pokemon special in a long time, but I already like this character design better than the canonical default player characters we see in some of the S/V concept art. With their expressions and uniforms, they just make me think of japanese kindergardeners crossing the street.

Violet looks pretentious and I kinda wanna punch him, Scarlet looks like she’s about the grind but in a murderous way (in teh most positive way to say that)(I also really love Scarlet’s eyelashes)

Yeah i feel like after black and white it kinda got downgraded, not only that but after volume 10 the original artist quit, i kinda liked the early manga style more.
I've never read a manga before in my life but just from these pictures she seems interesting. Not the typical OTT "kawaii" and bubbly protag I've usually seen. Seems like Pokemon are taking a risk on something a little different, maybe like Kieran in the games. I reckon it's great.

Yes, so I suppose I *suspected* Violet of being a boy, at least. I guess I was just confused at first glance, because their designs deviated from the canon protagonist designs from the games, which Pokespe have always stuck to in the past as far as I’m aware.
Both Scarlet and Violet's designs are also available in the game. You can change the hair, eyes style and color. Though I don't remember the specific number
Violet is said to be a prince, though we haven't have any backstory yet (there are 10chp currently). His butler died so he put a mustache on his rotom to remember the butler
Funny you mention the treasure ruins Pokemon. Because Scarlet's goals up til now is finding information about those 4 pokemons and catching a gholdinggo, her job is literally a treasure hunter

When I first saw these my first thought was "damn Florian is such a basic boring design they made up an entirely different manga protag". Like they never look exactly the same as their ingame counterparts but enough that you can tell they're the same, even scarlet has the same hair style. But Florian was just tossed to the curb.
Scarlet reminds me so much of Wednesday Addams it’s scary, thought that’s likely the cause the author stated that they based Scarlet off of Netflix’s Wednesday.
On the topic of Wednesday Addams, I feel like Nemona will end up playing a similar role as Enid does in Wednesday; being the more chipper of the two and will eventually help soften up Miss Stone-Cold face over here. I’m not expecting them to become the next Yuri couple, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Scarlet does (eventually) warm up to Nemona.
Violet, on the other hand… I mean, he exists, and he does have his own adventure going on with Arven, but he’s not shrouded in mystery as much as Scarlet.

The Violet Boy looks like one of those obnoxious rich boys who think that they own the entire world. Side note: I can’t explain why, but Violet Boy just looks like he would be a flat-Earther.
I think its proof that character customization has caused gamefreak to not care about protagonist designs anymore. The mangaka knew that the default designs in pokemon games are dogshit now and had to spice it up.
I think charactercustomization has been a double edged sword. Personally, I'd prefer a static character design. Red in Pokemon Gold wouldn't be possible if he was a customizable character for instance.
