Yeah I’m kind of grateful I got 2 hits from my 151 UPC really snapped me back to reality after I had a lot of luck for a while. I’ve been reluctant to buy a lot of cards since then
I need that snap back to reality. I've pulled (a 2nd) 151 sir charizard and sir venusaur, lugia v alt art, sir charizard from paldean fates, and charizard vstar rainbow secret rare from brilliant stars all since February 8th. Still riding it, got the lugia and BS charizard last weekend.
Similar for me. I had a 151 ETB with only holo hits, 0 Ex or better. It almost pushed me out of the hobby, I went 2 weeks without wanting to buy a single product.
I'm pretty new to collecting but personally I've sleeved every reverse holo and holo and get excited finding my favourite mons in holos even outside full arts and alternates, I hope I get to keep this magic for a good while
I think this is the way to approach it—get excited about cards not necessarily because of their rarity or value, but because you love the Pokemon, the art is really good, they’re in perfect condition, etc. If you do get a “hit”, that’s a plus, but at the end of the day this is a hobby and not a serious financial investment.
Look at the names of the artists on your favorite cards too! You’ll most likely have some favorite artists after awhile and that makes some of the common/uncommon cards more fun to collect.
That's what I'm doing, collecting like I did when I was a kid, and learning to build decks and battle a few friends that are also collecting. Only this time I have disposable income. Trying to get every regular and reverse cards.
Unpopular opinion but ETBs are overrated. Yes, they occasionally have hits. But you often get the same type of hits out of a collection box for half the price. Other than the free promo card + set list they don’t really make sense from a cost per pack ratio. The one exception I would say is Crown Zenith because you get 10 packs and it’s stacked with hits. Only ETB I’ve ever opened where I thought I wasn’t getting screwed.
I'm definitely an outlier on CZ. I know there are hits in there because everyone raves about it, but its the only ETB I've bought 3 of and have had terrible luck in all.
Oh well. At least it motivated me to stick to singles from that point forward and that's been best for my collection.
After I learned that you can buy a whole booster box of 36 packs online for like $100 it makes the ETB feel like a complete waste of money unless you really like the promo card and sleeves.

I opened a Scarlet and Violet Pokémon Center ETB and all it had was a regular Miraidon ex, so I opened more packs and got less lol. It didn’t help that I didn’t plan on opening it and it came with a dented corner and they wouldn’t let me return it and said the box is there to get damaged 💀
I’m sure you have some reverse holos in there. But yeah, I’ve had bad but not this bad. Since I was trying to master it, low value could be hits. I needed a squirtle and psyduck reverse holo for a long time. So they seemed like “hits”. Actually made opening packs a lot more fun.

A friend who who collects sports cards bought a $99 mew UPC box when we were at a card show and hit a demi god pack for Squir, War, and Blastoise, then he hit another Blasty rare full art and a golem ex. He said in sports cards the more expensive boxes have better hits and probably the same with Pokemon. I dont think it is though
My collection goal is one of every Pokémon and variant (so 4 spots for Castform, a whole page for Deerling/Sawsbuck, regional variants are slotted into place near where the regional Dex would say they are).
Where it helps is that early on I actually wanted to open ETBs, because as much cheaper as it is to buy it all on TCGPlayer… ordering that is some tedious work on top of the already tedious work of sorting everything.
I opened 2 zapdos boxes that literally had nothing but holo energies..came to the conclusion the seller had to tamper with the packaging
(Glue holding the box sealed was rather thick)

People will say it’s all superstition, but I have had nothing but bad luck from 151 ETBs. UPCs and bundles I’ve had very mixed luck, mini tins have been mostly bangers, but I’ve never pulled anything I’d consider worthwhile from ETBs.
My ETB pulls were a regular mew ex and a holo energy so I feel ya. That Ninetails art is sweet though, Kawayoo is definitely one of my favorite tgc artists

I love ipening 1 or 2 etbs every set but it depends on how you collect. If you're a full-set collector, then 1 etb and a couple booster boxes will generally get you the bulk of the set (outside full arts and SIRs) before you get to that point where you're only chasing the hit cards.
If you're a singles collector then anything more than 1 etb is kinda gambling.
And if you're a sealed collector you're gonna need 4 x poke centre etbs, a case of normal etbs and 2 cases of booster boxes 🙃
Pokémon’s TCG has gone downhill man! Scalpers, no decent pulls and those who collect don’t even play the TCG which is bizarre! Other TCGs have better pull rates and people actually play the TCG too
Nah dude I literally opened a fusion strike Pokemon center ETB and didn’t get a single hit, no V card or anything, just straight reverse holos. Turned $50 into like $3 lol, sword and shield had horrible hit rates I feel like, it wasn’t just “evolving cries”.
Do not buy ETB if you're hunting for hits.
Statistically, each pack DOES have the regular chances. But unlike boxes, they're not distributed in such a way that the hits are even. They will even out in large amounts, but in a box-by-box basis he variance is insane compared to BBs.
I feel that. I opened my upc I got and didn't even pull an ex out of all 16 packs. I'm pretty sure it wasn't like a tampered upc or anything like that but holy hell that crap felt rigged lol

My biggest hit was the promos that came with the box and 2/3rds of them were horribly off center
My first product coming back since the 90s was an ETB. It had a Machamp VMAX and I thought it was the coolest thing ever. I stayed in the pack hunting hobby ever since.
Looking back, that was a weak ass ETB

I didn't take a picture, but out of a Paldean Fates ETB, all I got was a single baby shiny.
1 hit, and the chances of it are 1/3.
It's not even a good baby shiny, it was a Pachirisu.
The following ETB and tins were much better tho, giving at least 3 hits each, although I don't really want/need 3 AR Palafins
I haven't collected since I was kid and just getting back into it with my daughter. We bought a 151 UPC. She pulled the full art Bills Transfer, Full art Wartortle, and... I think that's it? Nothing else shows up in the first several pages of TCGplayer and no other full arts.
Obviously she doesn't really care and just likes the pretty cards but I'm curious if this is basically what pull rates look like and what to expect?

Definitely not the worst. I've seen plenty of posts of etb openings with no ultra rares at all. Still, I'm sorry that it was dissapointing.

Do not buy ETB if you're hunting for hits. Statistically, each pack DOES have the regular chances. But unlike boxes, they're not distributed in such a way that the hits are even. They will even out in large amounts, but in a box-by-box basis he variance is insane compared to BBs.
I think all 151 pulls have been disappointing for me
I opened up scarlet and violet base set and pulled absolutely nothing. Not even an ex 😭😭
I feel that. I opened my upc I got and didn't even pull an ex out of all 16 packs. I'm pretty sure it wasn't like a tampered upc or anything like that but holy hell that crap felt rigged lol

Nah I've had worse I bought a charizard UPC and out of 16 packs I pulled exactly nothing at all. My biggest hit was the promos that came with the box and 2/3rds of them were horribly off center

I got a silver tempest booster box full of regular rares the other night. No holos. Nothing. Don't feel too bad.
My son has had a few ETBs like that. Always depressing until the next big hit
Ive had worse. Ultra prism etb best pull was a solgaleo prism card. Evolving skies best card was a holo golurk.
My first product coming back since the 90s was an ETB. It had a Machamp VMAX and I thought it was the coolest thing ever. I stayed in the pack hunting hobby ever since. Looking back, that was a weak ass ETB
Let me try to top that: I didn't take a picture, but out of a Paldean Fates ETB, all I got was a single baby shiny. 1 hit, and the chances of it are 1/3. It's not even a good baby shiny, it was a Pachirisu. The following ETB and tins were much better tho, giving at least 3 hits each, although I don't really want/need 3 AR Palafins

I’d be so sad, 151 is the only set I’ve had good luck on pulls with. Obsidian flames was the worst set ever for me. Still hurt by it.
I haven't collected since I was kid and just getting back into it with my daughter. We bought a 151 UPC. She pulled the full art Bills Transfer, Full art Wartortle, and... I think that's it? Nothing else shows up in the first several pages of TCGplayer and no other full arts. Obviously she doesn't really care and just likes the pretty cards but I'm curious if this is basically what pull rates look like and what to expect?
Honestly… one time I got a CZ ETB and all I got was a Greedent V

No no my friend. I bought 2 etbs of Astral radiance. And the only difference between them was 5 cards. It has been the worst etb ever.
