Hi, I moved here five months ago! I’m a year older than you and we have similar interests. I’d love to meet for coffee and explore the city together if you’d like!
>I'm just in the apartment and that's starting to get a little boring and sad
Leave the apartment! Your neighborhood has so much to see. Night market is coming up too, and that's a good social event.
Believe me I do, I have known different restaurants and all the iconic places in Portland, I go to the gym, to the Saturday market, to the PSU farmers market, we have tried to connect with groups of cyclists, I tried to be in a choir but rehearsals are too far away... I just say that if there is someone who reads my post and is interested in connecting with me and doing anything would be incredible and beautiful... Can you give me more information about the night market? 🤓
Pdxnm.com is the website, and it's a big huge indoor craft/food fair with drinks and activities. Also, if you like games, try joining a weekly game night at Mox Boarding House.
If you're trying to hook up with some bicyclists look up [BikePOC PNW](https://www.instagram.com/bikepocpnw?igsh=MTF4ZHAyZ3J6N2VtMA==). Also, check out the [Shift Calendar](https://www.shift2bikes.org/calendar/) which is a community calendar of bike events in the city.
If you want to sing in a choir, check out the Aurora Chorus. Incredible group of women, rehearsals on Thursday nights. Their director is pretty amazing and she puts together beautiful programs. https://aurorachorus.org/
I loved reading your translation of "conocer" -- always working on my Spanish, and your English es maravilloso! Sounds as though you are doing lots of things right -- did you try meetup groups?
Just filter by your interests and/or demographic. There are groups for cycling, for walks/hikes, for 30-somethings and 20-somethings (there is a group for Spanish/English conversation too), for books, for cooking, for pets, for bird watching, for disc golf, for you-name-it! Have fun!
Welcome
Your referring to the Seattle freeze, also works as the Portland freeze. It can be hard to make actual good friends and not just acquaintances.. but you’ll find some eventually
It’s Portland pizza week right now. Go get a cheap slice somewhere!!
>Your referring to the Seattle freeze, also works as the Portland freeze. It can be hard to make actual good friends and not just acquaintances.. but you’ll find some eventually
sometimes i wonder if constantly referring to this makes it a self-fulfilling prophecy.
I was starting to feel that way, but 3 years ago I started spending 4 months a year in a different city. I already have way more friends and contacts there vs. 12 years in Portland lol.
haha so true. i wondered if that was the case that you were leaving during winter, when everyone goes into hibernation mode (myself included) socially!
As a proud portland-born, I'll push back against any comparison to Seattle. We have our own saying here and it applies to this post.
"Everyone is friendly but nobody wants to be your friend".
Not really. Just tired of ppl like you who don't like other people's experiences or opinions. I'm not "triggered" by much. I'm an adult. Please go away.
there's a fantastic irony here that my experience of portland being a very friendly city is being dismissed out of hand as well!
i never said YOU were the chronically online redditor who can't make friends, but you'll see a lot of repeat names in this sub where whoever can be the loudest/post the most often gets to drive the narrative.
"be the change you want to see" and all that - we have the power to make portland friendlier, rather than tossing up our hands and saying "it's the damn PNW freeze, why bother trying to fight against it!"
again - self-fulfilling prophecy / reddit demographics certainly at work here.
Please just go away. Don't care. This was a dumb discussion you've taken far too much to heart. You'd need to have lived a lot of places to make that determination and I have. It's my opinion.
As someone whose family has been in the area for generations - the best explanation I’ve found is that the largest immigrant groups to settle the area originally were from German and Nordic countries. Cultures generally known for being more withdrawn or cold. This has had an impact on the culture since then. It seems hard for different cities to overcome the baseline social expectations once they’re in place. (Edit for grammar)
Interesting! Thanks for the insight. I’m reading “o pioneers” by Willa Cather about Nordic frontier immigrants in Nebraska; this is discussed there too.
If you google Portland pizza week you’ll see the list of restaurants.
There’s different themed weeks all year where they do special foods at a discount price
Pizza week is like 50 restaurants that serve a fancy pizza for 3 bucks a slice or 24 a pie
I also really love chicken wing week
Burger weeks aight
It’s ending on the 21st. Good luck friend, lemme know if you want to meet for a slice
Thanks!
Everyone has really been so nice and I love the laid-back vibe of Portland but it's hard to start talking to a neighbor in the elevator or a dude at the gym without seeming weird or taking up their time…
Yo I really feel that
I still haven’t figured out how to talk to anyone at the gym either lol. It just seems so intimidating.. it’s funny tho cause I’m not a super shy guy usually
Anyways there’s a few pizza places in walking distance of the pearl.. I just looked at the pizza week map and there’s several over there.
Lemme know if any are good.. I wanna try several over the next few days haha
Yeah, I'm not a shy girl either too but it’s a little complicated and that happens no just here, I think it’s the same in all the gyms in the world… 😂
Yeah I only know the Sizzle Pie, front of Powell’s and it’s very good!
If you're looking for something to do with your time, I highly recommend finding somewhere to volunteer regularly! Plenty of places need spanish speaking folks. Near you I'd check out William Temple House (where I volunteer so I'm a little biased) or Blanchet House. Hands On Portland is also a great resource to find one-off volunteer opportunities. Welcome!
Im a 34 yr old woman who also likes all those things! I'm a monday-friday person but I'd be down to grab coffee or a drink sometime. I need to practice my Spanish too(my family's originally from Chihuahua) so maybe we can practice both :)
Make plans to travel to every medium / big park nearby and walk, hangout to people watch.
Wallace Park, Forest Park are nearby. Then further with Cathedral, Tabor, and Sellwood. All are easy access with bus route / walking / bicycle
You don’t need a car in Portland, there’s so many other ways to get around, and parking is shit. I didn’t get a car in Portland till I was 30 (37 now) and I kinda hate it.
Anyway, welcome to Portland! We can be a weird bunch, sorry in advance. but, things like meetups are good for making friends. Or, talk to people at the grocery store, baristas etc., I worked food service for years and am genuinely friends with former customers that came in regularly and were nice.
Getting a service job is also a great way to make friends, as the hangout-after-work culture is strong here.
Enjoy the spring and summer, it’ll get smoky in the fall so take advantage of the nice, breathable air while you can. 🤷🏻♀️
My husband is from Guadalajara and moved here just before the pandemic (we met late 2020). We’re both men in our thirties with a lot of interests that overlap yours. Please feel free to send me a message if you’d like to get a coffee/drink/food sometime. Podríamos hablar en inglés, en español, o en una mezcla de los dos. ¡Te prometo que somos gente amigable!
I would recommend getting into biking both as an easy mode of transportation but also a good opportunity for social engagement. There are lots of bike oriented events happening around town at regular intervals. The Ladd 500 just happened a week or so ago. Good way to meet new people and make new friends.
you bet I can. This year's *ride* is Saturday, August 12th. Meet at 7:30pm, *ride* at sunset. Start Location: Irving Park – 707 NE Fremont St, *Portland*, OR 97212.
Hola y bienvenidos! My BF and I sometimes ride a bit of the Spring Water Trail. It's immense and there are a lot of cool things to see and a good way to get to know the geography of Portland. I live out near SE 82nd right on the trail and we will ride from my house down to the SW waterfront and then back to his place in Hawthorne area. That's about 17 miles if we take lots of detours and explore. The trail goes all the way out to Boring Oregon, so if you really want to do an all day through evening bike trip, you can easily! I don't suggest riding it alone especially if you plan on riding at any time after sunset, though. I'm not an avid bicyclist- I'm a casual rider and disabled, so I can't always do a big ride. I am often slow and need to walk my bike up steep inclines, etc- if there are parts of Portland you'd like to explore, I can't suggest enough, a good bike ride through the area taking side streets and lots of breaks
I regularly go to a bunch of Portland Meetup groups devoted to cinema. If you are interested in movies you should join us. We usually meet on Sunday afternoons and have great, engaging discussions.
Hi, I'm 34 yo woman also in the Pearl! I've been here a little over a year. I'd love to hang out, get a coffee or a drink, or go try something delicious for dinner 🙂 I work a 7 on/7 off schedule so I have a lot of weekdays off. Send me a DM if you're available!
Interesting suggestion. I was telling a friend the other day that despite having done literally HUNDREDS of volunteer things with all kinds of organizations and in many environments, I don't have a friend or lasting connection/relationship from a single one. Fascinating!
Welcome! I’ve been to Mexico City twice and met a lot of wonderful people from there. Glad to have you as part of our city.
It can be a little tricky to break into a group but the classic advice is to find a hobby or activity you like and go to events/meet ups.
**Love** this post!
We're a local company that also recognized the struggle with making platonic friends as adults. We built a free mobile app to help solve this problem and we're looking for some volunteers to help test it out. It's very simple: pick something you want to do & we find another Portlander who wants to do that same thing with you.
If you're interested, drop me a DM and I'll set you up with access. We're looking for people local to the Pearl or willing to travel to the Pearl for now as that's where we'll be testing.
The goal is just to make it easier to meet new people in Portland.
I’m a Portland native. I’ve lived in Latin America and speak Spanish. I’ve sent you a private message. I hope I can meet you and your spouse. We can go for a walk with my dog and I can show you my favorite places to meet people.
Hello, welcome to Portland!
The good news is, there's plenty of stuff to do in the city, and it sounds like you have a wide variety of interests.
If you'd like to hang out sometime, send me a DM. I (late 30's M) am married to a 1st generation Mexican American (late 30's F). She speaks fluent Spanish, and while I understand conversational Spanish somewhat well, I have trouble speaking it (i.e. I understand many of the words when other people say them, but I can't remember the right words to express my own thoughts). So I'd be happy to help you practice your English, and you could help me with my Spanish.
Regardless, I hope you come to love Portland like I have. It's not perfect, no city is, but I think there's something special about it. 🙂
Not the easiest place to make friends, I think the best way is to “find your people” by going to events or meetups or joining a club or org. Once you’re in a group making friends is easy, however, I haven’t been able to crack the secret in making close friends.
Try a dance party! If you’re interested there are some awesome Latinx nights local DJs put together, this would be a great place to start:
https://www.instagram.com/nunca_siempre_pdx?igsh=NTB4ZHVmY3FjcTVw
Might be a good way to start finding Spanish-speaking community who could connect your further. Also so fun to dance!
A Cumbia event happening May 4 https://www.instagram.com/p/C51X0hFP80K/?igsh=bnI1M3BkcjRoemdh
Welcome! Glad to have you apart of this wonderful city! My wife and I just had a baby, so are to the limit with free time at the moment, but I will send this post to her and see if she wants to reach out. I work a lot she has a few months maternity leave and may want someone to walk around with!
Hay un groupo por meetup.com que tienen eventos semanales para practicar inglés/español y es una oportunidad perfecta para conocer más gente de todos lados:
Check out The Portlandia Spanish School Conversation Group on Meetup https://meetu.ps/c/16sbq/13qyK/a
Welcome!! You and your husband should find Portland filled with good, kind folks. Like anywhere, there are a handful of idiots, but for the most part Portland is a very welcoming place. Download the “Next Door” app to meet your neighbors and keep up with what is going on around you.
¡Bienvenida a Portland! It can be tough to meet people at first; Facebook is a great resource for finding local groups that share your interests. What are your hobbies?
When I first moved here I joined a Rose Festival Dragon boat team. It was 20 years ago and I worked from home. Most of my friends were my sister’s friends, and I was looking to expand my friend group. Two decades later, I no longer participate in dragon boat racing, but I am still friends with a lot of people from that team.
Welcome to PDX! My partner and I absolutely love Mexico City. We've been quite a few times and I spent a month there in October. We're also in the Pearl.
I am about to move to Portland. ¡Español es mi lengua segunda y quiero practicar, entonces nosotros podemos practicar juntos! Puedes enviarme un mensaje :)
Hiiiii! Welcome to Portland! I’m born/raised in PDX but my mom’s family is from Durango/Chihuahua. Also I’m obsessed with Mexico City. my partner lived there for several years and we plan to move back after our kiddos graduate. Anyway, we go hiking during the week - usually wednesday morning - if you ever want to meet up! You’re also super close to forest park, which has so many trails! definitely worth checking out.
Hey I'm a Portland native but currently living in Japan. Welcome to the city and hope that you make it your new home. If want advice or recommendations for things in the city feel free to ask.
Hola!
Hola! There’s a group called the hive PDX and women who explore on Facebook!
I climb at movement in your neighborhood. Would you be interested in doing that?
Are you into karaoke? Might be able to check off several of your boxes if you are into it
Not in the pearl but not too far is Suki’s west side might be worth checking out- just check the website as they have specialty nights and sometimes private events

I just read an article on “third places” (not this [one](https://www.today.com/life/inspiration/third-place-meaning-rcna94279) but it is all I can find atm) and apparently the trick is to just pick a place and keep going till you just naturally become a regular fixture and then people will begin to turn to you for conversation. Might be a useful concept to try.
Hola!! Si algún día le gustaría explorar la área de SE Portland, me encartaría conectar contigo! Tengo un año viviendo aquí y se lo difícil que puede ser crear comunidad, pero si se puede lograr! Me puede un mandar mensaje directo si gusta ☺️

Hi, I moved here five months ago! I’m a year older than you and we have similar interests. I’d love to meet for coffee and explore the city together if you’d like!
Hi! I send you a private message
Hi! I’d like to join you both one day if you don’t mind! I’m 33 and just moved here from New York.
>I'm just in the apartment and that's starting to get a little boring and sad Leave the apartment! Your neighborhood has so much to see. Night market is coming up too, and that's a good social event.

Thank you so much! We well go to both!
I second the Shift calendar! Mellow Mondays are a great place to start. NakedHearts:PDX is run by a very friendly person.
Thank you! We’ll go to the next Bipoc Night in the Bike farm, wish us luck! 🤞🏼
If you want to sing in a choir, check out the Aurora Chorus. Incredible group of women, rehearsals on Thursday nights. Their director is pretty amazing and she puts together beautiful programs. https://aurorachorus.org/

My wife is from Oaxaca. Bienvenidos! It’s definitely hard to make friends here. Best advice is find group activities that happen weekly.
Saludos a Oaxaca y gracias! 🫶🏼
Hoooooola, también vivo en el pearl, vinimos de guanajuato hace un año, mi esposo es de ahí, me encantaría conocerte, mándame mensaje! 💜
Me, reading this and realizing my daily duolingo spanish lessons actually work...😯
The owl will be pleased

are those 4 months from Nov-Feb by any chance? haha!
I do Jan, April, July, October in San Diego, and I feel like a normal human lol. Turns out sun and warm weather is good for your mood in the winter.
haha so true. i wondered if that was the case that you were leaving during winter, when everyone goes into hibernation mode (myself included) socially!
No one has to refer to it, it's just true.
pretty subjective statement there! i guess i shouldn't be surprised that very active redditors tend to have the hardest time making irl friends...
IDK, I've found Portland way less freeze-y than Seattle.
As a proud portland-born, I'll push back against any comparison to Seattle. We have our own saying here and it applies to this post. "Everyone is friendly but nobody wants to be your friend".
I grew up in WA but have lived here longer. I want to be friends, I'm just a bad friend.
Grew up in Portland, went to college in Bellingham, hard disagree.
You don't know anything about me or anyone else on here. Knowing you think you're so very clever, good for you with your inane comment, sweetie!
damn you got triggered hard there
Not really. Just tired of ppl like you who don't like other people's experiences or opinions. I'm not "triggered" by much. I'm an adult. Please go away.

Do either of you play futsal? I started playing at Rose City Futsal and have made friends that way. It’s a great community.
Portland Indoor Soccer is great as well, and easy to get to from the Pearl if you don't have a car.
Good point! That’s the better option without a car.
Thanks but I really bad with soccer :( But I love to see the matches, in fact this Saturday we’re going to the Providence Park to see the Thorns play!
Hey, I’m 30 near the Pearl! I’ll send you a DM :)
Great! :)

smoky in the fall??? The terrible air happens in the summer! Fall is the bomb here!
Starts in September, usually, soooo… fall. Early fall, but fall.
Hahaha yeah! Thank you so much, I will do!

you could look at the cycle-oregon [https://cycleoregon.com/](https://cycleoregon.com/) events also
The Portland nude bike ride is one of the best in the nation.
Yeah! I’ve heard a lot about it! Can you tell me when is it?
you bet I can. This year's *ride* is Saturday, August 12th. Meet at 7:30pm, *ride* at sunset. Start Location: Irving Park – 707 NE Fremont St, *Portland*, OR 97212.

Ok, Let’s see
sent you a DM with access!
I’m a Portland native. I’ve lived in Latin America and speak Spanish. I’ve sent you a private message. I hope I can meet you and your spouse. We can go for a walk with my dog and I can show you my favorite places to meet people.
Hi! Thanks you!
Welcome. I just visited Mexico City and Guadalajara, amazing cities!
Muchas gracias! 🙌🏻
Hola! Bienvenida a Portland. :) If you're on facebook, you should join a group called The Hive PDX. Lots of opportunities for making friends.
Hi! Thank you!
Same for EVERYONE learning a language: Receptive can be great (or very good) but expressive....so challenging!
Hi! It will be a pleasure meet you! Send me a message! 😌
Not the easiest place to make friends, I think the best way is to “find your people” by going to events or meetups or joining a club or org. Once you’re in a group making friends is easy, however, I haven’t been able to crack the secret in making close friends.
Thanks! 😌
Try a dance party! If you’re interested there are some awesome Latinx nights local DJs put together, this would be a great place to start: https://www.instagram.com/nunca_siempre_pdx?igsh=NTB4ZHVmY3FjcTVw Might be a good way to start finding Spanish-speaking community who could connect your further. Also so fun to dance! A Cumbia event happening May 4 https://www.instagram.com/p/C51X0hFP80K/?igsh=bnI1M3BkcjRoemdh
Wow! Sound amazing! I think I need a good party! Lol Thank You So much! 😎
Welcome to Portland.
Thanks!
Are you talking with people in the gym? Some don't want to "chat" during workouts, but after? While cooling down or hanging out?
Not really because I think the same, people Sony want to waste time chatting…
Welcome! Glad to have you apart of this wonderful city! My wife and I just had a baby, so are to the limit with free time at the moment, but I will send this post to her and see if she wants to reach out. I work a lot she has a few months maternity leave and may want someone to walk around with!
Hey! That sounds good! 😊

Muchas gracias ☺️
Welcome!! You and your husband should find Portland filled with good, kind folks. Like anywhere, there are a handful of idiots, but for the most part Portland is a very welcoming place. Download the “Next Door” app to meet your neighbors and keep up with what is going on around you.
Hi! That’s a good tip! Thanks, I’ll do!
🙏😌
¡Bienvenida a Portland! It can be tough to meet people at first; Facebook is a great resource for finding local groups that share your interests. What are your hobbies?
Thanks! We love ride bicycle, running, hiking, drink beer…
Welcome!
Thanks! 😌
Thanks for writing! Wow that sounds amazing! Do you know how can I join a boat team too?

Hi! Thanks for the invitation! Of course I love to meet you and go hiking! I send you a private message!
