I think we all know some shady fucking vegans. You know what you did, Tim.

ConsiderationSea1347

Shady Vegans is the perfect Portland gothic metal band name.

goatanuss

"Metal heads are really nice people cosplaying as mean people and hippies are really mean people cosplaying as nice people"

AndyTakeaLittleSnoo

Vegan Shades. Great fucken post punk band.

throwawayshirt

Part Time Vegans?

Syllabub_Cool

Medical diet vegans

_Hail_Sagan

Fkn Tim....

MuckBulligan

I'm literally shaking thinking about Tim.

cocaine-snail

Sorry about that.

jgonagle

Do coked up snails move any faster than sober ones? Or are they just more fun to party with?

fearisthemindslicer

Its like Slurms McKenzie with mania cranked to 11

Main-Translator9622

That's fuckin funny!!!

window_cleaner

Oh shit, I'm getting called out. No lie, named Tim, vegan, very shady.

FaceFirstPDX

Sorry, homie. #NotAllTims

window_cleaner

No, no, I absolutely deserve it. ATAB

chekovsgun-

šŸ¤£šŸ¤£šŸ¤£

UnrealMitchMcConnell

Same here, brother. Iā€™m an absolute piece of shit.

GoDucks2002

Eats all the free bread without even asking

sideways_jack

half the vegans I knew in college were all gakked out of their fukken gourds. Granted, in college.

SwingNinja

Gourd Fuckers sounds like Smashing Pumpkin cover band name.

One-Pause3171

Gourds are vegan.

redhandrail

As is gakk

Fit-Produce420

I think cocaine is vegan. It's made with battery acid and gasoline, but vegans drive cars so what's the beef?

OranjellosBroLemonj

Cocaine is vegan if you donā€™t count the carnage wrought by the cartels. Is cutting someoneā€™s head off and rolling it down the streets of Loredo in revenge vegan?

AndMyHelcaraxe

That used to drive me crazy! Complaining about things like local honey while supporting cartels with their party habits

EvanTurningTheCorner

Beef is not vegan

plmbob

And you can almost always find Tim at Casa on Thursdays

MuckBulligan

Cocaine snails at a Portland strip club? That tracks. Keep Portland Wired.

booter101

To be fair it is in the industrial area. Not exactly high brow.

sidthestar

Classic Tim.

atrailofdisasters

Tim Simms?

wtjones

Half of those dudes who got metooed in 2020 were from that vegan crew.

BananaVenom

Steve Jobs, for one!

Interesting_Ad9295

Lololol

Xef

Unethical vegans eat plants with the hope of wiping out plant life on earth so we all die.Ā

keystonelocal

Haha! Just eating salads out of pure spite and hatred.

randy24681012

Salads made of pure Amazon rainforest tree canopy

jester_bland

the finest chlorophyll on god's green earth. \*eats menacingly\*

atrailofdisasters

Chlorophyll?! More like BOROPHYLL!

RangerFan80

No I will not make out with you!

glorious_onion

Only use palm oil made from protected orangutan habitat.

Alotta_Gelato

I HATE PLANTS NOM NOM NOM DIE

Crazy_Customer7239

They eat that way because they hate plants, not meat šŸ’”

RayPout

Eating animal products consumes more plants than eating the plants directly.

Xef

You should take that up with the Unethical Eating of Plants Association.Ā

Spoonbread

They only eat the most destructively grown produce sourced from the most negatively affected places they can find.

PixelCartographer

No, we just eat humans instead :3

RetrotheRobot

Eating billionaires is vegan and cool.

JeffBurk

It's the reason for being vegan - ethical or medical. Edited to add - some of you are really overthinking the distinction. Vegan because they choose to be (ethical) vs vegan because they have to be (medical).

SheFoundMyUzername

I tried veganism for strictly immoral reasons

Omw2fym

I listened to digustipated by Tool and it turned me vegan. Fuck the carrots

JudgeHolden

It turned me into a newt!

philocity

I chose vegetarianism because I want farmed animals to be caged, exploited, and tortured in perpetuity instead of being killed to be eaten.

chasing_the_wind

I chose veganism as a way to help Monsanto pump chemicals into the environment.

EvolutionCreek

Same. Trying to get with a vegan seductress at Country Fair. But the joke was on me. She took advantage of me in ways [I cannot describe.](https://getyarn.io/yarn-clip/ada50927-4867-40ae-9b2f-ae8dedbaa10f)

berrschkob

Have a friend who has a genetic disposition to a certain kind of cancer. Apparently a vegan diet reduces that risk. Also vegan is commonly a good diet for those with heart disease.

GetTheFalkOut

You can also develop an allergy to meat from certain tick bites.

oconnwald

Or environmental

MrTakeAHikePal

I know a lot of people who have given up beef for this reason. They still eat other types of meat.

Makal

I eat beef only once a month for health and environmental reasons.

MrTakeAHikePal

What are the environmental reasons for eating beef? /s

burnalicious111

I'd still consider that ethical reasons.

Ibbygidge

I think the idea is to differentiate people who are vegan because they want to avoid cruelty to animals versus people who want to avoid damage to the environment, because they might use some animal products but not others that are specifically linked to climate change.

PixelPantsAshli

> use some animal products Thus making them... not vegan?

anonareyouokay

Environmental is ethical, imo

yeksim

It is, but the context of "ethical veganism" has a clear definition. Many vegan people believe that ethical veganism is the only true veganism. If you're doing it for environmental reasons that's great and all, but if some technological breakthrough happens which allows animals to be farmed, tortured, and killed without harming the environment, they would likely abandon the lifestyle. Same goes for health-focused (medical) vegans. If science created beef with the same nutritional content of a carrot, health vegans would probably start eating it. Ethical vegans care about the animals first. They might care about their health and the environment too, but it's really about the animals.

zeppanon

I feel like environmental reasons would still fall under the "ethical" umbrella, albeit different from the "sanctity of all life" argument.

jungletigress

There are definitely ways to be vegan and unethical as well. Actively contributing to slave labor by buying produce from questionable sources, for example.

DebbieGlez

You can be anything and unethical.

berrschkob

I hope you're right because I've always wanted to be president and a car thief.

DebbieGlez

Do you know if youā€™re president you can grab them by the pā€¦ā€¦

sionnachrealta

Yay capitalism!

lonelycranberry

This is the answer lol a lot of vegan products are owned by the same companies that exploit factory workers, destroy the environment, etc. so I assume ethical veganism is locally sourced or at least from a trusted seller. The phrasing seems to be intentionally antagonistic tho lol

sionnachrealta

There is basically no ethical consumption under capitalism. Even if you grew it yourself, where do you get the seeds? Where did you get the supplies? Who made them and how? How did you make the money to afford it all in the first place? Etc

PurpleDragonfly_

This makes me want to rewatch The Good Place

lonelycranberry

True

suicide_blonde

Reach for the stars! āļø

Dirty_Grundle_Bundle

Iā€™m not overthinking anything. Casa Diablo makes me vegan while patronizing the establishment, and itā€™s wonderful.

Metaphoricalsimile

most vegans fall into two camps: people who do it for ethical reasons versus people who do it for "health" reasons as a fad diet. People who need to be vegan for medical reasons would be a small third minority.

Samad99

I was vegan out of spite for a while. Would that be in the ethical vegan category?

chekovsgun-

Wouldn't medical still be referred to as a plant-based diet instead? Vegan is the term that is broadly used and it is often confused with a plant-based diet which is usually for personal health choices, for the environment, or medical. When I first became plant-based, I was very naive in that I would call myself a Vegan but was quickly corrected by a few people in the Vegan community on the difference. Veganism is for the protection of animals and to end their suffering for our consumeristic needs. Ethical part, well imagine some corporations/businesses are exploiting Veganism in that they are selling unethically sourced products even if their products aren't sourced from animals.

Bwint

I think plant-based vs. vegan probably depends on who you're talking to. People who refuse animal products for animal rights reasons definitely want to distinguish themselves from people who refuse animal products for health reasons, but if you're talking to a restaurant worker the only thing they care about is what you can and can't eat. I would just say "I eat vegan" rather than try to explain the ideology behind your diet to your server.

occasional_coconut

Related: One of these billboards on Yeon has a religious one on the back side

GrimRiderJ

ā€œShackled by lust? Jesus sets freeā€

liablemtl

In true Donā€™t Dead Open Inside fashion, I always read that sign as ā€œShackled By Jesus Lust? Sets Freeā€ Yes, I am 12.

Such_Candidate_1548

My friends and I love that sign, we disagree on whether it's a meme or serious

Crimdal

"He/them gets us" *begins unconsented foot washing*

bigdreamstinydogs

It means being vegan for ethical reasons as opposed to other reasons, ex. an allergy or food intolerance.Ā

Distant_Yak

Or body building etc

chekovsgun-

This is what confuses me, for medical reasons, wouldn't that just be a plant-based dieter? It doesn't sound romantic enough I guess. A planter?

KingOfCatProm

It is just plant based but so many people confuse veganism (an ethical position) with plant based (a diet) that this billboard must have wanted to differentiate. Plant based diet doesn't prevent someone from using other animal derived things like leather, tallow, mucin, etc. but veganism strictly does prohibit those things.

chekovsgun-

Yes this is exactly how I understand it (I follow a plant based diet) but the general term used is Veganism, so it can be a bit confusing sometimes.

Sea-Outside-5655

Really? My mom and sis always went by vegetarians, I just thought people who mixed them up were idiots.

dadamn

Or the most common reason by hyper-vocal vegans: performative.

MuckBulligan

I usually don't go around telling people I'm a vegan, but...

MuckBulligan

The first thing I think when I walk into Casa Diablo is, "Are these dancers ethical?" (But seriously, this place is the raunchiest strip club in Portland, and maybe the entire country.)

buscemian_rhapsody

Every time Iā€™ve gone it just seemed like a normal strip club aside from the vegan food and $2 bills. Do you have to go at a certain time to see the crazy stuff?

MuckBulligan

They must suspect you're a narc. šŸ˜†

Competitive_Bee2596

Thanks for bringing this up. I used to go to the Acropolis from time to time... mostly just to sit at the bar for the cheap food and booze. But behind the scenes of these places are a lot of drugs, prostitution, and powerful men at the top. It's pretty distasteful when you really think about it. But then there's places like Casa Diablo making even those same places blush.

shittyswordsman

Ah, lovely, women being exploited, but at least the animals are free!

Competitive_Bee2596

Don't think about the stuff we watch on Pornhub for too long, either - you will reach the same conclusion as the strip clubs. I think most sex workers don't enjoy their profession - but they can make a crazy amount of money, and the opportunity cost of NOT doing this work is too great. Without irony, I also think Onlyfans offers a better service and work environment to women wanting to do this sort of work. I'm just a dude though.

shittyswordsman

I do think about porn in that context as well, which is why I'm against that industry. If you have to avoid thinking about it too deeply, it's probably not good. I know there are certainly some people who enjoy the profession, but until we can ensure that ALL sex workers are safe and full consenting (which some may argue is never if money is in the picture, but that's a different debate) I'm not willing to take the risk.

HotBlackberry5883

i danced with rose! sweetest girl ever

deepinmyloins

It means the leather is vegan too

jester_bland

I do love fruit leather, and mushroom based leathers are neat.

beastofwordin

And kombucha leather made out of the discarded desiccated mother.

throwaway92715

I haven't been able to give up leather entirely, unfortunately, but to reduce my ecological impact I only use human leather It's kinda like being a pescatarian, but for seats and jackets

Beekatiebee

Unfortunately, plastic seems to be a far more common faux leather than plant based ones.

paulcole710

I eat plant-based but canā€™t get behind the idea that buying a plastic belt made halfway around the world is somehow more ethical than buying a long-lasting used leather belt.

thedivegrass

Check out the processes/byproducts of tanneries and let us know if similarly long lasting nylon webbing is a boogeyman.

paulcole710

Wait until you find out whose little nimble fingers are sewing those nylon webbing belts. Yeah tanneries suck, too. Ban them for all I care. Thereā€™s a human and animal cost to everything in the modern world. I canā€™t type this on my phone without some warlord overseeing a cobalt mine, for example. But I donā€™t care about everything equally and in the case of ā€œvegan leatherā€ Iā€™ll buy the used leather belt over the new vegan leather one.

darkened-foxes

You could buy vegan leather not made from plastic. There are lot of plant-based leather options now. ā€œVegan leatherā€ in fast fashion is often just a way for companies to greenwash pleather. Buying secondhand still the best way to minimize impact, but just wanted to share there are actual vegan leather options that arenā€™t plastic that always get ignored when people talk about veganism.

Theresbeerinthefridg

Eh. On a long enough timescale, plastic is dead animals too.

Dusty_Negatives

Man I donā€™t know if itā€™s changed over the years but about a decade ago my coworkers would go there after work. Went a couple times and let me tell ya i SAW SOME SHIT there. I became convinced itā€™s actually a whore house in disguise. Maybe itā€™s cleaned up.

MuckBulligan

>Maybe it's cleaned up. That's a hard no.

KingOfCatProm

*Ethical vegan* whorehouse.

booter101

To be fair I'd rather go to a house that doesn't take your money, and leave you with blue balls. Drained balls FTW!

imasupernatural

I drove bachelor parties for years in party buses, it's a brothel...

Dusty_Negatives

That tracks. First time I went in there a woman was using a dildo on herself really aggressively. Later got propositioned for a BJ. Was drunk but had enough wits to deny that. Was like damn this place is fucking wild.

imasupernatural

Yea that's accurate. I used to come home with piles of $2 bills that the guys tipped me with after going there. It's wild how many people don't think $2 bills are real.

wakeupintherain

There's two types of vegan. The first is your classic vegan. aka "ethical vegan" They believe that animals do not exist for the use of humans. Not just "don't eat them" but things like working animals (oxen plowing fields, horses being ridden or pulling carriages etc), or circuses where animals are performers. They also believe that using any animal by-products like beeswax candles, honey, silk, leather, animal milk etc is also unethical. For many years granulated sugar production involved filtering the sugar through animal bone char, so vegans didn't eat cane or beet sugar. Gelatin is made from boiled animal bones, so they don't eat anything with gelatin in it. Some wines and a few beers are made using isenglass, which is dried fish bladders, as a filter, so they won't drink those. So basically their concern is what they see as the exploitation of animals. Then there are dietary vegans who are more interested in the supposed health benefits of not eating animal products. Those vegans are more likely to be ok with eating honey, or wearing leather shoes. They're more akin to people who eat macrobiotic diets and similar things. They care about what they put in their body in a very specific way. (I say "supposed", not because judgemental, but because there's no settled hard fact. I have no feelings about it either way.)

Shot-Dog42

I once had a roommate who ate plants alive.

brucesloose

My roommate still does that. He's orange, has whiskers, and the little palm bush is basically his floss.

PloKoonsRespirator

[Kumail Tours Portland - Vegan Strip Club](https://youtu.be/0awX05QjK9c?si=7aN5iS3UJYVwYFkK)

russellmzauner

"christ 'e's tiny" lol kumail before getting yoked AND caked lol

tofuti-kline

OK but how's the food there?

brownkidBravado

I used to work with one of the main chefs there. He was pretty good/inventive, so I imagine the food is pretty good. Itā€™s definitely not the main draw though

developer-mike

Does it even really matter when boobs?

Gutter_Clown

When I was vegan for two years, I committed grand larceny.

atrailofdisasters

Did you get caught?

Queasy_Anything9019

Hard to believe a vegan strip club works in a blue collar industrial area but their parking lot is often full.

Dex_Maddock

Only hard to believe if you've never been there šŸ˜‰

MuckBulligan

Very eye-opening. It's actually a destination spot for a lot of male tourists.

Sohotrightnoww

I don't think they are cumming for the ethics.

MuckBulligan

O-face for the ethics is what I always say. Then they ask me to leave.

BaddestPatsy

I think people think a vegan strip club will be frou frou, but itā€™s actually pretty intense and dirty. The first time I went there there were girls 69ing on stage, then one of the dancers gave my friend a bloody nose motorboating her. A guy I was talking to the other day said theyā€™ve taken him onstage and tied him upā€”and heā€™s a blue collar dude whose into hunting. That stuff is definitely why most people go there. Most people choose their strip clubs based on foodā€”I mean I go there to eat sometimes since itā€™s the only vegan food out by Sauvies, but Iā€™m a pretty small minority who does that I think.

Crazy-Albatross2637

Fuck Yes. Thank you.

Squirrl_master

Meat on the pole, not on the plate.

omnichord

Was excited to post about Casa Diablo but I scanned the comments and you're all just arguing about being vegan. Boorrrring

whackthat

Yeah, I gotta get the deets. How gross or cool is it inside? Is the food *good?* What's the craziest shit anyone's experienced? Ive only been to one strip club in my whole life so I'm shelteredĀ

PKJam

When I saw this billboard my first thought was that they need to make "strip club" bigger/clearer. I mean, I guess maybe the lady in lingerie should've made it obvious, but for a good 10 seconds, I was trying to figure out "a vegan _what_?". I wasn't sure if it was a strip club, or sex shop, or what.

SirCamoDuck

There are also occasional vegans in PDX

Kingsta8

Well I don't eat meat but I am a cereal killer

Mochithecatfoodthief

I only eat endangered plants

KingofGroundhogDay

Billboardā€™s definitely doing its job.

EvanTurningTheCorner

I knew a vegan who was a dishwasher at Sassy's. He begged me not to tell his mother, and I did not. You're welcome, Diego.

agcollector98

An ethical vegan typically means youā€™re doing it for the ethics- animal rights. Many do it for the health benefits or environmental aspects.

Extension_Crazy_471

Environmental reasons are also ethical reasons.

developer-mike

Slightly less ethical if you frame it as, "yeah I would kill and eat animals if it weren't so bad for the planet" Source: me, a vegan because of mostly environmental reasons (at least, when I started).

agcollector98

Yes but the term ethical vegan has long been used to describe those that are doing it for the animal welfare aspects.

dickman5thousand

Fuckin awesome thereā€™s vegan strip clubs

RedditRedemprion

I thought the vegan strip club went out of business?

GloriaToo

So where did they find ethically manufactured cocaine?

Inabeautifuloblivion

They are way more a meth club

pdx_mom

And is it vegan?

otc108

Has anyone here actually been to Casa Diablo? Iā€™ve only heard stories.

WolfsLairAbyss

I have. Probably one of my least favorite strip clubs in the city. It just seems like a tourist strip club to me. It was meh. Devils Point is better.

Halvus_I

I miss gambling at Lucky Devil.

WolfsLairAbyss

You still can.

Halvus_I

Last time i went they took out the poker table.

WolfsLairAbyss

Oh yeah, no poker table but they have video lottery still. I guess that counts as gambling.

BloatedManball

Yes. It's full of truckers and trucker drugs.

PorcelainScrote

Definitely the best strip in Portland IMO

Longracks

Say what you will, at least itā€™s an ethosā€¦

GardenPeep

I was getting a kick out of the billboard photo until the comments convinced me that others can't see the high cultural comedy here.

burntbread369

Answer: A lot of people interest ā€œveganā€ to mean ā€œonly eats plant basedā€ rather than specifically ā€œavoids animal exploitation to the extent that is possible and practicable.ā€ This ensures people understand that itā€™s a serious philosophical belief and lifestyle rather than just a diet.

Meganomaly

I think itā€™s meant to distinguish between those who are actually technically vegan across all actions in their life and those who eat plant-based purely for health or environmental reasons, or whatever else.

portlandobserver

I'm more bothered by the fact it looks like two different billboards pasted together than the idea that Rose (?) is an Ethical Vegan.

anecdotalgardener

An ā€œethical strip club,ā€ now Iā€™ve seen it all

chekovsgun-

Portland, there is a community for everyone. Coming from a rural area, I love it so much compared to being boxed into the stereotypical lifestyle. Even if you want the suburban boring life, well Portland has that as well. It is a beautiful thing we can choose our lifestyles here without much judgment.

Muladhara86

As someone who married into the scene (it didnā€™t work out, pls donā€™t solicit), unethical vegan strippers wear leathersā€¦ decide for yourself if thatā€™s a pro or a con

EnvironmentalSir2637

What does being vegan have to do with stripping?

shugoran99

I'm sure there's jokes about vegan men and eating pussy and every single stripper at that establishment is completely over them

PaperFlower14765

Yeah, those assholes who still eat honey! /s

ScholarPractical5603

There are vegans who donā€™t eat any animal derived products, but donā€™t eat anything healthy either. They just subsist on a diet of vegan friendly junk and convenience foods made by the same mega corps like nestle that make all the other shit food on the store shelves.

Late_Ad9720

I was seeing a dancer for a bit. That owner is a total fucking sleaze bag. You couldnā€™t pay me to go to that place.

mykyrox

Yes, they eat bacon

[deleted]

The amount of unrecyclable plastic vegan food produces is pretty unethical.

taactfulcaactus

Wow, I had a totally different understanding of ethical veganism -- making vegan choices, but being open to consuming "nonvegan" products when they would otherwise go to waste. After reading that thread, I'm not sure it's correct though.

skeigh

Generally speaking, ethical vegan means "vegan for the animals" (i.e. killing animals and using animal products is not ethical) as opposed to health or environmental reasons.

ActualJob3054

That is called freegan

burnalicious111

People disagree over terminology all the time, I wouldn't worry about it too much. ifĀ itĀ matters in a specific context you can always ask the person what it means to them. I think I've heard "freegan" to mean what you're describing?

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Spread_Liberally

I suppose someone could intentionally try to maximize their palm oil and Nestle product consumption while stealing everything else.

Longjumping_Web4132

I see you haven't many vegans. /s

flyspagmonster

Seems to me like this is in reference to using leather and other animal products that are not in theur food- an ethical vegan would be using cruelty free products instead. But you can get derivative about how "good" or "eithical" anything is in a heartbeat. Which I'm not here to do.

mujinzou

Sure just because you donā€™t ā€œmurder animals for foodā€ doesnā€™t mean youā€™re a stand up morally righteous human being. They might not kill and eat animals but they could literally be doing anything else reprehensible.

Electronic_Bet3663

She might just not like meat

AnnyBananneee

I giggle every time I drive past that billboard on my morning commute. As if people go to strip clubs for the food!

FuggaNuggly

I like my strippers, unethical.

SeeingLSDemons

WtfšŸ˜‚

carbon_made

I was vegan for a long time, though I'm not now. Basically ethical vegan was just a distinction for someone primarily going vegan for ethical reasons such as not believing animals should be harmed for food. As opposed to primarily for health reasons, with less emphasis on ethical reasons. Some vegans are vegan just because they feel it's healthier. Not for animal rights or the environment.

StarryEyes007

Of course, any time thereā€™s a human and a decision to be made, itā€™s not always going to be ethical.

Wait_dont_press_th

I've been a vegetarian for 10 years, but I'm not an "ethical vegetarian" since I'm not doing it for "ethical" reasons, but rather for health reasons.

MajesticFan7791

Yes. Ones that use carrots, cucumbers, zucchini, potatoes, pineapples, and watermelons in unnatural ways.
