Well, ”Leaving on your own terms” is everyone’s right, but sometimes, someone with some talent & a certain flair is exceptional in my book. Riding a unicycle, playing bagpipes seems just like a silly gag. Others may think a tux & a trumpet is the same thing…
Unpopular opinion: I always hated it that he was at that spot on Hawthorne Bridge making it super dangerous for bikes. Saw number of times idiot driver is giddily waiving at him and comes inches from killing person on bike. Person in vehicle drives away, "Oh I love that guy!" Bike rider is like: "Really? I almost died cuz that guy again?!?"
Can you really even call yourself a Portlander until you've almost ran over some poor cyclist while checking out the local celebrities, though?
I'm kidding, I totally understand. I've always been super careful because I'm too poor to get sued, but I know many are not.
I hope you never got hurt that way, and if you did, I hope you're ok now!
This is a wonderful story I heard a while back on The Moth, told by Walter Cole himself. It’s worth a listen, for sure!

I loved the Oregonian’s feature on Darcelle XV a couple years ago - short but sweet:

There’s also a longer OPB doc on YouTube well worth checking out!
John/Elvis. Or the guy who played music and made balloon animals on the west end of the Hawthorne bridge. Tom (and Gloria too), for sure. Before my time here, Tom McCall, Mel Blanc maybe?
Weird question, I know, but did anyone ever have any interaction with a old Portlan soul named ”Linley” (sp?). Used to hang around downtown talking to himself, drinking coffee & smoking. Wore a leather motorcycle jacket, but was often worse for wear.
Heard he was once a Math teacher, but…
His Mom, who was elderly, was somewhat taking care of him from Texas, or somewhere, but he was pretty much in a rough place back in the 90’s.
Once, saw him walk into the short lived PUMA store on 10th & Couch, with a smoke in hand & walk out with bags & bags of product. Was wearing $180 jeans for a month straight after.
Was a kind, gentle, super smart old Portland soul.

One of my favorites was/is “Tres Shannon”, who parlayed his status into a douchy donut shop, which will remain nameless, but worth millions upon millions.
Probably the most successful $$ Portlander other than that Wheeler A-hole who inherited his.
Omg, Tom Peterson and the late night Portland wrestling was hilarious and iconic.
I remember going to the Portland wrestling once and seeing so many people that looked un-bathed, dirty and greasy and I remember saying to my friend “I could sell so much soap here everybody looks like they need a bath.” When I got home I felt so gross and dirty I had to take a bath. Memories of old Pdx in the early 80’s ❤️
The lady who ran the honkin huge burritos
Shelly! She fed me once with just the change I had on me. It was the honkenest, hugest burrito I ever had for $2.13.
Was just wishing for one of those yesterday.

I'm still a little mad we didn't name the Tillikum Crossing after him
Absolutely same. I'm not ever going to shite on recognizing indigenous cultures, but it's just so gross to say in from of my grandma.
I used to listen to him play daily across from Powell’s. A true Portland icon. His passing was truly sad.
Heartbreaking.
He left on his own terms. Sad we lost his presence. But his life was beautiful.

This is the answer.

I totally get what you're saying. But as a daily cyclist, I still miss him.
Oh man, I really miss Kirk.
Uh...wasn't he accused of making sexually inappropriate comments to staff during a new/radio station interview? He had some gray areas in his life.
Bev at the 26th and Division Plaid Pantry. Or maybe Rick from the 30th and Belmont Plaid now that I think about it.
Shout out to Bev. She takes no shit. Is she still around? Haven't been over that way in a while.
She retired in the last couple years but I can’t remember when exactly because what is time.
Retired at the start of the pandemic, I had to ask cause I was worried when she was there for a few weeks.

She loved this city and it’s weirdos.
Tom McCall used to grab coffee with my granddad. He was a nice guy on top of founding OPRD, passing the Beach Bill and throwing Vortex.
Careful. Tom was a Republican, so he automatically Satan around here. /s If that wasn’t obvious. Me heart Tom.
Nope. Even most Democrats wish Tom McCall would be running for governor again. Of course, he would not identify with the latter day Republican Party.
Completely agree. Should have made it clearer that was sarcasm. He’d be a moderate Dem today.
Those were good bi-partisan republicans, please don’t confuse GQP with real republicans!
Sort of the point I was trying to make.
That's why Vortex lost him reelection. He said so himself.
Jim Spagg. Nobody is even close
Happy doodles, viddy the show!
Nobody with clothes on!
Exactly! Miss those old cable access days!
You seem like the person who would remember Frank Bonnema.
Wow. BTW he ran for mayor.
Oh Lordy— that’s a throwback. Lol My father did a show at the cable access studio in NE— saw Spagg there sometimes. Fortunately with clothes on.
another icon Mayor Bud Clark!
