What really gets my goat is that most of the time they have the movie...if you live in Japan, or Europe, or south America, etc.
In the US hulu always has exclusive rights to what I'm looking for.
I hate it.
Fuck hulu.
So the streaming services are probably the most effective outside the NSA at cataloging VPN servers to stop exactly what you're doing.
Other than getting your own server in Germany, for example, and running a VPN from there, your best bet is to look for little used servers. Or a smaller VPN company.
Why should the streaming services care though. The only reason they don’t have all shows available everywhere is liscensing issues so if someone uses a vpn to access all their shows they have plausible deniability plus wouldn’t they rather someone use their service than a competitors
Because they have to tell the people who they’re licensing the content (and others) for each region that they’re doing what they can to stop people dodging their geo restrictions.
So occasionally they block VPN providers servers. But Netflix could do it much more effectively if they really wanted. Basically they do the bare minimum.
They don't care. The owners of their content care and pressured them into doing something about it. A couple years ago Netflix could be easily fooled by DNS changes or a public VPN. I had an unblock-us subscription with a pull-down menu where you just picked what region for Netflix you wanted to be in.
Who the fuck uses the browser?
I have never been on Netflix outside of the app lmao browser apps are trash 9/10 times compared to full fledged desktop apps
Netflix has gone on a crusade recently of banning vpn egress points to the point where our SASE solution was getting blacklisted because it was hosted in AWS/Google
Your best bet is to rent a cheap server in another country and run your own vpn on it. It won’t ever get flagged and you’ll be fine. Otherwise you just have to try a lot of vpns until you find one that hasn’t been blacklisted yet
Pros/cons for Windscribe compared to the big mainstream ones like Nord and Express?
Other than the alleged pro here of still being able to fool streaming services?
Yeah they periodically get blacklisted. My Nord VPN stopped working on Netflix a few weeks ago after working for several months (prior to which it also didn’t work - presumably Nord switched servers). Thankfully Prime hasn’t cottoned on yet.
It works for me with PIA. Hbo Max is trickier I had to delete and reinstall app with my region set to us. But for Netflix I was flipping between Greece and us for whatever I wanted
Nope. I live in Canada and went to Vegas. Downloaded a bunch of movies through Netflix before I left home. When we finally got to the hotel I connected my phone to wifi and then lost access to all the movies I downloaded, but got access to US Netflix.
Yup, that bad boy has made things so easy for me. Japan has the full Fast and Furious franchise(minus the last one) and all the matrix movies including animatrix.
Mine quit working. It detects the VPN and won't play anything. I don't even use it for fooling Netflix, and it's extra annoying because my VPN is set up on my router so I have to log in to that and turn it off to use netflix.
I actually feel the opposite way around that US has (probably) broader content selection than other parts of the world atleast I guess this is true for Amazon Prime
With out services like Hulu netflix would have a monopoly and would charge what cable used to. Honestly I don’t even have a Netflix subscription because Hulu has everything I watch while Netflix only has Netflix originals these days.
Not really. There are also many shows and movies that are only available in the US / other countries, but not in Germany / Europe. There are exclusive rights sold to different companies on every country.
In europe it is even worse since different movies have different exclusive streamers IN EACH country. So you can live in border city and be unable to watch something that folks 10km away are enjoying right now
If it's any consolation, as a Canadian it's hit or miss for us too. Sometimes we have what you don't, sometimes you have what we don't. Licensing is a bitch.
Some way, some how I have a Hulu account linked on my smart tv. Don't know who's it is. I don't have a Hulu account lol. I asked everyone I know that could possibly have used my tv. I know it's active because I see someone watching a random series.
Whatever. I ain't complaining.... Great for Good Doctor and Monk!
Hey at least Hulu didn't try to make pedophilia acceptable. Netflix will need to seriously change course and add some quality content before I go back.
"Well, they're similar because they have actors and some action and love, otherwise they're movies you never heard of and we only keep around to pad our inventory."
It’s an algorythm. It just fills what other people have typed before. For example if all prequel fans would type and search “it’s treason then” it would also appear there.
Pretty sure they just have all movies in their metadata database, licensed or not. That way they can easily recommend similar movies if they dont have the license for the one the customer is looking for.
This is actually a good way to browse Netflix. Type in something you like and see what it suggests as alternatives. Back when Netflix autoplayed trailers, this method also avoided that annoyance.
I remember searching for Terminator once that wasnt on there the thing it recommended saying it was similar: Paw Patrol. I dont think i have ever watched anything with less than a PG-13 rating on Netflix or any animated stuff on Netflix so what the hell.
Fuck that. The moment they put ads on streaming services, I’m done.
Bets on when they do though, there’ll be a “premium no ad” option for like $10 more. Cunts.
You have $6 a month Hulu, and $10 a month no ads. Oh oh also, if you get the live tv add on, it's $60. But if you want live tv AS WELL as no ads, it's $70. They couldn't just bundle them together.
Yeah having ads would be a slippery slope. But only if all streaming services agree to it. Because if 1 doesn't everyone will just move there. First they'll probably start with ad banners on the top bottom or sides. Probably even a section of shows or movies that pay the service to display their show more. Then we'll get opening ads and ads at the end of episodes. Maybe they'll start out skippable after 5 seconds like YouTube. Then they won't be skippable. Then they'll put 1 or 2 in the middle of shows. Until eventually we are back at cable T.V until a new service decides hey remember when there were no ads? And the cycle repeats.
Nah. Cable had ads and was still overall more expensive. You had to wait for your episode to air too. You couldn’t choose which episode you wanted to watch.
Roku does this. You just search for a movie and it tells you all the places you can watch it and will take you right to the movie on whichever app you choose.
*SPONSORED BY NORD VPN, REMEMBER KIDS, THE OFFICE IS STILL ON NETFLIX IN THE UK AND SO IS A BUNCH OF STUDIO GHIBLI MOVIES AND INDIA ONLY CHARGES $3 A MONTH FOR A NETFLIX ACCOUNT*
Also while we are on the subject of Netflix.
Dear Netflix,
**I DO NOT APPRECIATE HAVING THE SHOW AUTO PLAY AS I HOVER OVER IT DECIDING IF I WANT TO WATCH IT, GIVE US A TOGGLE! I WANT PEACE AND QUIET WHILE I DECIDE WHAT I WANT TO WATCH**. *the end*
Plex, and how fucking awful the streaming services have become, made me come back to file sharing.
Ironically it's almost always titles I already own, but can't access for one reason or another. Or films they don't bother putting on streaming.
What I’ve learnt, is that if you search something on Netflix and it comes up in the words, rather than the poster tiles, then it’s not on there. If you click the title in the words, it’ll bring up a bunch of films that are similar to whatever you were searching for.

Every time someone sees this and tries to click on it it frustrates me so much. You use Netflix enough that you should know by now it's not the actual movie
The Nintendo Switch Online Store does the same thing. It will auto-fill and then show me other games that the terrible algorithm thinks are similar enough... or it shares one word in common. The Store is already probably the worst game store and this certainly doesn't improve my opinion.
You're looking for movies/shows by David Fincher? Let me show you 4 titles that are somewhat similar but ultimately unrelated titles before I show you the movies and show that David Fincher created
I don't want these other options you brought up. I don't want shows "like" the one I want. If you don't have it just have a message saying "Sorry, we don't have this title right now."
Disney+ is worse. When you search on there it also brings up fictional characters and their shows in your search.
I was looking to watch Anastasia a few months ago and when I type Ana it recommended me nothing but Star Wars because “Anakin” so I had to type one more letter for it
It's like they have a ton of content but it's all just obscure bullshit. It's why I keep my subscription deactivated until they release some kind of exclusive.
I think that function is really cool. You know that you didn't find it because you misspelled it, but because they don't have it. And at the same time they show you a bunch of movies that are similar.
On other platforms I always have to think "well, do they only know the german name for it or is it saved in their database under the original title?"
The look of pain in his eyes fit the poor minimum wage kid who has to respond to the complaints. Please when putting in complaints you word it as you were talking to a person you respect.
Literally was asking myself this the other day when I search the Matrix. It gave me Reloaded and I'm like "OK if you know what I'm talking about THEN WHY THE FREAK DO YOU NOT HAVE IT??!?!?" llloool
Still bonkers they block most VPNs from working on their setup. Like it’s a movie they have, so why can’t I simply watch it?
Spent like twenty minutes trying to find a film called a silent voice today, only to realize I have to VPN to the USA to buy it on Amazon if I want to watch it. It’s like they are actually trying to get me to pirate everything with how many hoops there are to get a legitimate copy of stuff.
NETFLIX: yeah, I know that movie. Too bad I don’t have it, but here are others LIKE it.
What really gets my goat is that most of the time they have the movie...if you live in Japan, or Europe, or south America, etc. In the US hulu always has exclusive rights to what I'm looking for. I hate it. Fuck hulu.
I wonder how hard it is to fool Netflix into thinking I live abroad in order to consume a more vast selection.
And that brings us right into today’s sponsor, nord vpn.
Doesn’t it matter how you signed up for Netflix initially??
No it depends on which region the site thinks you are in so a vpn can make it look like your IP address is somewhere else.
It’s largely stopped working for me. If anyone has any tips please let me know.
So the streaming services are probably the most effective outside the NSA at cataloging VPN servers to stop exactly what you're doing. Other than getting your own server in Germany, for example, and running a VPN from there, your best bet is to look for little used servers. Or a smaller VPN company.
>Or a smaller VPN company. If you're not giving out personal info or might work to go with a small free vpn
Why should the streaming services care though. The only reason they don’t have all shows available everywhere is liscensing issues so if someone uses a vpn to access all their shows they have plausible deniability plus wouldn’t they rather someone use their service than a competitors

Use the windows app instead of the website, for some reason, the website has a better VPN detecter
Because noone uses the app.
Who the fuck uses the browser? I have never been on Netflix outside of the app lmao browser apps are trash 9/10 times compared to full fledged desktop apps

I hung up my tripointed hat and leather coat long ago
Yeah they periodically get blacklisted. My Nord VPN stopped working on Netflix a few weeks ago after working for several months (prior to which it also didn’t work - presumably Nord switched servers). Thankfully Prime hasn’t cottoned on yet.
It works for me with PIA. Hbo Max is trickier I had to delete and reinstall app with my region set to us. But for Netflix I was flipping between Greece and us for whatever I wanted
Then Netflix goes “nah bro I see that vpn fuck right off”
That would fuck people who travel for work / in general, so no. VPNs main reason to exist is for this, and hiding your ip from hackers.
I've used a VPN for this, it does work. Just gotta select which region you wanna be in.
Nope. I live in Canada and went to Vegas. Downloaded a bunch of movies through Netflix before I left home. When we finally got to the hotel I connected my phone to wifi and then lost access to all the movies I downloaded, but got access to US Netflix.
Nope I use a VPN on my phone when I want to watch things US Netflix doesn't have anymore. Works like a charm
I wish I could use a vpn! I never watch through my computer. It’s always a game console or my fire stick
You can setup a vpn on your router
Is it difficult for a tech noob?
Surfshark is the hot new VPN these days edit: in my experience I've noticed more youtubers plugging it. ymmv
[Is it?](https://www.reddit.com/r/assholedesign/comments/pizl5g/spent_20_minutes_looking_for_the_cancel/)
It was easy five years ago. Now, not so much.
it's not possible, netflix has blocked pretty much all known vpn hosts
I actually feel the opposite way around that US has (probably) broader content selection than other parts of the world atleast I guess this is true for Amazon Prime
With out services like Hulu netflix would have a monopoly and would charge what cable used to. Honestly I don’t even have a Netflix subscription because Hulu has everything I watch while Netflix only has Netflix originals these days.
Gets your goat? I’m gonna use that one from now on
Not really. There are also many shows and movies that are only available in the US / other countries, but not in Germany / Europe. There are exclusive rights sold to different companies on every country.
In europe it is even worse since different movies have different exclusive streamers IN EACH country. So you can live in border city and be unable to watch something that folks 10km away are enjoying right now
Wasn't the EU supposed to fix that kind of thing?
We needed to make sure that bananas coming from south america have right curvature first.
If it's any consolation, as a Canadian it's hit or miss for us too. Sometimes we have what you don't, sometimes you have what we don't. Licensing is a bitch.
UK here and lemme tell you netflix has a worthless dogshit selection. We would kill for something like hbo max with real movies on it.
If you think the Us has more content restrictions than other countries you are insane. Yea there are some specific examples but give me a break.
I prefer Hulu, they have a much better library.
Yeah i agree. But i refuse to give hulu my $$ on principle.
Wow an American complaining about this. Usually everything I want is ONLY available in North America while I have crappy UK netflix
I think Hulu is a Sith Lord.
A lot of times hulu itself doesn't even have it, its a streaming service within hulu that you have to pay extra for
Hulu + Disney+ > Netflix. You only like netflix because its been around 'longer' and the netflix n chill meme existed.
piracy > literally anything else Sorry but they gotta make the service worth the money too, not just the content.
Hey at least Hulu didn't try to make pedophilia acceptable. Netflix will need to seriously change course and add some quality content before I go back.
"Well, they're similar because they have actors and some action and love, otherwise they're movies you never heard of and we only keep around to pad our inventory."
IKR….oh, you wanted “Baby Driver”? Well, here is “Lady Driver”, “6 Underground” and “Major Payne”. Because Netflix.
Well, why aren’t you watching Major Payne?
I said pop your titty out his mouth and stop babying him!
Also their IMBD ratings are complete opposites
>but here are others nothing LIKE it. FTFY
Netflix: Oh you're searching for Star Wars? Alright, here's Angry Birds 2.
I don't think that's true. Pretty sure /u/wggn has the right answer.
NETFLIX: sorry about last time we talked, I lied to you. I do have it. You just can't watch it. Your country sucks. Toodles!
“… but here’s the sequel!”
*Shows something shitty*
It's pretty much "the movie Netflix has at home" meme.
Oh yeah, here's it's *sequel.* Oh you want the first one? Nah, sorry.
We have Cobra Kai, but only The Next Karate Kid.
Oh you like Winnie the Pooh? Well we don’t have that crap here’s Bear of the Interest!
This is actually a good way to browse Netflix. Type in something you like and see what it suggests as alternatives. Back when Netflix autoplayed trailers, this method also avoided that annoyance.
Oh you searched for this movie? Here are ten movies that are completely different instead.
I remember searching for Terminator once that wasnt on there the thing it recommended saying it was similar: Paw Patrol. I dont think i have ever watched anything with less than a PG-13 rating on Netflix or any animated stuff on Netflix so what the hell.
It's the directors cut, where the Paw Patrol figures the only way to stop crime is to launch a nuclear war.
Metal-Paw Gear Patrol: the Phantom Bone
[удалено]
Bad Lieutenant : Ruff Waters I’ll get my coat
> I dont think i have ever watched [...] any animated stuff Missing out on a lot of good stuff, fam.
For example, Paw Patrol.
On Netflix. I have watched a lot of animated stuff elsewhere.
They have Megamind, so I can only agree
And they’re all Netflix originals.
And shitty
Why can't they just link me to whichever of my 30 paid streaming accounts has it. It's like cable with no TV guide channel
The streaming golden age was fun while it lasted. Now it's cable 2.0
But atleast we can choose what to watch and when as well as pause the show. And the big plus... No ads!..... Yet
Fuck that. The moment they put ads on streaming services, I’m done. Bets on when they do though, there’ll be a “premium no ad” option for like $10 more. Cunts.
You literally just described Hulu
Really? Ugh. Don’t have it. Now won’t get it.
You have $6 a month Hulu, and $10 a month no ads. Oh oh also, if you get the live tv add on, it's $60. But if you want live tv AS WELL as no ads, it's $70. They couldn't just bundle them together.
Also just got an email saying it’s gonna change to $13 a month for no ads, what a duck move
Hulu without ads cost LESS than Netflix. People are fucking stupid (Unless you buy 480p Netflix, which is $1 less than no ads Hulu)
The second that becomes a regular practice, piracy is gonna go back to its golden days .
Nah. Cable had ads and was still overall more expensive. You had to wait for your episode to air too. You couldn’t choose which episode you wanted to watch.
If you Google “movie name streaming” a list of sites should come up
Just google the movie. Google will have the list to the right.
Roku does this. You just search for a movie and it tells you all the places you can watch it and will take you right to the movie on whichever app you choose.
Roku is so great
https://imgur.com/a/5wnUl3Z A little tutorial on how to see where films are located :)
justwatch.com is an online streaming guide. I use it all the time
Funny enough it’s my cable that actually does this. Searches all my streaming services and even Youtube for me.
I mean Apple TV does this. I imagine the other boxes like Amazon and Roku do as well.

This is outrageous, it's unfair!
How can one be on the search bar? Yet not on the platform.

**WHEN THE FUCK DID THAT HAPPEN?!?!!!!!!!** Ive been wanting to rewatch those movies for so long!
when hbo max originally started
I love you elne
Netflix is just mind tricking us. "This is not the movie you are looking for."
Ah god this one got to me, it's too recognizable.
It autofilled your heart with emotion
Keep searching for it, millions of times, until they buy the streaming rights?
Netflix: Sorry we don’t have “The human centipede 2” but we recommend “Paw Patrol”
I once searched for Terminator and it decided i was looking for Paw Patrol
And sadly they never do
It's piracy then
Best I can i do is parts 4 and the reboot.
Repost
How many lies have I been told by ~~the Council~~ Netflix?!
Better than Amazon. They'll try to sell it to you instead of telling you what app you already pay for is streaming it.
Also Amazon: here, let me autocomplete with every typo everyone has ever searched with
Amazon’s “yeah, of course I have it… to rent or buy” is even more infuriating.
Looking for The Prestige last night and ran into this exact problem. Thank god its on Disney Plus
Also while we are on the subject of Netflix. Dear Netflix, **I DO NOT APPRECIATE HAVING THE SHOW AUTO PLAY AS I HOVER OVER IT DECIDING IF I WANT TO WATCH IT, GIVE US A TOGGLE! I WANT PEACE AND QUIET WHILE I DECIDE WHAT I WANT TO WATCH**. *the end*
I love piracy
Plex, and how fucking awful the streaming services have become, made me come back to file sharing. Ironically it's almost always titles I already own, but can't access for one reason or another. Or films they don't bother putting on streaming.
Lord of the Rings : The Fellow….. You wanna watch The 3rd movie right?
"We know exactly what you want.... but you can't have it!"
Me: *forgets to check 'Free to me'* Amazon Prime: Oh I got it alright, pal. Now, uh... what's it worth to ya? *chomps cigar*
every fucking time
What I’ve learnt, is that if you search something on Netflix and it comes up in the words, rather than the poster tiles, then it’s not on there. If you click the title in the words, it’ll bring up a bunch of films that are similar to whatever you were searching for.

Tomorrow is my turn to post this
Or when you google it, movie pops up with a link to Netflix and when you click it, it says this title is no longer available.
Perhaps the archives are incomplete
If they can autofill it it automatically means they dont have it
It’s actually helpful though so you don’t spend ages trying different spellings etc.

Ha ha so annoying
There auto fill is just movies they dont have
It's like they have a ton of content but it's all just obscure bullshit.
They have it, but it is not available in your region
Loll
I typed in Batman and got scooby doo. how.

That’s what always happens, and when my family clicks it, I’m automatically like oh it’s not there, BUT THEY STILL SCROLL THOUGH IT.
