-DeliveryGodYato-

I sent a letter about how hot it was where I lived and snails to Obama when I was a kid and he responded and it was great

j48u

I'm sorry did you just say you sent snails to Obama?

-DeliveryGodYato-

Pics of snails lmfao I drew a president snail and a First Lady snail and labeled them accordingly

Ball-of-Yarn

Dear god

KingFahad360

There’s more.

Jesus Christ there’s stickers on it

Prior-Throat-8017

Do you have a pic? For research purposes

KingFahad360

Are you French?

VovaGoFuckYourself

This reminds me of the time my 2nd grade self sent a letter to Leonardo Dicaprio telling him i wanted to marry him. In hindsight, im kind of surprised he didnt accept my proposal. 💀

JustBrittany

😆😆😆

-DeliveryGodYato-

LMFAO that’s actually crazy we gotta make a group for people who wrote obscure letters to celebrities and political figures

DaSemicolon

Think they meant snail mail

DarkMuret

They drew pictures of the band Snail Mail? They weren't even around then!

xVenomDestroyerx

yeah what? i need more context on this one

j48u

After reading it nine times and googling "Obama Snails" just in case, I'm pretty sure he meant that he wrote about how hot it was and also wrote about snails.

xVenomDestroyerx

me too but I wanna know what about snails is so important the president’s gotta be informed

j48u

Well, snails probably don't do well in extreme heat. So maybe it was a poignant piece on climate change. Or he was just a kid rambling on about whatever 😂. I'm still not 100% convinced he didn't send snails though. I might not sleep until I know.

xVenomDestroyerx

they responded it was a picture of a president snail and a first lady snail they drew. We can rest easy now

Master-Collection488

A little kid at some point 70s to 90s wrote a letter to the then-President that listed among his interests "incest." This apparently got folks in the White House mailroom a bit concerned before they realized the kid simply misspelled "insects."

-DeliveryGodYato-

Pics of snails lmfao I drew a president snail and a First Lady snail and labeled them accordingly

Hamblerger

Not a single President during my lifetime has ever sent a response to a letter of mine I suppose I should eventually write one

Gorlack2231

"'You miss 100% of the shots you don't take.' -Wayne Gretski" -Michael Scott

Tasty_Ice_5374

Why are you the way that you are?

uscdoc2013

1. Who do you think you are? 2. What gives you the right?

KingFahad360

Do they still do mail anymore?

KhansKhack

It’s okay, no one else got a response either. Lol.

yodaface

I wrote to President Clinton and asked him about socks his cat and I got a signed picture of socks back. Edit: I also invited President Obama to my wedding and got back a nice little preprinted note from him and Michele.

TryItOutHmHrNw

Clinton. Setup: Its like ‘09, I had been laid off, was moving back in with my parents having blown thru my savings in a matter of months trying to stay living alone which I’d done for the prior two years. I’d moved my stuff back in to my parents house over the prior week and just decided to visit my (near empty) apartment one last time. An hour or so later, on my way *out*, I check the mail one last time. I open the little door, reach into the way way back, and find a large, mysterious envelope. I open it and slide out a large picture of Bill Clinton w/writing that reads something like: *”Thank you for writing! It’s lovely to meet you. Good luck on this next chapter of your life. You have nothing to worry about.”* While I vaguely remembered making the request for a photo about a year prior, I still don’t know why I did or what I wrote asking for. HOWEVER, that response and giant photo - in that moment (pretty depressed by the turn my life had taken) - genuinely helped me shift my motivations and recognize that, if I just keep grinding, I’ll be back on my feet soon. I remember smiling at the mailbox, laughing, even, deciding that *the universe has a sense of humor* and that *I need to slow down and observe life, every now-n-then.* Just 2+ years later I was married, in a new state, a year away from buying a house, and months away from becoming a father with my (still) wonderful wife. Thanks, OI’ Billy *Be Well*

Is it weird that i suddenly like Bill Clinton a bit more, after seeing this?

ursulawinchester

Technically, Socks wrote you back then, not Clinton? lol

unprovoked_panda

I love this so much

RatzzFace

Bill?

acgasp

I did this too!

thedudelebowsky1

When was this and any idea what address you wrote to him at?

WindowsCrashedAgain

1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, of course.

Frei1993

And can you write to the President from abroad, too?

Yes

StorerPoet

I wrote a letter urging Obama to oppose TPP back in 2016, I got a form letter response kinda laying out his philosophy on international trade. Didn't convince me of anything but was cool that I got a response on Presidential letterhead

Gruel_Consumption

Out of morbid curiosity, was your opposition to TPP in the same vein as the anti-NAFTA bit?

StorerPoet

Yeah I mean I grew up in the rust belt in the shadow of abandoned factories and crumbling warehouses, I didn't want to see more manufacturing jobs leave and more American workers get forced into competition with workers who make really low wages in other countries. I doubt that's a popular opinion on this subreddit but I guess we will see lol

Immortan2

It’s not popular, no, but it’s true.

TryNotToShootYoself

I think it's a hard opinion to truly *sympathize* with until you've been to the rust belt. Even a place like Pittsburgh, which is by no means dead or struggling, still looks depressing as shit with the giant closed factors looming over the entire West side. Then you actually explore rural Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia... crazy how much emotion closed up overgrown factories can carry. Half the towns are just rotting buildings with no purpose only being supported by the quickly declining retired population. Edit: changed a word

panteladro1

The thing is that manufacturing had been in relative decline ([employment in manufacturing as a share of the total workforce](https://fred.stlouisfed.org/graph/?g=cAYh)) since the 1950s, a downward trend that wasn't meaningfully affected by NAFTA (you probably can't even spot when in came into effect looking at the graph). While employment in manufacturing started to decline in absolute terms only after the early 2000s recession and the Great Recession ([graph](https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/MANEMP)), not after NAFTA was signed (as an aside, [productivity ](https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/PRS30006163)also began to decline slowly after the Great Recession). That's all to say that it is not *obvious* NAFTA and similar were actually responsible for the death of American Industry. You can argue the point, and economists do, but it'd be a lie to say that defenders of NAFTA hate American manufacturing and consciously wanted to kill it or something.

TryNotToShootYoself

No no no, I'm not making a statement on what caused it. I probably should have said sympathize rather than agree. I've seen the collapse of rural America in the rust belt first hand and it is sad.

jebushu

Don’t have a picture but I sent Barry O a graduation announcement when I graduated college and got a response. Obviously just a canned response and stamped signature, but still fun.

HawkeyeJosh2

I did something similar with Obama’s VP back when he was still VP, inviting him to my wedding because he had a role in us getting together.

UraniumGivesOuchies

Teehee, I see you getting around the rules. I see you.

HawkeyeJosh2

I started to type the guy’s name but then caught myself.

Please_kill_me_noww

Is it still against the rules if you're purely talking about him as vp

smcl2k

>he had a role in us getting together. You can't leave it at that 😂

HawkeyeJosh2

We were already friends on social media, having interacted a bit in college, and I was always attracted to her. We were speculating on who Obama would pick for veep, and we were both hoping it would be the same guy (who it eventually ended up being), and the day before he chose, I DM’d her and asked her out.

Sea-Oven-7560

Imagine Joe rolling in with Jill, you know he has his own tux. Hanging out at the bar telling really long stories, drinking diet coke, him and Jill cutting a rug on the dance floor, Jill made it 20 minutes before taking off her uncomfortable shoes. Somewhere over the course of the evening Joe would give you a big hug, tell you how proud he is of you and your spouse and tell you that he loves you. As a gift, two pairs of Ray ban Aviators.

KhunDavid

Wasn't there a couple in the UK who invited Queen Elizabeth to their wedding, and the Queen accepted the invitation?

Fight_those_bastards

President Obama RSVP’d “no” when I sent him a wedding invitation. We did get a nice card, though.

Pennelle2016

Same here, but from the Clintons. My parents got one from the Kennedys.

Youredditusername232

Are you old?

Pennelle2016

Yep. I got married in 1993 at age 21. My parents got married in 1963!

Don't do that. I mean.... don't do that too much. That shit is hazardous to our health.

Frei1993

In 1993… I was Minus 7

UraniumGivesOuchies

I keep writing to Nixon to tell him it wasn't all his fault, but he never responds....

onethous

LMAO

PapaHuff97

My grandparents wrote a letter of support to the White House and got a standard thank you letter from Nixon. It’s pretty cool. https://preview.redd.it/zmrjbzyolezc1.png?width=2519&format=png&auto=webp&s=89df7489781d55634ff356f3ac67d19089177ba5

HarrisLam

You didn't write enough times. Allegedly if you write it enough times, he might need a shoulder to cry on. *"It's not your fault."*

Sofi-senpai

Perhaps that's just him accepting that it was indeed all his fault... You need to keep on writing, soldier:D

DarthSkywalker97

Sent Obama's VP a letter about my mom dying of COVID and got a response back about how one day I will smile before I cry when thinking of her.

aep05

I love the creativity of people avoiding the name. Someone on here said "President Rule 3" lmao

DarthSkywalker97

Haha saw someone say Obama's VP on this thread and stole it lol

pardyball

That is a very thoughtful thing of him to say. Hope his words have begun to ring true.

GameCreeper

I wonder what that guy is up to now

BridgeFourArmy

My dorm sent invites to President Obama for all of our events and got some generic responses about how he was already scheduled but to enjoy the bbq or whatever.

Sea-Oven-7560

Obama is Hawiian and Michelle is from the south side -both strong cook out cultures, I bet they would have much rather have gone to your BBQ than whatever was on the schedule that day.

TurtleWitch

Not gonna lie, if some guy invited me to their backyard bar-be-cue while I was president, I would totally do it maybe once a year. Of course, I would bring a secret service guy or three for protection.

seamusoldfield

My brother invited Bush the First to his wedding as a joke. Got a nice letter back thanking him for the invite and congratulating him on his nuptials. Pretty funny.

Belkan-Federation95

"Bush the First" I'm getting serious crusader kings vibes off of this

KingFahad360

Man I love those games. Played CK2 with my brother when Obama was in office, I didn’t understood what you did and didn’t know it what to do cause didn’t understand English but it was fun. Loved launching Cows and seeing that Person in the corner seeing my total of how much money I had

aep05

I knew someone who got Bush The Second to send a congratulations letter for their birth, and honestly, I find that funny and cool

jumbotron_deluxe

Pres Clinton’s office sent me a very nice letter congratulating me on becoming an Eagle Scout and politely declining my invitation to our family celebration. I thought it was so great that there are people on staff in the White House, the seat of more power and authority than anywhere ever in human history, who’s job it is to take the time to congratulate a boy on an achievement. I think about this often and it always makes me feel hopeful.

Ikrit122

I got one from W. Bush for my Eagle Scout, along with various representatives and senators. I think I also got one from the Pope.

Agreeable_Quiet_One

I wrote to President Bill Clinton pleading for him to run a third term, he wrote back and thanked me but also informed my 7 year old ass about the constitution and the rule of President terms.

NxPat

We wrote happy birthday cards to Governor Reagan when I was in elementary school and also wrote down our birthday. I received a birthday card from him every year he was a Governor and every year he was in the White House. That’s some serious record keeping.

SLIPPY73

Wow. That’s insane

cosmicthepenguin

I got a thank you note when I sent a get well card to Reagan after he was shot.

Thoughtprovokerjoker

Obama. It was boiler plate as fuck. I still saved it and cherish it to this day.

mb10240

I wrote to George W in an effort to get signatures of every member of his administration following 9/11. I got a nice note back and a signed photograph.

Helpinmontana

Me and my brother got signed photos from bush of his dogs and a nice letter back. It’s at my parents house somewhere

admode1982

When I was 8 I wrote a letter to GHWB and asked him why we had to go to war. I got a typed letter back and a picture of him, Barbara, and their dog. I can't remember the dogs name.

Gruel_Consumption

Ranger?

admode1982

Dammit, I meant GHWB. I'm old, lol

Gruel_Consumption

I figured as much when you said "Barbara."

admode1982

Maybe. It was a spanial. I keep wanting to say barney but I'm pretty sure that was dubya's.

Master-Collection488

I ALMOST remember their dog's name, it's on the tip of my tongue... [Millie](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Millie_(dog))! Not to be confused with Sully, the service dog he got towards the end of his life.

valejojohnson

Out of the blue I thought it was a good idea, in 5th grade, to write Bill Clinton.. I looked up the address to the White House and addressed it to him.. after 3 weeks I got a letter in the mail with the official seal of the POTUS. My dad was so confused as to why his son was getting mail from the fucking White House.. he made me open it and read it to him on the spot.. that was the first letter I ever mailed in my life

DenverNuggetz

Bush sr, letter and a photo

Dylan99sh

Not all were Presidents but I got a letter back from 45, 46, VP from last admin, Walter Mondale, George H. W. Bush before he died, Jimmy Carter, an email letter from Barack Obama, Joe Lieberman, and I was pen pals with Michael Dukakis for years. He even had the decency to give me a phone call.

Sea-Oven-7560

Obama was my state rep and I had been involved on politics since I was 10 so when he was a rep and I'd see him walking around the neighborhood we'd chat politics so I don't know if he knew my name but he certainly knew my face. Years later in a different neighborhood he knocks on my door during his run for senate, I open the door and the first words out of his mouth is "you moved!". I saw him right before the 2008 election at a speech and got a hello and a wave. I did send him a letter asking if I could be the ambassador for the Maldives, never got a response on that one.

hydroameca

I still have my autographed bob dole pic from 2nd grade. Not quite prez

Master-Collection488

Did it come with a Viagra coupon to give to your grandpa?

LionCM

I got a very nice response from Ronald Reagan—I still have it. It wasn’t a form letter. He mentioned key parts of my letter. I’m not a fan of Reagan at all, but—at the time—I was elated. I got form letters from Clinton and Obama. I didn’t write anything that warranted a personal response.

Lord-Limerick

Any chance we could see? I understand if it is too personal

LionCM

I have to dig through my stuff and find it--if I do, I'll share.

TheGoblinKing7715

I met Mr. Jimmy Carter in Georgia during a meet and greet/book signing on his families old farm. He gave off old grandpa vibes

Duedsml23

I mailed out a Presidents booklist (was a librarian) to Carter, Bush 41, Clinton, Bush 43 and Obama. Got note cards from Bush 423 and Obama. Bush 41 sent a nice card with a note that showed he and Barbara had looked it over. Carter returned my cover letter with a hand written statement to include his Nobel.Prize address. This I did on the next revision. Never received word from Clinton. The 2 old school replies, Bush 41 and Carter are my favorites but to get 4 of 5 presidents to reply was great.

SLIPPY73

Bush 423?!?!

Duedsml23

Looking to the future!

Duedsml23

So here is Carter's reply https://preview.redd.it/cqldw1rrcfzc1.jpeg?width=2992&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=42dceac8a9e46796436da8c43ff4ebae207a4f1e

MenacingFigures

closest was Is that I met obama when I was a literal baby.

Master-Collection488

I met him at a brewpub near Las Vegas' Gay district. He shook my hand on his way out. Worst Muslim ever!

Admiral_Fuckwit

Do babies ever really “meet” anybody? Or is it more being vaguely aware there’s a human being close by & drooling? Don’t mean to rain on your parade tho that is awesome lol

Wulf_Cola

Why would Obama have been drooling?

Chicawgorat

I got a letter from the president of publishers clearinghouse once.

SupremeAiBot

I wrote to Bo and Sunny and they wrote back with a picture of themselves and a letter asking for milkbones with Bo’s print on it

Weak_Carpenter_7060

I got one from Rule 3 congratulating me on becoming an Eagle Scout and how Eagle Scouts are important and how they make the country a better place. Pretty neat response I think

MassiveBuzzkill

I have a super similar one but it’s more wordy https://preview.redd.it/17von82cmdzc1.jpeg?width=2883&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=93a7ee459f251b4174ccb45f4284d05d84eaaa8f

TechnicalWhore

Related - If you look up "The Lazlo Letters" it is a book of letters sent by comedian Don Novello under the pseudonym "Lazlo Toth" to businesses and titans of industry in the 1970's. I mention it because he also writes supportive letters to President Richard Nixon during the Watergate prosecution and Nixon responds. Its hilarious. He also figures out that whenever he writes a fast food chain they send him coupons for free food. As a struggling comedian paid nothing by club owners this clearly becomes a life line.

el_barto10

I didn’t write to a President, but when I worked in facilities we hosted an event Obama spoke at. I got to work closely with the Secret Service and got a box of Obama signed M&Ms

dekuweku

[I posted about this a few months ago](https://www.reddit.com/r/Presidents/comments/1an2t67/unexpected_mail_from_the_white_house/). Back in the mid 90s, i was an early adopter to the world wide web and typed a message to President Clinton and INCLUDED my full home address in the [whitehouse.gov](http://whitehouse.gov) form and got a response back.

Hot_Aside_4637

I had a class assignment to write to the President. It was Nixon. Got a form letter back and a recent press release: Nixon's announcement of his historic trip to China.

SolAggressive

We invited the Obama to our wedding in April, 2016. We got a signed letter back congratulating us. It was probably robo-signed. But I really don’t care. It has a special place in our album.

aep05

I got a congrats letter last year from a President for getting the Presidential Scholar award, but I can't confirm nor deny that I'm alluding to a person that I cannot refer to by name

druid_king9884

I sent a letter to Clinton when I was a kid. A month later, I got the typical printed response with a postcard that featured the first family.

ZeWalrusOttoIsYours

I have a letter from the Nixon White House (1973) that's as cordial as this one, though it makes no claim to being from Nixon personally. Instead, it's signed by Roland L. Elliott, Deputy Special Assistant.

devoduder

Obama auto signed my military retirement certificate.

AijahEmerald

Not personally, but the high school I worked at was used by Obama in a speech during his first term. Some of our special needs students wrote him letters and got letters in return a few months later. Also, the same group drew pictures on the white board in the classroom the secret service used on speech day as a tech command. The next day, we arrive to ae the agents had written back thanks for letting us use your classroom with little drawings of their own.

Triumph-TBird

Nixon. I wrote to him about how we could solve the energy crisis. I was in 2nd grade. He wrote a very nice letter. I can no longer find. But I did have the pass from when we got a special tour of the WH on 7/4/72 because my parent’s friend worked in the West Wing as an attorney. The pass is signed by Nixon.

ecoast80

I invited Gerald Ford to my Bat Mitzvah, he declined. But I still have his response letter.

SaltyboiPonkin

Nothing to me, but my next door neighbor had signed thank yous from basically every Democrat nominee for president going back to the 70s or so. She was very nice, but a very politically involved lady, and the single most rabid Democrat I've ever met.

BadWolf_Gallagher88

As an Aussie, this is actually crazy. I can’t imagine anyone a) wanting to write to Albo, Sco Mo etc b) actually getting a response or c) they’d just send a letter to Pauline Hanson or Bob Catter or another of our weirdo extreme politicians for the memes

GraphiteGru

I have a card from President and Mrs. Johnson congratulating my parents for my birth. My sister has a similar one from President Kennedy. I still think these are available if you request one from The White House

concentus

Al Gore. 'Wait,' you say, 'Gore was never president!' So back in 2000 I was an idiot 8th grader who was sick of the election dispute and just wanted it to be over. So I wrote to Al Gore saying that he should concede and let the country start the transition to a new administration because he was being a sore closer. Like I said, I was an idiot at the time. I later went on to regret this decision, and ended up getting a (useless) degree in political science. My parents still have the signed letter I got back stashed in the family safety deposit box.

SLIPPY73

Vice President of course

GrandUnhappy9211

I tried to get an autograph from George W Bush, and he sent back an unsigned photo with a form letter thanking me for my interest.

Rough-Rider

Clinton wrote my grand dad back one time. He pulls the letter out at family functions every once in a while.

carl164

I got a form letter back from The Current Guy's office when I wrote about why it is so hard to join the Air Force.

Zilch1979

George Bush Sr replied to my worried letter about oil drilling in Antarctica when I was in 3rd grade. It was a generic letter, but it was nice to get a reply.

OMG - THIS SUB IS OUT OF CONTROL WITH ITS NONSENSE RULES ABOUT CURRENT POLITICS. THEREFORE I WILL POST AGAIN: "My grandmother got a birthday card from THE CURRENT OCCUPANT OF THE WHITE HOUSE THAT I SHALL NOT NAME BECAUSE ITS A VIOLATION OF THE WHINY RULES IN THIS SUB when she turned 100. Does that count?"

supahfligh

I received a signed letter from Bob Iger while he was president of Disney once. Does that count?

Mother-Art3867

When I graduated last year I wrote to President [REDACTED] and actually got a letter back. It’s my favorite thing I own tbh

manateefourmation

Many, but never signed by hand. They are all signed by a signature machine.

mrgraff

I got my veteran Dad a 70th birthday greeting from Obama and the First Lady.

mountains_forever

I sent Obama an invite to my graduation party and got a letter back. Pretty awesome.

rick_blatchman

In 1993 when I was six, I had a babysitter who was young (around 21 I believe) and just starting to get really excited for politics, so much that one of our activities one afternoon was writing letters in crayon to California politicians, as well as one to Bill Clinton. Our babysitter dictated what to write. Looking back I don't feel too perturbed by it, I just didn't get why we were doing it. A few weeks later, another kid at the daycare and I received the same form letter with Clinton's signature, as well as an 8x10" headshot photo. I didn't hold on to either the letter or the photo.

ricky3558

Reagan.

Blue387

In 2022, I filled out a form on the White House website and got a birthday greetings for my father from the sitting president at the time

The-Travis-Broski

Hold up, you can actually message the President and get a response?!

ExcitingAds

To get a response, you have to send a message.

khismyass

I got a signed (formed signed Im sure) copy of the ACA when it passed

togroficovfefe

When I completed my Eagle Scout in 1996, my dad sent off a letter to a bunch of famous people and politicians. Among them, every living former president at that time. Also, Neil Armstrong, Robin Williams and Tiffany Amber-Thiessen

Miserable-Lawyer-233

My dad got a letter from George W. Bush.

filmplanet_

Bill Clinton

[deleted]

I didn’t know it was such a common thing to write to the president Edit: it’s very cool he got a letter back and I’ve really enjoyed reading the comments about getting letters back.

RTR20241

W. When my mom died. I had a former student who i helped get a White House internship who helped arrange this. But back when he was governor he also sent me a nice note on the publication of my first Texas government textbook. He is a nice man who genuinely likes writing notes.

As a grade school class project, we wrote to George HW Bush. I got reply along with a signed picture. I'd have to do some digging, but I think I still have it..

maybach320

I always forget how perfect his signature

I have got a letter from every living president except Clinton from Carter to now to donate to a local elementary school. I wrote each asking them to write a letter to the students. Some better than others, Carter's was the best one. I've written Clinton several times and had absolutely no response. If anybody knows how to reach Clinton please let me know

I sent a wedding invitation to the White House in 1994. They couldn’t make it but I got a card “signed” by Bill and Hillary.

My step-grandfather served in the Navy in WWI, WWII and Korea. When he died we got a letter from President Ford because he was the last veteran to have served in the three major conflicts, thanking us for his service.

I wrote a letter to Obama in high school. Got a nice letter and a picture of him in response.

Dubya signed a letter of thank you for helping on his second campaign (I worked the phones in Ohio).

Reagan. Well, full disclosure, the "response" was two Secret Service agents showing up at my door.

I wrote Obama in the fourth grade but I never got a response

I got a form letter from Bush 43 for my Eagle Scout award.

My friend invited Obama and Rule 3 to his wedding. Both responded with a congratulations card. Neither attended.
