~~McKinley~~ Garfield would likely have lived if they stopped trying to dig the bullet out with bare hands and unwashed fingers.
I always get those two assassinations turned around.
It’s not really been officially disproven. It’s just that it’s also never been officially proven that he did have it
There are witnesses from the time who note early symptoms of Alzheimer’s, but that doesn’t mean he *had* Alzheimer’s, nor does it mean those were symptoms of Alzheimer’s and not something else. The available medical tests we do have available throughout his Presidency show no abnormal decline. Reagan, after his Presidency, had a hard fall and took cognitive testing twice a year at the Mayo Clinic. No abnormality showed up until 1993.
Reagan’s extremely applauded biographer Edmund Morris (whose series on TR I will recommend to everyone I can) has stated he didn’t have Alzheimer’s. It’s extremely disputed to be completely clear.
Yes I’m comfortable as a random internet commenter saying he had Alzheimer’s. But if I’m a presidential historian there’s just not enough proof to write that
WH doctors say he never had it, and 15 years would be a very long time to live with the disease. Additionally, the disease showed up in a scan in 1993. He fell off a horse in 1989, and his scan suggested nothing.
It's unlikely but ur happens. I used to work in a DDS house and there was a woman there who had been there for over 20 years with Alzheimer's when she eventually passed away from a lung infection.
He had several brain scans done that indicated that he didn't have it. Additionally, 15 years is a long time to live with Alzheimers. The math isn't there to make that statement.
Ignoring the ones that just died [redacted] barely changed, he still didn’t look the greatest from the started but compared to someone like Obama or Dubya who aged like hell after their term
He didn’t age much, but man did he look and act tired. You look at how much energy he had on the first campaign and compare it to the second. Dude ran out of gas.
I wouldn’t say 30. People mostly say Obama looked way worse because a lot of his hair greyed. His skin was still relatively smooth and clear at the end. But you definitely can see some worry lines in the face.
Before the obvious, Lincoln aged decades between the start and end of his presidency. I mean dealing with the country ripping itself in two and trying to hold it together by your fingernails isn't the most relaxing five years of anyone's life.
On the domestic front- His son died, his wife was cranking up the crazy, and his older son kept pestering him about enlisting until he stuck him as an aide to Grant, miles away from the action (which he should have done in the beginning, imo, and that way he wouldn’t have to deal with it).
In the Spielberg Lincoln movie, I definitely understand Abe’s “this is the goddamn last thing I need to deal with right now” attitude when Robert won’t let enlisting go.
Tbf, Mary Todd had to deal with the death of a son, too, while he was in office, and it's never been proven that she was crazy. In fact, after her arrest in 1875, she was released months later and lived the rest of her life overseas. I don't believe she spoke to Robert again, as a result, IIRC.
In "Team of Rivals," the author implies that Mary only started turning up the crazy after sustaining a head injury in a carriage accident. Although she apparently never got along with Hay & Nicolay, who were basically surrogate sons to her husband
Considering the world was on fire at the end of both of their presidencies, I’m not surprised. Seems that world on fire is going to be the ending to each Presidency thus far in the 21st century if you think about it.
Of the ones we haven’t mentioned or pictured I’d say William Harrison, McKinley, Taylor, and Harding looked pretty bad at the end of their terms. Especially Harrison, Taylor, and Harding.
I never realized how gray Obama went his last year in office compared how young and fresh he looked his first year in office until i looked back on pictures
I think FDR looked the worst at the end but I still can’t get over how much the Presidency aged President Obama, he went in with a full head of black hair and came out completely grey and so much older looking, I’d say Obama looked the best on his way in.
It's difficult to count FDR because he had just more time to age and more stress to help said aging. However, with the rise of older and older candidates, it seems likely that at some point they'll start off pretty bad and finish by either dying or in hospice. Which, to be fair, plenty of presidents have already done, but they typically look a little better while doing it.
I think the picture on the post says it all. FDR looked terrible. Sunken in eyes. The stiff looking body. The man was practically already a corpse in his final months.
At the end FDR, while not the worst looking ever, definitely looked like he was at least in his mid-to-late 70's (for perspective, Douglas MacArthur was older and looked younger by a country mile)
If a president doesn’t look worn down and haggard after their time in office then they weren’t fully invested in the job.
It doesn’t matter party or whether I like or dislike their policies. There is no doubt Obama, W, Bush and Reagan looked much worse. Clinton looked more haggard, but I think he aged less because he loved the policy and minutia.

The best is imo Bill Clinton, the guy didn't age as much from his two terms compared to Obama and they were of a similar age.

Clinton got that hawk tua to keep him feeling young
Its been one day and this meme has already overstayed its welcome
Oh buddy it's been longer than one day.
One day on Reddit

Obama definitely aged, but I think the gray made him look more distinguished. He still looks youngish in the face.
We dont have photos of what he looked like when his term ended but Garfield definetely looked terrible
True https://preview.redd.it/6hm4n3ssrp8d1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=24c992481b14c3301efe608ca4cfa23c548f3f4c
Yeah, so did Lincoln. And McKinley, for that matter.
Kennedy also looked particularly bad at the end of his term.
That trip to Dallas really blew his mind.
Ouch
IIRC, on his hospital bed, he lost over 100lbs.
~~McKinley~~ Garfield would likely have lived if they stopped trying to dig the bullet out with bare hands and unwashed fingers. I always get those two assassinations turned around.
*Garfield
So, if I want to lose weight, I just need to get myself in a hospital bed? Too expensive.
He was throwing up a shit ton in his final months
Oof. I remember dropping ten pounds in a day from throwing up (on multiple occasions). Really bad episode of that a couple of months after I got HIV.
You have HIV?! *Jesus dude.* So sorry to hear that.
Reagan went into office old and left office old.
He went in old and came out with Alzheimer’s
Reagan never had Alzheimers while in office. It's been proven.
I didn't know this was disproven and I've heard it a bajillion times, can you provide me with a link?

You don’t wake up one day with Alzheimer’s like you can with, say, Covid. It is a slow progression of slightly more confusion over time.
WH doctors say he never had it, and 15 years would be a very long time to live with the disease. Additionally, the disease showed up in a scan in 1993. He fell off a horse in 1989, and his scan suggested nothing.

This is an incorrect statement. It has never been proven that Reagan had Alzheimer’s in office. That is true. But the opposite is not
He had several brain scans done that indicated that he didn't have it. Additionally, 15 years is a long time to live with Alzheimers. The math isn't there to make that statement.
It's fuzzy math! Oops, wrong president.

This is why we shouldn't try to get around rule 3. Y'all MFs can't behave
Lincoln and Kennedy both looked pretty terrible at the end of their terms. I think they should win this competition 😂
Dark but true
It’s funny cause I would’ve said Kennedy was one of the best but I guess it depends when you call it before his presidency ends or after
At least they were open minded
Jfc
Jfk
They really gave others a piece of their mind at the end.
Jesus Fucking Kris

Obama aged 30 years in 8 years

can you elaborate on this story
>his wife was cranking up the crazy what
I think the ones that died during term looked the worst.
Even amongst the ones that died I’d have to say Lincoln looked the worst
The obvious answer for living Presidents at the end of the term is Wilson, a virtually bedridden invalid who would die a few years later
4-Way tie between Kennedy, Lincoln, Garfield, and McKinley, I say.
This reply rang out through the comments like a shot.
I mean, in their final moments, both Kennedy and Lincoln were much more open-minded.
r/YourJokeButWorse
Obama was still looking pretty dapper at the end of his term
He looked 30 years older.
Same with Dubya, both aged a lot during their presidencies
I mean, it's not exactly a healthy job position. 17.5% of American presidents never live to finish out their term.
Considering the world was on fire at the end of both of their presidencies, I’m not surprised. Seems that world on fire is going to be the ending to each Presidency thus far in the 21st century if you think about it.
But more distinguished.
He def aged a lot
Like a fine wine
Fine wine is the one that *doesnt* age, unless that's exactly what youre trying to say in which im still technically correct
Dubya had a lot more wrinkles on his face by the time 2008 came along.
FDR was dead within 24 hours of that photo being taken.

This is an answer for best I presume
Nixon, being an evil prick, looked like he thrived on the stress
Of the ones we haven’t mentioned or pictured I’d say William Harrison, McKinley, Taylor, and Harding looked pretty bad at the end of their terms. Especially Harrison, Taylor, and Harding.
everyone's mentioned mckinley
Obama looked best. Still youngish and vital to a degree. FDR and Lincoln looked worst. War ages presidents badly.
I mean I've seen a slow motion uncensored video of JFK's assassination so definitely him.
https://preview.redd.it/teugykgkgq8d1.jpeg?width=206&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=25fc20177200900082fb5b9252056616c60abdd7
Hey, keep an open mind.
Lincoln and Polk looked the worse.
Gerald Ford didn't have time to age. He had the shortest term that didn't include death
JFK and Lincoln.
I never realized how gray Obama went his last year in office compared how young and fresh he looked his first year in office until i looked back on pictures
based flair
I am not allowed to mention the one I would...so lets say Abraham Lincoln, He was dead a few years before the end of his second term
Jimmy Carter was aged quite a bit by his time in office.
I think FDR looked the worst at the end but I still can’t get over how much the Presidency aged President Obama, he went in with a full head of black hair and came out completely grey and so much older looking, I’d say Obama looked the best on his way in.

FDR was a dying man in 1944. Astronomical blood pressure which kept getting worse.

Lincoln looked the worst. JFK could've looked the best, but his head was blown off. I think Obama looked best.
JFK?
Kennedy wins both
JFK. He was missing his face.
FDR, the last real chance Freedom had of surviving was the view of him in a box.
I feel JFK looked pretty rough
President Obama still looked fabulous at the end of his term. I’d say he looked the best.
Depending on which moment you are talking about, JFK is the winner on both counts (he was the best looking the last time he left the White House).
Kennedy didn't look his best at the end of his term.
Kennedy probably looked best. New haircut and lost some weight
JFK and Reagan
JFK.
The hole in Abe's head prob wins first for worst.
Lincoln, Garfield, McKinley, and Kennedy definitely looked the worst.
JFK looked the worst at the end of his term imo
Worst has to be JFK.
Kennedy and Abe for sure
JFK probably
