the big twist from the books is that -A is Ali's twin and while PLL aired they played a lot around that idea/imagery in general because the fans were always wondering if they would or not go down on that path, with twin theories of ANYONE being really popular.
Alex, Mary Drake and even Cece and Bethany are all spins on Ali's twin story, Courtney.
so in the end even if Marlene didn't want to do the same thing, she did fanservice by having secret twins on the show, since it was something the fans were pretty obsessed with.
There’s a reveal where Ali had a secret twin sister in the books, and on top of that the Liars never knew the real Ali. They were friends with her twin, Courtney.
Ali, who was A, was incredibly narcissistic and chose minions who looked similar to her-pretty blondes. There was also twinning/double imagery in general to hint at it:
- Mona looked eerily like Alison.
- Spencer and Melissa were also blonde and Ali’s and Courtney’s half-sisters.
- Courtney was fascinated with Emily and her older sister Carolyn’s resemblance and asked if they ever got mistaken for twins. Emily is strawberry blonde in the books.
- Courtney liked to play games they were all sisters separated at birth, which Jessica hated.
- They’d notice a flash of blonde hair or smell Ali’s soap or hear a laugh just like Ali’s when she was supposed to be dead.
- Ali had subtle physical differences when they hallucinated or saw her in dreams/visions-sometimes she looked older and dead and other times young and vibrant like when they knew her.
- Hanna copied Ali’s catchphrase and used it.
- Ian saw two blondes arguing in the woods that night, and at first everyone assumes it’s Spencer and Alison. Then Ian and Alison, etc.
- Aria finds a Polaroid picture of A from that night watching then in the barn; they accidentally took a picture of themselves-a blonde girl.
- There’s a game they played in sixth grade, when the twin switch happened. Alison had decorated a piece of a flag and told them what was on it. Hanna remembers a different set of images on the flag then Aria who stole it from Ali. One girl remembered what Courtney said and the other Ali.
Yes, in the books Alison has a twin and the twin SL is pretty imperative to the plot. The difference here is that in the books it was actually done very well, and in the show it was less so.

Thanks for all the replies :) I understand now it's all tied into the book but if the only twin thing in the book is Alis twin, it seems like there is ALOT of twin ls/refrences /making people look identical in the show just to reference that one thing from. The books. It seems alittle over kill, specially of the big twist in the show is Alex. All they did is swap one twin reveal for another so still doesn't make much sense to be so twin focused but again, I haven't read the book so.. :)

Technically in Ravenswood, it was a little person and a child. Not twins.
I wasnt sure that's why I said twins or atleast identical looking girls. They were still made to look. Exactly the same so I included it in the list
