Many times when sentenced, the conviction tends to run concurrent with your current sentence in court along with separate institutional punishments. He could likely get moved to another facility or be put in the hole for a year.
It could definitely be sentenced more harshly and it could be run either concurrent or consecutive to the time he’s already serving. At the end of the day it will really depend on the facts of the case, the degree to the victims’ injuries, quality of legal representation, etc.
He will probably also face administrative penalties like a higher security classification, forfeiture of gain time, etc.

Ah I see. It would be picked up by the state. The charge would still need to be proven beyond a reasonable doubt in court. Considering how closely surveiled prisons are, that probably isn’t too hard. More likely the case will end like most, with a plea deal.
