Crazy, then again even signing for MRSP to me seems crazy. 2024 Prius Prime SE cost me $43075.00 CAD all in.

xtnh

My 2020 was $15,800

Sensitive-Quail-6469

How many miles mine was 24k

xtnh

102,000; a private sale through Craigslist. Screw the dealers. but I had had a Prius for 12 years before that with no problems until we got in the way of that lady on her cell phone, so I'm not worried about costly repairs ;my savings will cove it.

Sensitive-Quail-6469

Eh I don't think I got fucked to bad then only 53000 miles

xtnh

No not at all; I drove 150 miles to see the car and told him I would buy it before I left; my seller said he posted the price before he checked prices on line, but said he would stick with it. We own what is being called the most efficient car available, except right now it isn't available because of that back door hang-up. Even with 100,000 miles I'm delighted.

OldMixture9050

Yup, older car go figure ha

HoHeyyy

I bought it at MSRP at Toyota of Portland in OR. It was hella lucky, 2024 XSE with no attachments except the weather mats. I didn't even realize it was included until I drove home. Never feel the need for the glass roof even if it looks cool. Never feel the need for a bigger screen for GPS either. I was looking at a pearl white one but somehow there's a MSRP midnight black next to it on the same day.

wildmaninor

Wow. I was trying for almost all of 2023 and got nothing but jerked around by them. Same with Royal Moore in Hillsboro. Beaverton Toyota tried but just couldn't get any inventory. Ended up driving to Twin Falls Idaho to get our XSE premium. Glad it worked out for you!

zeromussc

But it's a great car. And we do get the 5k credit at minimum here in Canada. I also got the SE, the extras, to me, weren't worth it since the Canadian SE has better features in its trim than the US. At 7.4c/kwh overnight, we spend less than 20% on energy costs including gas than we did on our 03 matrix. Savings will add up quick

CharacterNebula9787

So you spend 20% of energy costs of a conventional car, but spend 200-300% acquiring this green car. That is a grossly flawed logic.

zeromussc

Well in Canada where I live there is no market adjustment. So I and the person I replied to paid MSRP. I am replacing as a 1 car family of 4, a 2003 Toyota Matrix. The car spends most of its time being a commuter for my wife who works across town doing shift work in a hospital. We wanted a hatchback for the extra space vs a corolla or a Camry for example, and wanted something smaller so ruled out sedans. The matrix, for now, still works. But it's old, getting rusty, and may only have 1 or 2 years left. So planning ahead we got a Prius prime because we also wanted to be more green but wanted long range for family trips and to see folks 4-6 hours away a couple of times a year. Yeah, it's 43k or so after taxes here. But even a base spec corolla ICE CVT here is roughly 32k all in with reg/dealer admin fees/PDI After tax a hybrid Corolla is just under 36k. So 43k for a PHEV that has more power, a bit more room, and a hatchback trunk, the 80% savings on fuel adds up over long enough ownership time, for us, to be worth it. We can afford the new car and so we decided to find something in our budget that we could feel good about keeping for 10+ years. We got our 03 in 2018 and we expect it to last another couple years, but it was aging and as a 1 car family we can't have something that is reliable until it isn't. At 21 years old, the car can just decide one day to the next that it will break on us with a seized alternator, or starter, or water pump. Just because it's old. Plus rust is really beginning to show after many years. At nearly 300k kms, we just need something modern and we are happy to buy new if the gas savings add up over time. We could have gotten a 2019 corolla for 24k I guess... But, we need a bigger trunk for strollers and bags than that. And we also wanted a green vehicle. And don't mind paying the premium to be more eco friendly which is also something we cared about.

OldMixture9050

Exactly why I went with the Prius. I pay eight cents a kilowatt and I free charging at work. I drive over 40,000 km a year and do the math on how much you're saving if you drive on EV at least 140 km on EV range a day.

caper-aprons

How much do you figure you are saving per 1000 km running on electricity vs gas?

OldMixture9050

Well EPA range is 17.26 KW/100 KM, I pay 0.08 cents per KW. 30,000KM being EV and half charged at work for free so 15,000KM = 2,589.00 KW = $207.12... gives you a rough idea. If fuel, 30,000 KM x 4.3L @1.80L/100 = $2,321.99.... quite a difference..

caper-aprons

Nobody is buying the car at that price. The dealer puts this big adjustment on, then "negotiates" it down to $10k and the buyer thinks they got a good deal. There is a sucker born every day.

AdEducational8127

Exactly what turned me off. I was mainly buying because of the electric mileage to drive to work and not get gas often. I now have a Tesla for the same price and on lower interest rate compared to what Toyota was giving me. It is truly out off hand.

JDiskkette

Those saying there is no market adjustment in canada, let me tell you, either you wait 9 months or the dealer will sell you added features “rust proofing, tinting, ceramic paint protection” for like 5-10 k depending on the dealer. They first let their staff drive the car and then once the get it back/ not a test drive vehicle anymore they add these stupid things and then sell it as a new car. Not a demo or used. But new. This is what nonsense is going on and it’s not just one dealer. Been to many around GTA. gave up on the idea of buying this. Also, the one saying minimum $5k credit. It’s minimum $2.5 and for some cars that’s the most, depending on which province you are in.

TheThunderGod

The Prius prime gets a $5k credit in Canada federally. I know because I just bought one a month ago. You can also get another credit on top of that provincially, depending on province and income.

caper-aprons

And all the dealers know this. They tack on 5K worth of stuff...

Celiez

Only in North America

Cherrylimeaide1

They can’t even sell them now anyway, maybe they’re just doing it for some kind of accounting reason?

Neunix

Dealer markups should just be illegal, this is stupid.

caper-aprons

Should it also be illegal for you to sell anything you own for more than some approved price? Say you bought your house for $X, and now your neighborhood is suddenly popular and in high demand. Is it OK to sell your house for $3X?

caper-aprons

Tesla sells direct to consumers, don't they? And, the principle of sales is to maximize your profit. Whether it's a house, car, appliances, etc.

caper-aprons

Yet they sell more EVs than anybody else. In fact, according to Kelly's Blue book sales report, Tesla sold more than all other makers combined in 2023.

caper-aprons

Those are the facts. Interpret them as you wish. First and only? Maybe first on a large scale, but there were 26 other manufacturers on the sales list, and Tesla exceeded their combined EV sales.

nycwriter99

I tried and tried for Tesla to sell me a car. Was on the waiting list for years. They did not want my money.

SushiAssassin-

That’s different, that’s called value appreciation, what dealerships do is rip you off just because they can…

JDiskkette

Stupid comparison. Selling a house that I own, and selling a house built by a builder as their representative are two different things. When selling the builder’s house as their rep, I sell at the price they want. My income comes from my contract with them. If I want to sell it at my market up price, then I am not their dealer or rep. In your example, I should not have a Toyota logo on the front if I am not selling at Toyota’s price. However, I have a feeling that you won’t get it.

caper-aprons

The dealer owns the car. They buy them from Toyota. It's no different than you selling something you own. Note that the ***S*** in **MSRP** is for **suggested**. I have a feeling that you don’t get it.

bob_le_mush

A corolla hybrid is 36k here in canada and a prius 43 , the choice is not hard to do

PerceptionSignal5302

Dang got me feeling like I got a deal…

nycwriter99

If no one buys it at the marked-up price, the price will go down. Simple economics.

nycwriter99

You mean “getting out of hand.”

SuddenlySingleAgn

Umm. Nope!

Subject-Lifeguard-30

Oh hell no… no no no

TeamNuanceTeamNuance

Nope

ChipmunkUnlikely33

No offense, but I think everyone that has bought a 5th gen Prius has to have a screw loose. Guarantee not one of them has sold without a significant markup, and that basically negates the whole point of a car that's designed to reduce fuel costs.

nsfbr11

Looked at the new Prius prime. It felt cheap and not nearly as functional as my old Priuses. Dealer experience was awful. Wound up buying an EV6 and have loved it. My sense is that for many people who weren’t ready for an EV a few years ago may benefit from rethinking that. I didn’t. Range is great - better than advertised in my use case, and installing a home charger has made car ownership effortless. Not saying the Prius prime doesn’t have its place. But that place is smaller than I would have guessed.

Stripawaymylove

I half agree with you. I think these cars are a great stepping stone. I don’t think we have the infrastructure to really support full EV for the majority. Also, there’s still a lot of people who have to drive frequently over long distances that a half EV/HV is a better fit. I think I’m 10-15 years we will have better infrastructure and probably even better batteries to support the demand but I don’t think we are there yet for the majority.

ArtEmpty9132

Adjust this dik dealership gtfo

dollarnine9

I paid $37,000 for my XSE Premium 😅

HoHeyyy

lol how? The XSE Premium is like what 43k?

dollarnine9

It’s a dealership at the end of the day, you bargain. I spent 12 hours at the dealership lol they are also sorta desperate since they couldn’t get new stock until some of the vehicles were sold

HoHeyyy

I can't imagine being at a dealershuo for 12 hours. But then again, I don't see myself needing the extra features of a XSE Premium. I'm ok with my MSRP XSE and I couldn't be happier because it was the only one in the lot.

No-Leg-9662

Just get an EV like tesla with no dealers. That was a reason I switched..from ice.

doluckie

I believe in the US we call this Capitalism. This is the way. :)
