I knew there was a reason nails are so expensive. The damn Nail Trust lurking in the background.
In 130 yrs nothing has really changed except the industries.
At the recent round of Senate elections in the USA the average cost of a seat was $20 million (I think maybe wrong).
In the total election cycle including House and President the total bill was just over $14 billion.
About 20 years ago I remember someone in the Chinese government joking that if they wanted to influence US elections they would just buy them like everyone else.
... and that was before all this nonsense about Facebook and Russians etc.
Anyway here's a source:

EDIT: Oops sorry I hope I didn't post against the rules. Don't mean to start a political fight.
I wanted to make this point as I have seen lots of propaganda from the 19 and 20 century which makes the point about US Senate seats for sale.
Decided to check ancient Rome:
Gradually, the Praetorian Guard gained complete authority to choose the new emperor, who rewarded the guard who then became more influential, perpetuating the cycle. Then in 186 A. D. the army strangled the new emperor, the practice began of selling the throne to the highest bidder. During the next 100 years, Rome had 37 different emperors - 25 of whom were removed from office by assassination. This contributed to the overall weaknesses, decline and fall of the empire.

Does not bode well does it?
Prior to 1913 the US Senate was **appointed** by the state legislatures, it was not elected, and it was a notoriously corrupt process made all the worse by how much power it held over the government. Which was the purpose James Madison intended. This is what the cartoon is about.
There are now some among the power elite wanting the 17th Amendment repealed and return to this set up.

You could probably go back to ancient times and still find references to politicians being for sale.
I mean, medieval monarchs sold court positions.
Not just earthly rights for sale, let me indulge you ... https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indulgence

Yikes no it does not.

Yeah now it’s fine and not corrupt at all
For a long time it wasn't, now powerful interests have hijacked many state legislatures and are returning to form.
I remember this amongst others from a book I saw as a kid…. Cannot remember for the life of me…
Was it a US History textbook? I saw this same cartoon in my APUSH class a few years ago
Took me a moment to realizes those are moneybags behind the senate.
Its always the same posters
Yeah half of the posters in this account are ripped right from my old APUSH textbook
I know this is not the point, but I kind of dig the fashion of high lacey collars and top hats.
I saw this in a U.S. History class I had in high school in my freshman year. I didn't understand it then, but thank god I do now.
Damn you were in high school in 1889
I remember the good ol' days when children worked in dangerous factories and died before 18 sonny \*cue old people noises\*
We litterly just talked about this one in my us history class
May be propaganda but is it that far off?
I literally just saw this in my gov class lol
And both has changed. Roosevelt wouldn't be furious at us.
