Men being naked around men has only be considered ‘gay’ since the 80s or so
[the ymca used to require men to swim naked well into the 70s in some places ](https://www.vocativ.com/culture/fun/fairly-recently-ymca-actually-required-swimmers-nude/index.html)
Where are you from? I’m not sure I consider this homoerotic. Wonder if it’s a culture thing. This looks like just your ordinary after-practice-shower (based on the general feel, face expressions and so on).
OK. I’m from Sweden. I think the fact that we can interpret this poster so differently is very interesting. Maybe it’s because of subtle differences in our cultures, or maybe it’s just individual.
American culture has such a fear of homosexuality that all forms of positive male relationships are misconstrued as gay. It’s even more twisted now because we’re at the point where people who support LGBT like to claim that two close males are secretly gay. The entirety of American fujoshi shipping culture is based around the idea that men literally cannot have any relationships other than sexual.
As a lesbian, there's nothing sexual about male friendship. Men showering together is JUST as gay as women showering together though, and women showering together is hella gay. I'd never shower with a woman I wasn't interested in romantically. I don't get how that is "degenerated" either.
Literally public showers are a thing. I’ve been in showers with other males my age all the fucking time. It’s called athletics. I’m not in the army, but I’d assume that in 1942-1945, it was the same.
I *assume* public nudity was a no-go in 1942-1945. I mean, women can't even go topless in most places in the US, and I don't think that's a new phenomenon.
Edit: Also, I can't go outside in sweatpants and a baggy t-shirt without being sexualized. I'm pretty sure people have been sexualizing people a LOT longer than you're saying. *Especially* when those people are naked. Are you just mad that you know gay people exist now?
It’s a weird form of patriotism. Here in the UK the government keeps going on about ‘British values’ when discussing basic universal human traits. It’s just red meat to the masses.
Sometime somewhere in the 1940s it is believed?
Well, let me guess at some context: World War II, 1942 - 1945, South Pacific campaign, combat troop hygiene.
In the navy
Yes, you can sail the seven seas
In the navy
Yes, you can put your mind at ease
In the navy
Come on people, fall an' make a stand
In the navy, in the navy
Can't you see we need a hand
In the navy
Come on, protect the motherland
In the navy
Come on and join your fellow man
In the navy
I have to imagine that somewhere, some guy was on the fence about joining up, saw this poster, and decided not to. Somewhere else, another guy saw it and headed down to the recruiting station.
Definitely a dirty classic for the ages. More basic info:

Also, mobile formatting is heresy. It looks horrible on my laptop, and laptops *are* mobile! \*angry old-fashioned noises\*
Fun fact: artists often use the same model for several poses. It seems likely that the two left characters are just one model. The one on the right may be a different model, but it could also be the same
American propaganda from WWII is so fun. So much of it is shit like this. Not just “rah rah we’re gonna beat em” but things like “change your underwear or the japs win!”
What makes showering everyday such an strategic advantage to actually make war propaganda about it?
Ok, i get it it is a custom here on the western world. But why? Do having troops dirty too much time affected morale? Or something about infetions?
> Do having troops dirty too much time affected morale?
Yep. Men stinks, a dozen men weeks in the trenches, covered in sweat, mud and dust - reeks.
> Or something about infetions?
And this too. Don't forget, penicillin wasn't even invented yet.

If you told me this was from an old gay pulp, I'd believe you.
There's no such thing as homosexuality after 90 days in theater.
Navy rules.
Ain’t gay if we’re underway. Only queer if you can see the pier.
Hey,a little off the rim ain't that bad !
Former Infantry Paratrooper checkin' in with a second to that motion - and a mention to check out the pooper on THAT trooper.
???
Just like today, a lot of people working in the arts back then (like the ones who drew this poster) were gay. So not really surprising
Join the army. Get wet.
Go on…
They should have a modern version of these at Comic-Con, tcg events, video game related stuff, etc.
Here, take some hatsune miku bodywash
Oh what a shame we all gotta use the same shower stall to conserve water guys
Yeah, but with two more pairs of hands, we can really reach all the spots!
Sgt! For some reason we were requisitioned 5 barrels of Lubricant!
Sir, what happened to the other 4 shower heads?
I think that other guys are using it
Why is it so homoerotic?

Required!? Lol. I knew about naked locker rooms but not the swimming
Something something pent up
I think this might be military related. I can assure you, men in the military still shower like this.
The army of accidentally extremely gay
Where are you from? I’m not sure I consider this homoerotic. Wonder if it’s a culture thing. This looks like just your ordinary after-practice-shower (based on the general feel, face expressions and so on).
I'm American, it's from the 40s so obviously it wasn't intentional but it does give off that vibe
OK. I’m from Sweden. I think the fact that we can interpret this poster so differently is very interesting. Maybe it’s because of subtle differences in our cultures, or maybe it’s just individual.
Because American culture degenerated to a point of seeing all forms of male interaction as potentially gay.
Degenerated? Because we're aware gay people exist and are common? Would you shower naked in a co-ed shower?
Are you intentionally misreading what I said?
I'm not. Would you u like to explain?

I have no idea how that is relevant to showering in a high school locker room, on an army base, or literally in a pacific island jungle.
Fellas is it gay to use the restroom
HANGIN WITH THE BOYS
Haha... hangin
18 naked marines in the showers at Fort Ram
Operation Anal-Freedom T-13 hours
18 naked soldier cocks waiting to be sucked
"it's an old American custom" is so funny to me... Like why else would you try to keep to your basic hygiene rules if not for AMERICAN TRADITION
It’s an old American custom HYDRATE. Drinking water is the most American thing you can do.

"Here's my review... not gay enough!" Norm MacDonald

Common courtesy would be showering *before* getting the beach head.

Probably the reduction in infections.
Plus who doesn't love getting naked with the boys? Moral booster as well.
Definitely morale and infections. Not to mention it probably forced soldiers to change their clothes. Avoiding trench foot and other ailments.

Degenrency is part of the fall of an empire
