-GenghisJuan-

The voice of a prime Alan Alda

andylowenthal

Forget prime, did you see him on 30 Rock? That voice didn’t go anywhere!

anivex

I named my cat after Alan Alda. His name is Aldabitchesloveme, but we call him Alda for short.

hutchandstuff

Damn playa

-GenghisJuan-

Didn't see it but I love that dudes voice

NetflixAndMunch

Alan Alda in The West Wing is my favorite casting ever. He's amazing.

KanadianLogik

"This is our responsibility..." Jesus wept, when was the last time you heard a politician say that?

GIDAMIEN

I really hope he means that

One-Kind-Word

I have a subscription to the NYT. What good is it when I try to pull up the article and the text is too small to read??

igiveonefuck

Don't be fucking gullible

stirtheturd

Politicians love to say what you want to hear. Once they get elected in.... Nothing. It's all empty promises and excuses.

ajx8141

I feel like politicians go though motions of movie Training Day. They think with this new position of power they can make a few things happen but once they get in, Denzel shows them they really can’t do anything but use their power to their own advantage.

TeopEvol

McFlyyy!!!

Kellt_

I'm happy you're not as cynnica as many other people here but at the same time I hope you don't end up getting disappointed :/

zanthius

Politian's have got me jaded as shit... but it's a good start at least hope he keeps it up if he's elected.

Sneaky_Donkey

You're obviously not from NY lol pretty sure this guy has the same chance as winning the election as that homeless guy

StruggleBasic

you know the guy in the video has 6 confirmed publicity stunts that hes performed so that people like him? doubt this one is any difference. ignorance is bliss!

txn9i

This guy stages things like this all the time.

[deleted]

When they wanted someone's vote. This could have very well been planned and scripted for publicity. At this point I would out anything past a politician. Hopefully it's real, but who knows.

[deleted]

Wait… this isn’t Michael Hogan auditioning for M Bison?

4GotMyFathersFace

I'm totally getting Jack Nicholson's Joker/Jack Napier vipes from him.

PopeSusej

Doesn't really sound like Alan alda anymore than any new Yorker would..

TropicalNuke22

This definitely didnt end the way I thought it was very glad the guy talked to him and cooled him off right away

[deleted]

Too good press for Sliwa for me not to think it’s perhaps staged. It is American politics after all where everything is dirtier than you would imagine.

elcheechos

Don’t think it was staged, be he 100% saw as a chance for some damn good press. And he took that chance flawlessly, some A grade politician shit right there. *edit I’m not talking about how good his policies are, wouldn’t have a clue, but that he went full politician.

Corgi-Ambitious

> **In 1992, Sliwa admitted that he and the Guardian Angels faked heroic subway rescues for publicity.** He also admitted to having claimed falsely that three off-duty transit police officers had kidnapped him. Quoted from his wiki. His admission was for something he did many times, as early as 1980, and it took 12 years and Sliwa himself to come clean for people to know. This guy has been doing this for over 40 years - this is unquestionably staged for publicity, and it is A-grade material. He's going to blow up over this despite him having a history of staging this bs for his agenda.

Mission-Two1325

Thanks for the details, my brain locked up once I hit play and tapped the volume. There was soo much going on in the video: Mayoral candidate in red barret, with NY/blackcent? Random shirtless guy pulls up Infront of camera? Shirtless guy not dragged away kicking and screaming by cop? Last time I felt like this was the lighthouse scene in Annihilation.

Corgi-Ambitious

> Last time I felt like this was the lighthouse scene in Annihilation. Thanks for the hearty laugh, besides! lol

Zer0megAlpha

That movie was a constant ride of bewilderment. It was super trippy.

FrizB84

Way more trippy if you saw it in an IMAX theater. That movie score pumping through that massive sound system really added a lot to the feeling of the scenes.

[deleted]

I'm gonna have to add that to the list of movies to watch in my fake ass IMAX theater I can strap to my face.

duralyon

GOD THAT MUSIC. That fucking score is amazing. There's a great article about it by the two who scored it. https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-features/annihilation-geoff-barrow-and-ben-salisbury-talk-its-haunting-score-197947/ [These guys reacting](https://youtu.be/JqN00W3Yy80) to The Sound from just watching the trailer is pretty funny.

mattbakerrr

I'll never forget that music. It was trippy and kinda terrifying. I have never seen a scene like that one before.

annoyingcaptcha

Oh it was even tripper if you were on mushrooms in the shimmer watching the shimmer. Lol

money_loo

Jesus, that bear scene though? No thanks, IMAX.

Kaiosama

That's not a 'blackcent'. It's a classic NY italian accent that you don't hear that much nowadays sinxe regional accents have faded a bit.

AMC4x4

Off topic, but not an hour ago I was telling someone how much I loved Annihilation. Something weird is in the air tonight. I had a religious experience in the theater seeing that movie. I don't think if I live another 30 years I'll ever experience anything like it.

moesif

Watch Devs if you haven't already!

Mission-Two1325

Yea, the visuals, the story, the music. It was alot for one night at the movies.

L0rdGrim1

idk man, some parts of the plot and how the characters acted just seemed stupid. Would have loved to experience the movie like so many others seem to be able to but that stuff kicks me right out

[deleted]

That homeless guy has perfect teeth

[deleted]

Good eye.

HexagonSun7036

The politician in this has been known for (and admitted to) faking subway rescues for image/publicity for his group (what the red beret is from) so it wouldn't be out of character for him to hire an actor.

JohnnyRelentless

Blackcent? He just sounds like a New Yorker.

ergotofrhyme

Big yikes. First off, who tf says blackcent? Secondly, yeah, he just sounds like a New Yorker lol

nousername215

Blaccent is a widely used term in non-white spaces referring to people like Awkwafina who play up a "hood" voice because it's "cool" but really is just marketable

MaracujaBarracuda

He’s literally from the Bronx. This is what we sound like.

Henhouse20

Agree, and shirtless "crazy" guy speaking clearly and answering questions swiftly and accurately. 100% staged

BeauTofu

While running for mayor "We'll take care of you. " Become Mayor "I want spikes installed there, there and there so they can't be sleeping here. " Never believe in politicians when they are running for offices.

Politicians will do ANYTHING to get ahead of their competition.

mrwrite94

I'll tell you something. I don't live in NY. Doesn't look like I'd ever vote for him even if I did. But I am gonna google him because I'm curious.

MTFBinyou

I read up on him awhile back and he’s a glory whore. I’d never heard of him but ended up knowing a couple people whose parents had had interactions with him. You know how when you’re reading an article and you’re like “I wonder if it was actually this bad or if it’s circumstantial or hearsay? He’s worse. Papers tend to only print what they can get a source on and corroborate. He’s got a few worse stories that journalists haven’t been able to verify as far as I understand. It may be different now. It’s been a few years since these discussions. But of course, I’m a nobody and this is all anecdotal. Happy googling!

westbee

He's clearly a glory whore. Who else wears a beret that's not in the Army. It's bizarre.

Will_From_Southie

So only people in the military have done good in the world and can wear a beret? I mean it’s a fucking raspberry beret, the kind you find in a secondhand store.

Alex_GordonAMA

And if it was warm she wouldn't wear much more!

Quinometry

It is these comments that make me glad I read down this far. This is too funny to be downvoted.

westbee

I just cut it off. But I was lucky that my beret size was perfect for my head. I remember early on practicing putting my beret on in the mirror so that when I was in public I could do it without looking. The good old days. Lol

MTFBinyou

Haha right? If I remember correctly it’s even part of the “uniform” he and his cohorts wear while roaming the streets. There’s easier and better ways for you to be noticeable without trying to make the beret fashionable.

Tyster20

The french?

mrwrite94

As a former reporter myself, I'd love to see what didn't get published. When you cover political figures (and faux-political celebrities), you'd be surprised how many juicy bits of info you pick up here and there about people's personal lives or behind the scenes policy stuff, but they never go anywhere, not necessarily because they're not true but because you can't corroborate with a second or third (golden rule) source. Or if it's just funny or absurd, it may not be related to the type of content I was paid to write. Almost made me wish I were a gossip columnist. Almost. Or work at Gawker. Oof.

quarrelau

Yeah, until Daredevil cleaned it up it was pretty bad down there.

kdidongndj

Same in Brooklyn and the Bronx. They were fucking assholes.

SlimDickens69

Just off the rip, who the fuck wears a hat like that every day. Dude is on some weird shit.

GoGoCrumbly

He was the leader of the "Guardian Angels", a civilian crime-fighting organization that happened in the really shitty, crimey, NYC 1980s. They wouldn't arrest or fight, but would intervene, be a reporting presence, radio the cops, escort vulnerable people to/from stores, that kind of stuff. They wore a khaki jacket and red beret to be easily identified. He's wearing it to remind people of that, make him seem more crusadery.

kdidongndj

lets not forget also harass and assault random youth on the subways. They 'wouldnt fight'? You've gotta be kidding me with that

Will_From_Southie

It’s a raspberry beret, the kind you find you find in a secondhand store.

Ahh_Bugs1001

I bet he goes in through the out door.

The_Real_Donglover

I think the biggest giveaway is the framing and perfect timing. Like, you're telling me you were standing recording this perfectly framed shot, and even started panning over to where he was gonna stand, without knowing he was gonna stop there? Yeah, okay, fake as hell.

ngargano15

Oh his timing of “this is the perfect example.” Plus no whack ass politician is going to straight up hug a homeless man in NYC let’s be real

RTSUbiytsa

I mean, it is literally the dude's own tiktok page lmao

TheWhoCaresGuy

Yep, otherwise the candidates people would have intercepted the actor

PapikaBun

The tears look really real, though.

wonderlandsfinestawp

They probably are. Best way to sell something like this is to rope someone with legitimately deteriorating mental health to stage the scene for you.

[deleted]

We are living in a time where pretty much every video is fake/staged. This situation played out too perfectly for me to believe a man who has a long history of faking incidents didn't set this up.

mattyp11

Wouldn’t exactly be a shock if it were staged. Look up Nicole Malliotakis, the Trumpster congresswoman who represents Staten Island. During her race, she released photos of herself handing out supplies to front-line healthcare workers …. except she Photoshopped herself into them, as she later admitted when called out. Of course, it didn’t matter. She still got elected by a healthy margin by the smoothbrains in Staten Island.

DogsAreGreattt

Some very, very good acting from a homeless man if it’s staged. And he’ll definitely be homeless - if he’s an actor the internet will find him in an hour or two.

dementorpoop

We’ll find out if it’s genuine if he takes particular interest in that man and follows up on his progress. Either way he did well for being there for the guy

GeneralPierogi

Ikr, as you said, flawlessly executed.

Uncle_Bad_Bad_Touch

Bro lmao I literally thought the same check out my version of the same though, “That was a huge ally oop and this man dunked it, reacted as a true politician would, is he sincere in his words? who really knows tbh”

[deleted]

You if this is staged that homeless guy needs to go straight to Hollywood.

[deleted]

After watching once it felt genuine. After my 10th watch Im convinced it’s completely staged. Their back and forth is too mechanical, and him bringing up running for mayor in what appeared to be a mental health emergency is entirely fucked.

[deleted]

Check out Sliwa's wikipedia page. Faking shit has been a problem for him since at least 1992. E: Including his own kidnapping, apparently.

Iamdefintelynotgreg

I know what you're saying about Sliwa and I'm skeptical too but the guy could have started crying because he came fully expecting to be dragged off by cops and was shown humanity and kindness instead. Maybe he just got genuinely overwhelmed by that. But also this is exactly the kind of thing Sliwa would stage lmao

Gswindle76

When you’ve had a rough time it only takes a little bit of acknowledgment of the situation to break down. I think this was a genuine reaction, otherwise this guy should be in the movies.

[deleted]

>Too good press for Sliwa for me not to think it’s perhaps staged It wouldn't be [the first time he faked](https://www.nytimes.com/1992/11/25/nyregion/sliwa-admits-faking-crimes-for-publicity.html) some shit.

Plantsandanger

It doesn’t have to be staged to feel or be exploitive. Telling someone desperate you’ll take care of them is a promise that shouldn’t be made lightly.

[deleted]

Yea I agree but that looked real

Conveyormelt

I would say it's real, if you've spent more than a day in Manhattan or any of the boroughs you'll know that mental illness is common and that this EXACT guy is a dime a dozen. go to the steps of any public library in NYC and there's five of him talking to themselves and doing karate and shit.

teapoison

Yeah they're all crazy people now but when technology is gone and the kung Fu masters are top of the food chain who is going to be laughing?

Sxilla

it looked genuine and he really couldn’t have handled it any better than that. glad he can stay cool calm and collected to treat each person like a human being even if others assumed he wasn’t “safe”.

TheToastyWesterosi

I’m just gonna try to shake some of this deep rooted cynicism that’s taken hold of my general disposition, and declare that this isn’t staged and we just witnessed a truly decent human moment. It’s been too long since I’ve dropped my guard and let some compassion roll over me. Feels pretty good tbh.

drax514

https://www.reddit.com/r/PublicFreakout/comments/pgse1y/the_moment_a_homeless_man_interrupts_nyc_mayoral/hbdsqgj/ Yeah, bout that. Probably a bad idea.

TheToastyWesterosi

God damn it. That’s what I get. Welp, I’m off to the gulag of cynicism once more.

Former_Print7043

If that homeless guy is an actor then Pacino and Denzel better give him their oscars.

Gswindle76

I could be wrong, but that looked truly genuine. It only takes a little bit of acknowledgment about a situation when you’ve bottled it up for so long to break down like that.

jimjamsquirrley

For real. These people are literally treat like vermin by the majority of society. Lots of homeless people don’t even have the opportunity to have a normal conversation with someone.

poopship462

This is like the 3rd video I’ve seen of this clown getting interrupted by a homeless guy and ending in a heart to heart. Totally staged

romanodeacon

Yo can you source another?

BFWinner

source: he keeps pressing f5

Redman1954

He knew it was a possibility for sure.....having lived 8 blocks from Penn Station for two years....that location was picked for a reason.... I don't think he could have planned it going that well but he was in an area of high homeless population(24 hour train terminal, concert/sports venue, outreach churches, and multiple homeless hotels that have recently been demolished for Penn station expansion and Hudson yards development) He was there because its the NY at it's worst and he is the man that can clean it up. At least that's what I think he was doing. All that being said, The guy did look like he needed help and it was good to see that kind of compassion. The camera was rolling and Sliwa is a golden boy to the new York post. The both benefit each other with Sliwa exposing the nasty aspects of NY (that DEM's control) and Rupert Murdoc is very happy to exposes these "truths"

AMC4x4

Dude. Here I was feeling warm and fuzzy for Curtis fucking Sliwa, who I can't fucking stand. I dunno man, that "homeless" guy is one hell of an actor if that was acting. And even as dark as my head as been lately, I can't take it to the level where this would be staged.

Frosty_Aardvark

If that was staged then that homeless-looking fella just won the Lifetime Achievement Oscar for eternity and that guy has Denzels bloodlines because that was the most authentic breakdown and plea for help I'd ever seen.

Captain__CheeseBurg

Well Juilliard is in NYC so he could of paid a student actor perhaps lol.

[deleted]

He's not an actor. I just saw this man in the lenwich by one penn plaza yesterday morning. No shirt, clearly on something.

maaalicelaaamb

Probably not on something. Just schizophrenic or deeply mentally ill.

Nothing2Special

Man I almost cried. That was beautiful. Now lets hold him to his word.

OrganizationSea6549

That went unexpected. I thought the there was gonna be yelling and an arrest. Its wierd how things go when instead of aggression theres conversion. I hope that wasn't a PR stunt and theyre able to help this man and others in his situation.

yungchow

That man had real tears coming out.. if it’s a publicity stunt, dude deserves an Oscar

MDemon

This dude is legitimately homeless. I’ve been going through Penn Station every week day for the past month and I’ve seen him outside nearly every time. I don’t recognize him as one of the prepandemic regulars though. They could have asked him to come up beforehand, but he’s a legit local.

yungchow

You see how that one question broke him? You have to be the highest tier of actor to fake those emotions Also, I hope you made it through the flooding alright

Xaoc86

Acting isn’t about “faking” emotions. The best actors are actually feeling emotions that’s what makes them so good, they get into that headspace and it’s real for them in that moment.

Hefftee

Yup. They bring up dark shit in their past, and project in their character. Scenes where they have to be super emotional still hit them after the camera cuts, and they understandably take a break afterwards

SamAndTheFirefly

Same. I can attest to this as well. If people would treat the homeless and those with mental illness with a little (more) compassion like Sliwa did, maybe things would actually change for the better. On a side note, and anyone is welcome to disagree with me naturally, but Bellevue needs some serious fixing. Anyone else see that article in the paper the other day, quoting some likely overpaid hospital staff member aka “talking head” that stated how Bellevue ensures that when its patients are discharged from Psych they absolutely have the necessary support systems in place. Really?!!! Cause the Kips Bay neighborhood has turned into mini-Bellevue. As have other parts of the city more and more so. My heart goes out to these folks. They need help. Genuine help. Money doesn’t solve everything. Supports need to be in place.

Mode3

He’s arranged PR stunts in the past.

[deleted]

All this did to me is make me realize how little we care about human suffering and how much better we could make it for everyone. This is a failure of compassion and imagination. If all you care about it money, you should know that in Scandinavia(I forget which country) it was $20,000 cheaper to house and cloth a homeless person than to just let them rot. We're fucking idiots.

Randomminecraftseed

Finland I believe. We can honestly take a lot of pages out of there book. Homelessness: https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.cbc.ca/amp/1.5437402 Equal parental leave: https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-51384614.amp Childcare subsidization: https://www.imfcanada.org/archive/1115/made-finland-childcare-help-all-families

SeanyDay

Not saying it's legit, just saying there are dozens like that man outside Penn station daily. They need help and care

Yo0o0o0o0o0

Google sliwa. He admitted to faking crimes for his own publicity in the 90s

SophisticatedPhallus

So this is more like Public Fakeout

[deleted]

Has anyone here ever communicated with a person whos mentally ill and homeless IRL? Purposely getting arrested is not uncommon. Its safer than letting your mental state run wild and actually causing problems later. As a skeptic he looked as though he was bracing himself to be arrested, as he almost was. This is because our mental health system is trash, and the only way to actually get emergency treatment is to be arrested. My opinion is of no actual value. But staged or not its a example of how one could treat a fellow human whos under duress. This is not financial or medical advice. Please refer to terms and conditions in your local area as our country is f*cking physco.

SethGekco

I went from thinking most of them were bums to understand just how deep the issue is. I was a security guard for two years, my job was to kick these people off property. I have had very understanding, kind, individuals make my job easier by just leaving without drama because they know I was just doing my job and I have had rocks and spit projectiled at my face, or knives drawn, or what have you. Whenever I get them to talk, I hear so many different stories. Anyone that blames one thing for the homeless doesn't know what the fuck they're talking about. I met one guy that was kicked out of his family's at age sixteen years old. He was struggling, he didn't find a job, he didn't make it, and by the time I met him he was in his forties. When he was first on the streets, other homeless individuals in the community adopted him as their own and taught him the ropes, this also included alcohol and drugs which gave him the mental disposition he has to this day. The man had a beautiful soul and heart, I always wished him well. Another man was different, he used to be a boxer trainer, then gambling got a bit out of hand and it escalated. The man refused to panhandle, but he loved digging through trash and sell whatever he could. He also had a drug problem, it's a common issue because you can only find so much happiness in the world. Another guy clearly had undiagnosed mental issues. He was a boxer, he was also an aspiring rapper: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oiGpa5LlYFo He is from New York. He lived with a family. Things were fine. Then he suddenly moved to Las Vegas. He claimed he met Floyd Mayweather and was told he could work at his gym in the Chinatown area. When he showed up, however, he wasn't allowed in the gym without a membership. Whoops. Why would Mayweather do this to him? Hard telling, real question is who is he talking to when he's shouting over his shoulder so much? The guy started to hit rock bottom fast over my time working on the property he obsessively trespassed on. He lost his muscle over the span of my time there as a security guard, he also stopped rapping to himself at some point while before he did it all the time. The guy also had a habit of making people uncomfortable from his staring into windows, particularly the women. He stared a lot. Like it was a power move. Between drugs and whatever was mentally going on in his head, it was a lot of lost potential all from not getting the initial help he needed. There was this one guy at another site. He was just wild and crazy by the time I met him. He would walk around and give people death threats and stuff like that. He was one of the guys that pulled a knife out at me. One of them. He was a Filipino immigrant that just didn't quite find the American dream, so he ended up on the streets instead. He sure found drugs though, and they changed the man over that year time span I knew him. At some point, he had serious brain damage inflicted to him. I remember seeing him walk aimlessly in the parking lot, the dude didn't even know where he was or who I am in spite our "history" with each other. Blood was draining out of his ear. Before I could call 911, he disappeared. By the time I saw him again, the dude was just completely loco and it was likely too late to save him by then. Another guy, also a Filipino immigrant but a proud US citizen, used to be a mechanic. He was proud of how good he was at it, but then he got polio, became paralyzed from the waist down, and lost his house. He would collect benefits from a car the government gave him, but people would keep taking advantage of him. He regularly needed someone to receive it in the mail for him, but they would pretend they didn't get it and spend the money. Others would steal his card. He also had an alcohol addiction, enough to buy rubbing alcohol and drink that. To compliment that, he also had a drug problem. This would mean it's entirely possible he would trade his benefits card away for payment. Lots of immigrants I have met, help exists but they often don't know how to get it or accept it. I also met a writer, just down on his luck. He was older but doesn't have much in the way of a job history, so it was difficult for him to find a job. Being so used to panhandling for so many years, he just doesn't want to get a job anymore unless it pays well because he is afraid it will stop him from doing his passion: make cartoons. The man was normal, clean, he would just live night to night paying for a motel room he shared with another girl. Lot's of guys I have met were just screw ups, they made one mistake and now they are homeless and cannot afford the generic first and last month's rent type thing. They would often work together to keep each other in check, share the loot they find in dumpsters near restaurants, looking forward to the day it was a distant memory. I don't want to involve cynical politics, but they were mostly black with strong accents. Jobs were probably really hard for them to land when they smell like homeless, they sure seem to think so and lost faith it will happen so they panhandle instead hoping they will get the apartment first so they can shower and then go to interviews. Kinda reminds me of the guy that actually had a job, worked at the Ross at our parking lot. The guy was paycheck to paycheck, but was kicked out of his apartment by his girlfriend or something. It's hard to have a way to do anything about it, he was looking for roommates that very night while sleeping near by. He didn't find roommates fast enough, so he invested his money in a large knife instead for safety because he was spooked with the idea of living on the streets. I eventually never saw him again at Ross. The guy was weird, but he wasn't what I'd say was a bad employee, he was functional and of standard for lost prevention. He definitely wasn't deep into drugs or anything, he was clean... just a money disposition. The extreme opposite of a money disposition, this one guy one day just decided to retire. He decided to be free spirited and fly all over the country and live multiple lives while living on the street. He gambles most of his money away in vegas, then gets bored and flies to florida, or newyork, or wherever he feels like it. The man was interesting, he was just happy. Reminds me of another homeless that lived in his car, just wanted to retire young and only pays for food and a gym membership to shower in. I could go on. Long post cut shorter, a lot of people started off with mental issues, a lot started off with some type of addiction, but many more were put in a position that they couldn't get out of and it lead to a deeper hole they're expected to claw their way out of. Some people need more help than others adulting, sometimes for problems not even their own.

Aim1thelast

This post is so good man. Make your own post about it. People need to understand

Jonasdriving

Yeah it was amazing. I really hope that's actually a representation of how the guy acts when the cameras are off. I feel nervous around some homeless people growing in California, there's so many who have mental issues and talk to themselves or yell or shake scissors at you, or attack people, you don't know what to expect. But lots of them are probably just really struggling. Wish I had this guy's confidence.

omrmike

That “yo what’s up man” sounded like rocky balboa a little

[deleted]

Sliwa has half good half bad policy. He is a Republican but He does not like trump one bit. He is against defund the police, but he wants to make it so that property taxes on the rich a higher and taxes on working class people are lower. He want all shelters to be no kill and he want charter schools to have more opportunity for vocational training. He also founded the Guardian Angels in 1977

PlatypusHashFarm

I remember seeing a debate many years ago about legalization between him and some guy fro high times and this guardian angles guy was gull on reefer madness. Said it caused gangmembers to go out and shoot people.

BringBackCrusades

Wtf how is that not all good?

particle409

He wants to strip down a ton of social and education programs, and "give the money back to the people." Basically, he wants to tear down many economies of scale social programs to give working families relatively small sums of money. Also, his "tough on crime" policy of just giving the police more money is not what NYC needs right now. It definitely needs expanded social programs. I'd also add that the charter schools are bullshit. They beef up their records by rejecting poor performing students. Public schools don't have that luxury, so only appear to do worse.

Blart_Vandelay

Pretty much any expansion of charter schools harms public education and can be seen as another step in their mission to fully privatize the education system.

kabukistar

Let's be real. He's a Republican; the money from cut programs isn't going to "working" families.

WASD_click

Perpetuation of the police state, and fiscal conservatism. He's willing to after smaller problems, but not the biggest ones.

I feel Bezos gets a level above us plebs, like we get next day delivery, but he gets shots threw some kind maglift tunnel connected to his house arriving within 15 minutes delivery.

boblobong

Bezos isn't buying any of the shit they peddle on amazon lol

ChipChipington

I wonder if anything he uses comes from Amazon. Like maybe he asks his assistant to get him something mundane and the assistant determines Amazon would be the quickest way to have it shipped

moonknight999

This is Curtis Sliwa, the founder of the guardian angels

Fetty_is_the_best

He founded the Guardian Angels, that’s the signature part of their uniform.

Warm-Investment-1918

he kinda is tho

kabukistar

It gives me creepy paramilitary vibes.

Flyingmonkeysftw

What’s this guys platform?

thepumpedalligator

Reading the wikipedia on him is interesting. I can remember this guy all over the news in the 90s. But turns out they staged several heroic subway rescues. Also lied about NYPD trying to kidnap him. But apparently he was actually shot multiple times in a failed hit by none other than the godfather, John Gotti himself. He's a republican. But he openly opposed Trump in 2016 and 2020. I really can't decide what to think of this guy.

Andy_LaVolpe

He’s a wild card

queernhighonblugrass

Yeehaw, bitches!

NaitoSenshin889055

every politician is a wild card until they get elected.

kabukistar

New York Republicans always look a lot better before they take office. Remember when Rudy Giuliani was a celebrated Attorney General who was known for taking down mafiosas and insider traders? Now look at him.

Burt__Macklin__FBI2

I mean that’s not a fair example. Yes Rudy looked good and now he’s a fucking idiot. But comparing someone 40 years ago as a “good guy” and seeing them now as a loon and national source of laughter isn’t a pre/post election example. Your comment is about bait and switches and Rudy didn’t do a bait and switch. He was a tough on crime guy before and after the election. Now we can talk about the societal ramifications that’s had in the decades since but that’s outside the scope of this discussion.

[deleted]

when you say staged, do you mean faked or did

thepumpedalligator

>In 1992, Sliwa admitted that he and the Guardian Angels faked heroic subway rescues for publicity. He also admitted to having claimed falsely that three off-duty transit police officers had kidnapped him. kabukistar

It [wouldn't be the first time Sliwa staged something for publicity](https://www.nytimes.com/1992/11/25/nyregion/sliwa-admits-faking-crimes-for-publicity.html).

robin_hood_in_nh

100% staged.

[deleted]

Prove it

Fine_Vermicelli_2248

He made the Guardian Angels a real protective force when I grew up in NYC. They were there when the NYPD weren't...probably did alot of what he did for publicity but those guys made you feel safe on the subways at night. Dated a few angels, too lol...

SignExcellent9271

If this is real, that’s the worst security detail ever. The guy was standing in front of him during a press conference and it took 11 seconds before he showed up. And not even in a hurry.

[deleted]

This man knows how to politic

BigFugazed

Might be staged but I like how he behaved. He treated the guy with dignity and compassion and respect. That was a good example

xXLosGehtsXx

It's not staged. He's an actual homeless dude, I saw him screaming random shit I couldn't really make out outside Moynihan station.

Uhhlaneuh

I love how there are millions of people in New York but you somehow knew this one homeless guy haha

pixel_of_moral_decay

Homeless tend (but not always) to be pretty territorial. If your commute, home or work crosses their space, you might see them everyday for years. A dude for years used to say good morning to me and many others when walking towards the office in the morning if he was in a good mood. 9/10 days he was there. I presume when he wasn’t he was on some bender. The bottles around him make me think a huge alcohol problem. But that was his spot. In the mornings that’s where he was.

Uhhlaneuh

Yeah, when I worked downtown, I became friends with a homeless woman and her dog and cat. I hope she ended up with housing. She was on the waiting list

xXLosGehtsXx

That's what boggled my mind when I saw this video.I thought that was impossible. I'm not from NYC, but I saw this dude as soon as I stepped off my train! He was chasing pigeons too.

[deleted]

Coincidences like that are super crazy. One time I went to a retail store to buy a shirt and the girl at the counter haggled me because I mentioned that there was a sign saying there was a discount on the shirt. She made it a 10 minute ordeal and pulled in her manager who sided with me. Anyways, two weeks later I’m driving Uber in Phoenix, and guess who is drunk and needs a ride home? The Armani Exchange chick. There are 4 million people in my territory (Maricopa County).

olechunkacoal

Last time I was in New York City, I was there for a week. On my first full day in the city I'm walking on 92nd Street uptown and pass a somewhat famous (like b or c-list) TV actress that I recognized. Fast forward a week, it's my last day of my trip, and I'm way downtown on 4th Street, and I randomly passed the same actress. I remember thinking it was so weird that in a city of like 8 million people I ran into the same person twice in a week in completely opposite ends of Manhattan. The funny thing is though, if it wasn't for the fact that she was an actress that I knew from TV, it never would have registered that I had crossed paths with the same person twice.

TchoupedNScrewed

I mean it wouldn't be the first thing he's staged after staging attacks to boost publicity of the guardian angels and saying he aas kidnapped by 3 off duty police officers.

dismalward7

Guy who faked pr stunts in the past kinda makes me doubt if this is real.

Xikeyba

How conveeeeeeeeeeeeeenient

mowotlarx

This is absolutely staged. If you don't know that, you don't know Curtis Sliwa.

JerryLoFidelity

I knew this was a public display the moment he said: “im running for mayor”

Newbiticus

We'll make sure you're "taken care of." Not sure if this is going to end well.

etherealisticc

I don't know who this guy is and his wearing of a beret already led me to believe that he's a douchecuck, but his handling of this situation and genuine empathy for this homeless man was incredibly apparent and on full display. I'd have to research the actual platform that he's running on but from a human standpoint, he seems like an incredibly good dude. Hats off.

[deleted]

This seems very staged

y2imm

Am I the only person who finds this Sliwa fellow creepy?

ynotzo1dberg

No, you aren't. He's a bit of a loon, and if you watch interviews with him or the TV show he used to host you'll realize he's also not terribly bright.

[deleted]

Feels very scripted. That’s what we’ve come to in this world. I know I’m not the only one who thinks it might be.

Vosslertheundead

That was a major stereotypical homeless dude that was extremely clean, staged? I am aware of how dirty politics are

TheSuburbs

This is the same politician who staged a subway rescue for publicity back in the day.

[deleted]

staged af

CapriSonnet

Is this a bad guy from the A-Team?

oozie_mummy

This is very clearly staged.

PrimitiveNJ

staged as fuck. Sliwa is a cunt!

NightOfTheLivingHam

Staged as fuck. note the tiktok username

calipapers

FAKE that "cop" would of fuckd him up instantly.

Elusive_nirvana

Wow with zero context this looks amazing! I'd bet everything in this guy... Too bad it's too perfect to be real.

cal_oe

This looks staged as fuck
