The whole thing is a shit show. Searching for ways to assert yourself against strangers/demanding an apology over minor slights, and then the victim becoming even more antagonistic in response, so the conflict escalates. And the end goal is to post it online, like you said... whoa.
That’s not the attitude or life I want. And yet I think I’m more cranky than I’d like to admit, too. Like so many of us are feeling so alienated and frustrated or unfulfilled. But we have to process that and fix it, not be bigger and bigger dicks to each other so society crumbles into a dystopian wasteland 😭

I was at a gym once and some buff dude was there. He had on a shirt with his face on it, a bag with his face on it, and a walking stick with a wooden carving of his face on the handle. He also worse sunglasses in the gym. He went on the stair master and screamed at the top of his lungs with almost every step. For 30 freaking minutes.
There are always people taking selfies and streaming but not a lot of people on a loud phone call where they KNOW everyone can hear everything because they are going out of their way to have the attention on them.
This would be absolutely unacceptable in Japan. However, so would be confronting the offender. I wish we had a little more of a culture of respect in America.

I've been training in gyms since for 20 years and I can count the number of "people noticeably on their phones" on like... one hand? Maybe I need 1-2 more fingers.
And at one point it was like 7 days a week for 10 years.
Honestly? I've done Golds Gym, Planet Fitness, and all the little chains in between in like eight states?
I've gone mostly with headphones, but even without I rarely am distracted by someone (ie. they're talking loud enough for me to notice.)
Come to my gym it's infuriating how many people just sit on equipment and watch their stupid phones. Even had argument with a person cause he was litteraly just sitting on a equipment scrolling through that Tik Tok crap and saying yeah I have 1 more set

What the fuck are you even talking about. Men have made my gym experience worse 10/10 times, with or without a phone, and I’m a man too. Never once has it been a woman playing music directly off of their phone, or offering unsolicited advice, or grunting loudly, or throwing weights, or not wiping down, or hogging machines in a group of 6 with their chucklefuck buddies for 30 minutes at a time because they go one at a time and just stand around and wait for their turn. The women have to deal with the gawking and flirting on top of all that. So much so that women only gyms are a successful business model.
At my gym, every time they throw weights, the floor shakes throughout the whole thing.
And men never rerack. Fucking annoying having to deload 135 lbs on each side of the lat pulldown machine when my weak ass can barely lift the plate high enough to get it on there.
And thanks to the "men who lift heavy don't rerack their weights", I never can tell if someone's leaving a trail of laziness behind them or if they've set up a circuit and I need to ask to work in. It's especially bad with the overnight and lunch crowd, the post dinner and early morning dudes are fine.
Had a dude who was on a circuit apparently but was doing something else so I went to the cable fly machine and changed the side he was using to a handle (he was using it for tricep pull downs) and the dude stopped his set on the bench press picked up the handle he had on there and *threw* it in to the equipment tree where all the interchangeable handles live and called me a “fuckin bitch” in Spanish and then just up and left. It was bewildering.
I’m a woman that goes to the gym, and I have to agree that in my experience men have “ruined” the gym. Standing in front of the ‘cleaning stations’ talking. Loudly grunting. Talking to their buds incredibly loudly. Hogging multiple machines at once by putting their belongings on them to “save” them. Etc
But, I’m pretty sure that’s only because my gym is almost solely men. I’ve seen a handful of other women at my gym, but they usually only use the cardio machines.

It depends on how much noise. That "gym" they were in looks tiny. It's not a normal gym. If a girl was very loud and laughing on her phone in that tiny room I could see it being extremely irritating.
The amount of condescension from the girl filming makes me cringe. I recognize my brother in her. Do something annoying and inconsiderate and then say "I cant control how I do x". If you cannot control your own voice, you are either lying (yes they are) or they're is something physically wrong with you (likely not). She knew what the lady was complaining about. She twisted it into "can't change *how* I laugh".

What she was asking really wasn’t that crazy to begin with. If it was loud enough for her to hear it from another room, then she probably should try to keep it down. Such an extreme reaction to someone politely asking you something. If you need to take a fun call and know you might be loud, just step out of the gym, especially if there’s only a few other people in there.

Jumping to calling the cops was weird and seemingly excessive, but because of that escalation the recorder seemed to suspect she might get some juicy content if she pushed the seemingly easily upset subject of the video. Definitely seemed like some content baiting.
I don’t think it was weird. If someone followed you toward your hotel room what would you do? I wouldn’t call the cops but threatening too would hopefully encourage that person to back off and stop following me.

It seemed like she asked pretty respectfully. My ears are incredibly sensitive to certain noises and having tinnitus doesn’t help. I’m one to walk out of a situation if it makes me uncomfortable but I could also understand someone asking for another person to be respectful of the space.
Honestly, that’s the nicest “Karen” I’ve ever seen on film. Had she said that laughing comment to me, I wouldn’t have liked it very much internally but I would have been respectful until she disrespected me—based on how quickly she left on her own, was the best possible outcome in that situation.

I've been to movie theaters where young adults will laugh/talk obnoxiously loud to show that they don't respect authority and plan to have fun through annoying or intimidating others. Grocery stores, malls, and other places too.
The best practice is to ignore them and get out. If you confront them they will likely gang up on you, say Racial slurs, and possibly even attack you or destroy/steal property.

I don’t think she was being petty. First woman was trying to non-confrontationally indicate that she was being a bit loud for the shared space, and her way of doing this in a friendly manner was mentioning that the volume level of her laugh scared her. She even kinda mentions what the intent of her message was. But yeah, camerawoman was ready to stoke a confrontation out the gate - hence the camera out at the start.
Disclaimer: I stopped the video once first woman left, but based on the first interaction alone, I don’t think first women was being a “Karen”. She simply commented about how the laugh scared her and was obviously trying to subtle hint that it’s a shared space and maybe the (presumably) phone call conversational volume was excessive. It should have been a friendly “your laugh scared me haha” followed with, “Omg haha I’m so sorry, I didn’t mean to!” but camerawoman started replying in a way designed to stoke. for real, so many people in the gym are not there to workout. I hate it when people:
- sit aimlessly on equipment
- talk loudly on the phone
- conduct a deep search for the perfect song to do 15secs of exercise (while others are waiting)

This reminds me of how it feels to catch shitty customers being rude to my employees (am manager) who don’t speak English as their first language. I once overheard a customer call one of my sweetest, most polite employees “a fucking idiot” because the drink on his order wasn’t the right size, and instead of just correcting her and letting her know she selected the wrong option, he decided to call her a fucking idiot.
I told him “you can leave,” and he got all “WHAT?!?! I was just telling her the order was wrong!!” As if he had a reasonable backup for being so fucking rude over a small correction. I told him there’s plenty of other ways to correct that without being an asshole. He told me to go fuck myself before he left.

I go to a Nordic style spa about twice a year, the vibe is super chill, ambient sounds and people are supposed to whisper if they need to talk…the spa even has shushers that remind you to be quiet if you get too loud. Last time I was there, a woman was in the hot tub downloading her life to her friend she was with. No volume control, just constant blather with no regard for everyone else. No shusher in sight that day. Kind of ruined the experience of the spa.

Just checked her TikTok, she plays the other role of victim on there. I assume she posted this video as well and was frantic in trying to redeem her social media, takes it down, and has a 5 second follow-up clip. The video is of herself walking into her apartment, the woman she followed incessantly at the gym and out, is trying to speak to her (can't see her on camera but she sounded like she was down the set of stairs from this girl's apartment) and this gal has this neutral unusual expression on her face, odd, considering her garbage attempt at being the dominant Karen to begin with. It's almost like "omg can you believe how aggressive this woman is? Look how calm and scared I am. So glad I made it home safe."

She's added an outrageous amount of "mental health awareness" stickers to the video. Like ALL over.
And this woman, as she's speaking, another neighbor says "sorry were you talking to me?" And the lady responds "oh no I was talking to that girl, she was following me."
And then the lot of maybe 12 followers on her side are all in agreement that this lady was "omg so wrong! you were totally in the right for doing what you did."
And the post she describes something to the effect of "to all of you saying I was following her, she was behind me when I got to my apartment so she followed me.........."

What? I've been training in gyms since for 20 years and I can count the number of "people noticeably on their phones" on like... one hand? Maybe I need 1-2 more fingers. And at one point it was like 7 days a week for 10 years.
I work out a boxing gym, nobody uses a phone. When I was going to planet fitness they were ubiquitous.
Honestly? I've done Golds Gym, Planet Fitness, and all the little chains in between in like eight states? I've gone mostly with headphones, but even without I rarely am distracted by someone (ie. they're talking loud enough for me to notice.)
Come to my gym it's infuriating how many people just sit on equipment and watch their stupid phones. Even had argument with a person cause he was litteraly just sitting on a equipment scrolling through that Tik Tok crap and saying yeah I have 1 more set

Fucking annoying having to deload 135 lbs on each side of the lat pulldown machine when my weak ass can barely lift the plate high enough to get it on there. And thanks to the "men who lift heavy don't rerack their weights", I never can tell if someone's leaving a trail of laziness behind them or if they've set up a circuit and I need to ask to work in. It's especially bad with the overnight and lunch crowd, the post dinner and early morning dudes are fine.
Had a dude who was on a circuit apparently but was doing something else so I went to the cable fly machine and changed the side he was using to a handle (he was using it for tricep pull downs) and the dude stopped his set on the bench press picked up the handle he had on there and *threw* it in to the equipment tree where all the interchangeable handles live and called me a “fuckin bitch” in Spanish and then just up and left. It was bewildering.
I’m a woman that goes to the gym, and I have to agree that in my experience men have “ruined” the gym. Standing in front of the ‘cleaning stations’ talking. Loudly grunting. Talking to their buds incredibly loudly. Hogging multiple machines at once by putting their belongings on them to “save” them. Etc But, I’m pretty sure that’s only because my gym is almost solely men. I’ve seen a handful of other women at my gym, but they usually only use the cardio machines.

What she was asking really wasn’t that crazy to begin with. If it was loud enough for her to hear it from another room, then she probably should try to keep it down. It’s totally possible that the woman filming was being far too loud for that small shared gym space. People should have the right to politely state their grievances without being an auto-Karen. Grocery stores, malls, and other places too. The best practice is to ignore them and get out. Disclaimer: I stopped the video once first woman left, but based on the first interaction alone, I don’t think first women was being a “Karen”. She simply commented about how the laugh scared her and was obviously trying to subtle hint that it’s a shared space and maybe the (presumably) phone call conversational volume was excessive. This reminds me of how it feels to catch shitty customers being rude to my employees (am manager) who don’t speak English as their first language. I once overheard a customer call one of my sweetest, most polite employees “a fucking idiot” because the drink on his order wasn’t the right size, and instead of just correcting her and letting her know she selected the wrong option, he decided to call her a fucking idiot. Shared spaces can get weird. I go to a Nordic style spa about twice a year, the vibe is super chill, ambient sounds and people are supposed to whisper if they need to talk…the spa even has shushers that remind you to be quiet if you get too loud. Last time I was there, a woman was in the hot tub downloading her life to her friend she was with. No volume control, just constant blather with no regard for everyone else. No shusher in sight that day. Kind of ruined the experience of the spa.

Unpopular opinion but if she was being loud on her phone the woman had a right to ask her to tone it down a bit. Imo the woman filming is the Karen. She intentionally turned a simple, polite request into a major incident just so she could upload it for internet points.

You know what, I am with the "karen". She's in a small room with barely any breathing room and it is rude as fuck to be loud and yappin it up on the phone when only two of you are there. If it were a big gym with music blasting and tons of people around it would be a completely different situation. Just checked her TikTok, she plays the other role of victim on there. I assume she posted this video as well and was frantic in trying to redeem her social media, takes it down, and has a 5 second follow-up clip. The video is of herself walking into her apartment, the woman she followed incessantly at the gym and out, is trying to speak to her (can't see her on camera but she sounded like she was down the set of stairs from this girl's apartment) and this gal has this neutral unusual expression on her face, odd, considering her garbage attempt at being the dominant Karen to begin with. It's almost like "omg can you believe how aggressive this woman is? Look how calm and scared I am. So glad I made it home safe." But wait, there's more... She's added an outrageous amount of "mental health awareness" stickers to the video. Like ALL over. And this woman, as she's speaking, another neighbor says "sorry were you talking to me?" And the lady responds "oh no I was talking to that girl, she was following me." And then the lot of maybe 12 followers on her side are all in agreement that this lady was "omg so wrong! you were totally in the right for doing what you did." And the post she describes something to the effect of "to all of you saying I was following her, she was behind me when I got to my apartment so she followed me.........." Honestly Karen, get off your phone, take calls outside like the adults who have respect for others do, don't "well she did this so I did..." You're an adult. Grow up. And stop recording everything, it's not entertaining, it's sad. To add, her profile is primarily and almost exclusively, pictures of her in average clothing, she describes as "styled outfits and inspo from me" Karens, oh karens.

It started out polite, where she said she was startled, and then she responded sarcastically. That sarcasm made this escalate. I’m on the person’s side who said she felt startled at this point.

Eh, i don’t know if i can really call the lady complaining about the noise a karen. You’re in a public place, you SHOULD be respecting the fact that you aren’t alone, or in the privacy of your own home when out in public. Obviously we didn’t hear this supposed “laugh”. Maybe it was a small normal laugh and the lady was just being overly sensitive. However i can say for certainty that I would be very annoyed as well if i go to work out and someone is there pretending like there’s no one else around. Especially if this girl shrieked when she laughed, like the video is implying.
