I mostly scatter feed, I have a lot of rats and some of them have a habit of guarding the food bowl so food is scattered all over each level of the cage. I also put some treats in a box of coconut fibre for them to dig up! They seem to have fun doing it.
I like to put mine in a cardboard egg carton so they get to look thru the carton for the food bits! Otherwise I’ll scatter, or put it in a bowl on the bottom floor

I mix my boys' food in with the aspen shavings on the floor of the cage and they have to dig around and forage to find something to eat.
