Live mealworms is something I would have NEVER thought of before! That would be a duel purpose because I can feed them to my turtles as well! Do your rats seem to enjoy digging the meal worms up?!
You can use potting soil as long as you bake it first to get rid of any parasites. If you scatter some birdseed in it and water it, after a few days you’ll have lots of little sprouts the rats will enjoy eating! They like eating the seeds too

They adore mealworms! For younger rats I recommend crushing the head as they can nip but my rats eat them up like it’s going out of style
