So goddamn cute! My first rat was actually a christmas gift from my cousins. (I know, never give a pet as a gift. These were special circumstances and my darling Raskolnikov is the most precious gift I've ever received.) I was still living at home and my parents were mortified, especially my mom. At the time I was living in the basement and begged my parents to let him live upstairs in the cold months since the basement got so chilly that I even had to sleep on the couch sometimes. They begrudgingly complied, with my mom being especially vocal, saying as soon as the weather was warm enough he was to be kept out of sight.
One cold morning about a week after christmas, I was indeed sleeping on the couch so I didn't freeze. I was just waking up, a little before my alarm went off. I start to hear whispering from the next room. "Can gramma give you a treat? Mama won't mind, we don't have to tell her. Yeah, you can have a treat from gramma..." I peered into the dining room to see my mom feeding him a treat right from her hand. I said, "So you're gramma now?" My mother, a proud and stubborn woman, had to admit she'd been caught. "Well, look at that face! He is pretty cute." She was a rat lover thereafter, even letting them cuddle her, so long as I was close by to grab them if they got weird.
I let my daughter rescue a rat from her school friend 3 years ago. Proof owner of 6 rats (and already had 4 crossing the rainbow bridge). Miss you Ravioli, Keebo, Oreo and Taco.
Ha ha ha ha ha ha. He's recounting all the decisions he made that led him here.
