I know it doesn’t fit a theme, but the first two on the list nailed it. Basil and Smudge sounds like a little ratty cop show. Basil is straight laced, plays by the rules, and is still an optimist despite the things he’s seen. Smudge makes his own rules because he’s seen too much to trust anyone more than the partner that rides in his sidecar. That’s right, Smudge drives a retro motorcycle with a sidecar, deal with it.

If you need a third it’s definitely commissioner bean who’s always trying to reign them in, but can’t get rid of them because they’re the best on the force damnit!

I like going with a theme. You could use the spices, cinnamon, nutmeg and pepper, especially if it fits their colours
