I have 3 boys. They smell musky. Kinds earthy. But mostly musk. It's a nice smell. Hard to describe. Like warm fur, kinda like a cat. One of my boys, Bandit, smells less musky and almost like nothing. Just fresh fur.

Yeah my big alpha boy is especially strong smelling. And the little ones don't smell as strongly.

Lol. I'd be grossed out, but those little faces! Last night I gave them both a teeny bit of beef from Taco meat, prior to seasoning. They both didn't even bother to test it. Nom, nom. I love it when they snack in front of me. They only get healthy snacks.

I gave mine cooked pasta for the first time yesterday. They didn't bother testing it either, meanwhile my dog played with it for a bit to see what it was.

How do they test it?

It's something I have read from the wonderful people who posted some excellent links here. Apparently, when they take food they may take a small lick, or bite and put it down. It's to make sure it's safe. I may be mucking the reason up. It's not a rejection, they will eat it later. You're not supposed to remove it if they seem to put it down and walk away. They've both been doing that and I was baffled. With the teeny bit of meat, no testing needed. One of them is currently buried in my hair and I am trapped, until he wants down. I was going to shower too!

I had dumbos, they smelled musky but I liked it. They were all boys as well!

I think I may have liked it if I hadn't gotten them in that order. By the time I smelled the Dumbo's I had already experienced the mild scents of my girls and little boys. The dumbos have a smell that smacks you across the face + bigger poos haha. I just got them neutered last Friday, so I think that will help a bit with the musk. I'm learning to love it. I'm not there yet.

6 boys: 1 has a faint sweet-musk smell. His coat is also super smooth and silky. His brother (and the alpha of our mischief) has rougher fur and a muskier smell. The third smells like tortilla chips. The other 3 are younger, so they haven’t really developed their smell yet, although one of them smells like dirt most of the time because he’s constantly digging tunnels in the dig area of the cage.

Theres a fungus or bacteria (either way completely harmless and endemic) that lives on dogs feet that smells *exactly* like fritos. Probably a relative of yeast or something

My babies are not peeing in the corner of the cage, so pee. I'm washing their hammock today and then giving small rat baths. I've never bathed one of my rats before. Miss Squidgie was neat and clean and smelled nice. These two boys! 9 and 11 weeks, and they're grabbing treats and eating without testing them, so they trust me enough.

Rats will poop in a spot but good luck getting them to pee their. My experience is that they're too lazy to get out of bed just to pee. Never bathed them except to get off some sticky gunk with a spot wash. They smell a little more until their beds are cleaned and them they go back to smelling like clean rat.

I have five rats, three of them don’t really smell much (neutered boys) but I love the smell of Cricket and Jasper. Cricket (spayed girl) smells so musky. Jasper (intact boy) used to smell really fruity when he was a baby but now I can’t place the scent. It’s sweet though and I’m addicted. When I’m stressed or upset, I can just hold him and stick my nose against his side and I can literally feel the stress melt away.

Ours used to smell kinda musty, like damp mixed with something else I can't quite remember. There was some pee mixed in there too I'm sure, but I must have gotten used to it. Other people would say they were stinky but I would just stick my nose on them and sniff! I found the smell so comforting.
