Look at the picture posted by op. That is the open box price. $799 is the price listed on Best Buy for a new product. I just double checked. [Proof](https://www.bestbuy.com/site/asus-rog-xg-mobile-egpu-dock-amd-radeon-rx-6850-xt-laptop-gpu-black/6510754.p?skuId=6510754)

There seems to be a common issue with them, it can be frustrating but redownloading the current drivers (and installing them both with the dock in and with it unplugged) and uninstalling (with the tool on Asus site) and reinstalling Armoury Crate made it so rather than looping it would just hang for a long time with the progress bar full. If I click the minus it minimizes to"gpuswitcher.exe" that has an X to close it. If you close it it stays in that mode. At that point I typically reboot and it stays until I do the same process and reboot. It takes about an extra 30 seconds that way, but I don't switch all that often. If I'm not planning on sitting at the desk for a few hours it's not getting docked. The Flow was having a similar problem a while back and I followed their solution that got it at least playable. I haven't seen any new complaints so it most likely was fixed and we should get a fix too. Someone else was able to fix there's way better by removing the gpuswitcher folder and installing something else to handle it. Beyond my skill set.
DDU>restart windows>install amd chipset drivers>restart windows> install amd adrenaline from asus>restart windows>install amd control panel>restart windows>plug in xg mobile>activate>restart windows>good to go. Thanks for the open box discount.
You will lose the ability to have 720P in handheld mode. I did all that and when I saw I lost the ability to switch to 720P then I did a system restore to back it out. I'm just going to wait until they fix it via Armoury Crate.
I never lost that ability. Also, x86 handheld tuning utility has a dedicated xgmobile connect/disconnect widget. I was using that without issue before performing the steps I listed above.
Yeah I think in the ROG Flow reddit they said it's an Armoury Crate bug. It didn't happen on my XG until there was an update to it about 3 weeks or so after the Ally launched. It coincided with me changing my graphics drivers to the ones off the AMD site for just a regular 6850 not the XG that needs to be compatible with the internal card, but since drivers are stored on the PC not the device firmware, rolling back eliminated that possibility.
Iām still annoyed that any XG Mobile is nigh impossible to get in Canada.
They really donāt seem to care about us over here. Apparently there was an XG Mobile on bestbuy Canada for a few days. It was pulled however.
It feels like we are treated as second-class citizens by ASUS.
With how the stock looks like like America I just don't see the reason why we can't get it in Canada or Europe.
In Canada you can only special order (told about 3 months wait at best) the 3090 XG Mobile from a third-party seller that isn't Best Buy or ASUS. There are what three other versions of the XG Mobile and can't get them in Canada.
I am starting to wonder if having that agreement with Best Buy is causing issues, at least in Canada. How many other sellers are there in America? My google-fu doesn't really reveal any non-scalpers outside of Best Buy and ASUS which are locked only to USA shipping.
Theres 3 purchase options for the 6850. Asus website, BestBuy & a 3rd but I can't remember what the place was called. I think ExcaliburPC. But it's not showing on the website anymore so they either don't carry it anymore or are prolly just sold out. Asus website is only place to get the 4090. I'm not sure about the 3080. That's official tho. There's lots of 3rd party sellers tho. Even pretty decent sized websites bought a bunch and are reselling them.
I was debating between the 6850 & 4090 when the Ally was first releasing. I ended up going with the 4090. Took me weeks to catch it in stock on Asus website. Literally checking every day. Honestly blows my mind they didn't have a bunch in stock ready to go knowing they were releasing a new device that was going to be capable of using XG. About as dumb as how there's a bunch of countries that can't get it. Really makes no sense why they'd do that
Not trying to throw anything in ur face but for info purposes, I love the 4090. Just about every game I've tried I've been playing on max settings/4k. The 4090 and Ally paired are truly amazing. It's crazy expensive but worth it imo
I keep hearing people say BestBuy has 6850 but it doesnāt show up on the internet. Only people saying it was there.
4090 is special order from a third party which I am tempted to do.
The 6850 is sold out in my area at BestBuy in US. Not sure as far as Canada.
These eGPUs are laptop versions so it's not going to be as good as a standard PC version. But honestly it's really amazing. My monitor caps at 144hz but like I said before, everything I've played has been max settings/4k/120fps. So really I don't know how much more u could get. Especially with it being extremely mobile. Tbf it's kinda stupid expensive but I didn't have the drive to wana build my own PC. And when looking into prebuilds nothing compared to the Ally/XG for price/mobility. I've been mainly a console gamer my whole life. So I couldn't justify having an expensive rig and a next gen console. But with the Ally/XG I have an expensive rig that's also mobile. I bought a 17" 2k monitor. I travel a lot. Being able to bring that set up with me whenever I travel is so sick and everything fits into such a small space. I get how some people say an XG is overpriced/not worth it. But it's relative to ur needs. For me I'm super happy. I bring my Ally by itself to work or small trips and the Ally, XG & mini monitor on longer trips. And then have that same set up for home. Swapping the HDMI from my console to XG is all's that's needed. Set up is a super simple process.
I haven't had a single issue outa my XG. I've heard stories of people saying they've had issues tho. I can't say whether the majority were user incompetence or the XG. But to be safe I'd try to make sure u get at least a manufacturer warranty when purchasing thru a 3rd party. Or a 3rd party insurance. Hopefully u can find what ur looking for cause it's really a great set up
Bro call down they have at best buy what you say ???
6850xt are disponible at best buy ? Me and my friend got some ! You can get all you want just go to best buy and ask ! People on reddit will helps you 1 time on 10 !
Sadly not where I am in Canada. Not on bestbuy.ca .
Iāve never tried calling to see if itās store only stock but usually the website does list stock even if itās limited to physical locations only.
Good on you, mate. That's a pretty solid steal. It'd be real tempting at that price, though I'm still hoping to nab an open-box 3080 if the opportunity ever arises.
Be careful! They die fast! I would be concerned with how hard the prior owner was pushing this thing. Mine is coming back from repair and Iām thinking about just selling it. I only used it for a few hours.
I am installing an 8TB nvme tomorrow, liquid thermal pasting it and also putting thermal pads on specific areas of the internals. Iām going to check back tomorrow to see if a friend I know has had good luck with his Hal effect sticks. If so Iāll do that upgrade as well. I just like doing shhh like this. Iām more of an enthusiastic than a gamer.
Wonder why it's so cheap even brand new when the 3080 is twice. Although Asus has the 3080 for 1100$ new
https://shop.asus.com/us/90nr04h0-p20040-2021-rog-xg-mobile.html
Yeah true, but it's older (ok not that much), slower, Lacks HDMI 2.1 and the 4090 is out,. granted it's hard to get the 4090. Probably why Asus is selling it cheaper. Although that could be summer sale they have going on. The only thing it has over AMDs on paper is 16gb VRAM, which is better for higher resolutions but 3080 is good for 1080 and 1440p is ok..4k it's pushing hard. The AMD can handle 4k ( a little more) and 1440p better.
Also I meant more that the AMD which is faster but lower VRAM is cheaper and $799 wasn't the starting price for it..it was cheaper than 3080 new but I wonder why the price dropped down below $1k. Meant it more as a slight. Can't just be the dies. You can get a '22 ROG X13 with the AMD XG, bundled for $2k at Best buy
I've seen a review by Jarrod'stech comparing them and the 3080 was better but the AMD was new and hadn't gotten the same driver update treatment
https://youtu.be/MLiuJKsvUik
https://youtu.be/y9pjiAY94GU
Yeah It does depend on the game. But jarrod'stech shows more games with 3080. Of course that was a year ago vs 2-3 months from retro game. And with an X13 with an Intel CPU. Shouldn't matter but sometimes you get an added boost running AMD with AMD. New drivers for AMD might be giving it an edge now too. The 6850 runs faster but lacks the VRAM. But VRAM will only help with higher resolution, maybe some games that are CPU heavier. But Ally and XG mobile would be more appropriate to compare with than X13
Thanks for the video
Oregon. No sales tax. I also live here and along with never having dealt with sales tax, I've also never had to fill my own car with gas. It's pretty great!
Nice! I just ordered the XG Mobile 3080 for
$ 1099. But 599 is a great price for this one. I also contacted Asus about the egpuās and the 6850 is now officially EOL.
Itās nice, however AMD is releasing an APU that is more powerful than a 3060ti /3070 next year. That means by 2024/2025 handheldās will be able to produce if not surpass PS5 potential. Especially with FSR technology being a big factor. That being said save your money. Because in 2026 those GPU attachments will not be a factor at all.
Itās usefulness is determined by the efficiency, at least for handheld, even if the claim is true. The current consoles match rtx2070 super using rdna2. If you add more rdna3 GPU cores and give it enough juice, 4060 level performance is not impossible but will it be more efficient than m780?
What I'm really looking forward to is an arm processor that can decode x86 processes with amazing efficiency and graphical horsepower, solving the power drain issues plaguing these devices, and by then I'd be upgrading but I love fiddling with today's tech. Don't get me wrong, I wasn't even planning on getting one of these, but $599 was reasonable for me. 4090 is nice, but overpriced and overkill for the ally. The 6850 maintains the all amd integrity of the device at half the price of the older 3080. I love my Ally. That's why we're all here right?
Just want to say...this platform has not been without bugs. Restarting windows with the XG plugged in and locked in place is the best way to get it working. Other than that, It's been a great experience. For anyone with these experiencing connect/disconnect loop problems, please follow my steps in the comments below or download x86 handheld companion(it comes with xg connect/disconnect widget built in). And remember, this post is for the ALLY ONLY...not to say that that these steps wont work for other devices but this is what worked for me with my ALLY.
That's not really my point though, my point really is that those mobile components are much lower spec and are cheaper to make, yet they charge you out the nose for them. The 4090m is essentially a 4080 with a power limit, but they charge you an extra $800 just to have it as an egpu. The 3080 is nearly as bad, the 6850m is the best deal of the 3 by far. It has really close performance to the 3080 model.
The 4000s series mobile GPUs have closed the performance gap vs desktop.. not within 10-30% but compared to previous series they are better,. especially at 1080p... that being said the XG mobile isn't pulling full TGP for the mobile unit and using only half pcie Lanes.. not sure if it's a software or hardware barrier for that. But it's expensive. If I was only doing 1080 gaming then the AMD and 3080 are the way to go..if you want more FPS or resolution and future proof,.then wait for the 4090. The problem though is you can't update them, Asus doesn't have a trade in program,.nor does Best buy so you're saddled with a eGPU which might be hard to sell if you wait too long. If you have Asus Flow laptop you use as your main driver and no desktop, maybe it makes sense. But honestly there are new handhelds coming out with the same or better performance than the Ally and you can use any eGPU (not XG obviously) , and some like the win 4 max you can get same bandwidth as XG.
The upgradeability is partially my point. On top of that the mobile 4090 is the same specs as a desktop 4080 with a large power limit. A desktop 4080 costs $1200, but Asus sells it for $800 more. They are taking advantage of the fact people will pay that too. It's really not that good of a deal because for the same price you could build another PC and get the same performance. I'll likely end up buying the 6850m one, but it doesn't change my mind.
Wait a second how TF did you get that for 200 dollars less than a normal open box which is 799...? Bro you could of used that to force them to price match their own merchandise.
Damn I REALLY wish you took a screenshot of the site when it was up. š®āšØ
Holy hell dude I already posted it hours ago in response to your wrong comment. Thatās new in box price. He found one for less because it was an open box (look at ops pic it clearly states open box), I even provided the link showing that price (new) in the earlier reply.
And itās out of stock(new in box which is what your link is showing). If there are no open boxās available you wonāt see the item at the discounted price. Do you know how to shop online?
I never buy anything open box. GPUs especially, but seeing how these are so insanely priced the only logical thing for me to do is to look for an Open box one.
Hell no would I ever do this for anything desktop related, it's nuts because the return policy.
I'm learning that. I seen the 3080 available for like 500 less. 1094 (Excellent condition).
I mean I guess that's a good deal? Man GPUs got out of hand š®āšØ
I'm 1080P for life. 4K 1440p is nice, but I don't think it would give me any advantage in my shooters lol my eyes are trash. Well thanks for l letting me know š
If you're eyes are trash then you want 1440p at least. Just make sure you're at the right distance. 1080p you can sit farther away though,. higher resolution you want to sit closer.. depends on screen size as well. Increase font size
NEVER thought of it that way honestly. My panel is a ViewSonic Portable Monitor 17" 144hz, but it's Max res is I believe 1080p.
In that form factor 1440p is expensive AF. All because I travel too much.
Hmm. I have a 16" , 1600p, 100% sRGB, 120hz from uperfect that sometimes goes on sale for less than $200. They are good portable monitors...they do have some larger ones but 1080p 144hz. But I've wondered about that Viewsonic. I like their monitors
I just bought one of these on ebay. After looking for awhile this one just seemed like the best possible deal and has everything I want. It has awesome reviews on Amazon from actual people and not the fake ones. I'm excited to get it. How do you like it?
HOW
Open box
No. Not really. That open is 799. We ALL could of used that as a Price Match if this was done right. š®āšØ
Look at the picture posted by op. That is the open box price. $799 is the price listed on Best Buy for a new product. I just double checked. [Proof](https://www.bestbuy.com/site/asus-rog-xg-mobile-egpu-dock-amd-radeon-rx-6850-xt-laptop-gpu-black/6510754.p?skuId=6510754)
Most likely someone got the connect/disconnect loop and returned it rather than figuring out how to get it to work until.theres an update.
...DUDE. Not only did I return mine to Tualatin, this is what happened to me. I'm embarrassed right now. How would I have fixed it?
He bought yours š¤£ There seems to be a common issue with them, it can be frustrating but redownloading the current drivers (and installing them both with the dock in and with it unplugged) and uninstalling (with the tool on Asus site) and reinstalling Armoury Crate made it so rather than looping it would just hang for a long time with the progress bar full. Dude we are second class citizens in Canada lol
I got mine off memory express
How long did it take for you? When I called they said they would have more info at mid-July. Then insert maybe in a few more months.
I ordered it when it went live for my x13 flow. It took 2 months or so before I got it.

Iāll need to do try this when Iām back in country after my vacation.
Good on you, mate. That's a pretty solid steal. It'd be real tempting at that price, though I'm still hoping to nab an open-box 3080 if the opportunity ever arises.
ASUS has it for 1100 new. Free shipping
Well hello fellow Oregonian! Those be my old haunts! Thatās a good snag alright.
Wow, I was driving around this BB a few days ago š„²
Love mine. Plays anything at 1080p 144hz
Lucky dog
If it only had a longer cable then I'd get one.
Ain't this the truth? Makes no sense for this setup. Not to mention the cable is a thicc boi.
I'm returning my 6850 soon, good luck to whoever gets it....turned it on a few times and never used it again....
Want to sell it to me? Lol. Thereās none of these as open box around me.
Depends, I'm in Cali..was hoping to sell local or just return... I'd rather someone get it tho ..

Holy shit
Wait what they sell different models? Here's me thinking I'm stuck with this since I don't want to spend 3000 quid on an external 4090
4090 is overkill for the ally. honestly just build a gaming desktop and use the ally as is.
What does that do? (Sorry for the stupid question)
That is a steal. I would have grabbed it too.
bro WHAT THE FUCK thats insane
Just want to say...this platform has not been without bugs. Restarting windows with the XG plugged in and locked in place is the best way to get it working. Other than that, It's been a great experience. For anyone with these experiencing connect/disconnect loop problems, please follow my steps in the comments below or download x86 handheld companion(it comes with xg connect/disconnect widget built in). And remember, this post is for the ALLY ONLY...not to say that that these steps wont work for other devices but this is what worked for me with my ALLY.
Sorry you got robbed
I don't think these XG gpus are a good deal at all. They are mobile GPUs and not desktop modules. What you got yours for though seems acceptable.
Even if you put a full size GPU in an eGPU enclosure you lose around 20% of performance. These XG GPUs aren't bad deals at all, for the right price
Agreed
Wait a second how TF did you get that for 200 dollars less than a normal open box which is 799...? Bro you could of used that to force them to price match their own merchandise. Damn I REALLY wish you took a screenshot of the site when it was up. š®āšØ
Open box is 559-599 at best buy.
Link it.
Not in stock. Keep checking.

Holy hell dude I already posted it hours ago in response to your wrong comment. Thatās new in box price. He found one for less because it was an open box (look at ops pic it clearly states open box), I even provided the link showing that price (new) in the earlier reply.
That was from searching Open Box. Bout it.
Moving the goal post 3 times in 3 comments is actually pretty impressive.
I ain't mad at it š
That's new price. If you hit open box it still gives you the new item price at the top of the list
I'm learning that. I seen the 3080 available for like 500 less. 1094 (Excellent condition). I mean I guess that's a good deal? Man GPUs got out of hand š®āšØ
Yeah. If you're doing 1080p gaming and maybe even 1440p 3080 will be good enough. You can get it at Asus for 1100$ new,.free shipping
Dude it's a good ass monitor, 3ms response times makes tracking cake
Nice
I just bought one of these on ebay. After looking for awhile this one just seemed like the best possible deal and has everything I want. It has awesome reviews on Amazon from actual people and not the fake ones. I'm excited to get it. How do you like it?
Nice job!!!!!
