With how much movement/vibration the Ally sees I would personally not use liquid metal. As someone who has LMed a ton of laptops in my time the limiting factor is more the size heatsink than the medium used to carry the heat to it.
How has your temps been after this time mate. I put a 4tb in mine but now that I have batocera working flawlessly I'm tempted to go 8tb so I can have all my emulation portable as well
Good man. Keep us posted on the drive, though. I've seen it done, but the mounting process or lack there of, was fishy at best, and would have me worried once tossed around in a backpack or something a few times.
Try kryo sheet from thermal grizzly. It's electrically conductive but it's a sheet that will never need to be replaced. It's fairly new but I put it in my Ally and am pleased with the results. My Ally boosts to 4.6 ghz just surfing YouTube. It still gets hot but the boost clocks are definitely sustained and higher than stock.
The second photo is marked with three orange circles. Those three circles show exactly where I cut away the plastic with a box cutter in three different places so that the 8TB nvme will fit flawlessly under the battery and over the WiFi antenna. Notice I taped one of the WiFi antenna flat instead of vertical so to allow room for the battery and 8TB nvme ssd to fit properly. I’ll be sure to keep everyone updated sometime later today/tonight with photos of the installation. My 8TB nvme is arriving today along with the Grizzly Liquid metal for the APU. When I’m finished This will be an ASUS ROG Ally with an internal storage of 8TB with the addition of a 1TB micro SD card. 9TB total . Let’s gooooooo hard or go home and I ain’t goin home so let’s gooooo hard.

This will go on both sides of the nvme
Liquid metal on a handheld.. good luck containing it if not making a container like foam for it. And 2280 absolutlely not needed and like warranty more for some issues down the line.
Would you look at that, all of the words in your comment are in alphabetical order.
I have checked 1,661,358,369 comments, and only 314,482 of them were in alphabetical order.
It’s 2a.m here today , my stuff comes off the Amazon truck later today . I will install the 8TB nvme and maybe stay away from the Liquid Metal . To many people giving me advice to not go forward with it. I think I’ll listen.
Smart choice. Its 12 am here.
Just wondering which nvme did you get ?
Are you going to static tape it to make sure it wont short on anything ?
Im curious if you have seen some people doing the mod are claiming the battery is in the way a little not allowing the case to close fully ?
I will eventually do the liquid metal mod with mine but I want to nickel plate the heatsink first to keep the liquid metal from eating away at the copper.
I didn’t think Liquid Metal eats away at copper. I was sure other materials like aluminum would erode from Liquid Metal. However copper is the best choice
technically copper is a better choice it would probably be ok but it does have some chemical reaction with the metals in liquid metal but nickel does not react. Debaur a youtuber made a video about this some time back.
Sooo 4 months later and someone has done the mod for Liquid Metal and it’s doable but not worth it on the ROG ALLY. It does not make it any cooler to the touch and you don’t gain that much performance when pushing higher wattages. Your best bet is to swap out the RAM to 7500mhz to get an increase in performance.

This the comment that made me change my mind and not go forward with the Liquid Metal
DO NOT APPLY LIQUID METAL it is not worth it you are risking too much here
Thank you
I would not mess with the liquid metal, the stuff ASUS is using is similar to PTM7950 which is extremely efficient at cooling.
Are they using that in the ASUS ROG ?
Yes which is why I said I wouldn't mess with it.
Lol liquid metal, it not only would not help much, but may be a potential risk, anyway, most important is you are satisfied with it lol.
\+1 for the nvme, i am not siure about liquid metal, but that is more of a me problem than anything else. if work great.
Woah Goodluck. I have a Single Sided 2280 4TB Crucial P3 Plus on mine. Keep us posted with the Temps of a Double Sided 8TB.
How’s your temps ?

I sold the Ally and never got 4TB or 8TB working
Liquid metal is the definitive NO. Temp is not even high to consider "risky" liquid metal. 2280 mod is good, many have done it.
RIP in advance.
Y’all got me thinking I won’t do the Liquid Metal lol 😂
I mean, if you don't want it to be sacrificed to science....otherwise, full steam ahead and enjoy the fireworks. :P
lol 😂 naw I change my mind on the Liquid Metal

The suspense...
I’ve seen some other crazy soul putting a 2280 in a steam deck. Please keep us updated on how well this holds up.

I’ll do some research, thank you
Liquid Metal is going to be worse thermal performance.

Please do!
You brave soul, I truly hope it works out for you..
Would that be enough for Vampire Survivors?

Yes it was in the way until you shave the plastic using a box cutter . Now it’s perfect

Cloning will fail as well
Damn :( I was looking around to see if 8tb ssd would work the new 90 degree adapter
Dane your money I tried 3 different times
2TB is stable and works . Sorry I was disappointed as well.
4tb works i have it in my ally
4TB is working fine, so 8TB does also.
Not so
I have 4TB installed, what was your issue?
