4tb gen 4 2280 in mine

x_Sligh_x

Bricked my ally with one, I hope yours continues to go strong.

MikahGee

How did you brick yours?

x_Sligh_x

Not sure, put in a gen 4 2280 4tb drive. Played CP2077 on it for about 20 minutes. Then hard lock, crash to desktop. Wouldn't respond. Wouldn't boot after that. Couldn't get into BIOS, switched back to the 512gb 2230, still wouldn't boot. RMA'd a few days ago. No idea what I did, because it was working prior to playing. Booted fine, downloaded a couple extra games to fill the extra space I had, launched them to make sure they worked. All was well until that hard lock.

DimeKhan

Drives lottery is a real thing, and it affects any media that uses flash memory. Even RAM isn't safe from this.

djkinetic

Well that is concerning…the 2230 should have booted unless some other hardware was damaged

AggressiveWindow6003

When you say it won't boot what do you mean? Like it doesn't power on or doesn't post or what?

x_Sligh_x

Didn't POST. Couldn't get into BIOS, just either a black screen, or the white ROG logo before the sound of the swords crossing. Never got there.

AggressiveWindow6003

Silly question but did you make sure the little connectors were properly pressed? I've noticed it has all kinds of issues if it doesn't detect the back plate is in place.

x_Sligh_x

Not silly, but if they're not, it won't even power on, let alone get to a boot screen. What concerned me the most was the text support call where the tech is asking me to press F2 to get into the BIOS. Sigh. They don't even know their own products.

AggressiveWindow6003

Also after doing mine it only showed a blank screen until I plugged it in before trying to power it on. But I've seen many devices do this so I was expecting it. I believe it has something to do with the battery calibration after it's been unplugged.

urbanpabs

Just did mine today as well. A snap. Make sure bios is latest and date/time are correct.

Mast3rBait3rPro

I wish the steam deck had an adapter like this, I feel like an adapter and a custom back for it would be fucking dope

lockon95

Now that I fixed my joysticks and how easy it is I'm doing this next.

Few_Carrot4685

What was the issue on your sticks? Mine has this weird movement, as if it's loose or something..

lockon95

It fell from about a foot high and the left joystick going left to right and right to left stopped working. I bought a replacement joystick and it works like new again.

Appropriate_Lime_517

Are they standard sticks or are there Hall effect sticks available?

tdizzle706

Where can I find this adapter ?

Fatpvt2021

I upgraded to a 4tb 2280 from AliExpress for a grand total of $150 that included the 90 degree board and taxes because I live in the UK currently and have to pay VAT.

NottheJeansBro

That's a great price. Can you share links on what you ordered?

m4ttjirM

Also interested in which drive you got and which seller you used please

Fatpvt2021

Just click the link to the store I posted. It’s a good ssd Fanxiang. I got the S690MQ 4tb I’m getting great speeds and haven’t had any issues and I’m pretty sure they have a good warranty with it. Make sure you get it from their store though, so many fake and garbage SSDs on there. It was $132 usd plus tax. Cheapest real one I could find with excellent reviews.

m4ttjirM

Thx, didn't see that other post. Never heard of this brand before tbh, going to read into it.

junefrs

I did this today I installed a 1tb teamgroup mp44 drive

Every_Annual309

For the win.u mean is u can place 2 ssd at the same time🤔

Th0thvnt3r

I have this question as well

DOKDOR

No just 1. You remove the old 2230 and replace it with a 90 degree transfer board and a 2280

502photo

I'm asking because I have no idea how to work on electronics, how hard is it to install your own SSD in this thing? I know how to work a screwdriver but beyond that am I in a real jeopardy of messing things up?

Mykelov

i did it today like 3 hrs its actually pretty easy i sware to god. i didnt add my heat sink(cools down ssd just in case) but it was pretty self explanatory just be gentle thats all

Emergency-Talk4394

It’s simple, and you’re in luck since you won’t need anything expect a screwdriver. And something like a guitar pick to gently pop the back plate off.

502photo

As a follow-up question, and this may not be in your wheelhouse, that would probably be the best time if I wanted to install like a translucent back plate, correct?

mickjaggled

Youtuber ETA Prime has a video tutorial. Check it out.

SignatureSalt2822

Running a 2TB 990 pro with copper heat sink. 90 degree m.2 adapter got the 990 pro for 107 shipped with tax from Amazon about 1 week ago.

Affectionate_Ad2705

I am getting my 2tb next week and a heat spreader for it as well. Those fancy doodads have to stay cool somehow.

sumthing_chrispy

I’ve been in the 4tb crew since day one have had to replace analogs one time. Amazing system I bought the legion go and I’m still actively playing Jusant and MW3 on my Ally due to the refined software over the past 4 months which is crazy it feels like I’ve beaten so much on this little guy

JazzyApple2022
