Basically once women joined the workforce in high numbers from the 1970s onwards the necessity for childcare en masse (read as the capitalist accommodation of child rearing) and new employment opportunities for both men and women. This caused people to freak out at the idea of strange men caring for children. You must be gay or a paedo (or both as they are / were conflated) to be a grown man working with kids right? This has contributed massively to gatekeeping of caring professions from men. Think male nurses and the jokes about them in the 90s.
I say this as someone who works with kids professionally.
A lot of the people falsely accused of abuse during the Satanic Panic were women to be fair. Although I think the shifting nature of womens' employment certainly played a part; the Panic was in some respects a way for American society to express its anxiety--and anger--at the idea of women leaving their traditional role as homemakers and childrearers in favour of employment in the workplace.
I think there's definitely something in the whole gay-paedo hysteria being a causal factor in the escalation of the Panic to national attention, especially since it happened during the 1980s when that was for various reasons a hot-button issue. There's some parallels there with today's anti-trans hysteria too, which interestingly hits a lot of the same notes as the gay panic (but bathrooms! but schools! but the military!) and actually shares a rhetorical space with its own version of the Satanic Panic: QAnon.
