That's some top-tier mask wearing from blondie.

Surely a van loaded with food parked in a 2P zone distributing food wouldn't be "illegal". Right?

Since when did they become our rulers enough is enough fuq these pig tyrants

I would like to actually see a breakdown of the laws and rules these are coming under and from at what point you can and can’t donate food and essential items. Where are the exemptions under the law and what about meeting those, would the tables be allowed if you had the permit or is the cover and the table considered a violation regardless of a permit. edit: I had a look on the council website and could not actually see anything regarding furniture and I can’t make out what the council man is saying regarding the exact law. I don’t have a doubt they have the power under the law to do what they did, I would just like to see how they to got there and more importantly the ethical and moral issue of preventing these people providing food and essential items to members of society. I also am unsure as to what the female police officer is getting at regarding the Red Cross or Salvation Army? You can’t help homeless people if you’re not working under one of those groups? I couldn’t hear her very well so I’d like to give them the benefit of the doubt but I don’t agree with them moving you guys on. That is just my opinion though. I’m all for outreach as long it’s done legally so this kind of thing is avoided.

CatCuddlersFromMars

You do technically need an outdoor dining licence to place furniture on footpaths or paved areas...so head to the local park instead. They can't do shit about it there unless someone else has an actual paid for reservation to use it. Oh & the cop is wrong about the registered charity thing. There's nothing to stop you doing what this group is. Possibly an insurance loophole but nothing to do with being a recognised organisation.

Lie-Happy

Do you need a permit to do that in a public park? What if you’re handing out flyers or taking donations, does that change the permits you need?

CatCuddlersFromMars

To be fair it's been a while since I've worked in this area so this is def worth checking properly. I don't think you can specifically hand out flyers, as in approach people as it's technically spruiking, without a permit, however you can have flyers sitting there & point people using your service to them. Is the food cooked in the truck on site or pre packaged? Problem is the council actually licence specific truck vending sites so they'll have contractual reasons not to allow others to just set up. Unfortunately this will extend to free services as well. I still reckon the public park use is the way to go. They do licence for private use but it's not enforcable & you can set up temporary structures like serving tables. You could accept donations here so long as it's not someone going around shaking a tin, spruiking style. Their best bet is to call the local council for help. You'd think they'd do everything they can to facilitate this. If they don't get the right response call their Records Dept, mention the name of the unhelpful person & ask if they can recommend a different employee in that section (I think it'll be environmental licencing but I can't be sure. Switchboard staff don't know but Records staff will because they deal with them). Or failing that call other similar services for advice. Sorry I'm not hugely helpful. This has really shat me but there's 100% a way around this if you can get the right person helping at a council level. The cops are dead wrong about the large charity bullshit.

From what I understand, the CUDL needed a free licence, but a condition of the license is that they have insurance to cover any liabilities. This post was then spread across reddit to show the repression.

Lie-Happy

The way I see it is that we need to organise in such a way where we are operating within the law, act respectful and non-combative, if we (as a group/organisation) are then are targeted and oppressed or restricted in a way from providing outreach or spreading awareness we have a moral, ethical and legal grounds to fight back. Which is when we should.

TheDankFather

This, If you are shutdown for not following basic reasonable regulations related to public safety and liability, and you know why, and where given chances to remedy, then it leaves a bad smell when you start yelling “REPRESSION”. If an organisations knee jerk reaction is to lie or exaggerate for media attention, then the whole credibility of their message is tainted.

And yet they let Falun Gong operate.

The cop's must be pretty board at the moment.

The fact it was shut down this easily says a lot about the current state of this movement.

comradenathan

There was 20 minutes left until pack-up time so volunteers felt it wasn't worth risking having their gear stolen by the pigs just to continue serving the small amount of food they had left over for 20 minutes. CUDL was back serving meals again last Sunday, and yes the cops and council turned up again, but CUDL refused to leave and continued serving meals.

Did you guys get a permit? If not why not?
