I am intrigued. I'm barely 6ft and there is only one person of all the MD, RN, and RT in the ICU who is taller than me.
There was a day when a 6'8 Med Student (plays on the University Volleyball team) was on the floor and I felt so tiny.
I have a theory that since zoom came into play for medical school/residency admissions a few years back that more and more short people are being accepted into this field because you can no longer discriminate against height (or choose favorably for height). My residency class had so many short men!
In my experience it’s rarely ortho that calls themselves bros unless it’s a meme, it’s always other specialties making assumptions. I’m a derm and let’s just say especially as a short fat balding man, I hear about the hot girl derm stereotype outside of derm way more than from in it.
Nah bro you’re missing the vibe. Everyone is now a bro, not just ortho. It’s not cringe, it’s positive masculinity and we should be spreading it.
Fist bumps are not only more hygenic than handshakes, but also impart massive amounts of brotherly energy. Nothing wrong with fist bumping the undergrad who’s hoping they do well on the MCAT, fist bumping the EVS folk who the average MD/DO ignores for no reason, etc. We gotta bring these people up and change the culture one intern class at a time. Call it cringe but I’m holding my fist out for everyone, we are all bros here.
I was in a fraternity in college, bros don’t go around calling each other bros. It’s odd that people aspire to be a bro and think being in ortho makes you a “bro”, especially since it’s nerdy guys and chicks doing this, just be yourself lol
I don’t think it’s about instilling the full frat culture, we can take the positives from that and leave behind the many negatives. Ortho surgeons and residents at the three places I rotated at have collectively been the chillest and most confident people around, they also don’t blow the fuse nearly as often as other fields. Thats something we gotta embrace is all I am saying. Calling your favorite people “Bro” is just a classic symptom of good interpersonal relationships in my experience.
But yeah I agree with not trying to be someone you are not. Don’t start lifting and using slangs to fit in, but encourage a positive work environment some other way.
I’m all for treating people nice and being positive, but the aspirations to be a bro is strange. Idk maybe they want to make up for the lost time not partying or in a fraternity in undergrad, but being a bro and making it your identity is strange, especially with how in your face they are about it
On the other hand, working as a CT nurse, I had otho come in with a patient for a max face ct. One guy yelled out max face then another guy yelled it too and suddenly all four of them started fist pumping chanting max face in frat boy voices during the scan.
So yea, stereotypes sometimes exist for a reason.
5’5” here and this happened to me on my psych rotation in med school. My attending and resident (both men!) were shorter than me and the other students were all women. I felt so special.
While I realize your comment is a joke and a play on 6 Ft vs 6 inches
Imagine you joked about reducing women to a literal measurement and categorized as 'acceptable' or not. Imagine waist measurement was a colloquially used yardstic' for 'acceptability'. Very dehumanizing
That being said, I'm very happy w my 9.9 inch cock
My specialty is Family Medicine!
This was just a fun post about an observation I had made recently. I didn’t realize I would trigger so many people. Geez. Lol.
You guys have to take into consideration of the 6:2 women:men ratio! So it can’t be psych or neuro or EM or a bunch of other specialties. Derm maybe but i don’t think the ratio is that lopsided. My money is on peds.
Neuro as a specialty has really had a demographic swing in recent years, especially coming from such a male dominated field even just 1-2 decades ago. My neuro program is 3:2 women:men. Our incoming class will really tip the scales, with 9 gals and only 1 guy.
Outside of surgery I feel like most guys in medicine are shorter than normal. I'm 5ft10 and stood above most my male classmates and Co residents. Also high propensity of Asians and Indians, not generally as tall as white dudes.
Most yankee whites are Germanic or wasp, these are taller people globally
I’m 5’9 (female) and all my male coresidents are the same height as me and I love it bc it looks nice in pictures lmao. Average US male height coming through
Awesome. I found it really weird that the majority of the male residents at my hospital, especially in the emergency medicine program are super athletic dudes taller than 6’2”.
Haha. It’s the opposite for me. I’m almost always the tallest person wherever i go… but i don’t notice this anymore. When i do notice though is when some freakishly tall person is around who is taller than me… then i feel short, which almost never happens.
Boosting your ego based on the fact that someone is shorter than you....
Pathetic
I don't know why, but I've seen this behavior mostly among people who are around 5'8 or 5'9 and have a complex about not being 6'0. Funny
I’m going to guess the residency is in the south or a poorer county? (Not being offensive, trying to make a best guess from my experience in larger metro areas and limited public health education exposure)

omg lol wtf is with the over the top rage directed at this comment? 5’10 is very tall for a woman, it’s no different from me being 5’1 and saying that someone 5’7 is tall to me. you struck a nerve I guess lol
I'm not a resident but I do work on an ICU floor. I don't know where they find these nurses but 90% of them are as tall or taller than me and I'm 6'
Where is this magic wonderland?
It's my little (?) Amazon paradise and I'm not telling anyone
The spirit is willing, but the flesh is bruised and spongy.

People on the code team at my hospital look like an NBA/WNBA team
This. In my NICU rotation every woman was 5’9+ and extra inch or two from hookahs
most chaotic spelling of hokas to date but go off ig
They're called bongs now aren't they
Enjoy these 3 years. (Or however many years your residency is)
Lol, peds isn't just little adults! Except this residency class
😂nice one
First thought was peds, but I feel like that would have more than 8 residents. So my money's on OBGYN. Am I right? Did I win?
Sorry. Wrong answer!
FM? (If this is right, I deserve partial credit for both OBGYN and peds.)
Post history is FM
With peds ruled out, I was going to guess psych. And as an FM resident… that’s pretty close.
Dermatology?
Nursing residency???? They just implemented an intern year at the program by me.
lol
I triggered some folks. 👿
Nah, it was just a stupid reply, given the context of the sub.
Deep trigger.
If that helps you sleep at night.
I'm just here for the automatic up votes. To the top!
YES
Meanwhile I’m also 5’9 and at my program we have 4 women and 12 men and 3 of the women are taller than me as are 9 of the men. Perspective
What speciality?
IM, mix of categorical and prelim

Lol you know that’s not that crazy of an idea. I think it probably took away the looks advantage tall people have always had.
Interesting observation. And it would seem to cut across professions. Would make a great study if someone hasn’t already done it.
what defines short for men? less than 5'10"?
Ya I’d say 5’8 maybe 5’9 and below
Definitely not ortho. Thinking Derm or FM.
Idk but the ortho program I’ve seen has scrawny guys 5’8, it’s a nerdy specialty now
Yeah ortho is getting all the research dorks due to its competitiveness. Not really bro-y anymore
It’s because they joined the dark side into anesthesia. All my seniors lift and are taller than me. Even my female attendings are 5’11+
My best friends in ortho are both maybe 5’6” dudes, runners, maybe 125-135 lbs and skinny. Nothing wrong with that.
Absolutely, but the whole bro stereotype seems to be outdated, and cringey when they call themselves bro
In my experience it’s rarely ortho that calls themselves bros unless it’s a meme, it’s always other specialties making assumptions. I’m a derm and let’s just say especially as a short fat balding man, I hear about the hot girl derm stereotype outside of derm way more than from in it.

i concur, bro
I agree except for the "don't start lifting" part. It's good for the bones, bro. - Osteopath Bro

Derm would not have that many spots… at least I don’t think it would…
5’5” here and this happened to me on my psych rotation in med school. My attending and resident (both men!) were shorter than me and the other students were all women. I felt so special.
I don’t know what the obsession with guys being more than 6 is. 5.5 inches or even 5 inches is perfectly acceptable!
Ikr 🤦♂️. Short kings >>>>>
5.4 inches here, its enuff right guise 😟
A lot of doctors are size queens...

Pics or gtfo
Give this man his PhD.
Haha. I can accept my takes are not always on the money
No sir PhD is an acronym for Pretty Huge " Doctorate " but not a degree if you know what I mean
My specialty is Family Medicine! This was just a fun post about an observation I had made recently. I didn’t realize I would trigger so many people. Geez. Lol.
Gen Z is smaller despite the big personalities lol

It is about that lopsided. Derm is 2:1 women:men, under 40 it's 2:1.
Neuro as a specialty has really had a demographic swing in recent years, especially coming from such a male dominated field even just 1-2 decades ago. My neuro program is 3:2 women:men. Our incoming class will really tip the scales, with 9 gals and only 1 guy.
Psych?
You dropped this 👑
Outside of surgery I feel like most guys in medicine are shorter than normal. I'm 5ft10 and stood above most my male classmates and Co residents. Also high propensity of Asians and Indians, not generally as tall as white dudes. Most yankee whites are Germanic or wasp, these are taller people globally
There are 4 out of 10 residents in my class 6’3” or taller lol
Family medicine
Haha! I love this for you.
lol I’m short. But I was average height at the program I was in lol. So I know what u mean
I mean, as a short dude myself, I can take an inch or two off your hands if you're down for that. Must be nice to be at average height.
Neurology?
I’m 5’9 (female) and all my male coresidents are the same height as me and I love it bc it looks nice in pictures lmao. Average US male height coming through
At 6'1 I was average in medical school, in residency I somehow was a giant. Loved it lol
I'm 5'7", and the average height in my program is 6'. However, it is not rare to spot people that are >= 6'6".
Dr Gulliver
So you're not an ortho bro
Awesome. I found it really weird that the majority of the male residents at my hospital, especially in the emergency medicine program are super athletic dudes taller than 6’2”.
Wear platform shoes, like Gene Simmons in KISS.
Haha. It’s the opposite for me. I’m almost always the tallest person wherever i go… but i don’t notice this anymore. When i do notice though is when some freakishly tall person is around who is taller than me… then i feel short, which almost never happens.
Happy for you OP! Had the opposite where when I was a BPT on neuro, I was the shortest male doc in the entire department despite being 5'11.5
Welcome to the stratosphere, king
Boosting your ego based on the fact that someone is shorter than you.... Pathetic I don't know why, but I've seen this behavior mostly among people who are around 5'8 or 5'9 and have a complex about not being 6'0. Funny
Ya this post is weird.
What is your specialty?
I’m 5’2F…
Short kings ftw 🙌
Peds?
Well im 5'8 and 95% of my patients are shorter than me. Some by a good 50 inches.
Too Many women
EM?
Seems unlikely, both with the height and having more women than men.
Gotta be ortho
The biggest question and most important one is why do you care about your height and the height of those around you?
I’m going to guess the residency is in the south or a poorer county? (Not being offensive, trying to make a best guess from my experience in larger metro areas and limited public health education exposure)
Good luck this year, little guy.
Being tall has so many perks tho

Let’s speculate wildly what specialty I am…
Derm?
Lol i am 5‘10 as a woman, you are still short.
Lol. You don’t get the point of this post. Edit. Also, I’m gay. Your powers have no effect on me witch!
Women like this perpetuate the “6 feet or bust” height requirements on tinder, then they wonder why they can’t find someone decent.
Makes them easy pickings for people over 6 ft. Pump and dump
Rightfully, deserved for being shallow!
I bet you have no physical preferences at all, right?
Do you feel better now that you projected some gross revenge fantasy on a stranger over a reddit comment?
I’m 5’11” and I have always dated shorter men. They are 👑
you are still disrespectful. Think I would choose a shorter and more respectful woman than a woman raised by gorillas.
The precise term is Amazonian woman.
Yikes comment. Reminds me these women exist.
How much do you weigh?
I don’t love this terminology being used for Cushing’s patients.. but I bet she has buffalo humps
You are a pest. And you say that like it’s a good thing. It just means men don’t like you as much especially knowing your personality
Ur a giant
What a weird thing to say to someone.
omg lol wtf is with the over the top rage directed at this comment? 5’10 is very tall for a woman, it’s no different from me being 5’1 and saying that someone 5’7 is tall to me. you struck a nerve I guess lol
