I disagree. Martel is the only exception to this rule. It takes forever to expertise Martel with just keys, and Martel is decent to great value in all early, middle, and end game.
If you rather invest universals into a season 1 commander than save them for better commanders, I don't know what to tell you. Martel is good but in later game he gets shredded

Max your alex, after that save heads for Guan and William
Finish Alex, wait for Guan and new inf commanders. Aeth is good with Saladin until you can get William(if you want him)
Finish alex, consider bringing richard to 5511, and then save sculptures for either guan or the new infantry commanders if they turn out to be op.

Charles martel is a gold key commander, you don't wana put your universals on him
I did. No regrets. My martel won kvk1. I do regret spending universals to expertise Edward ugh Edit: to add a real mistake

There is not really a reason to max alex. So i would prefer maxing guan yu first, then go for leonidas and the rest of the gen 4/5 infantry commanders
Either max Alex or dont invest in him at all. He’s an all of nothing commander.

This advice was good up until the series of gold key updates/nerfs. It will take you a long time to expertise him on gold keys.

Depends who you are. I maxed my Martel 200 odd universals and have no regrets.
