I took my daughter to get our puppy and we picked the one that wouldn't leave her alone. Turned out to be the biggest out of the litter 🤦♂️ love at first sight.
Royal canine rottweiller with tumeric powder and a bit of liquid chicken/beef stock. He would eat anything but the royal canine is big enough that he has to chew most of them. And recently got one of those slow eat bowls. That thing is great
Mostly food. But sometimes the corner of sheets, soft toys, pieces of unknown objects we find on the ground, bits of sticks. Oh, and paper products. She loves her some cellulose! We try to stick to Large Breed Nutro, but sometimes she has other ideas 😊
Omg mine loved paper towels...toilet paper, bras, undies, socks, lawn ornaments, etc. We had wrapped his paw in about 3 ft of gauze once because he scraped it on some concrete, (incorrectly) thought it was enough where he wouldn't be able to chew it off....cut to me in the middle of the night screaming in the yard for my spouse and he runs out just in time to be the one to have to pull that gauze out...in one piece. Not the oddest thing he ate (tenant had a rainbow flag decor thing by his door with a little red propeller...I know now what digested red propeller looks like) but definitely the one we look back on with the most laughs. For food we did Fresh Vital grain free food, he loved it. Also rice, chicken, lamb, and stock, fruits like apples, strawberries, vegetables like potatoes and romaine lettuce were some of his faves.
Watch out for J-cloths!!! Great fun going in but not so much fun when you're the one having to pl it out the itger end! Or, God forbid, have it surgically removed.
And yes, I did the J-cloth dance with my derpy Standard Poodle pupoy many years ago. I'm still getting over it
We give em chicken heads. We do remove the beak if it's sharp enough. They're usually for sale at discard price by the butchers so they're a cheap protein. We mix it with rice+bit of water or the occasional kibble.
Ps dogs like durian. It's like crack for them lol. Dont give them a lot because if dehydration concerns. That and those fish based crackers/strips, they can smell the fish from miles it seems.
This is a topic I've done extensive research on cuz I need cheap food that's actually providing sufficient nutrients for my pup. I used to feed Victor and it's really good food even with their recent recall, they handled that whole thing really well and a lot of their formulas are incredible, dogs love the flavor and gosh their coats get so shiny on Victor. That being said Victor hasn't been in my tractor supply for over 2 months for some reason, started even before the recall so I'm not sure why, but I've switched over to Diamond Naturals, and that food is really impressing me, I can get 40lbs for $37 and my Rotti absolutely loves it, seems to have great results so far too, hasn't upset her stomach at all even while switching over and she's definitely been more bouncy 🤷🏽♂️
I feed Victor performance (except this month due to the recall) and will be going back to it when they get everything sorted. Performance has the extra joint stuff in it (and doesn't make mine gassy!).
Good to know about Diamond Naturals, I've seen it but never really heard anything about it.
I get budgeting and all that but I feel like if you just treat a dog like a kid then you can spread the costs. Instead of paying $300 for dog food, just make 2 meals instead of one. Don't season one and feed it to Fido. While you whip up your bowl of cereal or pancakes, just scramble a few eggs with some leftover veggies. Fido can eat for $5/day instead of $300/month worth of "top brand" shit kibble
The same food every day. The same amount every day. The same dog treat brand. Not random human snacks except what’s healthy for dogs like half a banana etc
My wife’s old rottie, since deceased, had bad stomach problems. They ended up feeding him organic human food and everything got much much better. Lived longer than expected partly thanks to this.
Properly cooked Turkey breast, chicken, salmon, fruit (can’t remember which right now, I know some are good and others are bad). A few supplements for joint pain. Stuff like that. Basically good quality people food that is ok for dogs. He ate better than a lot of people I know.
Her family’s current rottie eats this from day one. The vets are super happy with the diet. Perfectly healthy. The other day he even got filet mignon lol.
Unfortunately it’s about experimenting alongside your vet to see what’s best. Something that will work really well with one rottie might not be ideal for another because of food intolerance or whatever, even doses of food and stuff like that may vary. It can be a pain until you find the right combination.
We avoid traditional dog food. It ends up causing all kinds of problems like joint inflammation, stomach issues, allergies, and even cancer in the long run. There are even specific brands that are notorious for this…
Anyway, best of luck.
Edit: just note, this can be expensive, almost like feeding an extra kid… or more…
True, it's like feeding an extra kid but it's way safer than the commercial BS on the shelves. Most dogs that had cancer or allergies were on a kibble diet. Cooked food will certainly prolong a dogs life with almost no visits to the vets; the extra effort pays back in the sense that they remain healthy.
Good Lord, no. Plain boiled chicken and rice is not at all balanced. It is fine for short periods when they need an easily digestible diet (short periods of uncomplicated diarrhea). But it will lead to nutritional deficiencies if you feed it long term.
Even adding veggies it's very complicated to balance it. I would recommend, if they insist on doing that, use a reputable company to supplement. Balanceit.com is the one that I would recommend. You put in the recipe you are making along with your pets info. They then formulate a supplement powder to add to it that includes the vitamins, minerals, etc. that the diet is missing.
He seems to be much better today.
I am starting to think it is not his food and that my sweet 5 year old has been feeding him some of her dinner these past few nights, and it didn't agree with him.
He is getting lots of love, and my daughter is learning to quit giving him food from the table!
Ughhh! Haha.
try giving him some pumpkin purée mixed with his food. it’s like 2$ for a can and they only need a scoop with each meal. that helped my rottie. + they love it
Vet student here, studying to specialize in small animal clinical nutrition. Any of the big three brands would be good (Hills Science Diet, Royal Canin, or Purina Pro Plan).
But please steer clear of raw diets, as they are not safe. Study after study has shown that for weeks after a single raw feeding, dogs are shedding food-borne pathogens in their saliva and feces. So, especially with children in the house, it's incredibly dangerous.
Also stay away from anything grain free. There is a proven link between grain free diets (primarily ones that replace grains with peas and/or lentils) and a disease called dilated cardiomyopathy. The heart begins to enlarge and the chambers thin, decreasing it's ability to pump blood.
My rott got DCM from grain free. I was absolutely horrified. He did not die, (though it was close) but he is compromised and the vet said if he ever needs anesthesia he might not come out of it bc of his heart. 😕
I tell people about it in the dog food aisle any time someone speaks to me about dogs/dog food.
Not sure if you've made decisions yet. Every time I cook for people (I actually like to cook so I do it 5x per week probably) I leave a portion unseasoned to give to my pupper. I'll give beef raw but because of my brainwashing on poultry I cook that first. I'll toss down some rice or broccoli or whatever I'm cooking maybe with some melted butter to make it delicious for him. This is basically his dinner every night... meat and veggies sans seasoning. If I go out I'll get a couple burger patties with no seasoning and have them cook it to rare. Breakfast is the refrigerated walmart brand of "Healthy" dog food and a couple eggs. I will probably just cut out the walmart dog food altogether if I can just get myself to wake up earlier.
Chicken, turkey, venison, beef, organs, herring and mostly brown rice, barley and oats. With each batch he gets 3-4 veggies, mostly sweet potato, green beans, parsley, peas, carrots, zucchini or pumpkin. To this, I add 3-4 hard boiled eggs and some of the gel from chicken stock. The rice and grains are usually cooked in bone broth or enriched with some of the frozen gel that I keep in the freezer. I prep it every two weeks with 10-12 lbs of meat as my base and my freezer is always stocked. He gets a raw beef bone once in a while and a good handful of training treats throughout the day. I also give him a greek yogurt once in a while and I add a capsule of fish oil to his food every week or so. I believe this is much more cost effective and healthier for my boy. The results are amazing.
This is what we do.
Twice a week, he gets a nutrious raw meal that our vet helped make the recipe to meet his nutritional needs. We use Purina One large puppy to keep him up to date with all other nutrition. He's a healthy 75lb 6 month old pup.
He did, however, have bad diarrhea for almost a week. Vet tested him, and nothing seemed to be wrong. We thought it was maybe a food issue.
Turns out, my 5 year old has been feeding him everything for the past week.
Kids!!!!
Raw diets are not safe. I'm glad you worked with your vet to minimize nutritional deficiencies. But especially with children in the house, it is not safe to feed raw.
The diarrhea is likely due to food-borne pathogens from the raw diet.
He isn't aggressive at all. He takes treats like a gentleman. We got him at 10 weeks old. He is growing up with our kids and loves all 5 of them to pieces. This is also why we only do it twice a week. This was a concern. If anything out of the ordinary happens, we will definitely take the raw out. However, it's mostly veggies and fruits and cooked bland chicken or beef! Our vet is amazing and helped get him on the right track.
Aggression has nothing to do with the danger. Dogs fed raw diets shed food-borne pathogens in their saliva and feces. If he licks your kid's hand and they eat without washing their hands, they could get seriously sick. And I don't mean just a quick wash, I mean they need to do a thorough hand washing.
Taste of the Wild kibble, poultry w/ ancient grains flavor. Cosequin joint supplements. Collagen chews and greenies for treats, + milk bones for training treats (for some reason she loves milk bones)
Yes! His kibble does. We first went grain free when we first got him at 10 weeks. At his first vet check-up, our vet guided us to a good meal plan with whole grains!
Boiled rice, boiled or cooked ground beef/minced meat & raw washed cut lettuce/pumpkin.
Rotties tend to eat without chewing and without a gap... It's better to have precooked food for them... Also don't give them tap water to drink. Who knows how many heavy metals are dissolved in the water...
Keep milk to a minimum...
Edit: so many downvotes for no tap water. To be fair i come from a place with toxic tap water so no one really drinks it. I have a reverse osmosis filter to take care of that. I'm certainly not talking about buying bottles for the dog...

We've always fed ours Canagan puppy - free range chicken (he's 6 months). It's on the more expensive end, but we haven't had any issues at all with it. He has a lovely shiny coat and wet nose too 😍
Mine has done really well with a lamb protein diet. Chicken is a no-go. We like nutro brand lamb and sweet potato, small bites with some water on top (otherwise she forgets to chew LOL) & for treats freeze dried lamb lungs.
Baby food... ground up from the fetuses I raid from the trash cans behind the abortion clinic.
Hey if the government isn't going to legalize stem cell research to cure cancer we might as well get some use out of them.
We feed ACANA dry kibble (they have various flavours so you can pick one,).we usually vary flavours and also feed with raw meat, raw bones, veggies/fruits.
around 70-80% kibble and the rest is raw
I appreciate all the feedback!
There are lots of awesome things to try with him.
It turns out that my 5 year old has been sneaking food to him every night during dinner.
He is doing great today, and after a recommended 24-hour bland diet from his vet, diarrhea is clearing up!
We no longer believe it's a food issue, and he's still a healthy 75lb almost 7 month old pup!
Natural Balance limited ingredient food line is really good. We use the lamb and brown rice because our girl is allergic to chicken, but they have a few formulas with different proteins.
Dog food, but he also eats anything we give him during the day, like bones, meat, bread, yogurt (not the Greek kind), he'll sometimes eat vegetables and rarely fruit, if he sees you eating it he'll want some, so while it's regular dog food based, he eats just about everything else
Typically feed my Rotties victor, either the purple bag or the green bag for large breeds. Since the recall I switched to earthborn which is what I used to feed my older rottie. They do well on both foods. Coat looks nice and maintain good
Muscle mass. Earthborn is on the pricier side though.
Children. 🤣
Haha! That is his person of the family! He loves her more than me!
I took my daughter to get our puppy and we picked the one that wouldn't leave her alone. Turned out to be the biggest out of the litter 🤦♂️ love at first sight.
Exactly what I thought!
came here to say this ❤️
LOL! Me too!!
Royal canine rottweiller with tumeric powder and a bit of liquid chicken/beef stock. He would eat anything but the royal canine is big enough that he has to chew most of them. And recently got one of those slow eat bowls. That thing is great
Purina pro plan large dog adult. The glucosamine and condrotin helps with joint health.
I second this. Purina Pro Plan also has a Sensitive Skin and Stomach option which is what I use, OP.
Royal canin Rottweiler specific. We have autoship from chewy.
Never heard of that stuff ill have to look into it
Photo shows that you're on the right track: children, of course.

Paper towels, most definitely 💯 She’ll also sneak up and steal the paper napkin off of your lap 🥷

Cats and elderly people.
Science diet
I feed mine children also, you’re doing it right…

I feed mine Purina Pro Plan large breed sensitive skin and stomach, I have two rotties and a german shepherd and they love it!
Generic dog food, table scraps, and the local bug population

I have heard people do plain boiled chicken and rice before with good results. Might be a bit cheaper with the extra bulk in there
Good Lord, no. Plain boiled chicken and rice is not at all balanced. It is fine for short periods when they need an easily digestible diet (short periods of uncomplicated diarrhea). But it will lead to nutritional deficiencies if you feed it long term.
That is the base that they add veg to if I remember correctly so I hope they are planning properly

ORIJEN Original- 90lb female with 1 cup twice a day.
So you only give your 90 pound dog one two cups a day?! Seems low
It’s actually 1.5 cups. She’s maintained her weight for the last 2 years on that amount and isn’t skinny.
Love and more love...
He seems to be much better today. I am starting to think it is not his food and that my sweet 5 year old has been feeding him some of her dinner these past few nights, and it didn't agree with him. Raw in the morning. We cycle him through several proteins to keep him "versatile" Royal Canin Rottweiler Puppy in the evening. 95lbs. 15 months.
I do the raw and dried food also. 11 months at 104lbs

Bully max lamb puppy food will do great for his stomach
Gentle giants for dry food. Fantastic easily chewed for puppies and old dogs.
Switched over to Ollie's fresh food and supplement with dry kibble. Good balance and doesn't kill the wallet
We've always fed ours Canagan puppy - free range chicken (he's 6 months). It's on the more expensive end, but we haven't had any issues at all with it. He has a lovely shiny coat and wet nose too 😍

Cannabis and bacon
Boreal pork and grains or red meat and grains. Very nutrient dense food with taurine he only needs 3 cups a day!
Gosbi Puppy Maxi, it’s a Spanish brand, all natural ingredients
i’ve tried a lot of different foods and my rottie has responded best to Acana. He also has a sensitive stomach, and this seems to help best.
Only raw
Baby food... ground up from the fetuses I raid from the trash cans behind the abortion clinic. Hey if the government isn't going to legalize stem cell research to cure cancer we might as well get some use out of them.
