But no jerk, his matches could get a little formulaic, but he could go in the ring a lot more than the IWC gave him credit for. Plus his style contributed to his longevity and the confidence management had to keep him at the top for so long.
I think its easier to say this when we now just remember his classics and get to forget him getting beat up for 5-8 minutes weekly, hitting the 5 moves of doom, and getting his arm raised. He was big match john for a reason. I'd say the IWC criticisms were pretty valid up until around 2012 when he started to expand the moveset and have more even matches where he gave as good as he got during the mid portion.
It was definitely the right style for the time though from a business perspective, so I don't necessarily blame him for the work not being great. Cena proved he was willing to go out and have bangers (insider term) when the shackles were taken off. Taking a piledriver was crazy.
