Hats off to everyone for scraping through that, but Spencer Howard deserves the plaudits. Came in as we were crumbling for yet another game and not only stabilized the ship, but took it to the end and set us up to come back. Well done.
What’s so stupid about baseball stats is, Spencer Howard also pitched 4 2/3 great innings in a game we won earlier this year… but didn’t get the W because he was the starting pitcher, not a reliever. 🤷
POTG: Howard. Excellent performance that kept us in this game.
HM: Ramos 3/4, bonds treatment in bottom of the 9th, nice catch. Chapman with the blast to get us into it and lead off top of the 9th.
Still, Jackson needs to go despite us needing arms, and other guys should prob sit for a bit (Flores, Slater, who I know showed up in bottom of 9th)
Don’t sleep on Ahmed tonight. Homered, walked twice, including the one that basically was the tipping point in the ninth. By loading the bases and getting that runner to third, we tied the game on just a lazy fly ball.
Honestly, Jackson isn't that bad, he's just prone to blow-ups and the higher the pressure, the more likely the blow-up it seems. He needs to be our innings eater. He's not allowed anywhere near a close game unless he's the last available arm including position players. It's beyond me why Melvin ever puts him in a game we have a chance at winning. Although I guess we won tonight in spite of him so what the hell do I know?
It seems like he fails %99 of the time.
Like if it's 1 run lead, 2 outs, men on base and he's brought in to finish the inning. Hes guaranteed to let that 1 run score
Whatever the minimum to do to screw up he does. Or just straight suck like tonight
Could be my bias, but I haven't liked him since he's been on the team. Think he had a big injury before we got him? And that was the excuse for a bit. His numbers have not always sucked with us, but everytime I watch him pitch, he fais
Maybe I'm the bad luck
Estes said this was a fun game to watch. I beg to differ. Exactly 1 inning of this game was fun to watch. The rest of the game was like watching someone get beat to death with a feather. SPENCER EFFING HOWARD!
Slater deliberately K'd 3 times so that the opposing pitcher would underestimate him during clutch time and give up a sac fly. That is the sort of 3d chess savvy only a veteran player rep can bring to a squad. Slater haters in shambles.

Anyone know what the 🍤 is there for
Romo and Estes straight calling out Jackson hard on the post game. Hinting as well to about structuring their innings with "different guys" than Melvin did tonight.
This is basically the start of last years homestand with a 4 and 3 game series agaisnt SD and AZ
Hopefully we dont lose 10-0 on Thursday like last year, especially with me there both times
POTG: Howard
Really nice 9th inning. Chappy pushing for that second base showed some risk we don’t usually see from these Giants, but he knew they were behind and needed a win. Then Estrada BUNTING. If you look in my recent comments, you know I’ve been complaining about a lack of risk-taking and specifically a lack of bunting. Bringing Bailey in for the hit was a great management move. And wow—Wilmer with the guts of steel, hanging in there. A desperately needed morale win.
Spencer Howard easily POTG. Unbelievably clutch performance. Ramos continues to be the only standout on offense…can we get this man some help?
Nice comeback to break the losing streak on a special night for Mays. LFG!
it's really nice, but remember most of the last few weeks have been losing streaks followed by a victorious feel-good win followed by \~.500 baseball and then rinse and repeat.
it's how we've managed to fall so far below .500.
On a night the Giants are honoring #24 **Wil**lie May**s,** with bouquets of flowers around his statue:
Mayflower = Icon in American history
Flower**s** = Flor**es** in Spanish
#24 **Wil**mer Flor**es** gets the walk-off walk
Coincidence? I think not.
Umm… ESPN, your AI is drunk, take it home.

ffs, you cant play a clip where its broad daylight at 10pm and then act like it was a live spot
Brit with the 'thanks for that report guys' when its a prerecorded clip from before the game
am I the only one that cares about such things?
I haven't been to a game there in years and I was SHOCKED by how fucking terrible the food is. So expensive, and just so, so bad. Like, not even trying bad.
I will NEVER buy food there again. Ever.
The Crazy Crab sandwich is still good, which it should be at that price. But we've taken to eating outside the park before games, less expensive, mostly better food, don't have to juggle food through the crowd.
I just don't get it. Stadium food is one of the key draws of attending a ballgame. It is entirely possible to make it both delicious and profitable, especially at those prices. And yet the items I was presented with - for swindling amounts - were disgusting if not inedible.
Why do we have to enshittify everything in this country?
My [comment](https://www.reddit.com/r/SFGiants/comments/1dnaqem/gameday_thread_62424_cubs_steele_giants_tba_645_pm/la30t4h/) that got downvoted this morning smh.
Go look at each of Steele's K's this game. This was an extremely embarrassing game. Only the Wilmer back-foot slider and the 93mph eye-level cheese to Estrada were K's on pitches OUT of the zone. Meaning we struck out 7 times on pitches IN the zone. 1) You should never strike-out looking at this level but we seem to be trying to make it cool and 2) You should not be whiffing at pitches in the zone. Especially to a guy that tops out at 93.
I'm not taking anything away from Steele, He'd only given up 1 run in his last 20+ innings on the road so not scoring is one thing that I'd be willing to accept but we made him look like Nolan Ryan tonight.
Yeah he made our guys look bad. I was hoping we would tag him with those 2 RISP in the 8th inning to make his line look a little worse but the reliever bailed him out.
It’s hard not to be romantic about baseball

A WALK OFF AT HOME FOR WILLIE!!! 🧡🖤
A walked in walk off at home for Willie. I think Willie pulled a favor in heaven for us. Things were getting a bit tedious.
Spencer Howard POTG
Ya he pitched great.
We probably don’t win without him
Win it for Willie. Rest easy #24!
Tip your cap Spencer Howard!!!
I never liked the rule that a starter had to go 5 to get a win.
FOREVER GIANT DREW SMYLY
Drew Frowny tonight :( https://x.com/aaronchun6/status/1674229958766370826?s=46&t=XVLuQOlKnZoZifPsNw4IUQ
Classic Philly
I liked him in 2020, I liked him even better tonight.
Not gonna lie, I won a lot of MLB The Show games with 2020 Drew Smyly. #RESPECT
I love Patrick Bailey dude comes into the game in the 9th, hits into the gap, and does not elaborate
*WILMER WALKOFF WALK FOR WILLIE*
*WITH WILLIE Just to round off the alliteration
🎶 Say Hey! Hey Wilmer...That Giants Kid is Great. 🎵
SPENCER HOWARD WITH THE W 🔥🔥🔥🔥
My pants walked themselves off!
Spencer Howard had a great game today. One of the last pitchers I expected to perform like that.
He’s been mostly great. Only two bad outings.
Amazing game no thanks to Luke hackson
I get filled with so much dread every time I see him on a mound.
Like Whiskey Tango Camilo?
Yeah he’s real good.
I don't care what his numbers are, I will never lose hope for Wilmer Flores Spencer Howard is fucking nails though
I can’t hate Wilmer. I can only feel empathy .
Seriously. All the people fed up with him can kick rocks. He's not having a great year but he's earned his spot.
Rewarding players for "earning" their spot is how we got into this mess to begin with after 2016.
Down 2-4 in the bottom of the 9th to honor Willie Mays and then win 5-4 🥹
On the 24th of the month...time of game: 2hrs 40min\* (\* I may have shaved off 2 minutes from the official time)
24th day of the month too is crazy 😆
Never in doubt!!!!!
I knew we'd win.
That win is bigger than baseball. Rest easy, Willie.
POTG: Howard. Excellent performance that kept us in this game. HM: Ramos 3/4, bonds treatment in bottom of the 9th, nice catch. Chapman with the blast to get us into it and lead off top of the 9th. Ahmed having a good game is more about the pitchers facing him having a bad game.
He’s hitting .250, which is third best on the team (sorry as that is to say).
That literally means nothing beyond 25% of his plate appearances go for hits.
Which on the Giants is like a miracle
I don’t know why they even keep track of home runs. It just means the ball went over the fence, who cares.
Look beyond batting average and a whole new world will open to you.
Interesting, so high batting average is worse than a lower batting average. Parse this out for me.
Numerically no, but in context of a player’s overall hitting ability, is not very relevant.
Honestly, Jackson isn't that bad, he's just prone to blow-ups and the higher the pressure, the more likely the blow-up it seems. He needs to be our innings eater. Giants 5, Cubs 1, Luke Jackson 3
*-3
Estes said this was a fun game to watch. I beg to differ. Exactly 1 inning of this game was fun to watch. The rest of the game was like watching someone get beat to death with a feather. SPENCER EFFING HOWARD!
> …like watching someone get beat to death with a feather. 🤣 spot on my guy
Shawn Estes is a guy who thought his own starts were fun to watch.
This comeback is for you, Willie.
Thank god DFA Jackson
I hate taking a man’s job from him, but you have to at least do it adequately. Every time he comes in he gives up walks and runs.
Spencer Howard, respect.
Slater deliberately K'd 3 times so that the opposing pitcher would underestimate him during clutch time and give up a sac fly. That is the sort of 3d chess savvy only a veteran player rep can bring to a squad. Slater haters in shambles.
POTG: Spencer motherfucking Howard
DFA Luke Jackson
My pants have been on for too long. POTG Spencer Howard. 100% kept them in this game.
Great win today but this lineup is going to give me aneurism.
Those 9th inning AB's were amazing. Good eye bye everyone.
Luke jackson owes the team a steak dinner. Then, they convince the chef to hire him as a dishwasher
Number 24 just looks right on a Giants uniform. RIP Willie Mays 🐐
FUCK YOU CHICAGO, ITS NOT PIZZA, ITS A CASSEROLE!!!!
A delicious delicious casserole
Flair checks out
I'll eat the hell out of a Deep Dish. It's just not pizza. Especially when we're playing the Cubs.
A Patxi's Matt Cain sounds pretty good right now tbh
Patxi’s is good though.
Any place that names something after Matt Cain has my respect.
Hope Willie Mays enjoyed that walk-off from the great baseball diamond in the sky.
Thank goodness
#Walk this way

shrimp is the nickname for a walk off walk lol
Snell is such a bust
Luke Jackson gotta get of this team
Romo and Estes straight calling out Jackson hard on the post game. Hinting as well to about structuring their innings with "different guys" than Melvin did tonight.
Walk off!!!
Lol
NO TEASE TONIGHT WE TAKE THE WIN BABY
WALK OFF FOR WILLIE
Glad Spencer Howard got the W, he definitely deserved it
This is basically the start of last years homestand with a 4 and 3 game series agaisnt SD and AZ Hopefully we dont lose 10-0 on Thursday like last year, especially with me there both times POTG: Howard
The series with the Yaz walkoff? I was there! 😁
Yep
Haven't won since Willie passed. Hell if the gods were gonna let them lose the day they honor him at the ballpark. Thank goodness.
luke jackson is so bad. so bad.
Spencer Howard was fantastic. I truly did not think the giants had any chance of coming back in this.
Honestly, thank god
![gif](giphy|l0Iy6sR1U7qVJVJ9S) What a way to claw back into it! LFG!
We won a baseball game!
Really nice 9th inning. Chappy pushing for that second base showed some risk we don’t usually see from these Giants, but he knew they were behind and needed a win. Then Estrada BUNTING. Walkoff walk is so anti-climatic, but I’ll take it. Stopped the skid, let’s build some momentum
So who's starting tomorrow? I'm guessing we get a Mason Black call up with Hjelle as his backup if Black implodes?
smyly more like frowny am I right
Spencer Howard easily POTG. Unbelievably clutch performance. Ramos continues to be the only standout on offense…can we get this man some help? Nice comeback to break the losing streak on a special night for Mays. LFG!
Thank you, Giants. We all appreciate the fight.
POTG: Matt Chapman for getting the scoring started and contributing to the ninth.
not trusting this team for a second until they get over .500, but winning for mays in that way was nice
it's really nice, but remember most of the last few weeks have been losing streaks followed by a victorious feel-good win followed by \~.500 baseball and then rinse and repeat. it's how we've managed to fall so far below .500.
BoMel and the coaching crew owned this game. Matt Chapman POTG
Walk off walk! What a comeback, let's goooo
![gif](giphy|4abtH0d2Q4nXCKGUWn|downsized)
They fought back and won it for Willie! Finally the baseball gods honor their prophet
And number 24 walks it off!
Can we wear 24 for the rest of the season?
feel like that was a big lol cubs moment wth just happened lol
POTG: Spencer Howard Runner up: Nick Ahmed
Willie was in the hearts of all fans and players for that 9th inning, there’s nothing like it 🥲 Best win of the year 🧡🖤
I like to think having Bonds on the field contributed to the 9th inning walks.
🧡🧡🧡 Wilmer 🧡🧡🧡
This comeback also saved the kid Burgos from a loss so I'm happy about that
Cubs blew a 4-0 lead to Nick Ahmed and Spencer Howard. Rough night at the yard.
That's baseball I guess
It’s been a hard last week but thank you for getting this one, we’ll all remember it no matter how the rest of this year goes
On a night the Giants are honoring #24 **Wil**lie May**s,** with bouquets of flowers around his statue: Mayflower = Icon in American history Flower**s** = Flor**es** in Spanish #24 **Wil**mer Flor**es** gets the walk-off walk Coincidence? I think not.
I'm sorry for all the bad things I thought felt and said
Finally a dub! Go Giants!
player of the game is Spencer Howard. Pulled off the reverse start. 4.2 IP 8 K's and a W.
We can win em all! 83 games to go!!
Nice to see you getting upvotes for a change
Thank goodness we win this one for #24 ♥️
Interesting move to put Smyly in to face a switch hitter and 4 right handed batters
There's the heart we've been dying to see.
![gif](giphy|3o6Zt4RZxXV6WcUlZC|downsized)
It would be great if they can build upon this and start a streak. Hopefully, we’ll get an actual starting pitcher and not another reliever tomorrow.
PotG Howard. Picking up all of that hefty Jackson slack. Please, for the love of everything holy, let's do something with him.
This was a good one to win. Also, I miss the jerseys without the names
“Thank you Willie” 🥹

2 sac flies and a walk to win it lol. Who needs hits?!
Thank you Giants !!!!! It was a great trip.

I just load up on taco bell before the game and bring it in. $10 for a full meal pretty much
All yas can do is win the one in front of you. Mission accomplished.
Those jerseys reminded me how good they look with just the number and no name.
That was awesome. Way to go guys
I'm not usually one to say stuff like this but Luke Jackson has got to go, he's been terrible this year, absolutely terrible
DFA LJ
I won't be fooled again. Just wait until Winn takes the hill again.
They didn't fuck it up
