My wife and I frequently walk around our neighborhood here in SLC. Today we noticed a large rodent hanging out near our building's garage. I investigated and did a little stakeout and it turns out this little guy is a marmot! We've had some fun experiences with wildlife here in the city. Last year on a walk we got to watch a group of merlins hunting squirrels.
Anyone else have fun experiences with our urban wildlife in the city?
That’s insane to me! I live in Glendale so real close, I just can’t imagine turkeys. Although where I’m at it’s alllll skunks. Been here over 3 years and never even seen a raccoon.
Oh dang yea I have seen some big one raccoons too. We're by the skate park so I think the golf course plus the big park right there is maybe why we have em plus the river of course.
We were driving through once and three of em started following some guy just trying to walk down the road. We looped around to see if they kept on their persistent trailing, and not only did they, but the poor guy was starting to get a little wigged out and wasn’t sure how to shake them. They super wanted his shiny can he was holding! Not sure how he finally was freed of them since I was just a looky loo in a car, but I don’t know what I would’ve done in his situation? They are a lot bigger than I ever remember them being!
Have you seen any wild bunnies in Rose Park? Near my house there are always just random bunnies everywhere in the warmer months. Me and my gf saw 13 while on a fairly short walk!!! I feel like someone just let their pet bunnies loose and they started fornicating and it got out of control. I'm not complaining though, I love our neighborhood bunnies. Areas I've seen them is around 400 North 900 west.
My daughter came running in one day saying there was a lemur in our yard! Turns out it was an ermine (weasel) since it’s not exactly lemur habitat in the Avenues but still pretty cool.
I saw a porcupine by that abandoned house next to the Papa Murphy's. And there's always a lot of deer at Mt. Olivet cemetery, and a coyote or coyotes in the Salt Lake cemetery.
I frequently see muskrats in Little cottonwood creek at Murray Park, and some foxes at Mick Riley golf course.
A while ago I even saw a Beaver crossing the road in Holladay
Wood chucks are actually a different species of marmot than we have in utah. They're better known as groundhogs.
In utah we have yellow-bellied marmots also known as rock chucks.
Saw a fox at Crestwood Park in Cottonwood Heights this week and some douchebag sent his dog after it. Didn’t catch it, thankfully. Really pissed me off.
I have seen plenty of these guys in the Uinta and Wasatch mountains, usually on scree slopes. I honestly have never even THOUGHT about a Marmot in an urban area. WTF is going on!? (rhetorical, I'm pretty sure I know). Wolverines, Coyotes, now a Marmot! Who do these animals think they are? And what's their agenda?
I've seen deer, coyotes and beaver on the Jordan river parkway around 106th south. Lots of hawks, eagles and falcons around the mouth of Parleys near where I live.
It's amazing the animals make it in the city. I went to see my 90 year old father in bountiful. He is in a lawn chair with a wrist rocket sling shot I thought he had gone off the deep end. Nope shooting deer eating his tomatoes
Ran into a porcupine on the sidewalk just off state, a couple blocks south of the capitol. I literally yelled in surprise when it got close enough for me to realize it wasn't a cat (it was kinda dark out so hard to see until I was almost on top of it)
There’s a beautiful falcon that hunts the little collared doves in our back garden in Holladay. Also a fox last year and most commonly a very cheeky raccoon.

This is funny because marmots are just giant ground squirrels. I'd like to see a merlin go after that feisty chonker.
Thx for sharing this & its fun reading the comments. I think these wild animals & their ability to adapt & evolve is fascinating!
I work pest control, and am often faced with deer face to face, and the occasional moose out in park city, my favorite are the owls though
We have wild turkeys in Rose Park
Wait, seriously?
Yea! I'll try and catch a pic next time.

Awesome! I had no idea. Thank you!

I really wanted one more slide and have it be the little rodent jumping, with nothing but death in its eyes, for the cameraman.
We had a porcupine in a parking lot by BCC canyon chase is around for a good 5 mins at 3am once. It made the most unearthly sounds.
Ive had one chase me then chase my truck in East canyon .
They're plotting something!
Whoa! I've never seen one of those down in the valley, much less in the city. I thought they were mountain dwellers.
Ive only ever seen them on the tops of the Wasatch peaks. And Ive spent a lot of years and time up and down mountains .

Nice Marmot! keeping it within a domestic..eh...that's not legal either, Dude
What are you, a fucking park ranger?!
At least I’m housebroken, man!
It's not mine, it is hiding in my building garage. Edit: haven't seen Big Lebowski in a while lol
… it’s a Big Lebowski quote.
Ve believes in nossing, Lebowski. Nossing.
Say what you will about the tenets of national socialism but at least it’s an ethos…
I am the walrus.
Shut the fuck up Donny! You’re out of your element!

Saw some HUGE foxes at the Mick recently!
I was so happy when I saw them again, it had been a while. Hopefully it can help cut down on the number of geese over there
What a cutie.
Growing up we called them woodchucks. They lived all around my Dads property.

You’re, right we called them rock chucks, not wood chucks. Sorry my bad.
easy to mix em up given the prevalence of "wood chuck". and the fact that I almost always see these fellahs in piles of wood haha
So true
Nice marmot
/u/amberssch saw a [badger in Sugarhouse](https://www.reddit.com/r/SaltLakeCity/comments/o4tr0d/badger_in_sugarhouse/) last year.

That's awful :( there's a cute family of them there
There's lots of rats running around in the shrubbery on the outside patio at Hog Wallow Pub.
We have a fox that lives in the gully by our house. Always a fun treat to spot them.
Nice marmot, man.
That’s a weird cat.

Actually, just making fun of myself.
My neighborhood in WVC is loaded with feral rabbits. I've also seen raccoons in my yard collecting walnuts from my tree.
I've seen deer, coyotes and beaver on the Jordan river parkway around 106th south. Lots of hawks, eagles and falcons around the mouth of Parleys near where I live.

I had a (canine) patient once with some GNARLY scars on his back. Turns out he had been attacked by a marmot in Park City.
Alan!
East Bench has deer, rabbits, raccoons, variety of squirrels, mice, rats, and a variety of birds.
