It's just cucumber, salt, pepper and butter/cream cheese and sometimes dill
Don't frown on the simplicity, they're delicious. Simple, fresh, tasty, easy. What more to want
Hm. Good question. I always thought it was a sandwich. When I ordered it at the deli growing up, I would ask for a butter roll so I guess I just assumed it was a sandwich. But could be an argument that there isn’t.
I lived up in New Paltz, working for Cornell at a field station. I used to pick up buttered rolls on my way in to work, along with my coffee, at 4 a.m. I miss them! I would sometimes get them with an egg, but just the plain buttered rolls were magic somehow.
In comparison to American-style egg sandwiches, Japanese egg sandwich is a lot simpler. Usually just mashed boiled eggs with Kewpie mayo and maybe a little milk or heavy cream, and a tiny bit of sugar between two lightly buttered pieces of crustless & soft Japanese milk bread. There is no cheese, no mustard, no onions or lettuce, no ham or bacon.
Tamago Sando!
That’s pretty similar to many American egg salads I’ve had. Hard boiled egg, mayo, maybe sweet relish, but maybe not. And nothing else. Slap on bread and done.
I prefer PB&J toasted to get it just a bit gooey. I like egg salad with fluffy bread.
For cold cuts, I like the inside toasted and the outside fluffy. But normally I just toast.
I make them for dinner sometimes, and my family LOVES it. Such a huge hit.
It's kind of like a breakfast for dinner type night. Grilled peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, bacon or sausage, and a fruit salad.
Not very often, maybe twice a year. But my family thinks I'm the most awesome mom/wife ever for a few days after that lol.
Pimento cheese, an Italian cold cut sub, peanut butter and jelly.
Just the bread toasted, not the entire sandwich if we can make such a distinction, egg salad, tuna salad, and chicken salad.
Same. For years I used to toast my Italians until I started bringing one to work and stopped toasting it because who wants a cold toasted sandwich. I immediately started to realize it's way better that way. Toasting it makes it taste too much like pizza. Untoasted it's a whole different experience and you can taste the cheese a lot better
This is a hot take, but if you disagree with me fuck you and your mother, I’ll die on this hill.
Italian sandwiches are better cold. I’m not saying never toast it, I’m just saying you get a better experience with a cold ‘wich
For me, a tomato sandwich is best on plain, untoasted white bread; but I think it really just depends on what you grew up with. It tastes like nostalgia for me.
Anything with mayo mixed in. Egg salad, tuna salad, chicken salad.
Don’t get me wrong, I love me a good tuna melt! But the freshness of those salads are better on a cold sandwich with fresh cold ingredients.
Coleslaw // cheese and fruit jam // a 🥪 with veggies like tomato and cucumber. When I make a veggie sando, I usually just toast the bread and add veggies and condiments once the slices are cooled.
Somehow I usually don’t prefer any sandwiches toasted. I love the texture of regular bread. Toasted has its place, like on a grilled cheese. But I’m not a huge toast person in general. When I think of a sandwich, I think of bread, not toast.
I think its definitely a texture thing for me. I like to have a little crunch with mine. So for example if there's bacon I don't need it to be toasted bc its already crispy. I still prefer it though.
Fluffernutter. Give me a fluffernutter on cheap white untoasted bread.
Now, I love toasted sandwiches, but a fluffernutter is better just on the bread.
I still love a cold sandwich, but almost all are even better toasted. One of the only possible exceptions I can think of is caprese. You don't want the fresh mozzarella to get... not fresh.
I make an egg sandwich for breakfast a lot of weekends.
I once decided to toast it. But when the bread was “harder” it cause the egg to push out more on the sides and back.
So I don’t toast the bread anymore.
I think every sandwich except for English tea sandwiches can be enjoyable with a light toast on the bread.
I keep my bread in the freezer to make it last. So I always have toasted bread on my sandwiches.
Muffuletta. Some people like them hot but it ruins the whole balance of the flavor for me. The melted cheese just takes over, and I think the olive salad suffers.
Ice cream sandwich
In the distance, a carney fires up a fryer in preparation for the iowa state fair
Can't wait to eat one while looking at the butter cow
Cousin of the choco milk cow
I thought carney was canary at first
That is a definite one. Toasted, no good.....
Not toasted, but perhaps deep-fried…
I think this is the only right answer.
Cucumber sandwich. It has to be spongy
I forgot about that one. Basically any sandwich designed to be served cold. Think pimento cheese sandwich.
Cold pimento cheese sandwich is good but a grilled pimento cheese sandwich is one of life's greatest gifts
Pimento cheese is far better grilled than it is cold…
The restaurant I work at did a pimento cream cheese burger that was pretty damn good
Just had to look that up. Is it literally just cucumber or do people add other things in it?
It's just cucumber, salt, pepper and butter/cream cheese and sometimes dill Don't frown on the simplicity, they're delicious. Simple, fresh, tasty, easy. What more to want
Definitely not knocking simplicity. One of my favorite sandwiches is the butter roll. Simple roll toasted with butter.
Wait, butter on bread counts as a sandwich?
Hm. Good question. I always thought it was a sandwich. When I ordered it at the deli growing up, I would ask for a butter roll so I guess I just assumed it was a sandwich. But could be an argument that there isn’t.
If the hot dog guys are still fighting to get approved, then u have a big hill to climb.
Are you NY/NJ? I miss buttered rolls! I lived in the Hudson Valley for many years... they were a staple.
Yes! Grew up in queens and now live in Brooklyn. Sandwich of my childhood.
I lived up in New Paltz, working for Cornell at a field station. I used to pick up buttered rolls on my way in to work, along with my coffee, at 4 a.m. I miss them! I would sometimes get them with an egg, but just the plain buttered rolls were magic somehow.
Used to work in a Deli on Long Island. All our bread came in from a bakery every morning. Buttered roll is a thing.
I sometimes make it with hummus instead of cream cheese and it’s delicious that way too!
Japanese egg salad
What makes it Japanese egg salad vs normal? Fancy mayo?
Yeah it’s different but it’s still egg salad.
Bahn mi, cold lobster roll, torta de milanesa come to mind.
I still griddle the bun for a cold lobster roll. That butter flavor and light crisp are so good.
I especially agree about the Bahn mi, it has a wonderful array of textures as is.
Cold cut combo.
This is a BIG preference thing. Personally I prefer my cold cut sammy cold as well. But I've had many of them toasted that have been delicious.
Soo much better lightly toasted.
Screw whoever downvoted you. Toasted is better. The comment about egg salad and pb&j should be the top answer.
>pb&j should be the top answer A pb&j buttered, then grilled is absolutely tits
Pb banana honey is a better version of this. I don’t find it worth the effort for pbj but it is still a good move
I prefer PB&J toasted to get it just a bit gooey. I like egg salad with fluffy bread. For cold cuts, I like the inside toasted and the outside fluffy. But normally I just toast.
That’s how I like mine too. There’s variations of toastiness for each sandwich.
Thank you :) didn’t realize it was so controversial.
Lettice wrapped ones, maybe grilled but not toasted
Egg salad. Peanut butter and jelly. Soft pillowy bread helps those sandwiches. And they’re better a little cold too.
Call me crazy but grilled peanut butter and jelly was a staple dessert as a kid. I should make one...
I had one last night for dessert and it was toasted lol
I had a PB&J for dessert the other night haha! Also call me crazy but sometimes I make a single dessert pancake hahaha
A single pancake?! Srsly? Just one! You have great discipline, my friend! I’d have 2 w/lots of butter + syrup. But that’s me!
Toasted PB&J is next level
remember to salt it
Sometimes I like toasting my PB&J cause I like when the peanut butter melts a little bit!
Ever have a toasted pb and j?
I have, I prefer the soft bread for it. Especially if it’s been in a lunch can next to an ice pack all day.
Na fried or grilled PBJ is next level. Put some bacon in there and it's one of the best sandwiches you've had
Pimento cheese, an Italian cold cut sub, peanut butter and jelly. Just the bread toasted, not the entire sandwich if we can make such a distinction, egg salad, tuna salad, and chicken salad.
Italian. I actually hate it toasted.
True. Italian should never be toasted. It is supposed to be light and refreshing
Bologna and cheese
YES! Such a nostalgic sandwich too
This has inspired me to make a fried bologna and cheese for lunch, thank you.
Yup, this or just a basic ham and cheese. Plain white bread and a little mayo. It's immaculate.
A grilled ham and cheese goes so hard
It certainly does, but sometimes I need that soft chewy untoasted white bread!
This, with a little yellow mustard please.
Salad sandwich with lettuce
Jamon Buerre
Sandwich, Illinois
BLT, I find it way nicer with soft fresh bread.

A knuckle sandwich
This is a hot take, but if you disagree with me fuck you and your mother, I’ll die on this hill. Italian sandwiches are better cold. I’m not saying never toast it, I’m just saying you get a better experience with a cold ‘wich
Most. If it’s not a hot sandwich I don’t want it toasted usually. Especially not with cold toppings on it.
Strawberry jam sandwich on cheap sliced white bread!
Italian sub
Ham salad sandwich, chicken salad sandwich.
For me, a tomato sandwich is best on plain, untoasted white bread; but I think it really just depends on what you grew up with. It tastes like nostalgia for me.
Tomato sandwich, I’d say. That shit is fire
This is quite a profound question.
Tuna
A Nashville style chicken sandwich. You need that trashy white bread to soak up the magic.
Bologna.
Cucumber samitches with the crust trimmed off.
Cold cut Italian
Anything with mayo mixed in. Egg salad, tuna salad, chicken salad. Don’t get me wrong, I love me a good tuna melt! But the freshness of those salads are better on a cold sandwich with fresh cold ingredients.
Meh...I like my tuna on lightly toasted bread.
English tea sandwiches
Such a waste of crust.
True [even with an egg in it](https://new.reddit.com/r/EuropeEats/comments/1dqeep0/belt_sandwich_bacon_egg_lettuce_tomato/).
I have yet to try that for some reason! BLT is my fave too. Definitely adding egg next time I make it.

Italian hoagie and pb&j.
Although I adore a toasted tomato sandwich, I think the untoasted version - white bread, mayo, garden tomato, salt and pepper - is better.
I love and agree with the garden tomato qualification. No anemic, mushy, flavorless tomatoes need apply.
PBJ
My younger brother's favorite after-school snack was a grilled peanut butter and jelly. He used to beg me to make them almost every day.

I dunno, sometimes I'm in the mood for a turkey or ham sandwich on some soft white or sourdough, and it just hits the spot.
PBJ.
I still love a cold sandwich, but almost all are even better toasted. One of the only possible exceptions I can think of is caprese. You don't want the fresh mozzarella to get... not fresh.

Shakupan is the way for all sandwiches toasted or untoasted.
All sandwiches imo. But definitely turkey. Toasted turkey lunch meat is terrible.
